Australia have flaws to exploit in the Ashes – Winfield-Hill

Batter with 23 caps against the Aussies says it’s a case of matching them for long enough

Lauren Winfield-Hill says there’s “nowhere to hide” during an Ashes series•ICC

As a cricketer with 23 caps against Australia, Lauren Winfield-Hill remains sure of one thing. They have flaws to exploit. It is something she and her England team-mates have seen first-hand. The issue, however, has been an inability to take advantage when those flaws have presented themselves. Something must change to ensure the upcoming women’s Ashes do not play to type.Australia have triumphed in three out of the last four series, and arrive as defending World Champions in both ODI and T20I formats. Winfield-Hill herself has only tasted success in four of those 23 matches against them. The tourists are undoubtedly favourites going into the multi-format series, which begins with a five-day Test match at Trent Bridge on June 22. The key for Winfield-Hill, however, is to ensure England approach the series without any baggage. Only then can England take the pressure moments that present themselves within games, something they have often failed to do in the past.Related

Katherine Sciver-Brunt retires from international cricket after 19-year career

Australia 'a little bit rattled' by Lanning's sudden Ashes withdrawal

Women's game caught in a Test conundrum

“There’s absolutely nowhere to hide,” said Winfield-Hill. “An Ashes series is the toughest thing you will ever play.”I think the belief we have to connect with, and the thing we have to do better, is when they’re a collective and we’re a collective is to have a little bit more belief, get in the dogfight a little bit more. Probably the biggest difference in the past is not necessarily being skills, it’s probably cricket smarts.”But I think it’s probably playing the game situation more logically and riding those high-pressure moments better than we have done in the past because when you look at previous Ashes series, they’ve just held on that little bit longer and then the pressure will subside and you get a window. Whereas we’ve potentially not held onto that and cracked too early and then the floodgates open.”They have flaws as well. We’ve seen when they’ve been put under pressure in finals they’ve shown the same weaknesses if you can match them for long enough. It’s relentless.”One aspect seen as a potential plus point for England is a relatively new squad. The transition over the last two years, not least with the retirement of stalwart Katherine Sciver-Brunt, has seen new talent come to the fore on the international stage. The likes of Issy Wong, Lauren Bell, Charlie Dean and the more experienced Alice Davidson-Richards have assumed greater roles within the England set-up across formats. Aligned with skipper Heather Knight, vice-captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and the older heads like Winfield-Hill there is scope for a new chapter in this rivalry driven by those without bad memories of playing Australia.”You need balance,” said Winfield-Hill. “A good changing room environment has good balance between senior players and youth. I think that is a really big thing, to have enough players that don’t have battle scars, going in with that naivety that it is just cricket, there is no history because they haven’t played in the Ashes before.”It’s a good thing, to be open-minded. They know what to expect because they have watched it, but it’s different being out there. I think that’s a strength of the squad. You can’t hide, there are scars. We have had some really tough Ashes series in the past. You need youngsters to go in and give it a red hot crack because they don’t have that history.”As for her own role this summer, the 32-year-old is more at ease. She expects to play some part, most likely in the three T20s sandwiched between the Test match and the three ODIs.Winfield-Hill was part of the squad which travelled to South Africa for the T20 World Cup in February, although her last appearances for England were in four of the five T20Is on the tour of West Indies at the end of 2022 and she is not an England contracted player.Following her stint for Oval Invincibles in the Hundred during the last English summer, she went on to play in the Big Bash League for Melbourne Stars, PSL and FairBreak Invitational tournament. That allowed her to continue testing herself against high-level opposition while her international appearances were limited. Without those competitions, she feels she would not have been able to regain her place in the England squad after being dropped midway through the 50-over World Cup early last year.”Without the game growing in a franchise space I’d be long gone probably,” Winfield-Hill said. “But because I had the opportunity to go and play in different competitions, I managed to just keep my foot in the door and they’re obviously seen as well-respected competitions. If you score some decent runs in that you’re obviously in a very good space.”Regarding for her role now, she senses a level of duty when it comes to England, who will name their Ashes squad next week. While she is focusing on getting the best out of herself, she acknowledges her status as a senior player and knows the importance of embracing it for the rest of the group.”It’s a fine line really because I’m not a constant in that England set-up, I’m not a contracted player anymore so it’s just striking that balance.”The youngsters, their job is to play, flourish and learn on the job really. I think the way I try to do it is just the way I am in terms of how I operate, how I communicate. I enjoy helping the youngsters on their way and I think a lot of the time it’s not something that needs to be forced on you – you’re a senior player so you have to be someone to look up to.”You spend a lot of your career being really selfish and just wanting to punch out performances, don’t you? And you’re very tunnel vision in terms of ‘I need a score’ and I think something that’s enabled me to play as well as I have the last couple of years is letting go of that. I’m still very ambitious, I still have lots of desire to keep playing for a long time but I have probably taken the pressure off myself. In terms of going into other environments as well, you can’t just go in and be focused on yourself and your own job.”You have to get around the new team, meet new people and help youngsters. I think that’s been really good for me. I’ve played in quite a few teams – I keep thinking it’s the teams but it’s me getting old – where I am thinking there are loads of youngsters where actually I’m the common denominator here.”

Celtic eye move to sign "strong" gem who’s impressed chief Parkhead scout

With young striker Daniel Cummings currently heading for the exit door as a free agent, Celtic have reportedly turned their attention towards signing another rising star who has already impressed their chief scout.

Celtic transfer news

How busy the Bhoys are this summer remains to be seen. After all, they once again sit a class above the rest of the Scottish Premiership and came closer than they have done for a long time to reaching the Champions League last 16, having pushed Bayern Munich all the way. So, in truth, Brendan Rodgers may find himself in a position of luxury when the transfer window swings open.

Instead, the former Leicester City manager may have to keep an eye on the exit door amid rumours surrounding the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Cummings’ likely exit. The interest in both players should come as no surprise either. Kuhn has stolen the show at times this season, scoring 18 goals and assisting another 13 to emerge onto the radar of Tottenham Hotspur and others.

Cummings, meanwhile, is set to be out of contract this summer after failing to put pen to paper on a fresh deal amid a lack of first-team opportunities. With 23 goals in 22 Lowland League games at youth level this season, it’s fair to say that the Scottish champions will be losing a prospect they must replace.

It’s something that they seem to be well aware of too. According to The Daily Record, Celtic are now eyeing a summer deal to sign Owen Stirton from Dundee United this summer following his impressive loan spell at Scottish League One side Montrose.

It’s there that the 18-year-old striker has impressed Celtic’s chief scout, Tosh McKinlay, who watched him in action as Montrose drew 0-0 against Kelty Hearts in a rare day without a goal for the teenager with six in seven league games this season.

"Talented" Stirton would ease Cummings blow

After enjoying an excellent spell out on loan, Stirton is set to return ready for bigger and better things. Whether that’s with Dundee or, indeed, with Celtic seems to be the big question. There’s no doubt that the teenager has shown the potential to step up to the Scottish champions in years to come, but the Bhoys could make their move far sooner than that before reaping the rewards.

Daniel Cummings for Celtic

Dubbed “strong” by The Courier’s Dundee United reporter Alan Temple last year, the decision will be the biggest of Stirton’s career so far. Whilst he may look towards Cummings’ situation as one to take advantage of, however, the young forward must ensure that he avoids following the same path as the Celtic prospect who has struggled for senior minutes.

Having already impressed at senior level, Stirton has earned the chance to avoid a return to youth football which may well come with a summer switch to Celtic Park. As attractive as a move to the Scottish champions may be, the young Dundee forward certainly has a lot to consider if they come calling.

"I've heard" – McCoist makes claim on Rangers and attacking 4-3-3 manager

Rangers icon Ally McCoist has made a manager claim on an attacking boss who he’s heard could move to Ibrox.

Rangers manager rumours

The Gers could be extremely busy off the pitch over the coming months, with the 49ers Enterprises agreeing a deal in principle to take over as owners at Ibrox.

There is also the matter of looking to hire a new full-time manager after parting ways with Philippe Clement. Former captain Barry Ferguson is in interim charge until the end of the campaign and didn’t do his chances of landing the job permanently any harm with an impressive win away to Fenerbahce.

Rangers will now take a 3-1 lead into the Europa League last 16 second leg, and Ferguson’s name has been mentioned as a contender to take over on a full-time basis.

Other potential targets include Derek McInnes of Kilmarnock and former Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner, whereas it has also been claimed that Rangers and the 49ers have made Rafael Benitez the preferred managerial target.

Ferguson has made 9/10 Rangers ace look like "the best player in the world"

Rangers put one foot in the Europa League quarter-finals by beating Fenerbahçe in İstanbul on Thursday night, with one player in particular starring.

Ex-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has also been named in the media about potentially returning to Ibrox before Clement’s sacking, four years on from winning the Scottish Premiership with the club. Now, McCoist has made a new claim on Rangers and Gerrard.

McCoist makes claim on Gerrard returning to Rangers

Talking to Football Insider, McCoist admitted he’s “heard” that Gerrard could be on his way back to Glasgow with Rangers.

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

“The other one I’ve heard is Steven Gerrard coming back. He’s out of work, but I’m not sure what his current situation is. I think one of the slight problems might be would be him having to stay out of the country for tax reasons.”

Gerrard, who plays an attacking 4-3-3 formation, even shares the same Wasserman agency as Rangers duo John Souttar and Danilo.

As well as Gerrard, McCoist named Kevin Muscat as another interesting option. “Another one who interested me was Kevin Muscat, with his team currently trying to get into the Asian Champions League, but they’re struggling a little bit. He’s been very successful, having won a League Cup double in China.”

Since leaving Scotland in November 2021, Gerrard has struggled at both Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, averaging 1.18 points per game at Villa Park and 1.33 in Saudi Arabia.

He parted ways with Al-Ettifaq at the end of January and is still out of a job, so that could potentially appeal to Rangers, and it could be one to keep an eye on.

Klopp signed "the next Trent", now he may never play for Liverpool again

Things are getting real at Anfield. A lot of Liverpool fans are going to be feeling rather glass-half-empty right now, what with Trent Alexander-Arnold all but confirmed as a Los Blancos Galactico.

It’s been a long time coming. The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has been coy on his future for a long while, actually neglecting to discuss the matter for the past several months.

It would take something extraordinary and, frankly, unrealistic to see the England star pen new terms at his boyhood club. It is what it is, and now FSG must accelerate plans for a successor.

How Liverpool are going to replace Alexander-Arnold

When asked a question on whether Conor Bradley could succeed Alexander-Arnold in the event of his departure, Arne Slot responded evasively. Read between the lines, however, and you can ascertain that he answered in the affirmative.

Bradley, 21, is going to bear increased responsibility next term, but he’s certainly done enough through his maiden years as a professional thus far to prove he has what it takes. Indeed, even pundit Rio Ferdinand had to admit that the Northern Irishman was “phenomenal” when breaking onto the scene last year.

As you will see below, two very different widemen. This works in Liverpool’s favour, balancing Slot’s system with two dynamic and contrasting parts, but Liverpool’s loss will still cut deep.

It’s a shame Liverpool have to venture into the transfer market at all this summer. Plans were drawn several years ago to fully bolster Liverpool’s right-back department, but a prodigious young star has sadly fallen by the wayside after once being viewed as Trent’s heir.

Liverpool's forgotten Trent heir

Liverpool were a day late and a dollar short in the Premier League title race last season. That doesn’t look like it will be the case this term, and Alexander-Arnold will bow out as a two-time champion in the top flight.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is substituted

Bradley can serve in his stead, for sure, but there’s a question regarding the 21-year-old’s fitness levels, routinely sidelined this term. Liverpool actually have a long-forgotten Trent heir, Bradley’s age-mate, who was anticipated to become a mainstay in Jurgen Klopp’s Red side, but that doesn’t look likely anymore.

In June 2022, Liverpool moved to sign teenage right-back Calvin Ramsay from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen for an initial fee of £4.2m. A further £2.5m in add-ons was agreed, but it doesn’t look like clauses will have been met for such a payment, on an individual basis at least.

Through a mixture of athletic ability, creativity and determination, Ramsay boasts the prototypical skillset of a modern full-back. Similar, in a way, to the talents of Bradley.

Although maybe it would be remiss to exclude the significance that was placed on his playmaking skills. BBC Scotland’s Liam McLeod even remarked following the youngster’s transfer to Merseyside that “the way he plays the game has been modelled” on Alexander-Arnold. The Athletic’s JJ Bull tipped him to be the “next Trent”.

In this way, there’s clearly a long-lost creative force that Liverpool could have used this summer to jostle with Bradley for the top spot, perhaps retaining Alexander-Arnold’s spirit as he ventures off for pastures new in the Spanish capital.

Injuries have unfortunately been the bane of the one-cap Scotland international’s fledgling career, but there truly was such a crackling of excitement regarding his potential.

During those early days at Aberdeen, the teenager posted a goal and nine assists across only 39 senior appearances, highlighting the playmaking quality which Trent has sharpened over the years.

The series of failed loan spells in recent years have, of course, kept Ramsay away from Liverpool’s first team. Injury problems emerged from the offing, limiting him to just two appearances under Klopp’s wing during his debut campaign in England, featuring off the bench against Napoli in the Champions League and playing the full 90 as Liverpool beat Derby County in the Carabao Cup.

Calvin Ramsay for Liverpool.

Against the Rams, he caught the eye even as Liverpool struggled, forced into a penalty shootout that saw Caoimhin Kelleher produce one of his many clutch performances between the sticks. The Liverpool Echo actually awarded the young Scot a 7/10 match rating, hailing his ‘impressive athleticism and tenacious defending.’

Ramsay was regarded as being tailor-made for Liverpool and specifically Klopp’s system, and his performance in the Carabao Cup only reinforced this notion, completing the most passes on the pitch at 105 and leading those such as Liverpool.com to predict he would be set for a big future.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Ramsay is now back out on loan, playing in Scotland with Kilmarnock. It’s the 21-year-old’s fourth short-term stint away from Anfield since the start of last season, with a catalogue of damaging injuries stunting his progress.

A depreciation in market value marks the defender’s struggles. Transfermarkt record that Ramsay is worth just £2m at present, even less than the sharp fee FSG paid for his services three years ago.

He’s still young and hopes will be high that the Scotsman can forge a successful career for himself after such exciting beginnings in his homeland. Sadly, it just won’t be at Anfield.

Once such an “exceptional” young talent – as was said by Klopp, commenting on his emergence at Aberdeen – Ramsay has endured a nightmare few years on Liverpool’s books. It doesn’t seem likely he will be serving as Alexander-Arnold’s heir any time soon.

Cristiano Ronaldo rules OUT sensational Club World Cup appearance despite 'talks and proposals' as Al-Nassr superstar prepares to U-turn on potential exit by signing new contract

Speaking ahead of Portugal's appearance in the UEFA Nations League final against Spain, Ronaldo was asked to clarify his situation regarding the Club World Cup amid rumours of signing with a new side specifically to play in the newly-expanded tournament. It is, he said, "almost decided" he won't be there, despite offers coming in.

With an expiring Al-Nassr contract, the possibility of Ronaldo featuring at the Club World Cup – even if just on a month-long contract – gathered pace when FIFA president Gianni Infantino teased it in a recent video with YouTuber and streamer Speed. "Cristiano Ronaldo might play for one of the teams as well. There are discussions with some clubs," he said at the time. Al-Hilal, Botafogo and Monterrey were most heavily linked.

The presence of even a 40-year-old Ronaldo would have been a major marketing boost. FIFA had already shoehorned Lionel Messi into the event, somewhat controversially handing the designated 'host' spot to Inter Miami on account of their 2024 Supporters' Shield win. Many felt that place should have gone to overall MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy instead.

"It's almost decided that I will not take part at the FIFA Club World Cup, despite receiving many invitations and proposals," Ronaldo said on Saturday in a press conference. "There have been talks, contacts…but you have to think about short, medium and long-term."

When Ronaldo took to social media last month to say "this chapter is over", a split from Al-Nassr after two-and-a-half years looked the likely path. But with no Club World Cup cameo and reports of an agreement over a new contract in place, he looks increasingly likely to stay. Ronaldo has no immediate plans to retire and is still chasing becoming the first player to score 1,000 official senior career goals – he currently has 937, which means 63 to go.

The devil's in the detail as Stuart Broad gets his horns up for the cause

England’s old stage-seizer sparks anarchic scenes on thrilling fourth day at Edgbaston

Vithushan Ehantharajah19-Jun-2023The devil on Joe Root’s shoulder just before 11am. The demon terrorising Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith just before 7pm. A day in the life of Stuart Broad is rich and varied. On Monday, Broad added a new entry to his roller-dex of Ashes moments. A vital top-order dual hit on Labuschagne and Smith in the space of 12 deliveries means we enter the final day of a compelling first Test with victory as likely for England as Australia.Removing the No.1 and No.2-ranked batters in the world is worthy of dedicating a thousand words to Broad, particularly at a time when England were desperate for something to take with them into Tuesday. Most of those words might as well be Broad’s own from back in April, when he claimed he’d invented a mystery outswinger in order to get Labuschagne and Smith uncertain outside off stump … which is exactly what they proved to be when they came into his sights this evening. But we know the 36-year-old Broad does not simply bowl ‘top-of off wobble-seam, top-of-off wobble-seam, surprise outswinger’. He is a rambunctious spirit possessing an inner light that is less soothing and more strobe – and evidently infectious, as Root found out before walking out to play a reverse-ramp to the first ball of the morning, delivered by Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins”I sit next to Rooty in the changing room, and he just went, ‘I fancy a reverse-scoop for six, first ball’,” Broad revealed. “I said, ‘If it’s in your gut, you’ve got to go for it – that’s what we’re about.’ And he goes, ‘I’ll decide when I’m walking out’. Obviously he didn’t change his mind.”Root missed with that initial gambit. But the statement had been made. The dressing-room and crowd were immediately dialled up to 11. For that agenda-setting first half-hour, he remained a batter possessed, going on to successfully scoop Scott Boland for six and four in successive deliveries, until – with the field now dancing to his beat – he reverted briefly to more typical accumulative nudges. But then, on 46, he skipped down the track to Nathan Lyon and was stumped for the first time in his career.Stuart Broad wheels away in delight after dismissing Steve Smith during an inspired spell•AFP/Getty ImagesIt was from that point on England began losing their grip on the game, having had a fist-full of it at 129 for three – a lead of 136 – with Root and Harry Brook at ease and scoring freely. Were it not for important late-order runs, this game might be skewed much further Australia’s way. Broad finished unbeaten on 10 but ensured that 44 more were added during his time at the crease, alongside Ollie Robinson and James Anderson.”Today’s just been one of those days that sums up Ashes cricket really,” Broad said. “You’re getting ahead of the game, then you lose a wicket, you think you’re getting ahead of the game, then you lose a wicket again.”As for those key dismissals, Broad was asked if he has a mental edge over both, particularly after handing Labuschagne a first golden duck of his career in the first innings, as part of a haul of three for 68 that included bagging David Warner for a 15th time. “Be nice, wouldn’t it?” he said with a smile. “I’ve had a lot great battles, and they’ve probably won most of them.” He’s certainly winning this one.Related

“One thing we know as a bowling group, you’ve got to try and put them under pressure early,” he added. “They’re the sort of guys, if they get to 30, 40, they don’t give it away cheaply. We know as a group we want to try and make them play as much as we possibly can early. They’ve scored a lot of runs against us as a group, so to see the back of them twice in this Test match without too much damage is awesome.”For Broad to have had the match he has so far is a testament to Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. As much for the rejuvenation in the quick’s career under their tenure as for the decision to select him in this fixture. Smith’s demise – the ball seaming away after angling in to catch an edge through to Jonny Bairstow – was Broad’s 50th wicket under the new regime, taking him to 587 overall. There is one more day for Broad to impose himself on this game, then plenty more beyond that, with four Tests to come. And as much as his own individual plans to the likes of Usman Khawaja and Travis Head will determine who ends up on top, there is a more collective approach to be adopted around striking a balance between attack and defence with unconventional fields, bordering on rascal.”When you’ve got a set target to defend, you’ve got to keep one eye on the boundaries as well,” Broad said. “And actually, on a pitch like this, where it’s quite slow and hard to create a mistake from a batter, you don’t want to leak too many runs easily waiting for that ball to break through. I think we’ll be smart with the fields we use. We need to protect the boundaries in certain players’ strengths. But ultimately our No.1 focus is to take wickets, and how do we do that? From creating pressure.”You’ll probably see more fielders scattered around, almost like in-out fields. You know how Warnie used to bowl?” he added. “He’d have four people around the bat and three people on the boundary. Three an over is not hurting you, then you get the wicket and you can apply some pressure.”Joe Root was egged on by Broad to deploy his ramp shot to the first ball of the day•Getty ImagesCiting Shane Warne felt like a deliberate nod to the 2005 fixture here, which England secured by two runs on a pulsating final day. The similarity between the targets – 282 then, 281 now – and the fact Tuesday is also sold out adds to the sense that this Ashes series will recreate that great spectacle of 2005.”I’m quite conscious I don’t want to build up too much hype of that ’05 Edgbaston because I’m not sure we want that going to two runs tomorrow from our point of view, do we?” Broad said. But a veteran whose success has fundamentally come from his unrivalled feel of the game is all too aware of how the cards are lining up, on the field and off it. Four days in, it’s not hard to imagine that day five will be every bit as gripping as what’s gone before.”It does feel like the same energy as ’05,” Broad said. “And if we have a series like that we’re going to inspire a lot of kids to play the game, aren’t we?”

The Premier League champions have been working hard since the end of the season to sign Bayer Leverkusen's in-demand Wirtz, as they looked to beat the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich to the signing of the 22-year-old. Liverpool submitted their first offer for the German international last week but saw their mammoth €130 million (£110m/$148m) bid rejected by Die Werkself as they looked to hold out for a transfer fee of €150 million (£127m/$171m).

The total offer still falls short of Bayer Leverkusen's demanded price by a fair margin, which the Reds are unwilling to meet.

Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg also reported that Liverpool have indeed tabled fresh conversations with Die Werkself and the two sides are very close to reaching an agreement for the record-breaking transfer of Wirtz. The report added that a deal is now 'just a matter of time'.

Will Jacks, Sam Curran pile on the runs as Chris Jordan four-for seals Surrey win

Surrey made their highest T20 score at the Kia Oval as they crushed understrength Glamorgan by 81 runs to chalk up a fifth win in their last six Vitality Blast South Group games.Opener Will Jacks top scored with 69, his third fifty in this season’s competition, and there were cameos from Laurie Evans (40) and Sunil Narine (36) to lay the platform for a brutal assault by the Curran brothers in the closing overs.Sam cleared the ropes six times as he smashed 59 off 22 balls and Tom contributed 23 off 13 as they plundered 80 runs from the last 33 deliveries before Sam was bowled looking to ramp Jamie McIlroy off the final ball of the innings. Surrey’s 238 for 5 was also the third highest score in their T20 history.Glamorgan, whose injury issues meant they gave debuts to three players, also conceded their third highest score in the format. They made 157 for 8 in reply but despite this defeat still have a chance of reaching the knockout stages with four games to go.With the influential Colin Ingram injured, Glamorgan have brought in New Zealand batter Cam Fletcher, 30, on a short-term basis. Fletcher has been playing in the Bradford League for New Farnley while batter Will Smale and right-armer Andy Govin were also making their debuts for the county in T20.Gorvin was the only bowler whose economy rate was below ten an over as Surrey, put in on a green-tinged pitch, cruised along at 12 an over for most of their innings.Jacks and Evans had 64 up in the powerplay before Evans, who made 118 when the teams met in Cardiff earlier this month, was superbly caught by wicketkeeper Chris Cooke cutting leg-spinner Peter Hatzoglou in the seventh over just when he was starting to cut loose.Glamorgan briefly stemmed the flow in the middle of the innings by claiming three wickets in 11 balls. Jacks, who’d hit eight fours and two sixes, cut to backward point and Sunil Narine (36 off 18) holed out to long off to give Hatzoglou two wickets in five balls. Jamie Overton top-edged a pull but that brought the Curran brothers together and the fun began.McIlroy was hit for five sixes in his final two overs and Hatzoglou two with Sam Curran unveiling some eye-catching shots and clean hitting, the highlight the successive sixes off McIlroy down the ground in the final over as he passed fifty in the format for the 14th time. Leeds and Farke given new int'l break injury boost alongside Ethan Ampadu

Leeds United are set to be handed a welcome double injury boost which involves captain Ethan Ampadu.

Farke facing big Leeds calls ahead of Championship run-in

The Whites and Daniel Farke are now preparing for a dash to the line in the Championship, looking to beat Sheffield United and Burnley to promotion and the second-tier title.

Leeds have taken just five points from their last four games which has allowed the Blades and the Clarets to close in, with eight fixtures remaining starting against Swansea City on Saturday.

One of the big talking points after the 2-2 draw with QPR last time out was Wilfried Gnonto’s impact in the No. 10 position, an area of the pitch Farke could look to address over the coming weeks. Gnonto replaced Brenden Aaronson at half-time and received praise from Farke after helping Leeds take a point away from London.

“I was convinced he would make an impact. If I had opted for Ilia Gruev [to start the match] I would also have opted for Willy Gnonto. Perhaps we would have had a better start if we had made those changes. The feeling is he’s playing more and more to create good situations in the centre and that’s what he did in the second half.”

Unfortunately, after an injury scare away with Italy U21s in the international break, Gnonto may not be immediately available to Farke as Leeds wait to see the extent of the ankle issue. However, the Whites have two players who look set to be close to a return.

Leeds to welcome back Ampadu and Bamford for run-in

As per Joe Donnohue of The Yorkshire Evening Post, Ampadu has been stepping up his knee injury recovery during the international break and is on course to return to team training.

The versatile midfielder has missed Leeds’ last five games and the club weren’t sure if his knee problem would require surgery, but it looks as if he could play a part in the run-in.

Alongside Ampadu, Patrick Bamford is finally closing in on a return from a hamstring injury. Donnohue adds that the forward ‘has been working on match fitness at Thorp Arch over the recent weeks and during the international break brought himself closer to an on-field return’.

Bamford has only played once in 2025 due to a hamstring issue but like Ampadu, could feature in the final eight games. Two experienced players in the Leeds squad, the pair returning would be a much-needed boost for Farke, who will be hoping to have every senior player available between now and May.

The West London side have not had the best success regarding attacking signings over the last few years, as Enzo Maresca’s side have seen struggles offensively despite their heavy investment on wingers. The Blues recently decided to reject the option to permanently sign Sancho from Manchester United following his season-long loan, and the Chelsea boss believes that the Blues ‘need to do something’ this summer to fill in the gap left by the England international.

    WHAT MARESCA SAID

Speaking to the media, Maresca said: "Jadon [Sancho] is not with us, so for sure that is a position we need to do something about. We have Noni [Madueke], Pedro [Neto] and [Tyrique George] only as the proper wingers, so something for sure is going to happen. When the transfer window is open, for sure, we can do something."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea were also in the market for an outright striker following Nicolas Jackson’s struggles in the second half of the 2024/25 season, and promptly signed Liam Delap before the Club World Cup. It has been reported that the Blues are also looking to sign another winger in the form of Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens this summer, as Maresca is keen on bolstering his squad’s attacking options with an eye on his side’s Champions League participation next season.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

After the conclusion of the Club World Cup, Chelsea will go hard at the chance to sign a winger, most likely Gittens, as he has been the Blues' primary wing target. The West London side have already seen two bids rejected by Borussia Dortmund so far; however, after the Club World Cup, Chelsea will look to pursue Gittens' signature with determination.
