Leeds: Raphinha was Bielsa’s unsung hero against Newcastle

A seven-goal thriller unfolded at Elland Road this evening as Leeds United hit top-flight rivals Newcastle for five in a tense Premier League battle.

Despite Steve Bruce’s side doing well to cancel out the Whites’ first two goals, their fluid attack proved to be too much for the opposition defence.

Not only did Leeds bank five goals, but they all came from different goal-scorers, which will be a great boost for the team’s confidence.

Jack Harrison seriously impressed by scoring and creating a goal, but one man who went under the radar with a creative showing was Raphinha.

Raphinha excels

The right-winger may not have got himself on the scoresheet or provided an assist, but his ability to create chances really helped Leeds secure their emphatic win tonight.

According to Sofascore, Raphinha completed 100% of his attempted dribbles and long balls, and also made two interceptions and two tackles.

Not only did he cause problems for the defence, but he also helped contribute to his own, striking a perfect balance between his attacking and defensive input.

As it stands, Leeds have three recognised right-wingers on their senior roster – Ian Poveda, plus summer signings Raphinha and Helder Costa have been competing for a spot in Marcelo Bielsa’s starting lineup.

The latter started the first eight games of the season before he started dropping to the bench in favour of his Brazilian teammate.

The 24-year-old signing has made a huge impact already and has impressed the likes of Phil Hay. The journalist lauded him for being a “bargain” signing after he joined from Rennes in October for £17m.

This win is a huge result for the Whites, who have now leapfrogged today’s opposition thanks to their hefty 5-2 scoreline. Their next match will be against Manchester United on Sunday, which will be a big hurdle to clear for the newly-promoted club.

Celtic must sign Charlton winger Alfie Doughty

When Kieran Tierney left Parkhead behind it was a sucker punch to their ambitions.

Yet again, a Celtic player was leaving for the Premier League, and once more, it was one of their star men.

The Hoops have been no strangers to seeing their most valuable assets leave. From Victor Wanyama to Moussa Dembele and Virgil van Dijk, a plethora of their top players have left in search of a top-five league.

Tierney is the most recent example, swapping Glasgow for London, joining Arsenal for £25m – a record sale for an SPFL player.

He has taken to the English top-flight like a duck to water, scoring and assisting in a rampaging display against West Brom last weekend. It was the type of performance that will have Celtic supporters craving a return.

However, for the time being, they have to settle for Greg Taylor and Diego Laxalt at left-back, two players who seldom replicate what Tierney can offer down the left flank.

Fortunately, they could be on the verge of finally landing the Scot’s true replacement. That happens to be Charlton winger Alfie Doughty.

Capable of playing as a left-back or further forward in attack, he has been continuously linked with the Bhoys since last summer. Though, in order to sign him, they will now have to fend off interest from Rangers.

Doughty is out of contract in the summer and thus, can be signed on a pre-contract agreement for a fee of absolutely nothing.

But why is he similar to Tierney? Well, a glowing review from The Athletic’s Nick Miller tells all: “Pace is the first thing you notice about Doughty. Remarkable pace. Relentless pace. The sort of pace that makes defenders cower and do very silly things indeed,” he wrote.

That is a frightening assessment, one that could well describe their former left-back. He demonstrates sheer speed on a regular basis, and like Doughty, makes defenders do rather strange and peculiar things.

Tierney showed that vs West Brom, taking Darnell Furlong for a walk before finding the back of the net in emphatic style.

Aged just 21, Doughty is the future and could well inspire Celtic to greater things.

Lawwell blunder: Celtic will rue missing out on Ivan Toney for a very long time

Celtic will still be hurting from Saturday’s embarrassing Old Firm derby defeat and things may not get easier anytime soon with fixtures against AC Milan in their Europa League opener and Aberdeen in the league to come this week.

Neil Lennon’s side sit four points behind league leaders Rangers, the side they failed to register a single shot on target against at the weekend.

Without the presence of Odsonne Edouard in the attack, the Hoops looked lifeless and devoid of any ideas and whilst that could well change with Albian Ajeti returning alongside the Frenchman in the near future, things aren’t exactly perfect for the Hoops.

The defending champions must be regretting the decision to not sign somebody to add more firepower in the summer transfer window, perhaps Ivan Toney specifically.

Peterborough United wanted £10m for his signature but the Bhoys hierarchy were only prepared to pay half that, leading to Posh chairman Barry Fry launching a scathing attack on the Scottish giants, he said:

They’ve told Peter Lawwell and Nicky Hammond to go and get him, but they won’t get Toney with what they’re piddling about with, that’s for sure. Toney would be a revelation for Celtic, he’d be a star, for definite. He’d score 30 to 40 goals up there, he really would.”

Brentford, who are known for their expertise in scouting, went on to sign the 24-year-old for an initial £5m, increasing to that £10m figure with add-ons.

On the same afternoon that Celtic fired a dud in front of goal, Toney went on to secure a match-winning brace for the Bees as they defeated Coventry City 2-0.

The former Newcastle frontman also won three duels, recorded one dribble and enjoyed four attempts on target, per SofaScore.

Toney’s two strikes made it five from five in the Championship this season, meaning he’s averaged one goal every 81 minutes, via Transfermarkt.

It’s no wonder he’s been lauded as a “top, top player” as well as a “dream” to work with due to his “phenomenal” workrate.

Lawwell has certainly made a foolish and unforgivable mistake here as an initial £5m upfront would have been an absolute steal – the bloke provided 26 goals and seven assists last term, that alone should’ve been enough to pull the trigger.

Edouard isn’t going to be around forever, and Toney appeared to be an ideal like-for-like successor in the long run, so Celtic could be feeling this one for years to come.

Rangers: Lovro Majer in demand

According to Calciomercato.com, Glasgow Rangers target Lovro Majer is now on the radar of Leeds United, Borussia Dortmund, Fiorentina, Valencia and Sevilla.

Majer in demand

The Gers were linked with a move for the U21 Croatia international back in January, when they were said to have already been scouting him for a number of months, implying the interest was fairly serious.

In the end, though, they moved for Ianis Hagi, who signed on loan on January 31st.

Now, it seems a number of Europe’s top sides are also eyeing the 22-year-old. Sportske Novosti reported in July that he would cost €6m (£5m), a fee that would be more than achievable for Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds – the Argentine coach has a reputation for developing young talent.

Better than Hagi?

Majer is an attacking midfielder, just like Hagi, and the former has really started to make an impact for Dinamo Zagreb this term. In ten games in all competitions, he has three goals and three assists, and is living up to his billing as the “new Modric” in his homeland.

Hagi has done relatively well so far this campaign, already picking up seven assists in all competitions. However, he has come in for criticism, as well. Would Majer have been a better fit for the 54-time Scottish champions before they moved for the Romania international? The interest in him from across the continent suggests big things are waiting for him in the future, and the Gers may have missed their chance if English top flight sides like Leeds swoop in.

Zaha enjoying his football at Crystal Palace is huge news for Eberechi Eze

Just the news that every Crystal Palace fan will have wanted to hear.

The Eagles have just beaten their local rivals Fulham 2-1, and, if that wasn’t enough, Wilfried Zaha is “enjoying his football” at Selhurst Park if recent reports are to be believed.

Having handed in a transfer request in the summer, Zaha has made no secret of his desire to leave Palace, but if The Evening Standard’s Malik Ouzia’s article is anything to go by, he may be open to staying at the club.

In fact, Dan Cook believes that Zaha could be convinced to stay if the club appoint a more attack-minded manager. Speaking on a recent episode of the HLTCO podcast, as quoted by This is Futbol, he said: “It may well be that he wouldn’t mind staying at Crystal Palace long-term if he was playing under a manager that gave him and everyone else around him a bit more attacking freedom.”

Whilst this probably won’t give Roy Hodgson a lot of confidence, Eberechi Eze may have just received the best news imaginable. It’s no secret that the 22-year-old is a big admirer of the Ivory Coast international, as he heaped praise on his teammate after playing alongside the forward in the 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic in a pre-season friendly.

Speaking after the game, Eze told the club website: “Linking with the attacking players was fun, it was good for me to get my fitness up and it’s just been a good performance.

“[Wilfried Zaha is] an amazing player. It’s good to play with guys like him and guys of his quality, because they see things others don’t see and it makes life a lot easier for yourself.”

Once hailed as an “outstanding” player by QPR boss Mark Warburton, Eze arguably hasn’t always had it easy, as he has been restricted to just two Premier League starts since joining Palace from Queens Park Rangers in the summer. Last season, the winger scored 14 goals and supplied 8 assists in the Championship, whilst he averaged 2.2 shots, 1.8 key passes and 3 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

He has also insisted he wanted to move to Selhurst Park in the first place to continue his development as a player, saying: “[The deal] definitely shows their [Palace’s] belief in me – and I want to be here, I want to play, I want to do as well as I can for this club and it’s a brilliant opportunity.

“It was the plan that was set out for me and what they’ve said about me and it’s the most in-line with what I feel about myself. For me, that’s the most important thing – more than ‘what the club is’ or whatever. I think the plan they have for me and where they see me, that’s what it is.”

If Zaha does end up staying for the rest of the season, then that will be a huge boost for Eze as he still has a lot to learn to grow and develop as a player, and who better to learn from than one of the best players in the club’s history? He just needs to be guaranteed game time, which is something that Hodgson has largely failed to provide so far.

Forget Sancho: Man United must secure deal for Erling Braut Haaland

Erling Braut Haaland scored a hattrick to make it six goals in six games as Norway ran riot over Romania in the Nations League. Heavily tipped to join Manchester United in the January transfer window, Haaland opted for Borussia Dortmund instead, and the Red Devils may already be ruing a missed opportunity.

What’s the word?

The 20-year-old put the home side ahead after 15 minutes and the Norwegians doubled their lead just before the half-time break thanks to a goal from former Crystal Palace striker Alexander Sorloth. Haaland’s second goal was simple but effective, a cool finish from six yards out.

But the best was yet to come, as he turned on the edge of the area, and rifled home a powerful strike past the helpless Romanian goalkeeper. Haaland has now scored an incredible 51 goals in his last 48 games for club and country.

According to ESPN, Haaland and Jadon Sancho remain at the top of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s list of transfer targets, despite the fact that United chief Ed Woodward has failed to sign either of the players in the past two transfer windows.

It’s also claimed that Manchester City are interested in signing the Borussia Dortmund star striker next summer. However, Man United must secure a deal for the £72m-rated ace.

Perfect fit?

Over the weekend, it was revealed that the Red Devils pulled out of a deal to sign Haaland in January as they refused to meet his agent Mino Raiola’s demands. They also rejected his camp’s request for a release clause to be inserted into the Old Trafford contract.

Given the fact that he only cost the German club a mere £17m, it seems that Dortmund have had the last laugh. The Norwegian international bagged 13 goals and 2 assists in 15 games in the Bundesliga last season, whilst he averaged 2.3 shots per game, via WhoScored. This season, he has already scored four goals in three games, taking 3.7 shots and 1.3 key passes per game, as per WhoScored. In comparison, United’s Anthony Martial has failed to score a single goal in the Premier League so far.

Sebastian Kehl, a back-to-back Bundesliga title winner under Jurgen Klopp, heaped plenty of praise on the “incredible” Haaland and believes that he can follow in the footsteps of his former teammate Robert Lewandowski, whilst Paul Scholes says that he wants his old side to sign Haaland or Kane instead of Sancho.

As is often the case, the Red Devils were in a mad rush and scrambled to sign Edinson Cavani, Amad Diallo, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri on deadline day. After arriving as a free agent, Cavani will earn wages worth £210,000-per-week, even though he hasn’t kicked a football since March and the 33-year-old has signed a two-year deal.

Whilst Solskjaer has bemoaned the lack of options on the right wing, Mason Greenwood, who has predominantly played as a centre-forward in the past, has shown he is more than capable of filling in in that position. Given the current circumstances, it’s hard to imagine United will be able to afford both Haaland and Sancho next summer, so Solskjaer, if he is still around, will have a tough decision to make.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs keen to sign Bundesliga star Weston McKennie

Jose Mourinho knows he must fix Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive problems sooner rather than later.

Tottenham have conceded more goals than Arsenal, Sheffield United and Premier League champions Liverpool this season amongst others.

While they seem to have turned things around at the moment, Spurs will be aware they must improve their defensive displays if they want to challenge for silverware in the future.

Tottenham have now turned their attentions to Schalke star Weston McKennie, reports say.

According to Football Insider, McKennie set to move away from FC Schalke 04 as they are struggling to cope with financial pressures.

Spurs are keen to sign the Bundesliga ace amid interest from a number of Premier League rivals, as well as Inter Milan and Hertha Berlin.

Despite his young age, the 21-year-old has impressed at Schalke, playing 28 games in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 3 goals, making 1.4 tackles per game, averaging 1.6 interceptions, and completing 1.3 clearances on average (via WhoScored).

After arriving at the VELTINS-Arena, the USA international has become a mainstay for the Miners, making over 91 appearances for the German club so far.

Reports indicate Schalke are seeking £27m to let him leave this summer.

After Toby Alderweireld came back into the side, Spurs have only conceded one goal in three games, but it is arguably too little, too late.

Tottenham’s record speaks for itself, and signing a new defensive minded midfielder to protect the backline could be what is needed to stabilise the team. The American’s stats suggest he can certainly play that role, he even averages more tackles, interceptions and clearances per league game than current Spurs man Harry Winks.

However, Daniel Levy has made it clear he will not be spending “rivers of money” in the summer, and McKennie may be too expensive to buy in the summer, as Spurs could have a transfer battle on their hands.

Tottenham fans, should Levy sign Weston McKennie this summer? Let us know down below!

Total Duds: Cross-city transfer not a success for Aston Villa

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.

With Aston Villa gaining promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-off final last term, boss Dean Smith looked to bring in a number of new faces in an attempt to build a squad capable of keeping them in the top-flight.

Sitting 19th in the league table as things stand, it remains to be seen if the current Villa squad have what it takes to remain among England’s elite.

One of those players to arrive last summer was Spanish attacker Jota, who sensationally completed a switch across from their fierce rivals Birmingham City for a fee believed to be £4.05m.

Having spent two years at St. Andrews, the A Pobra do Caramiñal born footballer made 75 appearances in which he found the back of the net eight times and gained 11 assists.

Those statistics were an obvious reason behind Smith completing a move, reuniting the pair after spending time together with Brentford.

However, things have simply not kicked on for Jota at Villa Park, playing in just nine Premier League games and starting just 13% of matches in the top flight. He hasn’t managed to score in that time, registering just one assist.

A lack of playing time and form mean it has been a season to forget for the Spaniard, added to by a training ground bust-up with Chelsea loanee Danny Drinkwater.

So what next for Jota? Well, that will very much depend on where Villa are playing their football next season.

A return to the Championship would arguably hand the 29-year-old a chance at gaining first team football, but also leave Villa fans wondering if things could have been a little better had he been given a chance in the Premier League.

If Villa remain in England’s top flight, Jota may be better leaving and finding first team football elsewhere.

What looks sure is that if he does leave, the club will struggle to recoup the fee they paid for him. Indeed his market value has now decreased to £3.15m, almost £1m down from the transfer fee attached to his move last summer. As things stand, Jota’s move to Villa Park has been a failure.

What do you make of Jota’s move to Villa and how do you feel he has got on? Let us know in the comments section below…
