Brighton keen on Tottenham’s Rodon

An update has emerged on Tottenham centre-back Joe Rodon, regarding Brighton’s interest in his services…

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, Brighton have identified Tottenham centre-back Joe Rodon as a potential replacement for Ben White this summer. Graham Potter will need to bring in a defender if one of his current stars walks out of the AMEX and it seems as though he would like to reunite with his former Swansea colleague Rodon.

The report claims that the Seagulls are ready to pursue a permanent deal for the Welsh international. However, they would also be open to signing him on loan if Spurs are unwilling to part ways with him permanently.

Fans would be gutted

Fabio Paratici must avoid making a grave error following this update. The newly-appointed chief must keep hold of Rodon and refuse to allow him to join Brighton, especially on a permanent deal. With Nuno Santo coming through the door this summer, Rodon could have a chance to stake a claim for his place in the side and the Portuguese boss’ preferred formation could increase his chances of becoming a regular.

Santo lined up with three centre-backs, either in a three or a five, in 24 of Wolves’ 38 Premier League matches last season and all 38 of the games in the 2019/20 campaign. This suggests that he could look to employ a similar system in North London this year, which could open the door for Rodon play as one of the three central defenders in the team.

Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld all played more minutes in the Premier League for Spurs last season, but The Sun recently claimed that the club are open to selling any of those three this summer. Therefore, Rodon could become one of the three first-choice options in that area of the park.

Earlier this year, Jose Mourinho lavished praise on “brave” Rodon and refused to blame him for making a mistake in a Premier League clash with Liverpool as his overall performance was excellent.

He told the Evening Standard:

“He showed good personality, good concentration, was good on the ball. First half building well and going for duels. Not a coward for not to assume the duels, a brave boy to go for every duel, even against difficult opponents like they are.

Mourinho seemingly rated the £24k-per-week beast and saw potential in him at Tottenham. He did hand the centre-back 12 Premier League appearances, but opted to go with experience for the most part with a back four the most used formation for the club. This means that he was competing with Dier, Alderweireld and Sanchez for two spots in the team.

The fans would now be gutted if a promising young player is not offered the opportunity to show what he can do as part of a back three for Santo, given that the likes of Sanchez and Dier have hardly set the world alight.

Therefore, Paratici must reject any offers from Brighton – loan or permanent – for Rodon and keep him this summer. If it gets to January and he has not been able to force his way into the XI then they could reconsider their stance but for now, Rodon should stay.

AND in other news, Imagine him and Kane: Spurs must swoop for Nuno-approved beast compared to Haaland…

Sarwan, Hinds lead West Indies counter-attack

There is so much time left in this Test match and that is the key factor for both sides from here on

Anand Vasu19-Oct-2002There is so much time left in this Test match and that is the key factor for both sides from here on. At the end of the third day’s play, West Indies reached 186/4 and secured a slender lead of 37, but lost the vital wickets of Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the process. With two days left to play, India will now be keen to get into the West Indian tail soon and keep the target down to a minimum as batting last on this wicket will be difficult, even in the face of a modest target. It was a bit of a see-saw day for the Indians. Beginning the day on 190/5, they managed to reach 316 thanks to some positive batting from tail-enders Harbhajan Singh and Javagal Srinath. Once again, the West Indies had a poor session in the field, grassing as many as five catches. This was one of the major factors in ensuring that the home team gained a first innings lead of 149.In the morning, the fall of VVS Laxman’s wicket, caught and bowled by Gareth Breese for 24 did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of India’s lower-order batsmen.Harbhajan, in particular, was effective with his unorthodox strokes. Helped by the fact that the West Indies took the second new ball and sent down several short deliveries, the offie swished, swatted and swiped his way to 37 off just 43 balls, with the help of five boundaries and a six. By the time Merv Dillon put one delivery in the right slot and knocked over Harbhajan’s stumps, India had reached 255.Parthiv Patel, stroking the ball well but failing to find the gaps, made a laboured 23 before charging down the wicket and being stumped off the bowling of Breese.Srinath, who had prospered in Patel’s company, though, ensured that the visitors’ gained little heart from the dismissal, continuing to clatter the ball to all parts. When the bowling was full, the bat came neatly down the line and sent the ball sailing over the off side field. Anything short wascross-batted through midwicket. Scoring a crucial 39, Srinath made his primary job as a bowler much easier.Little did he know how easy though. In just the fourth ball of the West Indies second innings, Chris Gayle slashed a Javagal Srinath delivery down Anil Kumble’s throat at third man. The opener was dismissed for a duck even before his team’s innings could kick off.But with Wavell Hinds, Gayle’s opening partner, and Ramnaresh Sarwan forging a 96-run partnership for the second wicket, his loss was soon forgotten. Hinds was aggressive for 61 but it was that trait that eventually brought about his downfall. Attempting to hit Harbhajan Singh over the top, against the spin, Hinds only managed to top edge the ball for Ganguly to complete an easy catch. For once Chanderpaul, who replaced him, fell early. Flicking on the up to a delivery that was full and on his pads, Chanderpaul (3) only managed to hit a Srinath delivery straight to Harbhajan at midwicket.Hooper, in majestic touch, though, did not allow the West Indies innings to stutter, hitting three boundaries and two spectacular sixes in an innings of 46, but fell in the 52nd over of the innings when he attempted to push Kumble through the off-side. The googly came back in a touch, kissed the glove and went to Parthiv Patel behind the stumps.Ramnaresh Sarwan, criticised so many times for getting good starts and not going on, has batted well to reach 62. He will, however, have to do a lot more work tomorrow. The elegant middle-order batsman has showed that he clearly had class. Yet that alone is hardly going to be enough for the visitors.Ryan Hinds is at the wicket with Sarwan, with Ridley Jacobs and Gareth Breese to follow. The trio of all-rounders have done little to show that they can stay at the wicket for extended periods. Ganguly will bank on this when he sets his bowlers on the West Indians early on the penultimate day. A confident Virender Sehwag said earlier in an interview, "”We should be able to force a result on the fourth day itself.” The trail-blazing opening batsman also said, “There is lot of bounce and turn in the wicket and in the first innings our spinners got eight wickets. A lead of 150 should be enough for us to win.”India missed a lead of 150 by a whisker but should still have enough firepower to wrap this game up on the fourth day.

Sri Lanka manager reacts angrily to false allegations

Sri Lanka team manager Chandra Shaffter reacted angrily on Sunday to mediareports that he had been sacked following a disagreement with the chairmanof the selectors

CricInfo16-Jun-2002Sri Lanka team manager Chandra Shaffter reacted angrily on Sunday to mediareports that he had been sacked following a disagreement with the chairmanof the selectors.According to reports, Shaffter, 72, was unceremoniously dumped following acomplaint by Guy de Alwis, the chairman of the selectors, to the Sri Lankancricket board hierarchy that he’d been refused entry to the players’dressing room at the Edgbaston Test. This is vigorously denied by Shaffter: "It’s totally false. Guy de Alwisnever requested entry to the dressing room. Had he done so then I wouldnaturally have provided permission, as I did to the chairman of the interimcommittee, who was also at the game.""I spoke to Guy de Alwis this morning and he was very apologetic, sayingthat he had never said such a thing, claiming it to be a total fabrication. He will be issuing a rebuttal shortly."Indeed, De Alwis, when contacted at his Colombo home on Sunday evening, appeared to be equally infuriated by the allegations, claiming "there was notruth at all in the statements that have been made."Shaffter points out that he was not sacked per se, but had simply been toldthat his contract would not be renewed on Saturday morning by AnuraTennekoon, the chief executive of the Board of Control for Cricket in SriLanka (BCCSL)."I was originally asked to serve until the 2003 World Cup, but I preferred acontract only until the end of the England tour, after which I would look itagain, taking into account my business and family commitments. The BCCSLwould also then have an opportunity to decide whether they wanted me for alonger term," says Shaffter. On Saturday morning: "The BCCSL informed me that they would not renew thecontract and they are perfectly entitled to do that – they haven’t doneanything wrong by me. To claim it was a sacking is inaccurate."Not that he’s been surprised by the negative spin put on the BCCSL’sdecision, which was leaked to the media on Saturday night: "I suppose thatis what my detractors were trying to achieve, making out that I had beensacked when actually my contract had simply not been renewed. It is annoyingbut not surprising – it’s in keeping with past conduct towards me and Irather expected it."Indeed, in October 1999, during his last stint as the team manager, he waseven more bizarrely dismissed: "Two days before we were about to depart forZimbabwe, I was sacked on the grounds that I was a terrorist, working withthe LTTE."Because of the political nature of cricket appointments in Sri Lanka,Shaffter never looked likely to have his contract renewed after wholesaleresignations from the cricket board early on in the England tour. And, sure enough, it wasn’t long before he had his knuckles rapped, BCCSLofficials complaining that he’d acted without proper authority when allowingtwo non-members of the tour party to play against Glamorgan. He also had a frosty relationship with the media, both in Sri Lanka andEngland, over his reluctance to allow the press access to the players – asure way of making enemies. Some of the attacks appeared political, such as criticism in some sectionsof the Sri Lankan media for his decision to fine Chaminda Vaas, for lettinga masseur stay overnight in his hotel room, on the morning of a triangularfinal at Sharjah – a decision, it was argued, that undermined team spiritand contributed to the team’s dire performance.Shaffter is unsure as to the exact reasons for his contract not beingrenewed: "They didn’t provide any reason for their decision, but in fairnessto them I don’t think they have to give me any reasons and I certainly wasn’t going to ask."No official BCCSL release has been issued to the media. He will remain on for the Natwest triangular series before returning to takecharge of his business, Janashakthi Insurance, a leading insurance companyin Sri Lanka.

Zimbabwe tighten their grip on Test against Bangladesh

By the close of play on the third day at Queens Sports Club, Zimbabwe, although playing rather erratically, were slowly tightening their grip on the First Test match

John Ward21-Apr-2001By the close of play on the third day at Queens Sports Club, Zimbabwe, although playing rather erratically, were slowly tightening their grip on the First Test match. After taking a first-innings lead of exactly 200, they took two Bangladeshi wickets for 91 runs when bad light stopped play prematurely. The day started with Bangladesh taking the second new ball immediately, while Zimbabwe responded with much more enterprise than they had shown the previous evening. The visitors were missing Khaled Mashud, who fractured his fibula in the lethal pre-play warm-ups, and Mehrab Hussain substituted behind the stumps. The 300 soon came up in the 89th over. Streak enjoyed a life in the slips when on 39, and ran quickly through the forties to his fifth Test fifty. He had clearly set his mind on a Test century but unfortunately for him when on 67 he pushed a firm catch into the covers off Manjural Islam, while debutant Andy Blignaut was caught and bowled first ball off a leading edge. Zimbabwe were 353 for seven and Manjural had taken five wickets on his debut.Grant Flower was rather slower to reach his half-century, and he and Nkala dug in so deeply that one would have thought Zimbabwe were battling to save the follow-on. Flower scored only 22 in the morning session and astonished everybody with fours off the first two balls after lunch, although admittedly one was a thick edge through the slips. He now moved quickly to 68 before hooking a bouncer from Hasibul Hussain right down the throat of deep fine leg.Mluleki Nkala and Brian Murphy were obviously under instructions to squeeze out as many runs as they could, and they applied themselves diligently to the task that some of the top order should have done. Both passed their previous highest Test scores, and Nkala made 47 before being another batsman to be bounced out, caught this time by the keeper. There was a brief but entertaining last-wicket stand between Murphy (30) and Brighton Watambwa (4 not out) before the former was caught at short-leg off Naimur Rahman. Zimbabwe were all out for 457, a lead of exactly 200, and tea was taken. Manjural Islam took six wickets for 81 on his debut, which was also the best for Bangladesh in their two-Test career.Streak began with a couple of wayward deliveries when Bangladesh went in again, but enjoyed some good fortune when Mehrab Hossain (0) drove at a half-volley and played it on to his middle stump via the inside edge.Zimbabwe kept an attacking field but Blignaut, especially, was not always accurate enough to warrant it, and Bangladesh kept the runs coming through positive play. Streak too was well below his best but Watambwa had Habibul Bashar (24) swatting a short ball to cover.Javed Omar was again in good form, but enjoyed a life on 47 when Watambwa put down a return catch off a leading edge. Shortly after, at 4.35 with nine overs remaining to be bowled, the umpires offered the batsmen the light and they naturally came off, with the score 91 for two (Javed still 47, Aminul Islam 5).

Yorkshire reach quarter-finals with victory over Durham

Darren Lehmann scooped his third gold award in eight days to set up Yorkshire for victory by 30 runs over Durham at Headingley in the Benson and Hedges Cup.Both sides left the ground content with their day’s work, however, because both qualified for the quarter-finals, Durham filling second place in their group and Yorkshire scraping through in third place on run-rate.Durham’s reward is a visit to Bristol to take on title-holders Gloucestershire while Yorkshire meet Somerset down the road at Taunton.Lehmann’s dazzling 88 off 77 balls with 11 fours and two sixes was packed with astonishing strokes and it ensured Yorkshire a healthy total of 257 for seven after being put in to bat.Skipper David Byas and Michael Vaughan gave Yorkshire the solid start they needed with an opening stand of 71 but it was Anthony McGrath and Lehmann who piled the pressure on Durham with a 114 partnership for the third wicket.McGrath was then out for 43 but Lehmann continued his spree until he denied himself a century by clipping Danny Law to Paul Collingwood at mid-wicket. The Australian suffered a slight hamstring strain during his innings but should be fit for Wednesday’s CricInfo Championship clash with Somerset at Headingley.Despite Yorkshire’s aggressive approach, 20-year-old Ian Hunter finished with the excellent figures of four for 48 off his ten overs.Durham’s top priority when they batted was not to win the game but to make sure of reaching 193, which would lift them above Yorkshire even if they lost. They went about their work with great confidence, despite opener Jimmy Daley having to hobble off with a hamstring injury when 14, and they were held together for 31 overs by Michael Gough who scored 58 with five fours before falling to a boundary catch off Vaughan, having survived a similar chance earlier on.With 193 safely achieved, Jon Lewis and Law were able to breath more easily and at the close their unbroken fifth wicket stand was worth 101, Law leading the way with 57 from just 43 balls with eight fours and two sixes while Lewis managed 45 from 59 deliveries with six boundaries.

Leicester linked with Nathan Collins

Leicester City could land their next Harry Maguire this summer in the shape of Stoke City defender Nathan Collins.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Express (via Leicestershire Live), the Foxes are interested in signing the 20-year-old over the upcoming transfer window after impressing throughout 2020/21.

The report also claims that fellow Premier League clubs Arsenal and Burnley are keen on the £15m- rated Collins as the race for his signature intensifies.

Next Harry Maguire

Brendan Rodgers has already made significant steps to try strengthen his squad in recent weeks, with deals for Boubakary Soumare and Odsonne Edouard nearing completion.

Another young star who the former Liverpool and Celtic boss reportedly wants at the King Power Stadium is Collins.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international impressed at Stoke last season, making 27 appearances in all competitions, becoming the club’s youngest-ever captain in the Carabao Cup win over Wigan and achieving a respectable WhoScored rating of 6.82 in the process.

A serious injury in February cut short the youngster’s maiden campaign in senior football, but it doesn’t appear to have put off any potential suitors.

The 20-year-old showcased his versatility last term, featuring at right-back on 10 occasions, making him an ideal signing for Rodgers, who likes to alternate between a back four and a back five.

Collins’ magnificent displays at the Bet365 Stadium earned high praise from team-mate and compatriot James McClean, illustrating the quality and potential of the Leicester target.

“The lad has a big future in the game. Being a teammate of his at Stoke it’s great for Stoke, and at international level, it’s good for Ireland going forward,” said the 32-year-old winger.

“Without putting too much pressure on him, I think he’ll have a big career.”

The last time the Foxes took a gamble on an imposing British centre-back plying his trade with a Championship club, things worked out pretty well.

Harry Maguire was a Leicester player for just two seasons, joining after Hull’s relegation in 2017, but he made the club around £65m in profit. If Collins can get anywhere near the level of the current Manchester United captain, then his potential arrival at the King Power will surely go down as another hugely astute purchase from Jon Rudkin.

Transfer update on Urhoghide emerges

Sheffield Wednesday have been dealt a huge blow to their chances of keeping Osaze Urhoghide at Hillsborough this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that it appears increasingly likely that the centre-back will reject the Owls’ offer of a new deal, as interest is growing in the 20-year-old ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Both Xisco Munoz’s Watford and Mick McCarthy’s Cardiff City sides are reported to be extremely keen on a move for the £270k-rated defender this summer, who, unless he signs a new contract with Wednesday, will become a free agent next month.

Moore will be gutted

Having made a handful of appearances for Sheffield Wednesday last season, Urhoghide went on to establish himself as a regular part of the Owls first-team squad in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign.

Over his total of 16 Championship appearances this term, the youngster put in a number of solid performances for Darren Moore’s side, helping the Owls to keep three clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.6 interceptions, 1.8 tackles and 2.7 clearances per game – with these metrics seeing the centre-back earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.63.

However, while this is by no means mind-blowing form, it must be said that being thrown into the heart of a defence that is in the midst of a relegation fight is no easy task, let alone as a player with so little first-team football behind them.

Indeed, the 20-year-old is extremely highly thought of at Hillsborough, with Yorkshire Live’s Dom Howson referring to the former AFC Wimbledon man as a promising prospect with a big future at the club, while Darren Moore has claimed Urhoghide is “immense” and “absolutely rock solid” in defence.

As such, the prospect of losing the centre-back this summer will likely come as a gutting blow for the 47-year-old Owls boss, who has claimed that he will be building a side based upon the club’s most talented youngsters for their upcoming campaign in League One.
