One worrying trend shows Celtic should steer clear of Villas-Boas

[ad_pod ]

Andre Villas-Boas is the latest name to make the rounds as Celtic continue their hunt for a permanent manager, but is he the right man for the job?

What’s the word?

Celtic have been rather tenuously linked with a move for Villas-Boas, and fans on Twitter were freaking out about the possibility of landing the 41 year-old on Tuesday.

SkyBet have slashed odds on the former Chelsea and Spurs boss moving to Paradise all the way down to 3/1, and some of the manager’s scouting notes on Celtic from 2003 have caused quite the stir as well.

Even The Daily Record are now talking about the rumours, but should the Bhoys actually swoop for Villas-Boas?

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

A monumental risk

On the surface, Villas-Boas looks like a prime candidate to take over from Neil Lennon.

The Portuguese boss is perhaps one of the game’s most underrated tacticians, played some lovely football during his time at Tottenham and Porto, and has multiple league titles and a Europa League winners medal to his name. He is also only 41 so would have plenty of time to learn and grow with Celtic.

However, the Hoops are in need of a bit of a mini-rebuild in the near future, with several defenders now past their peak and a squad in desperate need of trimming and reshaping.

This takes time – only now is Jurgen Klopp seeing the effects of his work at Liverpool after nearly four years at the helm for example – and Villas-Boas simply does not spend long amounts of time at one club.

Despite managing six clubs in his career, he has never spent more than two years at any of them, and spent a year or less at four of those clubs, only eclipsing 12 months with Spurs and Zenit Saint Petersburg.

Villas-Boas is charismatic and exciting, but he is not a long-term option for Celtic, and hiring him could lead to far more disarray when he inevitably leaves within two years. Quite simply, swooping for a manager who so consistently struggles to leave a lasting impact would be a monumental risk from the Hoops.

Newcastle target Samaris set to leave Benfica this summer

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United will attempt to sign Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris again in the summer after they failed with a move in the January transfer window, per Record via Sport Witness.

Samaris’ contract expires at the end of the season and Rafael Benitez’s side could well get themselves a bargain in the summer transfer window.

What’s the word?

Samaris was a target of the Magpies in January but a proposed deal, that would have seen him sign an initial short-term contract before committing to longer terms in the summer, fell through.

The report claims that the 29-year-old was unsure if he would actually have a club beyond the end of the season so decided to reject the proposal.

Newcastle signed Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United and Antonio Barreca on loan from AS Monaco last month.

And Samaris – who has played just six games in the Portuguese top-flight all season – can now begin negotiations with foreign clubs, with his deal soon due to end.

Newcastle, then, have the opportunity to finally get the signing over the line, with Record claiming that he will almost certainly be allowed to leave Benfica.

Patience pays off

Benitez and owner Mike Ashley may have played something of a blinder here.

Fresh from bolstering their squad at the turn of the year, the opportunity arises to do a deal for a long-term target that will ultimately cost them nothing at all.

Of course, it cannot be known if this was the plan all along – hence the convoluted offer presented to Samaris – but bringing him in when the summer window opens makes all the sense in the world.

Newcastle may well have to secure their Premier League survival first – they are currently 16th, just one point above the relegation zone.

But if they do just that, it would be a surprise if Samaris did not end up wearing black and white from the 2019-20 season.

Leeds should sell Roofe and renew interest in Bounedjah

Leeds United managed to secure a vital three points earlier on today at Elland Road, which helped keep the pressure on the likes of Sheffield United and Norwich City.

The Whites are certainly heading in the right direction at this moment in time but they must ensure consistency from here on in, with dropped points possibly damaging their automatic promotion chances.

One thing that has been a worry for some supporters in recent times is Kemar Roofe’s future, as according to The Chronicle, Newcastle United are continuously monitoring the Englishman.

Indeed, it would make perfect sense for Leeds to pack the forward’s bags and send him on his way to St James’ Park if they come calling in the summer transfer window, as he just hasn’t been able to ensure consistency in front of goal in recent times and he could attract quite a hefty fee, which could be used to strengthen in many areas.

Interestingly, the Whites should look to renew their interest in Algerian international Baghdad Bounedjah, who was reportedly (as per Le Buteur) on Leeds’ radar back in the summer transfer window.

Bounedjah is a forward who plays his football for Al-Sadd and it’s safe to say that he’s been simply sensational in the current campaign, having produced an incredible 31 goals in just 17 games in the Qatar Stars League. And, he has been impressive on the international stage with Algeria as he’s scored eight goals in 20 appearances.

He is a tall and physical forward who is aerially dominant and bullies defenders in the opposition’s box. Bounedjah is as well-rounded as strikers get with the ability to pick the final pass and an incredible eye for goal, so he would bring a different dimension to Leeds United’s play in the final third.

What do you think Leeds United fans?

Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson slammed by journalist

Tony Scott of The Liverpool Echo has provided a damning verdict on Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The 74-cap Iceland international made his 21st Premier League start of the campaign against Arsenal on Sunday, but was quiet on a day where the Toffees sunk to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of their former hero, Mikel Arteta.

He failed to have a shot on target, nor did he register a dribble, while he also committed four fouls – he also had one unsuccessful touch.

It means that Sigurdsson still has just one goal and two assists to his name in England’s top-flight this term, which is nowhere near good enough for a player who cost £45m and operates in the No.10 role on a weekly basis.

As a result, Scott has delivered a hard-hitting verdict on the former Swansea and Tottenham man.

Between the Lines: Winks reveals Tottenham’s strength in title race

[ad_pod ]

Harry Winks insists Tottenham Hotspur have shown they cannot be written off this season.

The club remain in the Premier League title race, five points behind both Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the league, and face Leicester City on Sunday.

What’s the word?

Spurs have won their last three Premier League games, against Newcastle United, Watford and Fulham.

Each game has seen a late winner scored – Son Heung-Min netted the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute against the Magpies, Fernando Llorente headed home in the 87th minute to give Spurs a 2-1 victory over the Hornets and Winks himself scored in injury time to complete a 2-1 win at Craven Cottage.

And the England international believes the squad’s mentality is such that they can never be counted out.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “We can never be written off, that’s the most important thing.

“We’ve scored a lot of late goals and it shows how much we persevere in a match and that the manager’s instilled a never-say-die attitude in the lads, and we know the game doesn’t finish until the final whistle.

“If we continue to press the team and try to get the opposition on the back foot until the final minute, we know we’re more than capable of scoring. We’ve done that this season.”

Asked about the prospect of overhauling both City and Liverpool, Winks added:  “We’re more than capable of challenging. We’ve had some great results against big sides this year, but it’s a long way. There’s a lot of matches to go this season, and the table’s fluctuating all the time.

“One minute we’re top, then we’re third battling for fourth. If we keep winning our matches there’s no reason why we can’t, but all we can really do is focus on the next game ahead of us and winning all our matches. We’ll see where that gets us.”

Mentality is key

Winks has exactly the right attitude for a title fight.

Spurs have not known when they are beaten in recent weeks, and have won their last three games without the goalscoring talents of captain Harry Kane.

Dele Alli has also been injured for the last two league encounters but the resilience shown by Pochettino’s men has proved that they are not about to concede the title just yet.

Of course, a win over Leicester is vital if they are to stay in the race – they may have to win every game between now and the end of the season if they are to be champions – but Winks has embodied the desire that all fans want to see from their players.

Spurs may not win the title, but they are certainly going to go down fighting if they don’t.

Manchester United stars cut relaxed figures ahead of second Ronaldo showdown

No pressure, then, for Jose Mourinho’s side that could find themselves in the Europa League relegation spot if results in the group go against them.

The weekend’s victory over high-flying AFC Bournemouth was not that convincing either with the hosts taking an early lead.

✈️ Turin #LDCA post shared by Anthony Martial (@martial_9) on Nov 6, 2018 at 6:47am PST

On the club-sponsored Aeroflot flight, Ashley Young and Nemanja Matic posed for a selfie together while Anthony Martial and his World Cup winning countryman Paul Pogba shared a snap of the pair cosying up.

The United club Twitter account joined in on the action, too, with a group shot of the squad, joined by youngsters Scott McTominay and Andreas Periera.

Ashley must realise fan hatred and bring these 2 EFL stars to Newcastle in January

Newcastle United supporters are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of transfer business being done at St James’ Park.

Rafa Benitez worked miracles on Tyneside last season, delivering a top-half finish for the Magpies. The Spanish boss likely hoped his performance would have been repaid by better financial backing from Ashley.

Benitez had to work on a rather shoe-string budget in summer, and did well to utilise the loan and free transfer markets to bring Premier League quality talent to the North-East club.

Ashley should re-pay the good performance of his manager, and let him sign these two EFL stars in January…

Kemar Roofe

Kemar Roofe is valued at £3.15m by Transfermarkt.

He has had an excellent start to this season so far with Leeds, scoring away at Derby County for the Whites to cap off his excellent performance against Frank Lampard’s side.

After six months of working with Marcelo Bielsa, he will have turned the ex-Oxford United man into an even better forward.

The 25-year-old deserves his chance at Premier League football. Given his importance to Leeds United, Mike Ashley might have to dig deep into his pockets to bring Roofe to St James’ Park.

An expert at cutting inside from wide positions, and releasing a fierce shot, Roofe would add a new element to the Magpies attack. Alongside a physical player such as Salomon Rondon, Roofe could really shine.

Chris Mepham

Chris Mepham might just be Jamaal Lascelles perfect partner at centre-back.

The 20-year-old is valued at £3.15m by Transfermarkt. He is very highly rated by the West London outfit.

He is so highly rated Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth made a £10m offer for the Welshman, which Brentford rejected.

Mepham is a perfect modern-day defender, rarely drawn to ground, possessing a great positional sense and being a good ball-player.

Ashley should break the bank to bring the player to Newcastle.
