Though he never got the opportunity to coach the Reds, Ancelotti eventually found his way to Merseyside when he accepted the Everton job in 2019. Speaking with Italianjournalist on Swiss station , the veteran coach expressed admiration for the Toffees and also reminisced about the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.

  • WHAT ANCELOTTI SAID

Ancelotti said: "My dream was to coach Liverpool, but then I found myself at Everton and I experienced their rivalry, and now I am absolutely an Everton fan. I really liked the environment, because there is a spectacular passion for the colours. Cricket Scotland revealed to be institutionally racist in damning independent report

Governing body to be placed in special measures after 448 racist incidents are revealed

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jul-2022Cricket Scotland is to be placed into special measures at least until October 2023, and could stand to lose public funding worth £460,000 a year from , following the publication of a damning report into institutional racism within the sport.A total of 448 examples of institutional racism were revealed in the Changing the Boundaries report, carried out by consultancy firm , while Cricket Scotland failed in 29 out of 31 tests used to measure the scale of the problem – and barely met the required standard in the remaining two.On Sunday, in anticipation of the report’s findings, the board of Cricket Scotland resigned en masse, with an apology to those affected by institutional racism, notably Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh, the two former players whose allegations of victimisation had set the review in motion, but also with an acknowledgement that the scale of the problem was beyond the scope of the sport’s existing governance.Plan4Sport’s investigation took in the testimony of nearly 1000 participants across all areas of Scottish cricket, and outlined 68 individual concerns that have been referred for further investigation, including 31 allegations of racism against 15 different people, two clubs and one regional association. Some of these have also been referred to Police Scotland as hate crimes, including one incident that has already resulted in a court appearance. The allegations outlined include racial abuse, inappropriate language, favouritism to white children from public-school backgrounds and a lack of transparency in selection for non-white players.A survey conducted during the investigation found that 62 percent of respondents had experienced, seen or received reports of racism or other forms of discrimination. The report also found that the lack of diversity within Scottish cricket meant there was no consistent process for handling racist incidents, and that people who did raise issues tended to be “sidelined or ignored”. This was the fate that Haq encountered after being sent home from the 2015 World Cup, after which he never added to his then-national record of 54 ODI appearances.Louise Tideswell, MD of Plan4Sport and Stewart Harris, CEO of Sportscotland at the launch of a report into racism in Scottish cricket•Getty Images

Cricket Scotland’s interim CEO, Gordon Arthur, described the report’s findings as a “watershed” moment for the sport, and issued a “heartfelt apology to all those who have been the victims of racism and discrimination in Scottish cricket”.”The racism and discrimination that has taken place in the sport that we all love should never have been allowed to happen, or to go unchallenged for so long,” Arthur said. “We recognise the impact this will have had on individuals and their families. We hope the report provides them with some reassurance that their voices have been heard, and we are sorry this did not happen sooner.”This report is a watershed moment for cricket in Scotland and taking its recommendations forward is the top priority. It’s clear that significant cultural change must happen and it must happen quickly. The immediate priority must be to get the independent referral process agreed and implemented so the investigations into the referrals can start.”Louise Tideswell, the managing director of Plan4Sport, praised the bravery of those who had come forward with their stories, and condemned Cricket Scotland’s leadership for failing to recognise the problems and thereby “enabling a culture of racially aggravated micro-aggressions to develop”.”I also want to add that whilst the governance and leadership practices of the organisation have been institutionally racist, the same should not be said for cricket in Scotland. There are many outstanding clubs and individuals delivering local programmes which truly engage with diverse communities.”Stewart Harris, the chief executive of Sportscotland, described the findings as “deeply concerning and in some cases shocking”, and added that they should serve as a “wake-up call for all of Scottish sport”.”Racism is a societal problem and it is no longer good enough to simply be non-racist, Scottish sport must now be actively anti-racist,” Harris said. “We will keep all options on the table as we hold Cricket Scotland to account on all of the recommendations contained within this report.”One of the key recommendations of the report is that future recruitment to the board should involve no more than a 60-40 gender ratio either way, including a minimum of 25 percent of members should come from minority ethnic backgrounds. In addition, an urgent review is to be held into the governance of Western District Cricket Union – one of Scotland’s five regional associations – which will be placed in special measures by Cricket Scotland, and suspended from overseeing disciplinary measures in the competitions under its auspices.

Emery identifies top target in £25m forward as Aston Villa plan late move

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has personally earmarked a highly-rated forward as one of his top targets for the end of the January window, with NSWE responding by planning a late move for him.

Aston Villa open to making another January signing

Speaking ahead of Villa’s clash against West Ham United on Sunday, Emery hinted at the possibility of his side making another January addition, especially considering Diego Carlos has now sealed a move to Turkish Süper Lig side Fenerbache.

Villa have already signed Donyell Malen in a £21 million deal from Borussia Dortmund, with Andres Garcia soon following the Netherlands international after putting pen to paper on a switch to the Midlands from Levante.

However, Carlos’ departure, alongside any other potential outgoings, could force Villa back into the January market – confirmed Emery on Friday.

“We are open to trying to improve the squad until the last moment, and as well, we are open in case someone is leaving,” said Emery.

“Of course, Diego Carlos left in the last week, and we have to replace him, and of course we are as well focusing on which players could be potential players to replace Diego Carlos.”

Some reports suggest that Villa are poised to submit a second January bid for Sevilla defender Loic Bade, following claims that they had a previous offer rejected and have been in talks throughout January.

However, Emery’s side are not just eyeing up new additions to their backline, as it is believed by some that another new forward accompanying Malen through the door is entirely possible as well.

Besiktas starlet Semih Kilicsoy could be that man, with the versatile 19-year-old attacker standing out as one of the Süper Lig’s brightest young talents over the last two campaigns.

The teenager can play out wide and up front as a natural striker, which may come as attractive for Emery. Kilicsoy’s form at Besiktas even prompted a call-up to Turkey’s national team squad for Euro 2024, where he briefly featured in their quarter-final against the Netherlands.

Aston Villa plan late move for Semih Kilicsoy after Unai Emery call

As per Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke, Villa are planning a late January move for Kilicsoy, coming after Emery personally identified the Turk as a top transfer target over the coming days.

He’s scored two goals and assisted six others in all competitions so far this campaign, but while these numbers aren’t exactly mind-blowing, Kilicsoy has been called one of Turkey’s most exciting ones to watch in recent years.

“I want to say that he will play for Beşiktaş for many years, but I don’t think we can keep him,” admitted Besiktas chief Feyyaz Uçar in an interview with Fanatik. “He is one of the most talented Turkish players in recent years,”

Tottenham were linked with a swoop for Kilicsoy after scouting him last year, as were other Premier League sides, so a move to England could be on the cards for him if Villa up the ante. However, it has also been reported that he could cost up to £25 million.

Aston Villa agree £6m deal to sign another new star; Unai Emery was key

Having already sealed the arrival of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, Aston Villa have now reportedly agreed a deal to sign a defensive reinforcement from La Liga.

Aston Villa transfer news

As Malen arrived, the man who he replaced headed for the exit door with Jaden Philogene completing his mid-season move to Ipswich Town just a matter of months after rejoining Aston Villa from Hull City. Those in the Midlands will hope that the more experienced Malen will have the desired impact that Philogene failed to make on his return.

Unai Emery recently spoke about what the Dutchman will add to his side, telling reporters: “He’s always close to the attacking third, close to getting into the opponent’s box to score goals and assists… We will need one player like him as well trying to threaten the opponent in-behind.”

Those behind the scenes at Villa Park have wasted no time admiring their new signing, however, with their focus instantly set on welcoming further reinforcements this month.

Names such as Oscar Mingueza have been mentioned and right-back seems to be the route that the Villans are going down, but it may not be in pursuit of the Celta Vigo man.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa have agreed a deal worth €7m (£6m) to sign Andres Garcia from Levante this month. The right-back has reportedly already spoken to Emery and, therefore, accepted Villa’s proposal as Relevo reported and Romano relayed.

The Levante ace looks set to give Matty Cash plenty of competition for that right-back role, that’s for sure, in a battle that could end with the latter watching on from the bench.

Garcia can push Cash all the way

Just 21 years old, Garcia very much seems like the future of Aston Villa’s right-hand side where he could take over from Cash sooner rather than later. The Poland international remains one of few weaknesses in Emery’s side and if they want to set their sights on Champions League football for the second season running then welcoming a replacement at this stage is no bad idea.

As the stats show, Garcia has had little trouble adding an attacking impetus to the current Levante side in a show of creativity that will only benefit the likes of Ollie Watkins and new signing Malen.

Compared to Cash on the defensive front, meanwhile, the 21-year-old has also impressed. His ability to recover possession is something that should help Emery’s side maintain their dominance and remain on the front foot in the remainder of the campaign.

Whilst top four is currently a little out of their reach, Villa’s January signings could quickly bridge that gap in the Premier League.

Worse than Solomon: Farke must drop Leeds ace who lost possession 24x

Leeds United extended their unbeaten run to seven matches in the Championship with a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road on New Year’s Day.

It was a match devoid of any real quality for the most part but the hosts appeared on course to snatch all three points after Pascal Struijk opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

However, poor defending from a corner just 90 seconds later allowed Danny Batth to smash home from close-range after several opportunities for Leeds to clear the danger.

There were a number of underwhelming performers across the pitch for Daniel Farke in the game, particularly in the forward line, and Manor Solomon is one star who failed to shine.

Manor Solomon's performance against Blackburn

The Tottenham Hotspur loanee was brought into the starting line-up after he came off the bench and created two ‘big chances’ for his side against Derby County at Pride Park in the previous match.

Unfortunately, however, the Israel international was unable to display that kind of creative quality again, as he failed to create any ‘big chances’ in his 70 minutes on the pitch, with just one key pass in total.

The 25-year-old dynamo lost possession ten times, and lost five of his six duels, but did complete 90% of his attempted passes, which shows that he was relatively reliable with the ball at his feet.

Ultimately, though, Solomon did not have the required impact in the final third and that is why he let Farke down with his underwhelming display on the left flank.

One Leeds star who was even worse than the Premier League loanee, however, was the winger on the other side of the pitch – Wales international Dan James.

Why Dan James should be dropped

With the attacking options that Farke has at his disposal, including Largie Ramazani and Wilfried Gnonto on the bench, the Whites wide men cannot afford to have bad games if they want to start regularly.

James, who did not start at Pride Park, came into the starting XI with a chance to nail down a place in the line-up moving forward into the rest of this month, and failed to take it.

The Welsh winger played the full match, including around 16 minutes of stoppage time across both halves, and was not directly involved in a goal, with just one shot on target – that was saved – and zero ‘big chances’ created.

As you can see in the table above, James was very wasteful with the ball at his feet, losing possession a staggering 24 times, and had little impact at the top end of the pitch.

He was even worse than Solomon, who created as many chances (one) as James and lost possession 14 fewer times to do so, and should be ruthlessly dropped from the team.

Farke needs more from his wide players if Leeds want to push on and secure an automatic promotion place in the second half of the season, and James did not do enough on Wednesday, which is why the forward should be ditched.

Liam Trevaksis top-scored with a career-best 55, but the home side were well off par and had a huge challenge to defend their total.Cameron Steel and Ryan Patel produced a brilliant stand of 132 for the second wicket to knock off the runs with ease. Steel led the way with his second List A half-century, pouring on the agony against his old club, who were ordinary at best in the field, dropping multiple chances.Surrey knocked off the winning runs with 21 overs to spare to get off the mark in the competition. After winning the toss, Surrey made the most of the new ball, dismissing Alex Lees and Scott Borthwick cheaply to make inroads into the Durham batting line-up. The 2021 Royal London Cup leading-run scorer Graham Clark looked comfortable in the early overs, scoring four boundaries to build his innings. However, his knock came to an end in frustrating circumstances, playing on to half-tracker from Dunn, reducing the hosts to 51 for 3 at the end of the powerplay. The visitors put themselves on top by dismissing Nic Maddinson for 18, picking out Kimber to hand McKerr his first wicket. Majid then tormented the hosts with his left-arm spin. Michael Jones got away with one edge between wicketkeeper and slip, but his second ended up in the grasp of Patel. In need of a partnership, Trevaskis and Tom Mackintosh held firm against the Surrey spinners to put on 60 for the seventh wicket. Trevaskis made his first List A half-century, but both set batters were out in quick succession as Kimber claimed two wickets to break the stand. Lees and Luke Doneathy put down the Surrey captain on 8 and 20 off Chris Rushworth before the veteran seamer finally got his man to dismiss Geddes, as Maddison clung on at point. However, Patel and Steel laid the foundations of a dominant partnership for the second wicket and worked down the total with ease.Patel did give an opportunity to Doneathy, but he continued his day to forget in the field by shelling an easy catch off Borthwick, with the Surrey opener then pulling his next ball for six. Steel continued the assault and capitalised on an ailing Durham attack to reach his fifty from 55 balls, including seven boundaries.Patel followed his team-mate to a half-century to up the ante, ending the game with a massive six over long-on to canter over the line with 21 overs to spare.

Paul Pogba to Norwich City?! Ex-Man Utd star urged to consider shock Championship transfer as Premier League winner warns he may have to 'drop down' a level after doping ban

Ex-Manchester United star Paul Pogba has been urged to consider a shock transfer to Championship side Norwich by Premier League winner Chris Sutton.

Initially handed a four-year suspension for failing a doping test, Pogba saw his ban reduced to 18 months in October after a partially successful appeal to The Court of Arbitration for Sport. The ex-Manchester United and Juventus star saw his ban end in March, and is now on the lookout for his next club.

Pogba has not featured in a professional match since September 2023, when the positive test during his time at Juventus triggered a long period on the sidelines. Now 32 years old, the midfielder has missed nearly two full seasons of football, a span that has understandably affected both his physical condition and market value. However, the World Cup winner now appears to be motivated once again and eager to step back onto the field – though he has yet to secure a deal with a new club.

WHAT SUTTON SAID

Amid speculation about where Pogba could land next, former Chelsea and Blackburn striker turned pundit Chris Sutton has offered a surprising suggestion: a move to Norwich City in the Championship. Speaking candidly about the midfielder’s options in an interview with , Sutton said: "I'd love to see Paul Pogba at Norwich City. Do I think his career is over? Well, he'd be a little fish in a big pond if he came to Norwich.

"I've got to say in truth, in recent seasons, he had had a doping issue, didn't he? So I think he missed a large chunk of football recently, and I think at his age that's really difficult when you're out for that long to come back and hit the heights which he once did."

He added: "He's such a talented player but I think he may believe he can still play at the highest level. I think that it would be really difficult for him to come back after so long. So he'll just have to drop down a little bit and still play at a high level with Norwich City at Carrow Road."

For now, Pogba remains a free agent, waiting for the right opportunity to return to football. With the summer transfer window approaching, clubs across Europe and beyond will no doubt weigh up whether the risk of signing him is worth the potential reward. Whether or not he takes Sutton’s advice remains to be seen – but one thing is clear: Pogba is not ready to call time on his career just yet.

Newcastle send high-ranking scout to watch "unplayable" £45,000-a-week star

Newcastle United sent a high-ranking scout to watch an “unplayable” Premier League player in action earlier this week, according to a promising transfer update.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies are absolutely flying at the moment, finding themselves in their most imperious run of form during Eddie Howe’s entire tenure as manager.

That’s not to say that new signings wouldn’t be welcomed at Newcastle in the January transfer window, however, with Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo continuing to be linked with a move to St James’ Park. He scored in his side’s 2-2 draw away to Chelsea in midweek, taking his tally to six goals in the Premier League this season.

Antoine Semenyo scores for Bournemouth

Zion Suzuki is also reportedly considered a transfer target for the Magpies, with the Parma goalkeeper seen as an alternative option to James Trafford between the sticks. Only 22 years of age, the Japanese youngster has made 19 Serie A starts for his current club this season.

Newcastle have even been linked with an audacious move for Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, although a move to Paris Saint-Germain now looks highly likely this month, with a medical at the Ligue 1 giants even thought to be taking place.

Newcastle send Nickson to watch "unplayable" ace

According to The Chronicle‘s Lee Ryder, Newcastle sent chief scout Steve Nickson to watch Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo in action against Manchester City on Tuesday night, as they drew 2-2 at home to the Premier League champions.

Ryder says that the fact that he was present in midweek is a “positive sign ahead of the summer”, with the wide man potentially considered a primary target, as they look to sign a top-quality right-sided player. The Bees want £50m for his services, but they aren’t entertaining offers in January.

Bryan Mbeumo celebrates for Brentford

At this point, it really does feel like Mbeumo is a major target for Newcastle in the summer, and it’s no shock that they seemingly rate him so highly. The £45,000-a-week Cameroonian is enjoying a fantastic season for Brentford, scoring 13 goals in 21 appearances in the league, with Thomas Frank describing him as “unplayable”.

His manager has been an admirer for some time, also saying of him back in 2022: “It’s brilliant I must say. He’s been brilliant for us this year in the Premier League. He came back from a minor injury, we knew that he wanted to play ready for Tuesday. And three quality finishes, very composed.”

Newcastle feel so close to having such a complete team under Howe, with the midfield perfectly balanced and the likes of Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak excelling in attack. While Jacob Murphy is also in superb form on the right flank, a superior replacement to him needs to be found moving forward, filling the void left by the departing Miguel Almiron at the same time.

Howe could sign right-sided Gordon at Newcastle in £50m "unreal talent"

Newcastle are prepared to spend this winter as Eddie Howe targets greatness.

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 17, 2025

Semenyo is a great option for Newcastle, but Mbeumo should be seen as the standout choice, providing such consistent end product from his right wing role, and at 25, he still has many years ahead of him.
