Nottingham Forest fans respond to Richard Keogh’s Derby sacking

They don’t ever miss an opportunity do they?

The rivalry between Derby County and Nottingham Forest is a long and storied one, so whenever there’s a chance for one to poke fun or criticise the other, fans are going to do their best to get under each other’s skins. And when it’s a situation like this, they were never going to keep quiet.

The news came out yesterday that Derby County had decided to terminate the contract of their club captain Richard Keogh as he recovers from the injuries suffered in a crash with his teammates Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett back in September.

Check out Matchday with Max’s latest Nottingham Forest vlog in the video below…

Whilst there were some who used it as one final chance to have a pop at Keogh, there were others who decided to take a more serious tone about the incident and outright condemn their decision, pointing out the hypocrisy in letting the two main culprits Lawrence and Bennett still play for the club.

Taking to Twitter, they were rather divided on the matter. Here’s some of the reaction.

Liverpool fans react as James Pearce delivers update on Adam Lallana’s future

Lots of Liverpool fans have been reacting to an update from James Pearce, who expects the Reds to offload Adam Lallana despite his goal at Old Trafford. The England international had not found the net for the Reds since May 2017 before his strike on Sunday, but what a way to rediscover his goalscoring touch.Lallana ghosted in behind Manchester United’s impressively parked bus to tap in the equaliser at the back-post, with Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler proposing that the strike could get the 31 year-old’s career “back on trackâ€.Pearce though, writing for The Athletic, has stated that this is “likely†to be Lallana’s final season in a Liverpool shirt. He is out of contract next summer, and even though there is an option to extend it, the belief is that the option would only be used to increase his sell-on value and prevent losing him for free.Fans have produced a mixed reaction to the update, with some cursing his injury record and praising his talents, while others look to the future and eye up Marko Grujic as a potential replacement.Either way, you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Balbuena reminds Pellegrini of his ability with West Ham display

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

The performance of Fabian Balbuena against Sheffield United will have give Manuel Pellegrini food for thought, but it will be a positive selection dilemma that he has for once.

West Ham lack depth in a number of key areas, with Albian Ajeti’s four appearances suggesting he is not good enough to rival Sebastien Haller’s spot, while Mark Noble and Declan Rice also lack a competitive understudy.

By comparison, Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and now Balbuena have all impressed this term, so the Chilean will have to give some consideration as to who should get the nod.

Last season his preferred option at centre-back was Diop, with Balbuena and Ogbonna often rotated.

But if the Italian is left out again it could soon begin to upset the fans who have lavished praise on him recently, particularly if West Ham don’t improve defensively, having not kept a clean sheet in their last five games.

As a result, the Hammers boss would perhaps be best suited to sticking with Ogbonna and Diop, but the ability of Balbuena should fill him with confidence and reason for optimism.

The Blades didn’t create a great deal on Saturday but their strikers had few opportunities due to the organisation of West Ham’s defence, with Balbuena’s stats from WhoScored displaying the contribution he made.

He outperformed many of his teammates against Chris Wilder’s side, both with and without the ball.

Only Pablo Zabaleta managed more than his combined total of two tackles and two interceptions, which suggests that his positioning was effective, and if Balbuena can use that aspect of his game to negate the weakness of his lack of pace he could become a regular once again.

In terms of his passing, he showed he could be pivotal to starting attacks, too, and that could be crucial in a side which has scored just 12 goals in ten league games.

He managed as many accurate long balls as Noble, with four, and bettered that of Felipe Anderson, and West Ham could miss that aspect of his game if the 28-year-old was to be left out.

Pellegrini, therefore, has different advantages in his players which could serve him well, so he will likely appreciate the various effective options that are at his disposal.

Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse showing signs he can adapt to new position

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

If a midfield player hits seven goals in one season, you could say that they had a fairly successful campaign.

And if those goals come from a young player you may expect them to develop even further and become pivotal for their side in the following campaign, but that is not true of Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.

The academy graduate scored seven goals in 26 appearances in the 2018/19 campaign, where he looked a good bet to kick on and carry his impressive form into the 2019/20 season.

However, the 24-year-old has struggled in the early parts of the season, especially in his new right attacking-midfield role in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s 4-2-2-2 system.

The midfielder lacks pace, so he is unable to burn down the flank on the outside of defenders, whereas his chance creation and goalscoring instincts have recently been non-existent.

He didn’t have a single shot or dribble in the games against Brighton and Manchester United – as we previously outlined when tipping him to be a causality of the 4-2-2-2 formation – while his only goal contribution so far this season has been from the penalty spot against Bournemouth.

Additionally, a lot of Southampton fans on Twitter took aim at him for his performance in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea at St Mary’s recently.

In the 1-1 draw against Wolves last time out however, the England U21 international showed signs of promise.

Having previously struggled on the right, Ward-Prowse lined up in the same role, albeit this time in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

In this instance, the 5 foot 8 man was effective. He had two shots at goal, both of which were on target, whilst Ward-Prowse also made three key passes against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Having previously recorded a grand total of zero contributions in both of those departments against the Seagulls and the Red Devils – as aforesaid – his performance in the Midlands served to suggest that Ward-Prowse is slowly adapting to the role and can be an influential figure there.

Hasenhuttl has stuck by him, and he may be about to get his reward for doing so – if Ward-Prowse’s showing at Molineux was anything to go by, that is.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith reveals the only time he’s not enjoyed current role

It’s fair to say that Dean Smith is one of the best managers Aston Villa have had in recent years.

The Villans finally returned to the Premier League under the tutelage of the former Brentford boss, and this Thursday marked one year since Smith took over at Villa Park.

It’s certainly been an eventful year for the Midlands club since the 48-year-old was appointed.

Largely it’s been full of positives as Aston Villa achieved promotion last season. However, Smith has said there is only one moment that he didn’t enjoy since he took charge.

Indeed, Smith said that he’s enjoyed every moment of being Aston Villa manager, except for their game against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium last term.

Just reading that last sentence has probably brought back terrible memories for a number of Villa fans, as their team were beaten 3-0 by the Lancashire outfit back in January.

You can understand why the gaffer didn’t enjoy watching his team get hammered by a side that they should have been beating, as the Latics finished 13 places below Villa last term.

Sheffield Wednesday’s predicted starting XI under Danny Cowley

[ad_pod ]

Sheffield Wednesday head into the international break with quite the dilemma if reports are to be believed.

On Tuesday evening, Sky Sports claimed the club were in advanced talks with Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley and his assistant, brother Nicky, over becoming their permanent manager.

Currently, the club have had Lee Bullen in caretaker charge for a third spell after Steve Bruce left on the eve of the new season last month.

Earlier in the week, Tony Pulis had been linked to the job by The Sun, but it appears that Cowley could be a serious contender to the post.

The 40-year-old rejected a move to Huddersfield in order to continue his journey at the Imps, so it remains to be seen whether or not he will actually become the Owls’ new boss.

This is how Wednesday could lineup under Cowley:

In four years at the club, the Cowley’s have guided Lincoln to two promotions as well as an EFL Trophy – playing very much the same brand of football throughout.

They believe in their philosophy and stick to it.

The formation most used by the management team is a 4-4-1-1 which utilises a lone target man in attack with a deep-lying forward playing just off him, and it is something that the Owls do have at their disposal with both Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri being able to occupy those two spots.

Cowley also likes his team to play out from the back so it could see Sam Hutchinson drop into defence having played in midfield this season because he averages a passing success rate of 83.5% which is higher than Tom Lees (72.8%), whilst Julian Borner is likely to play alongside him (83.7%).

Jacob Murphy can play the inside forward role on the left-flank, averaging 2.2 shots per game as well as 2.6 dribbles, per WhoScored. He’s also scored one goal in four starts this season.

On the other side, Adam Reach can become the more traditional winger, whipping in crosses for the target man – he averages 0.8 per game and has already recorded one assist this season.

It would appear that Wednesday have all the tools needed to suit a Cowley system, meaning the lack of a transfer window shouldn’t be too much of an issue. It’s just if he can make the next step up, a considerable step up at that.

Jamie Shackleton is Leeds United’s one to watch this season

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s One to Watch series, which focuses on those players we think are particularly worth keeping an eagle-eye on as the 2019/20 season unfolds.

Jamie Shackleton will be hoping for more first-team opportunities in the forthcoming season after his promising 2018/19 campaign at Leeds United.

What’s the story so far?

The Leeds youngster earned his first Championship start in a tricky away trip against Swansea in August 2018, as injuries forced the midfielder to slot in at right-back as Luke Ayling shifted into the centre of the defence.

Shackleton was unfazed by the challenge and impressed at full-back, providing an assist for Kemar Roofe with an intelligent cutback in what was a thrilling match at the Liberty Stadium, with both sides eventually sharing the points.

This was to be the first of many appearances for the Englishman, who went on to register 19 league appearances.

And despite the fact only three of those appearances were made from the outset, his performances illuminated a level of potential that suggests regular starts could be looming on the horizon.

What’s 2019/20 got in store for Shackleton?

The Championship is a gruelling 46-game campaign and one that demands a squad beaming with the stamina and determination to overcome the challenge.

Shackleton’s debut campaign yielded some good appearance figures, but after a year working with Bielsa he should be pushing for a regular place in the Argentine’s starting XI.

As the schedule gets busier, Shackleton’s versatility can allow him to cover in both defensive and midfield areas to cover for injured or jaded players, while it would not be wild to suggest he could consistently start on merit alone.

With Pontus Jansson departing for Brentford and Aapo Halme moving to Barnsley, there’s a sparsity of options in central defence for Bielsa to choose from, with Ben White, Gaetano Berardi and Liam Cooper the three recognised options.

Ayling could well move into central defence to fill a potential gap as could Kalvin Phillips. Tweaking the position of either of those two players to address a defensive shortage could pave a clear path in the starting XI for Shackleton, and Leeds’ refusal to address an apparent problem area hints the club trust the 19-year-old to slot into the team in either of his favoured positions.

[ad_pod ]

What constitutes a good season for Shackleton?

Shackleton is a talented product of the academy and, given the progress he’s already made, he should be aiming for regular involvement this season.

He should be looking to become a comfortably rotated player, as someone who can slot in where necessary, perform to a solid standard and earn the trust of both the Elland Road faithful and his manager.

Huge strides have already been made in that regard but changes in expectation have shifted the dynamic ahead of the new season as Shackleton leaves the luxury of relative anonymity behind in the 2018/19 season.

Will he thrive, crumble or stagnate under a fresh set of circumstances? This is a player for both Leeds and neutral fans to monitor throughout the campaign.

Shackleton should target…

Appearances: 25

Starts: 15
