Bollinger aims for final flourish

Andrew McGlashan28-Jun-2010Doug Bollinger has admitted that it would be “devastating” to concede a one-day series whitewash to England, but is confident Australia can regain some pride in the final two matches after their late surge at Old Trafford nearly pulled off a stunning comeback.England lost six for 18 in 38 balls as a comfortable chase turned into a nerve-jangling conclusion before Tim Bresnan edged James Hopes to seal victory and give the hosts an unassailable lead in the series.
Bollinger had been a major factor in the late jitters as he removed Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad in his last over with reverse swing, while the recalled Shaun Tait and legspinner Steven Smith also made England sweat. However, for a large part of the match Australia had been a distant second best once the opening stand of 75 between Shane Watson and Tim Paine was broken, leaving the visitors in the almost unknown position of having to save face at The Oval and Lord’s this week.”We’d love to stop them, 5-0 would be devastating,” said Bollinger.
“But we’ve just got to go out there and do everything properly and hopefully win the next two; 3-2 would still be disappointing but it would be two good wins.”It isn’t the start we wanted being 3-0 down but there isn’t much we can do. Everyone went out and played their guts off and sometimes it just doesn’t work out. We can’t whinge about it, we just have to try and finish well in these two one-dayers before the T20s and Tests against Pakistan.”Bollinger, though, conceded that England have made huge strides with their one-day game since the 6-1 thrashing by Australia last year and will be a tough side to compete with after the confidence gained from recent limited-overs success.”They’ve come on massively, especially with winning the Twenty20 they are sky high at the moment,” he said. “Everyone in their team has got their game together. We have to lift 10-15 percent and we are capable of doing that. Nobody likes a winning team unless it’s your own but we’ll be alright.”Despite Australia’s problems in the series, Bollinger has continued his impressive form of the last nine months which as seen him become the team’s premier strike bowler. The partnership with Tait, who was limited to two-over spells by Ricky Ponting in his first ODI since February 2009, certainly gave the attack an added dimension after it had looked pedestrian in the opening two encounters.”It was good to drag them back a bit in those last 10 overs and that means everything is starting to come together,” said Bollinger.
“Hopefully we can build on that. We’ve been very successful in the last few years and a couple of losses probably isn’t that bad even though nobody likes to lose.”

Nunez is back in the goals! Liverpool winners, losers and ratings as Thiago delivers masterclass in Dubai

Mohamed Salah was among those on target as Jurgen Klopp's side finished their Dubai Super Cup campaign with a 4-1 win over AC Milan

Darwin Nunez made a goalscoring return to action as Liverpool finished their Dubai Super Cup campaign with a 4-1 win over AC Milan.

The Uruguay international netted twice after replacing Roberto Firmino for the final half hour at the Al-Maktoum Stadium, on a night when both Mohamed Salah and Thiago Alcantara were also on target.

Salah gave the Reds a fifth-minute lead, finishing off after fine work from Joel Matip, but Alexis Saelemaekers' low strike drew the Serie A champions level.

Thiago restored Liverpool's advantage before half-time, arrowing a fine effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards, and Jurgen Klopp's side continued to dominate despite a raft of second-half changes.

One of them was Nunez, and he wrapped up the game in the final eight minutes, first converting coolly after a brilliant pass from fellow sub Bobby Clark, and then finishing from close range after good play from another teenage starlet, Ben Doak.

The game won, Liverpool then missed the chance to add a bonus point to their tally as they were beaten 4-3 in a penalty shootout, with Kostas Tsimikas and Naby Keita both denied from the spot.

Here, GOAL runs through the winners and losers from the Reds' final warm-up game before the season resumes…

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Thiago Alcantara:

In full flow, there are few footballers more pleasing on the eye than Thiago, and the Spaniard gave something of a masterclass here, displaying his full array of talent in front of a drooling audience.

The game was less than four minutes old when he picked up possession in his own half, flicked the ball up and speared a volleyed pass out to Andy Robertson. Soon after, he was spraying it to James Milner on the opposite flank. Fifty yards, pinpoint.

Just before half time, he was on the scoresheet, controlling the ball 25 yards out and firing an unstoppable low half-volley into the far corner. Technique personified, that one.

Stefan Bajcetic:

Liverpool's midfield may be in need of an overhaul, but this lad certainly looks like he's ready to be part of its future.

At 18, Bajcetic has already begun to establish himself as part of Jurgen Klopp's first-team squad, and his showing here suggests there will be plenty more to come.

Pep Lijnders believes the Spanish U19 international has "all the attributes needed" to be a top-class No.6 for the Reds, and it is noticeable just how comfortable the former Celta Vigo prospect looks in a position which demands a lot in terms of concentration, maturity and discipline.

Bajcetic's positional play, his anticipation and ability to hoover up second balls, is already at a very high level, and he plays with a confidence, composure and awareness which is way beyond his tender years.

His physicality will improve, and will need to, as he gets older, and he must still overcome big hurdles if he is to become a permanent fixture in a side which will hope to be challenging for the biggest prizes in the coming years.

But so far, so very promising.

Darwin Nunez:

Welcome back, Darwin! After disappointment in Qatar came a promising return to action in Dubai, as Nunez wasted no time at all in picking up where he left off for Liverpool prior to the World Cup.

The Uruguay international needed only half an hour to make his mark here, scoring twice to put the seal on a good victory for his side, and offering good omens for his manager ahead of the big restart.

Nunez had already stung the palms of Antonio Mirante, the veteran Milan goalkeeper, by the time he found himself on the end of a quite wonderful pass from youngster Bobby Clark. He stayed calm, slotting home low inside the near post to make it 3-1.

Then came a simple second, converted from close range after a driving run and selfless cross from Ben Doak, a 17-year-old whose early first-team forays suggest will have a big future in the game.

Nunez capped his promising cameo by scoring, somehow, from the spot in the penalty shootout, and with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota both sidelined until well into the New Year, Liverpool need their £64m man to keep up this kind of form.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Andy Robertson:

Milan's equaliser is not a goal Robertson will want to see again.

Having initially been unlucky to be caught just underneath the crossfield pass from left to right, the Scotland captain simply had to do more, one-v-one against Alexis Saelemaekers.

Instead, he allowed the Belgian international, who narrowly missed out on a place at the World Cup, to work his way into the box, where he was able to fire a low, left-footed strike past Caoimhin Kelleher into the corner.

Robertson had his hands up apologising soon after, as a wayward pass led to another Milan chance, and he will know he can play far better generally than he did here.

Mind you, best to get them out the way before the real stuff starts back up.

Joe Gomez:

We already know who the centre-backs will be when Liverpool take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup next week.

With Virgil van Dijk not due back until Monday, and with Ibrahima Konate currently preparing for the World Cup final, it will be Gomez and Joel Matip, surely, who line up at the Etihad.

Klopp, then, will have wanted to see them look assured against strong opposition here, but while Matip looked the part, defending sharply and setting up the opening goal for Mohamed Salah, Gomez's afternoon was a little more concerning.

Where was he going, 90 seconds in, when Liverpool's defence was cut open by the most straightforward of passes through the middle of the field? Marko Lazetic let him off the hook with a poor finish, but Erling Haaland won't be quite so generous, one suspects.

Gomez has not had a great season so far – although he saved his best performance for City's visit to Anfield in October – and you'd have to say he's fourth-choice at present, with Van Dijk, Konate and Matip all offering greater stability and consistency.

Curtis Jones:

Liverpool's home-grown midfielder was nowhere to be seen here, as his season of frustration continues.

Jones has managed only six appearances, and only two starts, since being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his tibia following the Community Shield in July, and though he was part of the 33-man squad which travelled to Dubai, he has not been able to train fully and therefore played no part in either of the Reds' fixtures.

Sources have told GOAL that the club are simply being cautious with the 21-year-old – "managing his load," as one put it – but with midfield options already thin on the ground, and games coming thick and fast once the season restarts next week, Jones once more finds himself playing catch-up.

Getty ImagesLiverpool Ratings: Defence

Caoimhin Kelleher (6/10):

Helpless with the goal. Otherwise untroubled. Distribution was good.

James Milner (7/10):

Showed all his class and experience at full-back, where he defended with poise and attacked with regularity.

Joel Matip (7/10):

Marauding Matip is back! Great burst forward to create the opening goal for Salah. Defended well on the front foot.

Joe Gomez (5/10):

Still doesn't look entirely comfortable. Caught out by a straight pass inside two minutes, and his distribution was scratchy.

Andy Robertson (5/10):

Caught out for the Milan equaliser and delivered a few loose passes. Can play better.

Stefan Bajcetic (7/10):

Positionally good, won lots of second balls and played with composure and confidence. A proper talent.

Thiago Alcantara (8/10):

A joy to watch at times with his passing and technique. Beautiful goal to make it 2-1.

Harvey Elliott (7/10):

Always bright, and rarely wasteful. Liverpool's best stuff came when he got involved.

Rampaul signing cheers Surrey after Dernbach blow

Surrey have strengthened their bowling attack ahead of the new season by signing the West Indian pace bowler Ravi Rampaul on a two-year deal.Rampaul, 31, who has played 18 Tests, 92 ODIs and 23 T20Is, will ease Surrey’s worries about the strength of their pace resources on their return to Division One after an injury to Jade Dernbach exposed a squad that has lost Chris Tremlett and Tim Linley from last season.Surrey have, though, pulled off one of the most high-profile signings of the clsoe season by tempting Mark Footitt, the leading wicket-taker in Division Two last season, from Derbyshire.Surrey have benefited from London weighting this season on the ECB salary cap and have used this to pull off a series of overseas raids.Rampaul is Surrey’s third overseas signing this month after the securing of the South African pacemen Conor McKerr and Mathew Pillans, by virtue of British ancestry, stoked fears in South Africa about a drain of talent into county cricket. Rampaul will qualify to represent Surrey as a Kolpak player.Surrey’s director of cricket Alec Stewart said: “Ravi will add experience to our seam bowling attack and we look forward to him joining the squad.”Surrey also confirmed that Dernbach is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a back problem. A statement on the club’s website read: “Following a scan on his injured back earlier this week, Jade Dernbach is due to have more diagnostic testing in six weeks time. It is then hoped that he will return to cricket specific rehabilitation.”

Unblemished records in the balance

ScorecardChris Rushworth’s five wickets set up a tight finish at Chester-le-Street•Getty Images

The rain which had been threatening to disrupt play throughout the first two days eventually came on day three, but not before Durham, led by Chris Rushworth’s five-wicket haul, bowled out Sussex for 265 to set up an intriguing day four at Chester-le-Street.After record partnerships from tail enders on the first two days, there was a hint of normalcy in the proceedings on a day in which bowlers took wickets and batsmen scored runs.Sussex dominated the first session of play and looked on course for a big total. But a couple of quick wickets before lunch, followed by a post-lunch batting collapse meant that they managed to set a target of just 262.A positive start by Durham’s openers has left them with just 147 to get on the final day to record their second successive win of the season.Rushworth, who picked up his 10th five-wicket haul for Durham said it has been a “remarkable game”. On how the pitch is behaving, he said: “The odd one is doing a bit, keeping low, bouncing a little bit sidewards so there’s plenty there for the bowlers. But I think in general it is a pretty good pitch.”Earlier in the day, it looked as though it wasn’t going to be Durham’s day as the Sussex batsmen either kept playing and missing it by a whisker or edging it past or just short of the slip cordon. Durham have learned not to despair. “We always feel in the game here,” Rusworth said. “We know as a bowling unit that if you hang around there and be patient, rewards will either come at the other end or later on in the day.”Despite riding his luck early on with a couple of lbw shouts and edges that didn’t quite carry, Matt Machan sparkled for Sussex on a pitch that wasn’t exactly easy to bat, securing his third half-century of the season. After frustrating Durham’s bowlers for large parts of the opening session, both Machan and Harry Finch fell to Usman Arshad and Ben Brown nicked one to Scott Borthwick to put the game nicely in the balance going into lunch. At 255-6 with Luke Wright still at the crease, the visitors would have been looking for another late-order flourish to make good Machan’s efforts. It was not forthcoming. The last four wickets fell for just 10 runs as Rushworth and John Hastings did what they couldn’t in the first innings, wrap up the tail quickly.Rushworth started the collapse by trapping Ajmal Shahzad lbw with the score at 255 for 6. Considering the amount of good shouts that were turned down by both umpires, that was a surprise as it looked as though the ball was heading down leg. In his next over, Rushworth sent the dangerous Luke Wright’s middle stump out for a walk with an delivery that moved off the pitch.Hastings who had hitherto bowled well without any reward picked wrapped up the tail with two wickets in two balls just nine overs after lunch.Chasing a modest 262, both of Durham’s openers started positively on a pitch that is still difficult for new batsmen. Unusually, it was Keaton Jennings who was the aggressor at the start. It was not until the 11th over, when he hit debutant Robinson for three fours that Mark Stoneman really got going. The last of the boundaries also brought up the pair’s second fifty partnership of the innings.Just when it looked as though Durham were cruising to the target, Shahzad removed both openers before tea. First Stoneman was trapped lbw two balls after hitting a massive six onto the top tier of the County Durham Stand. His opening partner followed four overs later, as Division One’s leading wicket taker got the ball to move back in and got the edge off Jennings’ bat into the keeper’s glove.Borthwick and Michael Richardson held fort after tea before the players left due to bad light, with play eventually being abandoned due to rain. With plenty of overs left to play, the weather and not the players will decide whether Division One still has a side that has won all of their games this season.

'Just wanted them to play dot balls' – Taijul

‘Need to hold on to this feeling’ – Mashrafe

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has said that the side needed these five ODI wins not just to help balance a lop-sided result sheet in 2014, but also to gain confidence ahead of the World Cup
“There is no substitute for a win,” Mashrafe said. “This year we had close matches and we couldn’t win those but that doesn’t mean that we played bad. We just couldn’t finish, so no matter who we played against, the fact that we managed to win is a good thing and we need to hold on to this feeling.”
He was, however, a little alarmed to see Bangladesh lose five wickets in a 129-run chase. Tinashe Panyangara and Tendai Chatara shared the wickets, bowling with an umbrella of slips and a leg-side trap.
“Our batting order had a collapse. This is a matter of concern,” Mashrafe said. “I said the individual player needs to work on that. Nobody expects five wickets to fall while chasing such a low score. So obviously I think we have to keep these things in mind for the future because we will face more difficult situations in the future.”

Bangladesh doesn’t know much about Taijul Islam except that he has hit the record books twice in the last six weeks. Given that he is a person of few words and a low decibel, the wait to know Taijul will continue. After his 4 for 11 against Zimbabwe in the fifth ODI, which included a hat-trick, he was asked if he also thinks of himself as a longer-version bowler. Taijul said he doesn’t. When asked if he knew he was the first bowler in ODI history to take a hat-trick on debut, he said yes. When quizzed about the competition among the spinners in the Bangladesh team, he said: “Competition is the name of the game. I always try to give my best.”Then there was the big question. What went through his mind as he prepared to bowl the second ball of the 29th over to Tendai Chatara?”I didn’t think of the hat-trick at the beginning,” Taijul said. “I just wanted them to play dot balls. It happened by Allah’s grace. Mushfiq bhai kept telling me to bowl at the stumps. That’s what I focused on.”Taijul hails from Narail, 196km northwest of Dhaka, and broke through the domestic ranks with a bagful of wickets in the 2013-14 season. He made it to the Test team in West Indies where he fought well with the ball, until he blew Zimbabwe away with a second-innings haul of 8 for 39 in the Mirpur Test. He finished the Test series with 17 wickets and was rested for the first four ODIs.Called up for the fifth game, he delivered with a tight first spell of 5-0-11-0, when Zimbabwe were going great guns. Hamilton Masakadza and Vusi Sibanda hardly attacked him though, and when he was brought back by captain Mashrafe Mortaza to bowl at the tail, he took it up gleefully and picked up a Man-of-the-Match winning performance. The hat-trick came against three tail-enders who were clueless about which way his simple, tossed-up left-arm spin was going to turn. He beat Tinashe Panyangara with a ball that drifted in through his bat and pad. John Nyumbu played back to a flatter, quicker ball. What Chatara was trying to do was unclear to many, and Taijul’s reaction when the ball hit the stumps said as much.He was thumping his chest as the fielders rushed towards him. He got a special hug from Abul Hasan. When Zimbabwe’s innings ended after 30 overs, he was asked to lead the Bangladesh team off the field. He looked sheepish, then someone put his cap on properly for the cameras and, at one point, he got hold of one of the match balls, too.Mashrafe Mortaza later said that Taijul’s performance had epitomised Bangladesh’s professional effort in the ODI series. He said that the hat-trick was unexpected but the left-arm spinner did his job.”Even if you play a gully cricket match, you can’t expect a perfect result,” Mashrafe said. “The boys performed very professionally. Taijul came for one match, the hat-trick might have been a matter of luck but he bowled well.”He bowled in one spot. He did what the team needed him to do. Every boy worked hard that’s why it was possible.”
