Patel fronts up to England failings

Maybe they are in denial or maybe he was simply in an impossible position, but there were times when it was hard to remain straight faced when Samit Patel spoke to the media after the second day’s play in Ahmedabad.

Maybe they are in denial or maybe he was simply in an impossible position, but there were times when it was hard to remain straight faced when Samit Patel spoke to the media after the second day’s play in Ahmedabad. It was not his laudable faith in his teammates, or his admirable desire to fight from the desperate position in which England find themselves that provoked the raised eyebrows. Both are to his credit. It was the insistence, in the face of all facts, that England were “good players of spin” that was hard to take. For England, with one or two notable exceptions, are not good players of spin. The record does not suggest that. It grabs us by the shoulders and screams in our faces. It has been proved over the last year really rather often and no amount of insistence otherwise will change that. Only an improvement in form will do so.Patel’s explanation for England’s struggles in their reply was also grimly amusing. “The ball’s harder and I think it spins more when the ball’s harder,” he explained. And, while there is some truth in that, it ignores the fact that England also had a new ball. In fact they had two of them.To be fair to Patel, he was in an almost impossible position. Having been kept out in the field for the best part of two days and then lost early wickets, there was little positive to take from proceedings. At least when he spoke of the challenge ahead, his words rang true.”We have two world-class batsmen at the crease,” he said. “Ian Bell is still to come, there’s me and there is Matt Prior. There is a lot of batting. There’s no question about how long we can bat. We’ve got the same potential of batting as India have and we’ve got to keep believing that. I think the telling time will be when the ball gets soft; then we can get in.”We’ve put in the hard yards; we know what we can do. Tomorrow, we hope we can show what we’re made of. We’re going to have to play some good cricket. It’s hard work – but that’s Test cricket. We have to front up. We can’t go anywhere. We’ve got to stand up and be counted. It’s no place for hiding.”Patel was also quite right to acknowledge that India’s batsmen had played beautifully. “Sometimes you have to give credit to the batsmen,” he said. “Sehwag played outstandingly well and Pujara carried on. Yuvraj played as he does. They’re good players of spin. As the Indians showed, if you bat a long time, you can wear teams down. That’s what they did. It’s something we expected. You lose the toss, and field for two days. We knew what was coming and we’re prepared.”

'Dravid walked through obstacles, not around them'

It was an evening filled with emotion in Mumbai, as former team-mates paid rich tribute to the retired Rahul Dravid at a felicitation

Nagraj Gollapudi in Mumbai27-Mar-2012It was an evening filled with emotion in Mumbai – Rahul Dravid almost cried and VVS Laxman had moist eyes, while Anil Kumble, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni sang praises of Dravid, one of the flagbearers of Indian cricket’s golden generation. The occasion was Dravid’s felicitation by the BCCI, following his recently announced retirement from international and first-class cricket. Two of the biggest men in Indian cricket, BCCI president N Srinivasan (unwell) and Sachin Tendulkar (reasons unknown) might have been absent, but the event, which took place on the plush lawns of a five-star hotel, was still very well attended. Many prominent former cricketers – including Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Wadekar, Bishan Bedi, Mohinder Amarnath and Dilip Vengsarkar – and the entire India squad that will play the one-off Twenty20 against South Africa, along with senior BCCI officials, were there. After a recorded message from Srinivasan played out, Kumble, Ganguly, Laxman and Dhoni walked up to the podium to pass on messages of thanks to Dravid. He was ‘Jam’ to his contemporary, Kumble, and ‘Rahul ‘ to younger team-mate and captain Dhoni, who said Dravid was Indian cricket’s man Friday.”He was someone who would walk through obstacles, not someone who would go around the obstacles,” Dhoni said, summing up the character of Dravid who, all the speakers agreed, was always willing to give his all at all times. “He was someone who was ready to do anything and everything needed for the team: whether it came to opening the innings, wicketkeeping, or standing at slips or silly point, his answer was always ‘yes’,” Dhoni said. He also reserved special praise for Dravid’s wicketkeeping skills, saying “some of the catches he took, may be a regular wicketkeeper would never have taken [them]”.Dhoni said it was not only him, but all the younger players who were paying a tribute to Dravid through him. Dravid, he said, always prepared the same meticulous way, no matter who the opponent was.Rahul Dravid said the players’ performance along with the support from the BCCI had helped India move from being regarded as “second-class citizens” to “dictating terms”•AFP

Ganguly, under whose captaincy Dravid played some of his best innings, said having Dravid as a deputy was a ‘pillow of comfort’. He held Dravid and the then coach John Wright responsible for him finishing as one of the most successful India captains. “A lot of people talk about me being the captain, but behind the scenes lot of work was done by you [Dravid] and John, which made Indian cricket successful,” Ganguly said. “To sum-up your career I can say only one word: outstanding, and I’m sure you must be a proud man today. The contribution you made to Indian cricket [was] not just the runs you scored, but [the fact that] you played in an era in which Indian cricket went from strength to strength.”Kumble said one of Dravid’s biggest strengths was his commitment to the task. “We shared a lot of evenings out. He knew what I hated, what I’d order … he’d know what it was. When we were having discussions, we’d be lost in our own thoughts. He would probably be preparing [mentally] for the next day’s batting, or analysing the day’s play,” Kumble said. “This is what his commitment and pride for the game was. This is something that’ll be missed in the dressing room.”Laxman, Dravid’s best man on so many occasions including the historic Kolkata Test against Australia in 2001, said his forte was humility in the face of big accomplishments. “Even after so many achievements, he has always been level headed and for me that is his greatness,” Laxman said in an emotional speech, during which he urged everyone present to stand up and give his friend, Rahul, an ovation.Dravid, who walked in with his family, wife, children, parents and brother included, listened intently to every speaker and did not forget to thank each of these four former team-mates when his turn to talk came around. He said it was the players’ performance along with the support from the BCCI that had helped India move from being regarded as “second-class citizens” to “dictating terms” in international cricket. Before he said his final goodbye, Dravid told Dhoni and the rest of the India squad that he was certain that Indian cricket’s legacy was now in safe hands. “I may not be playing for India anymore but to the present Indian team what I would like to say is: guys, I will watch with great interest what I think is an extremely exciting and really talented group of young cricketers,” he said. “I hope Indian cricket will always be a strong force, both on the field and off the field. And I have no doubt that I would take great pleasure, with a cup of tea and a biscuit in my hand, in watching you guys achieve great things.”

Numbers justify the selections – Wright

John Wright has said New Zealand will be “in a better position to pick a side to play South Africa” after trying out several uncapped players against Zimbabwe

John Wright has said New Zealand will be “in a better position to pick a side to play South Africa” after trying out several uncapped players during the ODI and Twenty20 matches against Zimbabwe. However Wright, who is both New Zealand coach and selector, said the emphasis while playing Zimbabwe was “on winning the series, and always will be”.New Zealand named four uncapped players – left-arm seamer Michael Bates, legspinner Tarun Nethula, allrounder Andrew Ellis and wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham – in the ODI squad against Zimbabwe. They also picked Bates for the T20s, along with allrounder Colin de Grandhomme and left-arm spinner Ronnie Hira on the on the basis of their HRV Cup performances.”We’ve got Ross [Taylor] out, Jesse’s [Ryder] out. We had to find replacements. and tried to pick a side that has produced form this year,” Wright said. “I go through numbers really rigorously, I think that’s really important.””Plus, you look at someone like Latham and you think, ‘well, he’s had outstanding form, but it’s very early for him,’ then again, ‘against Zimbabwe, it’s probably not a bad time to have a look.’ There are some match-ups in both the teams [ODI and T20s] that we are interested to see how they fit into the team, how they conduct themselves and the quality of their cricket.”Latham is presently the top scorer in the Ford Trophy, New Zealand’s domestic one-day tournament, with 310 runs in five innings at a strike-rate of 94. He also made 61 runs in two innings at a strike-rate of 156 in the HRV Cup.While Latham and Ellis play for Canterbury, Bates and de Grandhomme represent for Auckland, the top two limited-overs sides in New Zealand. Wright said those players had contributed to the success of their teams.”The reason they were part of the two best teams was that individually they were some of the best-performed players. That’s how good teams get results, the individuals perform. The guys that have been selected, if you look at the numbers, they all justify the selections.”Someone like Luke Woodcock has been unlucky, but we have given the opportunity to Ronnie Hira and we also want to see how Nethula goes in the longer form of the game. That will give us a line on those two players as well. Then you match-up Ellis, who we feel could have been picked in either form of the game, we’ll get a line on him and Colin de Grandhomme. When asked if he was pleased with a specific selection, like Latham who is 19, Wright said: “Not really … but I’m pleased, I looked at perhaps Bates. He’s been around and he hasn’t had the opportunity at the international level. But he’s been a very good domestic performer for a couple of years now. We don’t know how he’s going to go at the top level, but he did bowl very well in the Champions League when he went to India, and he bowled well in the [HRV] final, which is a pressure situation. Let’s see how Michael takes that opportunity.”

Stringent screening for Pakistan player agents

Player agents have been made aware of the stringent screening they must now pass to represent Pakistani players following the spot-fixing scandal.

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Apr-2011

Mazhar Majeed’s alleged misdeeds have forced the introduction of player-agent screening in Pakistan•AFP

Player agents have been made aware of the stringent screening they must now pass to represent Pakistan cricketers following the alleged misdeeds of Mazhar Majeed during the spot-fixing scandal in England last year.Though the PCB had announced in September last year that all agents had to register with the board, details of the parameters of those wishing to represent Pakistan players, at home or abroad, have only recently been formulated and released now. They are available on the board’s website. As well as a number of financial requirements – upwards of Rs 200,000 for processing and administrative charges, a non-refundable amount – the applicants will also be required to provide a number of character clearances. These include clearances from police, the cricket board in the country where the applicant resides, as well as the Pakistan High Commission in the country where the applicant resides, in case the applicant lives abroad.Other requirements are also laid out, as a check on the applicant’s financial background and track record. At the end of every calendar year, the agent will be required to renew his registration, at a cost of Rs 100,000.The measures are part of the board’s continuing efforts to control the fall-out from last year’s spot-fixing scandal, which eventually saw three of its top players, including the Test captain Salman Butt, banned for a minimum of five years by an independent tribunal. Along with Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were found guilty of bowling pre-determined, deliberate no-balls during the Lord’s Test against England in August, at the alleged behest of their UK-based agent Majeed. The concept of player agents is not fully formed even now among Pakistan’s top players. Majeed looked after the commercial and sponsorship of a number of players in the side, but only in the UK and not with the degree of control agents for players from Australia and England have. Subsequently, Pakistan’s players have not benefited as well as players from around the world as more money and commercial opportunity has flooded into the game.A number of players involve members of the family – a brother or cousin – to handle commercial deals within Pakistan while a number of others have agents based in the UAE, the UK and even the USA.

Bess five-for puts Guyana on top

Brandon Bess began his Regional Four Day Competition campaign on a high, grabbing a five-for for Guyana against Jamaica at the Alpart Sports Club in St. Elizabeth. Four Jamaica batsmen, including Marlon Samuels and Brendan Nash, made 20s but failed to push on as Bess, with support from spinners Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul, ran through the line-up to bowl it out for 150. In their reply, Guyana lost opener Shemroy Barrington for 13 and ended the day on 32 for 1.Only 48 overs were possible on a rain-affected day at Guarancara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre where Barbados reached 133 for 2 against hosts Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados lost openers Dale Richards and Kraigg Brathwaite but Kirk Edwards finished with an unbeaten 75 to help lay a strong platform for his team.England Lions took control of their contest against Leeward Islands at the Warner Park in Basseterre, courtesy an unbeaten century from captain James Hildreth and his ongoing 186-run stand with James Taylor. Opener Adam Lyth led England’s charge at the top of the order, making a fluent 55 while Ravi Bopara chipped in with a steady 46. Leewards had evened things out when they had England Lions at 134 for 3, but Hildreth, who struck 13 fours, and Lyth, who supported him with 79, put the visitors on top.Windward Islands held a slight edge over Combined Campuses and Colleges on a wicket-filled day at the three Ws Oval in Bridgetown. A collective bowling effort from Windwards, led by the offspin of Liam Sebastien, skittled out CCC for 131. Sebastien grabbed three wickets, and was supported by Keon Peters and Keron Cottoy who picked up two each. Windwards had been shaping up well in their response with Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher and Keddy Lesporis each getting starts. But spin worked the magic again in the day as Ryan Austin and Nkruma Bonner shared four wickets to limit Windwards to 145 for 7 at stumps, a lead of just 14.
