Villani helps Hurricanes open their account in eight-over dash

Defending champions Adelaide Strikers struggled to find top gear with the bat

Tristan Lavalette27-Oct-2023Captain Elyse Villani powered Hobart Hurricanes to their first win of the WBBL season with an upset over defending champions Adelaide Strikers in a truncated match at a bleak Allan Border Field.Restricted to an eight overs per side contest, Villani bludgeoned an unbeaten 39 from 24 balls as Hurricanes chased down the target of 75 with an over to spare. It was an impressive bounce back from Hurricanes, who suffered two big losses against Perth Scorchers to start the season.Strikers were left to rue Danielle Gibson dropping Villani with a regulation chance at midwicket on the second ball of the innings. Villani made them pay instantly with a couple of boundaries off legspinner Anesu Mushangwe. It wasn’t long before opener Lizelle Lee found her range with a trio of sixes in the space of four deliveries. Her purple patch ended when Lee was bowled by offspinner Georgia Adams, but Villani was in command as Hurricanes inched closer. They lost Bryony Smith and Heather Graham, but consecutive boundaries off thick outside edges from Ruth Johnston got the Hurricanes over the line. There were fears of a washout with rain persistent throughout the day in Brisbane, but the match finally got underway almost two hours after schedule.Hurricanes elected to bowl in the gloomy conditions and were confronted by an aggressive Katie Mack, who was looking to bludgeon almost every delivery to the boundary. She succeeded in whacking offspinner Molly Strano for successive boundaries in the opening over, but it wasn’t easy with the ball coming off the wicket slowly and the outfield wet.Hurricanes started disastrously when legspinner Amy Smith dropped a return catch when opener Laura Wolvaardt was on six. After a slow start, tied down by Smith’s looping leg breaks, Wolvaardt smashed a six over deep midwicket to ignite Strikers. After struggling to hit boundaries square of the wicket, the openers sought an inventive approach with Wolvaardt clearing her leg to conjure several effective slogs as they plundered 26 runs across the fifth and sixth overs.Just when Strikers had the momentum, they were shackled at the death with quick Shabnim Ismail cleverly changing her pace and bowling into the wicket. A desperate Strikers went for broke with Mack run-out after turning back for an unlikely second run. They finished on a high with a Wolvaardt boundary but the total ultimately was not enough, with the last two overs bringing just 15, as Strikers’ title defence has started with two defeats from their opening four games.

PSG have been handed a double blow in their ambitions to lift the maiden iteration of the revamped Club World Cup, with defensive duo Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez set to miss the remainder of the competition due to suspension.

Pacho was sent off in the 82nd minute of PSG's 2-0 quarter-final win over Bayern Munich in the Club World Cup after a nasty challenge on Leon Goretzka. Hernandez followed suit, receiving his marching orders in stoppage time for elbowing Raphael Guerreiro in the face. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has announced that both players have been suspended for two matches for violating Article 14, paragraph 1(e) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. That means that in addition to missing the semi-final against Real Madrid, Pacho and Hernandez will also serve suspension in the final, should they advance.

While PSG's defensive duo will miss the rest of the competition, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee have opted to hand just a one-match ban to Real Madrid centre-back Dean Huijsen, who was sent off following his challenge on Serhou Guirassy in stoppage time during Madrid's 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund. The 20-year-old's absence, though, could prove to be a major setback against the high-flying Les Parisiens in the semi-final, having proven himself to be the most reliable defender in the early phase of head coach Xabi Alonso's tenure.

Jadeja razes South Africa for 83 after Kohli scores 49th ODI ton

Virat Kohli gifted himself a record-equalling 49th ODI century and India their eighth successive victory in this World Cup, on his 35th birthday. When Kohli drew level with Sachin Tendulkar, with a punched single in the penultimate over of India’s innings, a crowd of 60,000 at Eden Gardens celebrated with Kohli and made it a memorable birthday bash.Kohli, who walked out to bat in the sixth over after Rohit Sharma had won the toss and challenged India to bat, batted till the end of the innings, lifting India to an above-par 326 for 5. He ended up outscoring South Africa who could manage just 83 in 27.1 overs. Ravindra Jadeja bagged career-best figures of 5 for 33 to wreck South Africa’s chase and consign them to their joint second-lowest total in ODI cricket. Most of Kohli’s centuries in recent times have had an air of inevitability about them. Sunday’s innings was anything but. The conditions in Kolkata were challenging and even Kohli had struggled to get the old ball away. South Africa’s left-arm spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi also challenged Kohli with drift, dip and turn.Related

In his very first over, Maharaj had knocked Shubman Gill (23) over with a ripper that beat his outside edge to trim the off bail. When Maharaj bowled a similar delivery to Kohli, the ball missed the outside edge. Having run away to a fast start – he was on 17 off 13 balls at one point – Kohli slowed down against spin, but he navigated that passage of play to pick the seamers away. When Lungi Ngidi was brought back into the attack in the 35th over, Kohli jumped out of his crease and shovelled him away for four.Maharaj’s boundary-less spell – 10-0-30-1 – was a throwback to ODIs in the 90s. Even Shreyas Iyer, who is arguably India’s best player of spin, couldn’t throw Maharaj off his lines and lengths. Iyer instead lined up Shamsi for four boundaries and allowed Kohli to bat deep into the innings. After being on 12 off 35 balls, Iyer zoomed to 77 off 87 balls.Quinton de Kock wears a dejected look after being bowled out in the second over of the chase•ICC via Getty Images

With no batting insurance in the form of Hardik Pandya, who has now been sidelined from the rest of the tournament, Kohli refused to take any undue risks. Suryakumar Yadav (22) and Jadeja (29) took such risks at the other end, ensuring that India passed 300.It was Rohit who had laid the foundation for the 134-run third-wicket partnership between Kohli and Iyer. The India captain dashed out of the blocks in the powerplay, cracking 40 off 24 balls. He dismantled Marco Jansen, the most prolific bowler in the powerplay in this tournament, and Ngidi, South Africa’s enforcer in the absence of Gerald Coetzee.Jansen ended up conceding 94 in 9.4 overs for just one wicket. As for Ngidi, he left the field two balls into the final over of India’s innings with an injury scare.South Africa’s troubles then seeped into their batting. Quinton de Kock chopped Mohammed Siraj on in the second over while Temba Bavuma was bowled by Jadeja, who got the new ball to rag away past the outside edge.Things were only going to get tougher against the older, softer ball. Jadeja and Mohammed Shami overpowered South Africa’s middle order. Jadeja removed Henrich Klaasen and David Miller while Shami bested Aiden Markram with Test-match line and length. After bringing a pair of deliveries back into Markram from over the wicket, Shami had one to leave the batter and kiss the outside edge.At one stage, it appeared like India might not even need Kuldeep Yadav, their premier spinner, with the ball. But Jansen and the tail wagged long enough to prompt the introduction of the left-arm wristspinner. Kuldeep kept them guessing by turning the ball both ways and came away with two wickets. Jadeja claimed his second five-wicket haul in ODI cricket; he also became the second Indian spinner, after Yuvraj Singh, to take a five-for in World Cups.

Former West Indies batter Joe Solomon dies at 93

Joe Solomon, the former West Indies and Guyana batter, died on Friday at the age of 93.Solomon played 27 Tests for West Indies between 1958 and 1965, scoring 1326 runs at an average of 34. Though he was a late starter in first-class cricket, debuting at 26, he proved his credentials quickly, as his first three innings in first-class cricket were centuries: 114 not out against Jamaica, 108 against Barbados, and 121 against the touring Pakistanis. From there, he was drafted straight into the West Indies squad to tour India; in his fourth Test, he scored an unbeaten 100 in Delhi, and averaged 117 in the series.Related

Solomon, though, is perhaps most remembered for his role in the tied Test against Australia at the Gabba in 1960. With six runs to win off the final eight-ball over, and with three wickets remaining, Australia looked set to steal an already dramatic Test. But with Richie Benaud and Wally Grout falling in quick succession, Australia were left needing one run off two balls, with just one wicket remaining. Lindsay Kline, the last batter, nudged the next ball to square leg and tried to steal a single, but Solomon’s dead-eye aim caught Ian Meckiff short of his crease, resulting in the first ever tied Test.Although he made useful runs in the that Test, Solomon’s batting on that tour is best remembered for the minor controversy in the second Test, at the MCG, when he was out hit-wicket as his cap fell on the stumps.
