The Oval is to overhaul their drainage and irrigation system over the next three months at a cost of £750,000.The project will aim to drain 30mm of rain per hour – a guideline set by the ECB – in order to ensure as much cricket is played as possible, and to avoid delays in play. The developments will bring The Oval in line with other grounds, such as Lord’s, whose drainage is among the quickest in the world.”We’re extremely conscious in providing world-class facilities here at The Oval for all spectators, cricketers and all other important stakeholders to enjoy,” said operations director, Clive Stephens.”Therefore this project is paramount in helping us achieve this. The work will ensure that the paying public’s opportunity to watch cricket is maximised, with rain delays being kept to an absolute minimum.”We’re also pleased to say that in addition to an already superb cricket wicket that is continually produced by Bill Gordon and his team, they’ll also get the added benefit of a flatter and greener looking outfield which will be easier to maintain thanks to our new state-of-the-art irrigation system.”The system is expected to be completed by Christmas.

Langer shines but weather wins

John Ward reports on the fourth day’s play between Somerset and Durham at Taunton

John Ward at Taunton12-Sep-2008
ScorecardIt was likely, though not inevitable, that this match between two strong championship contenders would end in a draw, after so much time was lost to the weather. Justin Langer provided the highlight of the final day with a masterly century that was both dynamic and sound, ensuring that his team’s large first-innings deficit did not result in defeat. The ideal scenario for Durham, beginning the day at 265 for 3, would have been to rattle up some quick runs, declare at about lunchtime and then bowl out Somerset cheaply a second time to win the match. Their first setback was the early loss of their opener, Michael Di Venuto, who has earned himself rather a reputation for being run out this season.Once again, he tried in vain to beat an accurate throw from deep midwicket while attempting a second run by his partner, and departed after adding just four to his overnight 131. The accurate fielder, Michael Munday, at last seems to have found his raison d’etre in the Somerset side, after having his leg-spin bowling virtually ignored on the second day.Somerset briefly looked like fighting back, despite some blatant time-wasting in the field, as Ben Harmison and Phil Mustard both fell cheaply, the latter to a superb leaping catch at extra cover by Justin Langer. Despite this their bowling did not look particularly impressive and did not fool the New Zealander, Paul Wiseman, who went for his shots from the start, including a big six into the building site beyond square leg off Ian Blackwell, whose bowling was disappointing.Wiseman reached his fifty off 63 balls on the stroke of lunch, closely following Dale Benkenstein (96 balls), who had been one of the overnight batsmen but seemed content to bat in a supervisory category while his partners attacked. At lunch Durham were on 377, 153 ahead, having raised their scoring rate to more than three an over. Wiseman on 52 scooped up a return catch off a leading edge to give the long-suffering Munday a wicket, and when Callum Thorp smacked a four and a six to take the total to 400, Benkenstein declared, his own score being 62. Alfie Thomas had three wickets and Charl Willoughby, less impressive today, two.Langer was not prepared to consider any possibility of defeat. After a scratchy first innings, he looked transformed to his great days as he clattered 14 runs off a rather wayward first over from Steve Harmison. Marcus Trescothick, off the field for a while earlier in the day with a migraine, rather limply followed a ball from Harmison that moved away and edged a catch to the keeper for 6, but James Hildreth, coming in at No. 3, settled in well after a slow start. Harmison took his sweater after Langer got stuck into him again, driving him for four off-side boundaries in an over and reaching his fifty off 45 balls, with 10 fours.Tea was taken at 111 for 1, a score that would not have been relished by the former umpire David Shepherd. After the break there was a brief presentation to a current umpire Graham Burgess, a Somerset allrounder from 1966 to 1979, who is umpiring his final match on his old home ground, being forced at the age of 65 to lay down his finger.A draw was almost inevitable, but Shivnarine Chanderpaul provided some entertainment with his leg-spin bowling: he turned the ball far more than any bowler in the match, but without the same precision as he displays in his batting. But it was all incidental: Hildreth mishooked and departed for 44, Langer on 95 reached 1000 runs for the season, and, eventually, his third century of 2008 (101 balls, 18 fours). He finished with 109 and so ended another crucial match, ruined by the weather.

West Ham confident of signing Milenkovic

According to a report by TUTTOmercatoWEB, both the Hammers and Fiorentina are ‘confident’ the transfer of defender Nikola Milenkovic to West Ham United will be done – with only the ‘last details’ still to be polished.

The Lowdown: West Ham in Milenkovic talks…

GSB have been in talks to complete a deal for the Serbian powerhouse over this last week, with a report from the Daily Mail last week detailing him as West Ham’s top central defensive target.

Manager David Moyes is said to be prioritising the signing of a new centre-back above every other position before the transfer window  closes on August 31.

As of now, the Irons have just Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson as first team senior options following Fabian Balbuena’s departure and their inclusion in the Europa League means they simply must add depth to that position.

The Latest: West Ham confident they will sign Milenkovic…

Bringing an update from Italy, TMW provide a very encouraging bit of news for West Ham supporters who wish to see their side finally make a second major summer signing after Alphonse Areola.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-gossip/” title=”West Ham latest gossip…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They say that West Ham, as well as Fiorentina, are ‘confident’ the transfer of Milenkovic to the English capital will be completed for a fee of around €16 million (£13.5m) plus bonuses.

Milenkovic apparently awaits the green light to travel to West Ham and talks between the two clubs ‘continue unabated’ to ‘polish the last details’.

The only remaining hurdle is allegedly agent’s commissions that Milenkovic’s representatives will have to receive before the move can be done.

The Verdict: Boost for Moyes?

This claim from Italy potentially comes as one of real promise as Moyes aims to bring in at least one new centre-half through the door before the start of 2021/2022.

Possibly signing Milenkovic for just £13.5m plus add-ons will be a great bit of business if West Ham can get this one done and indeed polish off the last details.

Lauded as an ‘extraordinary’ player by Spanish defender Pol Lirola (SOSFantacalcio via XSport.news), the 23-year-old still has plenty of years ahead of him and possesses the physicality to succeed in England – standing at a huge 6 foot 4.

Amid the waiting game, Hammers supporters will be eager to see this one go through as soon as possible.

MCFC fans unhappy with Delap news

Manchester City fans are far from happy after it was revealed Liam Delap is closing in on a loan move to Stoke City.

The Citizens are preparing for the new campaign as they look to back-up their Premier League title from last season with more silverware. However, at the moment, Pep Guardiola has just two strikers at his disposal, which explains their strong pursuit of England captain Harry Kane (The Telegraph).

One of those two forwards is Liam Delap. As per The Secret Scout (via si.com), Delap has visited Stoke’s training ground and is close to the Potters despite the lack of depth at the Etihad Stadium.

Last term, Delap scored 24 goals in 29 games for City’s youth side, while he also netted in the League Cup for the senior side (Transfermarkt).

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Delap news below

“Bad move, Brighton would have been better.”

“Shame. Would have liked him to play a part this season.”

“Worst deal ever”

“No, we dont even have a striker rn!!! How do we let our only striker out on loan?”

“It’s stupid to spend that amount on Kane who is prone to multiple injuries in a season while we can try a kid who is excellent at scoring. At least if he Delap fails we loose nothing but no Aguero 2.0 loading for a sum of money that can buy a club”

“It ruined John Guidettis career. I worry it will do the same”

Celtic eyeing Boupendza

An update has emerged regarding Celtic’s pursuit of Gabonese forward Aaron Boupendza…

What’s the talk?

According to Media Time, as relayed by TBRF, the Hoops are prioritising the signing of Hatayspor striker Boupendza as they attempt to bolster their strikeforce and provide some competition to Odsonne Edouard this summer.

The report claims that the Turkish club value him at around €12m (£10.2m) and it remains to be seen whether or not Celtic are willing to splash their club-record transfer fee on him.

Fans will be over the moon

Celtic fans will be over the moon with this news as Boupendza could be a terrific signing for the club and increase their chances of winning the title back from their arch-rivals Rangers next term. He has been prolific in Turkey and is capable of playing in a variety of positions at the top end of the pitch, whether that be down the middle or on either flank.

He has been nicknamed the “panther” in Turkey for the way he poaches goals, whilst he has also been compared to Kylian Mbappe and Alexandre Lacazette.

In a player analysis article centred around Boupendza, Breaking the Lines provided the following on what he brings to the pitch. “The Hatay forward has excellent close control and touch, he often comes short to utilize these skills, soaking in defenders, then with a dynamic touch or spin beating his man or passing it to a teammate, defeating the trap.

“His close control was best exemplified in his goal against Beşiktaş, where his control and tricky first touch gave him enough space to bury the ball into the bottom right corner from just inside the box.”

The 24-year-old number nine plundered 22 goals in 25 starts in the Super Lig last season, showing that he can score at an impressive rate at a good standard of football. This suggests that he could arrive at Celtic Park and set the Premiership on fire with his goals.

Therefore, supporters will be buzzing if the club can bring him in before the end of the window. He is young, talented, exciting and could be exactly what Postecoglou needs to bolster his attack and fight for the title next season.

If the Gabonese forward can translate his goals from Turkey over to Scotland then they could have a real talent on their hands, someone capable of lifting them back to dominance.

AND in other news, Postecoglou may be on the verge of his first Celtic howler, fans would be furious…

Australian Academy side too strong for Kiwis

Australia’s Academy side proved too strong for their New Zealand counterparts in a one-day game in Townsville yesterday

Lynn McConnell13-Aug-2002Australia’s Academy side proved too strong for their New Zealand counterparts in a one-day game in Townsville yesterday.Australia batted first and while losing Chris Simpson to the third ball of the innings, a 142-run second-wicket partnership in 22 overs allowed a quick recovery for the home team.Craig Simmons (74 off 70 balls) and Darren Wotherspoon (49 off 73) thrived in the conditions and while the New Zealand bowling tightened in the latter stages of the innings it still wasn’t enough to prevent Australia reaching 273 when all out with two balls remaining.Useful back-up was provided by Liam Buchanan (36) and George Bailey (26) and No 9 batsman David Dawson (25 not out). While he went wicketless, Kyle Mills celebrated his recall to the TelstraClear Black Caps side with his 10 overs costing 41 runs. Jeetan Patel’s off-spinners also proved useful as he took one for 31 from seven overs.New Zealand struggled from the outset and had lost Shanan Stewart, Jamie How and Jesse Ryder by the time 20 runs had been scored.Rob Nicol was undeterred and he scored 73 not out off 66 balls but was unable to find consistent support from his middle-order team-mates and New Zealand were all out after only 32.4 overs for 193.The situation would have been much worse if Patel hadn’t helped Nicol add 72 runs for the last wicket. Patel scored 41 runs off 22 balls and hit one four and five sixes. Jarrad Burke took five wickets for Australia but at a severe cost of 63 runs from his 8.4 overs.
