Andre Gray set for QPR loan switch

Watford striker Andre Gray looks set to join QPR on a season-long loan, with The Athletic reporting that he has undergone a medical with the Championship club.

What’s the word?

Adam Leventhal confirmed on Twitter that the 30-year-old will join Mark Warburton’s side for the rest of the season, with first-team chances at Watford always likely to be hard to come by for Gray this season.

The former Burnley marksman is arguably behind the likes of Emmanuel Dennis, Ashley Fletcher, Josh King and Joao Pedro in the pecking order at Vicarage Road, and hopefully this loan spell can increase Gray’s value ahead of a potential permanent exit in the future.

Will Watford fans be glad to see Gray leave?

Since signing from Burnley in a club-record fee of around £18.5m back in 2017, Gray has made 121 appearances for the Hornets, contributing a disappointing 21 goals and eight assists.

Last season saw the Jamaica international manage just five goals in 30 Championship appearances, so it was perhaps always likely that he would be moved on this summer when new attacking signings were made.

Whilst Watford fans may have preferred a permanent move for the striker, sending him to the Championship on loan is the first step towards him leaving Vicarage Road for good; and with his contract set to expire at the end of this season, it seems as if Hornets fans have seen the last of him in a Watford shirt.

However, it does likely mean that the club will be able to free up some of the reported £70k that Gray earns every week, which could potentially be put towards a new signing before the transfer deadline this evening.

Either way, after his disappointing performances last term and lack of appearances this season, Watford fans will surely be relieved to see the £3.6m-rated Gray leaving the club this summer.

Leeds United interested in Daryl Dike

Leeds United are eyeing a late transfer window move for Orlando City striker Daryl Dike.

What’s the story?

According to reports in previous weeks and months, Marcelo Bielsa’s side were named among the clubs interested in signing the 20-year-old this summer, with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea also said to have been impressed by his performances on loan at Barnsley last season.

And now, writing on Twitter, TEAMtalk’s editor, James Marshment, revealed: “TEAMtalk has been informed that Leeds are looking at the possibility of signing Daryl Dike on loan from Orlando City before the window closes. USA striker notched 9 in 19 for Barnsley last season. West Brom also keen. Story to follow….”

Fans will be buzzing

Just a few days after Bielsa himself admitted that any new signings could be unlikely before the end of the transfer window, it appears the Whites are still exploring every possible avenue behind the scenes.

The 20-year-old was in fine form after joining Championship outfit Barnsley on loan back in the January transfer window, netting nine goals in just 19 league games.

A player profile done by SBNation noted: “A physical striker, Dike is more than a bruising finisher. His ‘delicate touch’ and high level of technical ability belie his size, enabling a confidence in possession with both passing and dribbling. That said, he scores a lot of goals in a variety of ways. Headed finishes, short-range placement, and long-range bombs, the 6’2” attacker can do it all.”

Given the lack of genuine first-team cover behind Patrick Bamford up front – Rodrigo was deployed in the number nine role in the Carabao Cup second round clash against Crewe – Dike’s arrival, even on a temporary basis, would go a long way to addressing that need.

And with his style of play being so distinctly different to anything Leeds and Bielsa currently have at their disposal, he could give them a different dimension when starting games or even just coming off the bench.

After hearing news that they would be unlikely to make any further moves in the transfer market, this latest update on their pursuit of Dike is sure to have fans delighted.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing this young record-breaker…

Zimbabwe accused of duplicity over Kenya tour

Confusion surrounds the announcement that Zimbabwe will not be able to host Kenya for three ODIs in December

Steven Price05-Dec-2008Confusion surrounds the announcement that Zimbabwe will not be able to host Kenya for three ODIs in December, despite bullish comments from Zimbabwe cricket officials last week that the series looked likely. The official reason given was that Zimbabwe have no time between now and January 4, when they head to Bangladesh. However, they have no cricket scheduled for the next month and have only managed to play a derisory 12 ODI matches in the whole of 2008.Cricinfo has now learned that ZC was never considering hosting the series despite comments to the contrary from its media manager at the weekend that a memorandum of understanding was being drafted.Despite attempts by Cricket Kenya to arrange the trip, at the weekend they were presented out of the blue with an offer for Zimbabwe to visit, giving them less than a fortnight to arrange a mass of things such as venues, officials and television coverage.Logistically, that was never a realistic option, and a CK official told Cricinfo the board would have loved to host the series had it been given adequate notice. As it was, December is a busy time for Kenyan tourism and many hotels are already fully booked, and players and officials have made alternative arrangements. That Kenya were not invited to Zimbabwe helped their board out of a potentially difficult decision. With water supplies cut off in Harare as well as the city being in the middle of a cholera outbreak and a state of emergency being declared, it would have been a tough call for CK.”What is shows, yet again, is that the story peddled by the [Zimbabwe] board and the reality of what goes on behind the scenes are two quite different things,” a local reporter told Cricinfo. “The deal put to the Kenyans was done so the board could say it had tried, but it knew the proposal left the Kenyans with no alternative but to decline it.”

Hughton must unleash James Garner vs Wolves

Having suffered four defeats in their opening four fixtures of the Championship season, it is evident that Chris Hughton’s Nottingham Forest require a number of further additions in the summer transfer market if the Reds are to have any hope of mounting a successful campaign this year.

However, the recent re-signing of Manchester United midfielder James Garner on a season-long loan would certainly appear to be a step in the right direction for the Garibaldi. After scoring four goals and averaging two tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per game, the 20-year-old ranked as Forest’s best performer in the league last term.

With a Carabao Cup fixture against Wolves tonight, a game which is unlikely to be a priority for Hughton this season, especially considering his side’s current league form, the 62-year-old has been presented with a perfect opportunity to blood the man who Fred dubbed an “incredible” player back into his side.

Indeed, despite completing a full pre-season with Manchester United, the £3.6m-rated Garner has not featured in a competitive fixture since Forest’s 2-1 defeat against Preston North End back in May.

As such, it would seem probable that Garner is lacking a considerable amount of match fitness, something which tonight’s clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers could help him to regain.

Furthermore, with the fixture being somewhat risk-free for the Garibaldi, it would not be damaging if the youngster didn’t perform to the best of his ability in the clash, with the building of his fitness being the primary goal of his potential appearance.

Considering the distinctly average performances of Jack Colback so far this season, with the 31-year-old averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.67 over his three Championship appearances this month, it would appear wise for Hughton to do all he can to get the £16k-per-week Garner up to speed as quickly as possible, particularly as the Reds face their arch-rivals Derby County in the Championship this weekend.

Journalist: Manchester United are frontrunners for Varane deal

Manchester United are the frontrunners to sign Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane this summer, according to Spanish football journalist Euan McTear.

After losing Sergio Ramos to PSG earlier this summer, Real Madrid won’t want to lose another star centre-back but with only one year left on his contract, the Spanish giants may look to cash-in on him, rather than risk losing him for free next year.

After playing for France at the Euros, Varane will now turn his attention back to club football and where he will be playing this season coming, with McTear telling TT: “At this point, Manchester United seem like the frontrunners”.

Varane has played plethora of trophies in his time at the Bernabeu and McTear thinks there’s definitely a space for the French defender at Old Trafford.

He added: “They’re are one of the clubs that do have a space there, next to Maguire there is a question mark, some of the other clubs have their two settled centre-backs so Manchester United makes a bit of sense”.

It looks like United are ready to make their move for Varane, with The Guardian reporting that the Red Devils are preparing a bid and that Varane would like to play in the Premier League.

Logan Cup: Round three Preview

The Logan Cup competition for this season would be very exciting, were it not for the fact that Mashonaland are once again almost certain to win

John Ward26-Oct-2002The Logan Cup competition for this season would be very exciting, were it not for the fact that Mashonaland are once again almost certain to win. The other three teams are very evenly matched; Midlands looked the strongest of the three at the start of the season but have not yet lived up to their potential, while Manicaland, perhaps the weakest on paper, secured a narrow victory over Midlands last weekend. The table, compiled by ZCU administration manager Ian Robinson, is produced below. 12 points are awarded for a win and 3 for a draw.

This weekend sees the third round out of six; the competition will be completed after the World Cup in April. Mashonaland play Midlands at home, while Manicaland travel to Bulawayo to play Matabeleland.Last year Midlands would have won the Logan Cup had not an over-generous declaration by Mashonaland A handed the senior Mashonaland side victory almost on a plate, an event that still rankles in Kwekwe. However, in their match against Mashonaland they were heavily defeated by 248 runs at Harare Sports Club. Craig Evans scored 163 and the all-round strength of the champions, even without their Test players, was too great for Midlands.Midlands have in fact lost all three of their matches against Mashonaland of first-class status heavily, with last year’s actually being the smallest margin of defeat. Their ultimate humiliation came in the first encounter on a rogue pitch at Harare Sports Club in 1999/2000, when Gus Mackay took an astounding 11 wickets for just 35 runs and they were bowled out for 31 and 56. The strip at headquarters is now much more in favour of the batsman, so such an event is unlikely to recur, but perhaps it is realistic to say that, barring unusual happenings, the best Midlands can hope for is a draw, or at least a smaller margin of defeat than before.Key players for Midlands are all-rounder Doug Marillier and left-arm spinner Raymond Price, who will hope the pitch will give him the same help as it gave spinners in the Mashonaland-Matabeleland match. Campbell Macmillan will also be looking to impress the selectors after his fin all-round performance against Manicaland. But the loss of captain Dirk Viljoen and all-rounder Travis Friend through injury is yet another example of how Lady Luck seems to have a special hatred for the underdog. No doubt they will also lose the toss . . .Mashonaland for their part have dropped Stuart Carlisle, out of form, which makes it unlikely that he will be selected against Pakistan, and surely not as captain in place of the injured Heath Streak. He is replaced by Darlington Matambanadzo, who has been in fine form for the Mashonaland B side and has thoroughly earned his promotion. With the Flower brothers and Craig Evans in the middle order, Mashonaland have a batting line-up that overawes the opposition. In the past two seasons, though, they have frequently begun a match feebly, perhaps through complacency, only to recover in the second innings. It could recur again, although this season they have got on top of the opposition right from the start and never relaxed. In Bulawayo the match should be much closer. Since Manicaland won first-class status in 1999/2000, the teams have met three times, with two draws and Manicaland winning the only match to produce a definite result, interestingly enough at a neutral venue in Harare in that first season. Last season rain in Mutare helped Matabeleland to avoid defeat after being forced to follow on. Neil Ferreira (210) and Paul Strang (154) put Manicaland in a dominant position, and both are playing again this year.Ferreira especially will be looking for a big score after struggling so far this season. Manicaland do not have a daunting bowling attack, but achieved their success against Midlands last weekend through the virtues of line and length. Pommie Mbangwa, hopefully fit again, can do the same for Matabeleland, who strengthen their pace attack by promoting Piet Rinke, recently of the CFX Academy, in place of spinner Keith Dabengwa, who is twelfth man. Rinke took 15 wickets with his seamers in his team’s defeat by Mashonaland B last weekend. With the bat Matabeleland still miss their star player Greg Strydom with an ankle injury and are over-reliant on their opening pair of Gavin Rennie and Mark Vermeulen. The middle order is talented but not yet likely to produce centuries. For the consistent Barney Rogers, very much in the eye of the selectors, there could be nothing better than a maiden first-class century this weekend. This match at least should be engrossing. The nominated teams are as follows:Mashonaland: Trevor Gripper, Dion Ebrahim, Darlington Matambanadzo, Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Craig Evans, +Tatenda Taibu, Andy Blignaut, *Brian Murphy, Gus Mackay, Alfred Mbwembwe.Midlands: Terry Duffin, Vusi Sibanda, *Doug Marillier, Craig Wishart, Sean Ervine, David Mutendera, +Alester Maregwede, Don Campbell, Raymond Price, Innocent Chinyoka, Campbell Macmillan.Matabeleland: Gavin Rennie, Mark Vermeulen, Charles Coventry, Barney Rogers, Andre Hoffman, Mluleki Nkala, Gavin Ewing, +Wisdom Siziba, Piet Rinke, *Pommie Mbangwa, Jordane Nicolle.Manicaland: +Neil Ferreira, Richie Sims, Alistair Campbell, Guy Whittall, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Guy Croxford, Blessing Mahwire, Paul Strang, Gary Brent, Kingsley Went, *Henry Olonga.B DIVISION TEAMSMatches:

Arbitragem rouba a cena, e clássico Flamengo x Vasco termina empatado
