Shikhar Dhawan is likely to miss at least the opening match for Sunrisers Hyderabad, as he recovers from his hand injury sustained while fielding during the recent Mohali Test against Australia. Dhawan fractured his left hand and was ruled out for six weeks, keeping him out of the fourth Test in Delhi. Sunrisers play their first game on April 5 against Pune Warriors.”Shikhar Dhawan at this stage will not be available for the first game. We are obviously working closely with the BCCI and the medical team with regard to his progress,” Sunrisers coach Tom Moody said before the team’s first official training session in Hyderabad.”We are hoping that within a couple of weeks he will be available to join the team.”Dhawan had made history in Mohali, his 187 being the fastest by a debutant in Tests. His knock opened India’s chances for pushing for a win in a high-scoring game, despite the opening day being washed out. He hurt his hand on the fourth day of the Test but wasn’t required to bat during the second innings.Dhawan was the leading run-scorer for Deccan Chargers – as it was previously known before the ownership changed – in the 2012 season, scoring 569 runs with five fifties. Former Bangladesh cricketer Shariful Haque has been banned for an indefinite period after spot-fixing allegations made against him before the Bangladesh Premier League by Mashrafe Mortaza were substantiated, BCB president said after a board meeting. Shariful’s activities around cricket will also be carefully monitored by the Board.”He [Shariful] will not be allowed to take part in any cricketing activities in the country in any capacity,” AHM Mustafa Kamal, the board chief, said. “The sub-committee investigated allegations about the cricketer who tried to influence the BPL. The indefinite ban will be applicable from today. This message will go to everybody. Nobody can make use of him. We will inform the ICC as well. We took the decision based on whatever we could substantiate on.”The recommendation for Shariful’s banning was made by a committee formed immediately after Mashrafe’s claims that he had been approached a day before the BPL kicked off. The committee, headed by BCB’s senior vice-president Mahbubul Anam, interviewed several individuals including Sharfiul and Mashrafe during and after the BPL and, according to sources in the BCB, had made this recommendation in July.The decision has made Shariful the first Bangladesh player to be banned for spot-fixing. He played one ODI for Bangladesh, against India, in 1998 and had unofficially retired from the game. He worked with Biman, the national airline, which Mashrafe represents in the Dhaka Premier League.Shariful has said that although he hasn’t received board’s communication, he will appeal to the BCB to change the decision. “I will definitely appeal against this ban, one hundred percent,” he told ESPNcricinfo immediately after the announcement was made. “I haven’t received any word on it from the cricket board, but I will defend myself and I will let everyone know about it.”In February, it was reported in some Dhaka newspapers that Mashrafe was asked to provide information on whether he would play certain matches and even whether he’d be wearing his sunglasses or cap. He was present with the team at the Manuka Oval, though. He played the football game that India play before their training sessions, and took part in light fielding drills too, but did not bowl.Ishant has been advised two-days’ rest by a specialist in Canberra, and is a sure non-starter for the tour game that begins on December 19. But the match is not a first-class fixture, which means he can be drafted in on for the second or third day if he recovers.Ishant bowled only 5.3 overs in India’s first tour game, walking off twice during that brief spell. The Indian camp said that day that Ishant was anyway going to bowl only six overs, and when the strapping on the ankle came loose with three deliveries left in the quota he felt no need to come back. Zaheer Khan and Rohit Sharma later said the injury wasn’t serious. It has now emerged that Ishant saw a specialist and has been prescribed strengthening exercises and rest.There is a possibility that the Indian team management might ask for a cover, just in case Ishant can’t make it for the Boxing Day Test. However, that decision is not expected until late on Sunday or Monday.Ishant had originally hurt the ankle in England. In Sri Lanka 2010, Zaheer was ruled out before the start, and Sreesanth was injured during training on the first day of the tour. Later that year, in South Africa, Zaheer missed the first Test. This year Zaheer got injured on the first day of Test cricket in England, and didn’t bowl further in the series. India lost all three first Tests. They managed to come back and level series in Sri Lanka and South Africa, but were whitewashed in England.
