Their own Rice: Spurs leading the race for "unbelievably gifted" £0 star

After what has been a disappointing campaign for Tottenham Hotspur this season, there will surely be plenty of transfer business done in the summer.

As things stand, the Lilywhites will not be playing in Europe next season, given they are languishing in 14th in the Premier League, with just 34 points to their name.

In fact, Ange Postecoglou’s side must win the Europa League in order to qualify for European competitions in 2025/26. Winning that particular competition will see them play Champions League football next campaign.

So, there could well be a squad overhaul for Spurs in the summer. Already, they have been linked with one addition in midfield.

Latest on Spurs' midfield search

One of the biggest bargains of the summer could be Angel Gomes. It seems like the England international will not renew his deal at French outfit Lille, and will depart the Ligue 1 club upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Well, according to a report from Pete O’Rourke for Football Insider, the Lilywhites ‘are leading the race’ to sign Gomes on a free this summer. This move comes as part of a ‘planning a potential midfield overhaul’ from Postecoglou over the summer.

One of the teams thought to be interested in signing Gomes at one stage was Manchester United, from which Gomes is an academy graduate.

However, the Red Devils are not thought to be in the running, as per the report. Instead, the North Londoners could face competition from clubs across Europe, from the likes of France, Spain and Germany, should they wish to sign Gomes.

Why Gomes could be Spurs' own Rice

Despite being just 24 years of age, Gomes has been in and around professional football since 2017. As a 16-year-old, he made his debut for Man United, the youngest player in 64 years to achieve the feat, beating the record held by the great Duncan Edwards.

Angel Gomes

After leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer in 2020, the Englishman joined Lille. He became an established member of their first team the year after joining, following a loan at Portuguese side Boavista.

In total, the versatile midfielder has played 134 times for the club, scoring ten goals and grabbing 19 assists. That included eight Ligue 1 assists last term, where he excelled in a number-eight role.

He is also capable of playing as a number ten and a number six, offering great versatility for Spurs’ midfield should he make the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The 24-year-old has already made a great impact for England. Despite not being included by Thomas Tuchel in his first squad during the recent international break, he thrived under interim boss Lee Carsley.

Gomes grabbed a brilliant assist for Jack Grealish against Finland, showing composure under pressure and sliding the Manchester City winger in behind with a lovely reverse pass.

If Spurs sign Gomes, he could become their very own verison of Declan Rice. The Arsenal star was described as “a wonderful midfield player” by Jamie Carragher in February and has certainly made a big impact in his 91 Gunners appearances so far.

Indeed, there are some differences between Rice and Gomes, notably in their physicality. Standing at just 5 foot 6 the Lille star is more lightweight than the 6 foot 2 Arsenal number 41.

However, Gomes makes up for it with his ability on the ball. He is extremely press-resistant and able to evade tackles with relative ease.

Arsenal's DeclanRicecelebrates after the match

Indeed, he can certainly be compared to Rice statistically on FBref, with the pair noted as similar players in Europe’s top five leagues, among their fellow midfielders.

Per 90 minutes, the former Man United star averages 5.98 progressive passes, compared to 6.21 for Rice. He also averages 0.61 successful take-ons, with Rice averaging just 0.42 per game.

As football statistician Statman Dave explained, Gomes is an “unbelievably gifted” player. He has an abundance of technical quality, and whilst he is smaller than some midfielders, he still possesses the ability to break up play, as the stats show.

For a free transfer, this could revolutionise the Spurs midfield and help them climb the Premier League table to compete for European spots again.

Fulham now make contact to sign £8m ace who may replace Timothy Castagne

Fulham have now made contact with a 23-year-old full-back in a bid to bring him to Craven Cottage, according to a new report.

Fulham planning raid on free transfer market

Marco Silva will have 100% focus on what remains of this Premier League season, but it appears the powers upstairs are already turning their attention to the summer transfer window. The Cottagers are still in the hunt for a European place, and that could mean their plans are changed, but as of now, they have their eye on two players who are set to become free agents at the end of the campaign.

Fulham are now looking to sign a player on a free transfer in the hope it will convince Marco Silva to remain at the club.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 20, 2025

Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof is one player Fulham are looking at possibly signing this summer, as he looks set to be a free agent as his contract comes to an end at Old Trafford. The Red Devils don’t look like they are going to offer a new deal, and therefore, Fulham, as well as teams such as West Ham, Everton and Wolves, are all interested in a possible swoop for the Sweden international.

Angel Gomes, a former United player, is another soon-to-be free agent that Fulham are not only considering signing but have held talks with over a possible move to London. The Englishman looks set to leave Lille, and the Premier League side believe he would fit into Silva’s team perfectly.

Fulham could sign £8m Greek star Vagiannidis to replace Castagne

As the Cottagers continue to scour the free transfer market, according to A Bola, relayed by Sport Witness, Fulham are also interested in signing defender Georgios Vagiannidis and have already made contact.

The report states that not only are Fulham interested in signing the 23-year-old right-back, but European giants Sporting CP and Ajax are also keen on securing the transfer this summer. It goes on to state that Fulham, as well as the two other teams, have followed Vagiannidis closely since the January transfer window and have already made formal contact in a bid to sign him for next season.

It isn’t clear if Fulham made contact with Panathinaikos, his camp or both, but the Cottagers are keen to strike an agreement. Sporting CP are said to have already made an offer worth €6 million, but the Greek side have rejected this as they want €10 million, which is roughly £8 million, and Fulham are now ready to step up their efforts to sign the defender.

Vagiannidis’ potential arrival at Craven Cottage could see him be a replacement for current first-choice right-back Timothy Castagne, who has played 19 times in the Premier League this season. The Belgian has started the last 13 league games, but given he is 29 and is out of contract in 2027, Silva may have his eyes on an upgrade.

Vagiannidis could become first choice when Kenny Tete departs as a free agent this summer, relegating Castagne to a support role.

Wyatt, Bouchier fireworks take Southern Vipers into Charlotte Edwards Cup final

Opening stand of 108 in 11 overs sets tone as Vipers hold off spirited Thunder

Danni Wyatt and Maia Bouchier smashed explosive fifties to set the foundations for Southern Vipers to beat Thunder and reach the Charlotte Edwards Cup final. England duo Wyatt and Bouchier shared a 108-run stand for the first wicket with scores of 76 and 56 respectively as Vipers chalked up 191 for 6 – despite Olivia Bell’s career-best 4 for 36.Although there were good contributions from Fi Morris, Deandra Dottin, Ellie Threlkeld, and Sophie Ecclestone, Thunder ended up 18 runs short on their Finals Day debut. Vipers will play the Blaze, who were unbeaten in the group stage, in the final at 4pm.The tone for a run-filled afternoon at New Road was set when Bouchier cut her first ball to the boundary after Thunder had stuck Vipers in to bat first. The first 11 overs were a masterclass of attractive power striking from Bouchier and Wyatt, the former preferring to go down the ground and the latter using her trademark cut plentifully. Both were released by England for this match, having spent time preparing for the upcoming Women’s Ashes Test, and proved why they are in the reckoning for the series against Australia. Their 108-run stand was Vipers’ highest partnership of the competition, as Bouchier won the race to a half-century. She got there in 29 balls to Wyatt’s 34, in the same over.Bouchier fell for her Charlotte Edwards Cup best of 56 – which included 10 fours – after a leading edge was caught by keeper Threlkeld after five seconds of hang time.Wyatt was unperturbed by the wicket as she pinged international team-mate Ecclestone for the only six of the innings – left-arm spinner Ecclestone would eventually return an uncharacteristically expensive 1 for 50.Vipers lost six wickets during the latter stages but maintained their run rate to reach 191 – their highest T20 score and the fourth-highest in the competition’s history. Those wickets were almost exclusively down to Bell – who had Georgia Adams caught at point, Wyatt crashing a huge full toss to deep midwicket, Freya Kemp bowled and Ella McCaughan stumped. The offspinner took two wickets in successive overs and boasts a scarcely believable tournament strike rate of 6.63 with her 11 wickets coming in just 12 overs.Thunder matched Vipers in the powerplay – both teams rocketed to 50 – thanks mostly to Morris’ six sweetly-struck boundaries. But they did lose Emma Lamb third ball when ramping Anya Shrubsole and Liberty Heap, bowled by Linsey Smith.Morris had come into the match on the back of scores of 36, 44 and 42 not out in her previous three innings – with Thunder winning four of their last five matches to reach Finals Day. She contributed with 36 before Georgia Elwiss plucked a stunning one-handed catch at full stretch.Former West Indies powerhouse Deandra Dottin needed only four balls before swishing a six over the leg side and continued with an array of attacking strikes in a 14-ball 24 before her aerial bombardment was ended by a catch at long-on.Ecclestone and Threlkeld put on a productive 42 before the former was caught three balls after being dropped for 33. Naomi Dattani skewed to point and the 25 needed off the final over was easily defended by Adams – as she picked up the wickets of Threlkeld and Danielle Collins for good measure.

Scenarios: What Scotland and Netherlands need to book the final World Cup 2023 spot

Zimbabwe’s 31-run defeat to Scotland means they can no longer qualify for the ODI World Cup in India later this year. That’s because their net run rate has fallen to -0.099, largely due to their heavy defeat against Sri Lanka, when they lost with almost 17 overs to spare.Zimbabwe were on six points with two games to spare, but they failed to get those two points which would have ensured qualification. If Netherlands beat Scotland on Thursday, then all three teams – Zimbabwe, Scotland and Netherlands – will finish on six points.Related

  • Spotlight on Bulawayo as Netherlands, Scotland battle for World Cup jackpot

  • Scotland's Sole-stirring bowling display knocks Zimbabwe out of World Cup

With Netherlands’ net run rate in the negative but already above Zimbabwe’s, any win for them will only improve that further, thus ensuring that Zimbabwe cannot finish in the top two. Thus, the focus now shifts to the Netherlands-Scotland game, and the result margins for those two teams to qualify. A win for Scotland will obviously take them through, but even if they lose, they could qualify if the margin of defeat is relatively small. If Netherlands score 250, Scotland can afford to lose by up to 31 runs to stay ahead on run rate. A win by 32 or more runs for Netherlands will lift their NRR above Scotland’s. If Scotland bat first and score 250, they will stay ahead on NRR if Netherlands chase it down in around 44.1 overs (depending on how they get their winning runs). If they chase it down any sooner, then Netherlands will trump Scotland’s run rate and take the second qualification spot.

He "scares people": Chelsea have found the new Duff & it's not Sancho

It looks set to be an interesting summer for Chelsea after another trophyless domestic season at Stamford Bridge, this time with Enzo Maresca in the dugout.

The Blues decided to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and brought the Italian in to replace him, but the Conference League is the club’s last chance to land a trophy this term.

Chelsea may want to make further changes to their playing squad to build a team that can compete for the Premier League title, or at least the League Cup and the FA Cup.

One player whose future is currently up in the air ahead of the summer transfer window is Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho, who the club have a £25m obligation to buy.

Jadon Sancho for Chelsea

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that the Blues will have to pay the Red Devils a fee of £5m to opt out of that obligation, and it remains to be seen whether they will do that or pay the £25m to sign him permanently.

Why Chelsea have a big problem with Jadon Sancho

Chelsea and Maresca have a big problem with this Sancho dilemma because there are pros and cons to either keeping him at Stamford Bridge or paying £5m to send him back to Old Trafford.

On the one hand, £25m to sign an England international who turns 25 this week seems like good business with fairly low risk, given the nature of the fee and the time he has on his side to contribute over several seasons.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

On the other hand, Sancho’s performances on the pitch across all competitions for the Blues this season have been a cause for concern, as the winger has only produced two goals and five assists in 29 matches.

This shows that the £100k-per-week forward has failed to make much of an impact at the top end of the pitch from a wide position for Maresca’s side, which is why there may be reticence to splash out £25m to sign him permanently.

Moments like the goal above have been few and far between and Chelsea may feel that they could find better value for money elsewhere in the domestic market, as they once did with the signing of Damien Duff from Blackburn Rovers.

How much Chelsea paid to sign Damien Duff

Back in the summer of 2003, Roman Abramovich splashed the cash to bolster the squad to compete for major honours, and one of the first signings of his era in charge of the club was Duff.

The Blues reportedly paid a fee of £17m to sign the Blackburn Rovers star after he had scored nine goals and provided one assist in 26 matches in the Premier League during the previous season.

His first season at Stamford Bridge ended with a solid return of six goals and 13 assists in 37 appearances in all competitions, as he showcased his ability to score and assist goals from a wide position.

The left-footed star followed that up with ten goals and 13 assists in 48 games in the 2004/05 campaign, including six assists in ten

Champions League outings, and helped Chelsea to win the Premier League title for the first time.

His form dipped in his last season at Stamford Bridge, with just three goals and four assists in all competitions, but he contributed to another top-flight title.

Overall, Duff turned out to be excellent value for money for the Blues, with his goals and assists in his first two seasons, as a domestic signing, and Maresca may have unearthed the club’s next version of him with Pedro Neto.

Why Pedro Neto is Chelsea's new Damien Duff

Unlike Sancho, Neto is similar to Duff in the sense that he is also a left-footed winger who wants to run at opposition players and take them on to make things happen for his side – an exciting player to watch.

Speaking about the Portugal international earlier this season, pundit Troy Deeney said: “Pace scares people. Coming in off that left foot, he can shoot or he can cross, but he’s also got that raw speed which is going to back defenders off.”

One of the great things about Neto is the simplicity of his game. He does not need to do fancy tricks and flicks to get by players, instead looking to just drive with his ball control and speed to put defenders on the back foot – just as Duff did during his time at Stamford Bridge.

As you can see in the clip above, the former Wolves and Lazio man took a touch out of his feet and smashed the ball into the bottom corner, rather than trying to overcomplicate it with more touches or by trying to find a top corner.

Chelsea reportedly paid £54m to sign the forward from Wolves last summer and he has shown more moments of quality than Sancho has this season, with five goals and six assists in 34 matches in all competitions.

As you can see in the table above, Neto created 31 chances in just 16 starts and provided four assists from a wide position, which shows that he can offer a big creative outlet on the flank.

However, an accumulation of 2.05 xG in 16 starts as a forward suggests that Maresca needs to find a way to get the winger into better goalscoring positions, to make the most of his finishing quality.

Only Enzo Fernandez (ten) and Cole Palmer (19) have created more ‘big chances’ for Chelsea in the Premier League, though, so there is not much that needs to change from his performances in that sense.

If the manager can get Neto to add more goals to his game to go along with his creative brilliance then the Blues could have another Damien Duff on their hands, as the Portuguese starlet already shares so many similarities with the Irishman.

After Yamal: Chelsea can soon unleash the world's second-best wonderkid

The Chelsea youngster could emerge as a first-team option for Enzo Maresca next season.

ByDan Emery Mar 21, 2025

Like Duff, Neto is a left-footed winger who wants to beat players with pace and dribbling, rather than using fancy skills, and is a player who can consistently create high-quality chances for his teammates to find the back of the net.
