McSweeney's ton and McAndrew's strikes put pressure on leaders Tasmania

AAP and ESPNcricinfo staff11-Mar-2024Nathan McSweeney’s century helped South Australia stand up to ladder-leaders Tasmania as they push to end their Sheffield Shield season on a high at Blundstone Arena.McSweeney, who has previously been mentioned by national selector George Bailey, posted 117 from 174 balls, just one run shy of his highest first-class score, as the Redbacks were dismissed for 271 after being sent in on a very green pitch.Related

In reply, Tasmania were wobbling on 27 for 3 at stumps on day one after paceman Nathan McAndrew hit his stride to put his underdog team on top ahead of day two.McSweeney had little help from his team-mates in the batting order, with no other Redback passing 30 runs. The 25-year-old rode his luck after being dropped by Caleb Jewell on 15 in the over before lunch. When the South Australian innings spun into crisis, McSweeney made Tasmania pay.He was on 47 when No.10 Brendan Doggett came in, the Redbacks well and truly into the bowlers at 195 for 8. McSweeney and Doggett forged a 62-run partnership that pulled South Australia back from the brink, with Doggett pitching in only one of those runs.McSweeney brought up his fifth Shield century with two runs off Beau Webster in the 71st over, though he needed to dive to avoid being run out when the ball was thrown in from deep extra cover. McSweeney almost dragged on from the next ball, but forged on, adding two more boundaries to his 15 for the day.For Tasmania, opener Matthew Wade and Gabe Bell were unbeaten at the crease at stumps but their side appeared on the back foot following McAndrew’s early carnage.Fifth-placed South Australia are out of contention for the Sheffield Shield final but a win could deny Tasmania the chance to host the decider next week.

WA chase historic hat-trick while Tasmania look to break 11-year drought

Injury-ravaged WA hope to overcome the loss of Cameron Bancroft while a settled Tasmania side are buoyed by their recent results at the WACA

Inglis: Finding it easier now to move between formats

As Western Australia captain Sam Whiteman stepped up for the media conference on Wednesday ahead of the Sheffield Shield final, he undoubtedly knew the barrage of questions headed his way.A bombshell broke late on Tuesday that WA opener Cameron Bancroft was ruled out of the final against Tasmania after a bike accident left him concussed. It continued a season of adversity for WA, who are striving for their first hat-trick of titles since the late 1980s.Not even the iconic WA team of the 1990s, filled with a slew of players who ended up being Test greats, managed the feat. Only Victoria from 2015-17 have won three in a row during the past 20 years.Related

Wade to retire from first-class cricket after Sheffield Shield final

It’s obviously something rare and very difficult to achieve as WA can attest to in an injury-hit season. Frontline quicks Jhye Richardson, Lance Morris and Matt Kelly have only played five Shield matches between them and none of them will be available for the final.Having rejuvenated his red-ball career with a century in last season’s final, Ashton Turner has not been available since knee surgery in December.Cameron Green played only two matches, while Mitchell Marsh did not feature in domestic cricket at all this season given his heavy international workload across the formats.WA have often looked worn down and below their best – echoes of Perth Scorchers’ disappointing BBL season – but they found a way to overcome the obstacles and finished the season in peak form with a mishmash of players, unexpectedly clinching a home final with a victory over Victoria at the Junction Oval last week.Jordan Silk and Sam Whiteman pose with the Sheffield Shield trophy at King’s Park in Perth•Getty Images

“It’s been a challenge to get to this year’s final. Last year was pretty much in a straight line, but this year it’s been do or die the last three weeks,” Whiteman said on Wednesday. There’s a gag going around social media that a WA second XI might be the next-best team in the Shield. Of course, that can never be proven, but WA’s depth of talent and their fringe players stepping in seamlessly have them on the cusp of another title.”We’ve used 22 players this year, and I think every one of those players has done their role for the team,” Whiteman said. “You need to get a whole squad to win a Shield. I think that’s the strength of this group.”While WA broke a 23-year title drought in 2022, a triumph here would be the “most satisfying” for Whiteman, who is on the brink of becoming a three-time Shield-winning captain. WA would also become the first team to win a hat-trick of titles in the Shield and Marsh Cup concurrently.”If we get the job done this week, it’s something we can look back on and be really proud of, ” he said. “Leaves a really strong legacy for this group.”Before the media conference started at King’s Park, a popular place for tourists to take photos of Perth’s picturesque surroundings, the burly Shield trophy was already in position for the cameras. Those walking by barely gave it a second glance apart from a person purportedly the relative of a former Test player, who wandered by to take a photo of the trophy.Amid a cool morning breeze, a nod to the changing of seasons in Perth, it was a reminder that the final will be played in relative anonymity in the AFL-mad city. But in Tasmania interest in the match should be high as the Tigers look to end an 11-year drought. George Bailey and Ricky Ponting were their talismen the last time they lifted the trophy, but their star with the bat was Jordan Silk, who as a 20-year-old frustrated Queensland with 108 off 358 balls as Tasmania secured the draw needed at home to clinch their third title.James Faulkner, George Bailey and Ricky Ponting were playing the last time Tasmania won the Sheffield Shield•Getty Images

“I just reflected on it myself. It was really special,” said Silk, who is the only member of that XI playing in this final. “I was really only in the team for a couple of weeks and found myself winning.”So it certainly means a lot more if we win this week because of the journey that I’ve been on and also for a lot of our guys who have been around for quite a while.”With few international players in their squad, Tasmania have enjoyed continuity and were in the box seat of a home final until a final-round slip-up against South Australia at Bellerive Oval.It seemed a costly defeat, with Tasmania faced with the daunting task of the long journey to Perth and confronting WA, who have only lost three matches at the WACA since the start of 2021-22.But one of those defeats was to Tasmania, who also drew a high-scoring match earlier this season on an uncharacteristically flat WACA surface. The pitch in the final is expected to be bowler-friendly although perhaps not as spicy as seen at the WACA since that Tasmania match in October.”We’re really confident in our ability at the moment. I think we’ve strung together a really solid first-class season. The guys should take belief out of that,” Silk said. “We’ve beaten teams on the road this year, and we’ve got a good record in Perth, so we take a lot of confidence from that.”Tasmania will also have the added motivation of Matthew Wade’s red-ball retirement, while they might be able to ride the wave of a sports frenzy bubbling away in the island state. The JackJumpers, their basketball team, are in the NBL grand final while Tasmania’s first AFL team was launched earlier in the week.”It’s been a really good week for Tassie sports,” Silk said. “Hopefully we can add a little bit to that this week. That will be really special.”

Newcastle REJECT Liverpool's first official offer for Alexander Isak as Reds step up interest in want-away striker

Newcastle United have reportedly turned down Liverpool’s first official bid for star striker Alexander Isak, despite the 25-year-old expressing his desire to leave. The Sweden international has been training away from the Magpies’ pre-season tour, with talks between both clubs ongoing. Liverpool’s rejected bid reportedly valued the forward at around £120 million.

have reported that Newcastle have rejected a formal offer from Liverpool for Alexander Isak after initially fielding informal interest from the Reds. Despite attempts to offer the striker a new contract with a 2026 release clause, Isak remains firm on his desire to leave. Senior players have encouraged him to stay, but the Swede has been training alone in San Sebastian at his former club, Real Sociedad's training ground, while Newcastle tour Asia.

Liverpool view Isak as a long-term option in their attacking line and are prepared to return with an improved offer. Newcastle, while publicly stating the striker is not for sale, are already scouting replacements with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko on their radar. The Magpies remain keen to avoid selling a key asset unless an extraordinary bid arrives this summer.

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad for £60m in 2022 and has three years left on his current deal. Despite the Magpies citing a minor injury, reports have his absence from the pre-season tour of Asia is by personal choice amid the transfer saga. Liverpool’s interest was expected to go away after Hugo Ekitike joined from Eintracht Frankfurt; however, Arne Slot and Co. have continued to track the Swede.

Du Plessis on RCB's bowling: 'We don't have as many weapons'

After Mumbai Indians razed down Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s target of 197 with 27 balls to spare, losing captain Faf du Plessis admitted that his side was struggling because their bowling group does not have “as many weapons” as the other teams. As a result, du Plessis said, RCB’s batters need to be adept at scoring more runs to even “have a chance” while their bowling group needs to find new ways to be effective.”At the moment, it feels like, from a batting perspective we have to get and try and push for 220 to have a chance,” du Plessis said after RCB’s fifth defeat in six games. “From a bowling perspective, we don’t have as many weapons. So unfortunately it comes down to the batters to make sure that we use our form and our confidence. The scores that we put on the board are probably going to be the only way we are going to get into the competition.”On Thursday, all six RCB bowlers turned out expensive with Mumbai scoring at 12.84 per over. Even their most economical bowler Vijaykumar Vyshak bowled his three overs for 10.66 while Akash Deep was the most expensive at 15.71. RCB also conceded 72 runs for no wickets in the powerplay, which left them with no way back.Related

“From a bowling perspective, we have lacked a little bit of penetration [at the start] so we have to go out and find creative ways within our squad we can get a team two or three-down in the powerplay. Just so that you feel like your bowling innings can start on the front foot. It feels, for the last few games, that we are on the back foot after the first few overs.”Du Plessis also said that a combination of the evening dew and the explosive start provided by Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma in their 53-ball stand of 101 forced his bowlers to make errors. He also said that the surface was batting-friendly and Mumbai did better than RCB in using their batting resources.”You also have to give credit in the way that the boys from MI came out and played,” he said. “Put a lot of pressure on our bowlers. Made our bowlers make a lot of mistakes in the powerplay especially.”You could see that anyone who came in could find the middle of the bat quite easily. We did know that and spoke about it in the first innings. The dew here looked like it was going to be big so we felt we needed to get 215, maybe even 220. Obviously, 190 [196] or whatever we got wasn’t enough runs.””It [dew] is a big thing in some venues as we know. When the dew settles in, it is really tough. You could see the boys were bowling a few full tosses. We changed the ball a few times. It was really, really wet. But that’s just the game of cricket. It is probably the only sport where the conditions have such a big impact.”How does a team combat dew and the apparent lack of penetration among their bowlers? Du Plessis said that the onus fell on his batters to produce performances that make opponents feel the weight of a big target. He also said that the lack of top-order partnerships barring the 82-run stand between Rajat Patidar and himself was also a factor in their defeat.”Therefore in your first innings here, you make sure you get a score that builds scoreboard pressure,” he said. “I thought we did a good job. I thought we fought with the bat. We were never really in a position where we could really… you know, we lost crucial wickets at crucial stages.”Myself and Rajat got a nice partnership together and then you lose a wicket and then you rebuild and then you again lose a wicket. With them [Mumbai], they just had the fluency in their innings, their guys came in and played really positive at the end, which gave them the platform for the full crack.”RCB next play Sunrisers Hyderabad at home on April 15, where they will look to avoid five straight defeats. They are currently ninth with the second-poorest net run-rate of -1.124.

Rio Ngumoha is a bit special! Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong make their mark in Liverpool's friendly win in Yokohama but the Reds' 16-year-old sensation steals the show

Hugo Ekitike may have drawn a blank on his first appearance for Liverpool but fellow new signings Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong were both directly involved in goals before youngster Rio Ngumoha put the seal on a 3-1 victory over Yokohama F. Marinos in Wednesday's friendly in Japan.

Arne Slot named something close to his strongest line-up for the game at the Nissan Stadium, with Ekitike, Wirtz, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo forming an all-star attack.

However, while Liverpool crafted some good openings during the first half, they failed to take any – and also looked worryingly prone to counter-attacks, just as they had done in last weekend's friendly loss to AC Milan.

Consequently, it didn't come as that much of a surprise to see Yokohama take the lead early in the second half, when Asahi Uenaka finished smartly after being slipped in on goal by Ren Kato.

The goal sparked Liverpool into life, though, and Wirtz drew his new team level with a confident finish from 10 yards out after some excellent work from Curtis Jones in the build-up. The tourists then made it two goals in six minutes, when Trey Nyoni did well to get himself on the end of a fantastic Frimpong cross from the right-hand side of the area.

With Yokohama's brave resistance finally broken, Ngumoha ran riot in the closing stages and capped a scintillating cameo with a fine right-footed strike with just three minutes to go.

    THE MVP

Liverpool may have spent a fortune on exciting summer signings but Salah remains their star player, as he once again underlined against Yokohama. As well as being heavily involved in Wirtz's equaliser, the Egyptian created three clear-cut chances (for Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez) with three outstanding passes. It's fair to say, then, that Salah looks in pretty good shape to replicate his sensational stats from last season.

  • AFP

    NEW FACES

Wirtz linked well at times with Salah and Gakpo during the first half but was occasionally guilty of taking the wrong decision. However, the Germany international managed to get his first goal for Liverpool shortly before being replaced, after arriving right on cue to fire home a cutback from Salah that Jones unintentionally flicked right into his path.

Meanwhile, Wirtz's former Bayer Leverkusen team-mate, Frimpong, left Nyoni with a pretty straightforward finish thanks to a wonderful whipped cross.

As for Ekitike, he impressed with his work-rate and general movement but didn't get many clear sights of goal. However, he did go close with an ingenious back-heeled effort from an acute angle after reacting first to Conor Bradley's low cross.

In defence, Giorgio Mamardashvili once again started in goal due to the unavailability of Alisson, who returned to his native Brazil for personal reasons, and the Georgian impressed with his distribution, while he also made a good save from Dean David during the first half.

There was also a start for Milos Kerkez, who was caught out of position a few times but always provided a decent outlet down the left-hand side.

    ONES TO WATCH

Nyoni has been tipped to challenge for a starting spot in Slot's side sooner rather than later and the midfielder didn't take long to make his impact felt, scoring four minutes after his introduction.

He also combined brilliantly with Ngumoha, who was the undoubted star of the final quarter of the game. The 16-year-old absolutely tormented the Yokohama defence from the off, turning opponents inside-out with his sensational dribbling skills.

It, thus, felt fitting that Ngumoha had the final word on the night, rifling home from the edge of the box after being picking up possession in midfield.

ACB to Cricket Australia: Don't succumb to 'external pressures and political influences'

Statement from the Afghanistan board comes after Cricket Australia postponed a bilateral series for the third time

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has expressed its “disappointment” over Cricket Australia (CA) postponing yet another scheduled bilateral series between the two sides.”The ACB urges the Australian government not to impose its policies on cricket boards, and instead focus on supporting the development of cricket across regions”, the statement said. “ACB’s top management had previously engaged in negotiations with Cricket Australia, and proposed exploring alternative solutions instead of publicly announcing withdrawals.”The latest development came on Tuesday when, after consultations with the Australian government, CA announced that Australia wouldn’t be taking part in the three-match T20I series at a neutral venue because of “a marked deterioration in human rights for women and girls” in Afghanistan.Related

Cricket Australia confirms postponement of Afghanistan Test

This is the third time Australia have pulled out of bilateral engagements with Afghanistan, even though the series were inked into the ICC’s future tours programme.Australia’s reasons, like on previous occasions, had to do with human rights issues in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s takeover of the country’s government: they had earlier postponed the first Test between the teams in 2021 and an ODI series in 2023.The ACB statement mentioned that the now-postponed T20I series “was approved by the ICC in the presence of the CA delegation, who had agreed to the fixtures at the time”. In the strongly worded statement, the ACB urged “Cricket Australia to respect and understand its position as a Full Member nation, and look for alternative solutions rather than succumbing to external pressures and/or political influences”.The board reiterated its stance “on neutral and politics-free cricket across the globe”, and said it was even open to negotiations to ensure cricket remained “free from political influence”.
