Sam Billings, Daniel Bell-Drummond fifties help Kent to victory over Birmingham Bears

Half-centuries to Sam Billings and Daniel Bell-Drummond helped Kent to a 21-run victory against Birmingham Bears, meaning that Finals Day will be an all-southern affair for the first time in Blast history.Billings, Kent’s captain, was playing only his fourth match for the county this season and termed his fiercest critics “deluded” as he reached his first Finals Day after three previous quarter-final defeats.”It means everything,” he said. “This has always been our hurdle to get over. I haven’t been around as much as I would have liked due to England stuff and getting Covid. I was injured a couple of years ago so it’s been a pretty weird couple of years. To be back here playing cricket with this team, it means so much. I’ve been at the club since I was eight. People don’t think I care, I think they’re deluded to be honest.”Chris Woakes’ return to competitive action after seven weeks was a lift for Birmingham – and England – and the early stages of the match suggested that he was going to steal the show. In his first over, he dismissed Zak Crawley and had Joe Denly dropped at slip with a delivery that the England selectors will no doubt hope he can replicate if selected at the Oval in a week’s time. Three runs and a wicket off his first over, but that was as good as it was going to get for Woakes, and as it turned out, Birmingham.Kent’s batting line-up is exceptional, comprising a top four of Crawley, Bell-Drummond, Denly and Billings, and on Friday night it was Bell-Drummond and Billings who led the way.Just one boundary had come off the first four overs before the return of Danny Briggs to the attack prompted Bell-Drummond to dump him over square leg for consecutive sixes. However, just as Kent seemed to be wresting control of the contest, Tim Bresnan had Denly caught on the square-leg boundary to tip the momentum slightly back into Birmingham’s favour as the Powerplay ended with the score 46 for 2.With the bounce making players look rushed, early, late, or just uncomfortable, Bell-Drummond was at ease. He struck three of Kent’s five sixes with two sweeps off Briggs and one scarcely believable sweep off Woakes, a normal, 85mph length delivery, slog-swept over midwicket.Related

However, much to the disappointment of non-Birmingham supporters, Bell-Drummond’s innings came to an end in bizarre fashion. Jake Lintott bowled to Billings, who crashed a straight drive back into the base of the non-striker’s stumps where it stopped almost stock still. As Bell-Drummond took a pace down the wicket looking for a run that didn’t exist, Lintott pounced on the ball with one hand before lunging with the other outstretched to pull the two stumps that remained standing out of the ground. The responsibility for Kent’s innings at that point transferred to Billings and he accelerated well to turn 23 off 22 into 56 off 37.On the whole, it was a bizarre first innings. Birmingham bowled well, with Bresnan – who took 4 for 26 – and Craig Miles in particular managing to force the issue against a Kent line-up that folded apart from Bell-Drummond and Billings. But the Bears fielded poorly. Four chances were missed as Denly was dropped first-ball, Briggs missed a run-out, Michael Burgess missed a crucial stumping off Billings and Chris Benjamin had a chance at a spectacular catch on the boundary that went down. Combined with the fact that their key wicket of the innings came through a large slice of fortune and the overall opinion at the halfway stage was one of a shoulder shrug.Birmingham’s reply was greeted with the sound of Billings barking support to his bowlers.”Highest dot-ball percentage in the comp this lad!”, he yelled about Bears opener Adam Hose. Sure enough the dot-balls started coming. Just three runs came off the first over, four off the second, eight off the third, but so too a wicket, Hose, stumped for eight. At 15 for 1 off three overs, 162 was looking alright. The stumping, however, was tinged with controversy. The ball appeared to spill from Billings’ hands upon contact with the stumps. Given that Hose was well out of his ground when the bails were broken, the square-leg umpire simply nodded in agreement that indeed Hose was out and that was that. It was only upon replay where some questions were raised. As the innings continued, the slightly sticky nature of the pitch struck again as Benjamin fell to a Matt Milnes length ball that slightly stopped on him and which he spooned straight back to the bowler. Milnes launched the ball into the night sky with a yell that told of the importance of the moment. Benjamin, having scooped the first ball of his innings for four, appeared to be in the mood, but his departure saw Birmingham finish the Powerplay at 40 for 2 and Kent’s 162 was still looking alright, just.Qais Ahmad entered the attack and immediately took the wicket of Robert Yates. “We like this match-up!”, yelled Billings moments before the ball had crashed into the stumps.Soon after, Jack Leaning’s occasional offspin took the vital wicket of Sam Hain, who was struck plumb in front, before a rank full toss was missed completely by Will Rhodes and clipped leg stump. At that point, even Billings was stunned into silence. The six-to-ten-over period had seen a Birmingham capitulation which continued into the eleventh as Burgess hit another full toss to cow corner. Between innings, Bresnan had quipped that the best delivery on this surface was the “pie”. Not only had he turned out to be correct, but he was now at the crease alongside Woakes needing 12 runs an over.Despite a period of slight recovery, the four wickets that fell for 11 runs had effectively ended the contest. Had it not been for a late flourish of 41 off 20 from Lintott, the last rites arguably should have been read out at the moment Woakes was caught at long-on off the bowling of Milnes.Kent will play Sussex in the semi-finals at Edgbaston on September 18 and Hampshire will face Somerset ahead of the final.

Class of '92-owned Salford City were the original Wrexham – now Man Utd legends are back chasing promotion and eyeing epic Man City FA Cup upset

The club backed by Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs et al blazed a trail for investment in non-league football and are set for their biggest game yet

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took non-league football into the mainstream with 'Welcome to Wrexham' but they were not the first celebrities to look at the earthy surroundings of the amateur game and think it would make for great television.

It has been over a decade since a group of Manchester United legends took over Salford City with the grand ambition of taking them all the way through the English football pyramid to the Premier League. That motivation also attracted McElhenney – who was fascinated with the concept of promotion and relegation as it does not exist in major US sports – to Wrexham and he and Reynolds are well on their way to achieving that objective as they chase a third successive promotion this season.

But Salford blazed an even longer trail before them and were ruthlessly effective in their goal. With backing from the 'Class of 92' consortium of Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes plus billionaire Peter Lim, the Ammies (so-called as the club used to be known as Salford Amateurs) won four promotions in five seasons, reaching the English Football League in 2019 with promotion to League Two. They documented their travails in the series 'Class of 92 – Out of Their League' and later 'Class of '92 – Full Time' on .

The EFL was not quite the paradise they had dreamed of, though, and while Wrexham have gone from strength to strength since their 2020 takeover, Salford have stayed still, remaining in League Two and coming dangerously close to relegation last year. More crucially, they slipped out of the wider conversation, losing relevance as they were leapfrogged in the divisions by Wrexham as well as neighbours Stockport County.

But Salford are on the rise again, winning six games in a row to move into contention for promotion to League One to potentially join Wrexham and Stockport. And they are about to get the nation's attention once more as they prepare for the biggest game of their history, Saturday's FA Cup tie against Manchester City, the scourge of their United-supporting owners.

    Out of their league

While McElheneny and Reynolds were working with a well-established historic club – the third oldest in the world – which had previously competed in Europe and averaged attendances of 5,000 the year before the takeover, Neville and co. were starting from a far lower base. The season before the takeover by the Class of '92, little more than 100 people would attend Salford games at Moor Lane and it was common for fans to bring their dogs along, with one border collie repeatedly getting in trouble for running on to the pitch.

The club competed in the eighth tier of English football, was run by volunteers and its stadium was falling apart, with toilets barely fit for use. In the first season of 'Out of Their League', the new owners are dismayed by the attitude of the two head coaches, who take holidays during the pre-season campaign, and of many of their players, who turn up late for training. Phil Neville turns up at one session only to learn there are no balls.

But Salford had money like no other club in non-league and were able to attract top-quality players such as striker Gareth Seddon, who left Chester City and dropped down four divisions to join them, and Danny Webber, a former Manchester United youth trainee who had played in the Premier League for Portsmouth and Sheffield United.

    'Getting what they want'

Salford won promotion in their first season under the new ownership as they stormed to the league title and in their next campaign were promoted to the National League North, via the play-offs. They became a professional club at the start of the 2016-17 campaign but missed out on promotion in the play-offs. They were crowned champions the following year and needed just one crack at the National League, earning promotion to the EFL with a rampant 3-0 win over AFC Flyde in the play-off final at Wembley.

But their rise was not seen as a fairy-tale, both within and outside the club. Accrington Stanley owner Andy Holt accused Neville of "stealing a place in the EFL" after buying Aberdeen striker Adam Rooney in 2018 and offering him £4,000 ($4,870) per week. That summer Salford signed four players from League One and had recruited manager Graham Alexander from the same division.

Some of Salford's long-running fans were also angry by the change in identity under the new owners, who revamped the club's badge and controversially changed their shirt colours from tangerine orange to red in an obvious nod to United. Neville and co. were likened to the unpopular Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan, who at a similar time changed the Welsh side's colours from blue to red (they reverted to blue in 2015).

"They might be legends for Manchester United and great players and all the rest of it. But these days these players are hard-nosed businessmen," fan and local reporter Stephen Kingston said in the 'Out of their League' series. "You expect it at a Premier League club when you get some bloody Russian Oligarch in or someone like that. You don't expect it at little Salford City. As far as I'm concerned it's arrogance, it's Premiership arrogance. They are used to getting what they want."

    Finding their level

The owners haven't quite got what they wanted since reaching League Two, however. In 2015 Neville targetted reaching the Championship by 2029 while Giggs spoke of playing in the Premier League one day in front of 25,000 fans. Salford's profile made them easily the biggest team in the lower leagues and their early attendances – often exceeding 2,000 – were also among the largest for their level. But that has changed since reaching League Two.

Their average attendance of 2,800 is the third-lowest in the division and they haven't been able to generate much revenue, which is a problem when they have to comply with the league's Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP), which prevents clubs spending more than 60 percent of their revenue. Salford's latest accounts show a loss of £4 million ($4.8m).

The club have also struggled to progress off the pitch. Although they have radically transformed their ground, which was reopened in 2017 as the Peninsular Stadium, raising capacity from 1,600 to 5,000, their growth has been well below what the owners wanted. There is an obvious reason for that: United are on their doorstep and although they are technically located in Trafford, they are to many the true club of Salford.

    Smaller than their neighbours

Football fans in the north west of England are spoilt for choice if they want to watch live football beyond the bright lights of United and City. Despite the prestige of their legendary United players, Salford cannot compete with the history of many of their neighbours. Stockport, Oldham Athletic and Rochdale all attract more fans per week. And unlike McElhenney and Reynolds, they have not been able to attract new fans to the sport.

"Wrexham have got the Hollywood owners, that's great. It works for them, but it doesn't really work for us in the demographic we're in," Nicky Butt, the club's CEO, told in 2023. "We want to be different. We want to be doing it our way, really.

"We knew what we had to do to get the spotlight on Salford. We're not daft. We knew what we had to do: we had to get a documentary, we had to get the hype up, get the fans up and try and move forward with that. We did that and we want to become our own identity. We want to be Salford. We want to be a hard-working, working-class team for the people. We want to be different."

West Ham blown away by £67k-p/w Antonio replacement they want to sign ASAP

West Ham United are on the hunt for attacking reinforcements and have identified one potential new face to add to Julen Lopetegui’s ranks in 2025, according to a report.

Goal-shy West Ham leave Lopetegui under early pressure

Six games into the Premier League season, West Ham have scored just six goals, the same number as 20th placed Wolves. After heavy spending over the summer, they have just one win to show for it, while Julen Lopetegui became the first West Ham boss in Premier League history to lose each of his first three home games.

None of his new signings have got their first goal in West Ham colours either, with Niclas Fullkrug, Crysencio Summerville and Carlos Soler all toiling without success.

Crysencio Summerville for West Ham

It means that the Hammers are 14th in the Premier League with five points to their name, and will be hoping to see a large improvement in their next run of games, which include clashes with Ipswich Town, Nottingham Forest and Everton.

But clearly there is a problem at the top of the pitch, with Michail Antonio yet to open his account for the season and Danny Ings largely used from the substitutes bench, leaving the responsibility on Tomas Soucek to score the equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Brentford over the weekend.

At 31-years-old, £25m addition Fullkrug is not a long-term solution to their issues, and they remain on the hunt for a man to lead their line and finally take the mantle from Antonio, who has done so for the last decade but now looks well beyond his best. Now, they may have identified their man.

West Ham chasing Valencia star

That comes as Caught Offside claim that the Hammers are set to rival Aston Villa for the signature of highly-rated Valencia striker Hugo Duro in the upcoming transfer windows. The Spaniard, who has scored twice this season, is still just 24-years-old and is likely to improve in the years to come.

Lost the ball every 3.4 touches: Lopetegui must now drop 5/10 West Ham star

He lost the ball every 3.4 touches

And that has caught the attention of both Aston Villa and West Ham, with the report claiming that the pair are “in a fierce battle” for his signature. The striker still has four years left to run on his £67,000 a week deal in Spain but is thought to be available for between €25m and €30m (£20.8m and £25m).

It is added that “manager Julen Lopetegui sees Duro’s energy and goal-scoring ability as a major potential asset” for the Hammers, who have looked docile in the final third, while they “have been impressed by the Spanish striker’s talents” and “are keen” to “sign him in the near future”.

It remains to be seen whether a transfer ultimately materialises, but following their failure to land Jhon Duran from Aston Villa over the summer there is clearly work still to be done on the Hammers frontline, and early form suggests that it is an issue that will need to be remedied sooner rather than later.

INEOS pondering move for "amazing" Onana understudy after sending GK scout

Turning their attention towards the transfer market, INEOS are now reportedly pondering a move to sign a goalkeeping understudy for Manchester United No 1 Andre Onana after sending their scouting team to watch a potential target in action.

Man Utd transfer news

Despite strengthening well during the summer window, the Red Devils are seemingly far from done when it comes to transfer business, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to transform Manchester United back into Premier League title contenders.

Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro all arrived in the summer in the first step towards that rebuild, though it is clearly early days given the team’s slow start to the campaign.

Man Utd could revive Bruno Fernandes by starting "monster" £85k-p/w star

Since the window closed, Manchester United have been linked with moves for the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Jarrad Branthwaite – two stars who would undoubtedly provide Erik ten Hag with welcome upgrades in their respective positions. Branthwaite would prove to be particularly key, with his potential arrival likely forming a partnership between himself and De Ligt.

Meanwhile, behind a new-look backline, those at Old Trafford have reportedly set their sights on a future star between the sticks. According to Alan Nixon on Patreon, INEOS are now pondering a move to sign Anthony Patterson from Sunderland after sending goalkeeper scout Tony Coton to watch their reported target in action.

Patterson was linked with the likes of Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer before ultimately staying put at the Stadium of Light. Since playing a part in the Black Cats’ excellent start to the campaign, helping them into an early Championship promotion race, Patterson has seemingly attracted the interest of Manchester United.

Now 24 years old, the chance to compete for a place against 28-year-old Onana would be coming at an ideal time for Patterson, making 2025’s transfer business all the more interesting.

"Amazing" Patterson is one to watch

With Manchester United’s No 2 role apparently up for grabs, Patterson is one to watch in the January transfer window and next summer’s market. The Englishman would be making quite the step up going from the Championship all the way to one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, but lying in wait to take his chance ahead of Onana may just be his best path towards an eventual Three Lions call-up.

A goalkeeper with an impressive save percentage (albeit at a lower level), former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray was previously full of praise for Patterson, saying after his side defeated Queens Park Rangers (via the Sunderland Echo):

“It shouldn’t surprise anyone, he has been amazing all season. I genuinely think now when they get a penalty that he is probably going to save it. I’m not stood there thinking, ‘oh god, it’s 1-1’. That was an amazing save – he filled the goal with his body and kicked it away.

It’s the type of heroics that can make all the difference and the type that Manchester United could yet welcome when the time comes in 2025.

Major update on Gary O’Neil’s Wolves future before Aston Villa clash

An update on the future of Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has been provided ahead of his side’s Midlands derby with Aston Villa after a tricky start to the Premier League season.

Wolves continue poor start to the season

Midweek Carabao Cup action did nothing to lift spirits around Molineux as Gary O’Neil’s side fell to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of fellow Premier League side Brighton at the AMEX stadium.

It means that Wolves have won just one game so far this season, and are yet to taste success in the Premier League. A defeat against Arsenal on the opening day was followed by a thrashing at the hands of Chelsea, before they picked up their sole point of the campaign so far in a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

With games against Liverpool, Aston Villa, Man City and Brighton all in their next five games, it could prove difficult to find any sort of form between now and November, which could see them dragged into a relegation dog-fight.

Wolves’ next five Premier League games

Aston Villa (A)

Liverpool (H)

Manchester City (H)

Brighton (A)

O’Neil bemoaned the defeat in midweek, admitting that he was beginning to sound “like a broken record”.

“Unfortunately, I have to sit here again and talk to you about a defeat but one that probably shouldn’t have been a defeat”, the Wolves boss explained. “We made a lot of changes and the team still found a way to function, to function fairly well.

“The 3-1 sucker punch was a tough one because I think everyone in the stadium felt we were very, very much on top at the point and it feels a bit this way at the moment, which makes these chats with you guys (the media) a bit awkward because you don’t want to sound like a broken record. We did enough today to get a result out of the game and we found a way not to again, so it’s a similar theme.”

Now, an update on the manager’s future has been provided ahead of his pre match press conference on Friday, which will take place this afternoon.

Update on O'Neil's Wolves role

That comes as GiveMeSport claim that despite the poor form, O’Neil’s job remains completely safe at Molineux. They explain that the Wolves boss is “under no pressure in terms of losing his job whatsoever”, and they add that is unlikely to change in the coming weeks either.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

Given the tough fixtures ahead, they reveal that “it is likely O’Neil will be judged on games following that period of the campaign”, with the fixture list looking somewhat kinder heading into November and beyond for the Old Gold.

Reported to take home just £1.5m per year, O’Neil is one of the lowest paid managers in the Premier League, which means that should Wolves decide to pull the trigger it should not have too much impact on their finances.

Liverpool chiefs now think Nicolò Barella is the perfect profile for Slot

Following their failure to sign Martin Zubimendi in the summer, Liverpool chiefs now reportedly believe that one of the most coveted midfielders in European football is the perfect profile for Arne Slot’s side.

Liverpool transfer news

To Slot’s credit, he’s turned to Ryan Gravenberch since missing out on Zubimendi with the Dutch midfielder playing his best football since arriving from Bayern Munich last summer. No longer a bit-part player, Gravenberch has arguably been the standout player in the early stages of the new manager’s tenure, even dictating play at San Siro as Liverpool came from behind to defeat AC Milan.

Given just how busy Liverpool’s schedule is, however, there will come a time when they will need to hand Gravenberch a rest and turn to alternative options, which is where issues could be presented to Slot to solve.

Without Gravenberch, the manager’s next option is likely to be Wataru Endo, who represents a more combative midfielder to the controller type that Slot prefers. Losing that element at the heart of his side in certain games will undoubtedly prove costly and should be the first problem that those at Anfield solve in 2025 using one particular player.

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool chiefs now believe that Nicolo Barella is the perfect profile for Slot and are keeping tabs on one of the most in-demand midfielders in Europe ahead of next summer.

Liverpool chiefs eyeing move to sign "unique" £30k-p/w defender for Slot

The Reds are keen to bolster their backline next summer.

ByBen Browning Sep 21, 2024

The Reds are not alone in their interest, with Real Madrid and Manchester City also eyeing moves to sign the Italian to form quite the race for his signature when next summer arrives. If Liverpool want to become serious title contenders again, then signing such a player to work alongside Gravenberch would certainly go a long way.

Barella would complete Liverpool's midfield

It’s taken longer than expected thanks to their unsuccessful and tiresome search for a defensive midfielder, but after adapting by using their current options, Liverpool could now complete their midfield with the addition of Barella next summer. The 27-year-old would join Italy teammate Federico Chiesa and transform the Reds back into title contenders in an instant under Slot.

Compared to Gravenberch, it’s clear that the Inter Milan star suits the profile of midfielder that Slot wants in his side whilst offering the experience that the Dutchman lacks. Offering the best of both worlds, Barella shares similar traits whilst representing an option who has performed on Europe’s biggest stages.

Add a player like Barella next to him and the Liverpool star could be unstoppable for years to come at Anfield.

Batting coach Das backs 'world-class' Mandhana to come good

He also confirmed that Harmanpreet Kaur’s thumb injury would keep her out of the second ODI

Annesha Ghosh23-Sep-2021Shiv Sunder Das, the India Women batting coach, believes scoring at least 60 runs in the powerplay could in some measure help address the team’s inability to post competitive totals in ODIs. He echoed captain Mithali Raj when emphasising the role of openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma in achieving that goal, and backed Mandhana’s “ability to get runs for us”.Related

“We have been working on that aspect of the game,” Das said of India’s innings-construction plans ahead of the second ODI. “We have blocked 10 overs each for each batter. We are looking at a good start to start with and, obviously, in the middle overs we are looking at an average of five runs [per over] and at the end we’re looking at six runs per over. Basically, that is our batting plan.”In the nets we have tried a few things. It’s about the individual – how they react to the game, especially at the start of the innings. We have Shafali Verma and Smriti, so basically we are looking at a good start. Obviously, [in the] last few games we didn’t have a good start, [but] I am very positive as the batting coach. They’ll put up a good start and once you put up a good start of about 60-70 runs in 10 overs, that momentum you can carry into the middle overs. You will see the difference tomorrow.”In their last 10 ODIs, India have only twice scored more than 50 in the first 10 overs, with a best score of 57 for 1 in the third ODI against South Africa in March. On three occasions, they’ve failed to reach the 40 mark within the first 10 overs. After India’s crushing nine-wicket defeat in the opening ODI on Tuesday, Raj had said she expected the experienced Mandhana to take the lead and contribute more runs at the top of the order. She called for the openers to put on at least 50 to alleviate the pressure on the middle order. Das, for his part, was hopeful Mandhana would be able to live up to her role in the forthcoming ODIs.”I had a one-to-one chat with her [Mandhana] and in the last two sessions we have worked hard in the nets,” Das said. “We have addressed a few issues and, as you know, she is a world-class player, and we are backing her ability to get runs for us. Definitely we will see the difference in tomorrow’s game.”Das also confirmed that India will be without their designated vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur for a second straight match given she is yet to recover from the thumb injury she sustained at training last week.Harmanpreet Kaur’s thumb injury will keep her out of the second ODI as well•Annesha Ghosh/ESPNcricinfoAppointed India’s batting coach on a tour-by-tour basis for the away series against England in June, Das was one of the few members on the coaching staff to be retained for the Australia assignment. A former Test opener, he previously worked with the India Women A team, including during the 2020 quadrangular series in Patna, and was roped in for the England series – which, like the ongoing tour, featured a standalone Test – primarily owing to his experience as a Test and first-class cricketer.Strike rotation, he said, remains a primary area of concern for the India line-up. He also stressed that a largely young and inexperienced line-up would need a little more time to get used to Australian conditions.”The first ten overs… we have addressed that issue,” Das said. “The running between the wickets is an area we are still working on. It’s a work in progress; you have to see there are a few young batters in our side and it’s a good side. You have to give them some time. Once they get used to these conditions, I think they will definitely fire.”We have been working on a few aspects of the rotation of strike. Basically we’re focused on their strengths. Now, because it’s in [the middle of] the series, we have identified a few areas. It’s a work in progress. Definitely in the future series, they’ll definitely come good.”If you see our team, we have a lot of youngsters. Yastika [Bhatia] got an opportunity; she batted well. It’s definitely a new challenge for them. All these wickets – they are good batting wickets, and I hope they’ll perform well tomorrow.”To counter Australia’s short-ball ploy, which reaped the hosts high dividends in the first ODI, Das said India had chalked up plans in their practice sessions, especially against the 18-year-old quick Darcie Brown, who took 4 for 33 on Tuesday. She had accounted for Verma and Deepti Sharma with short-pitched deliveries.”The last two days we had net sessions, particularly because she bowls back-of-the-hand short balls, so we have identified a few areas and all the top-order batters, we have had a plan and I have had a one-to-one chat with them,” Das said. “I think we’ll see the difference in tomorrow’s game.”

He’s set to leave: Leeds can strike gold by selling their big £10m flop

Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League in the summer of 2023 and are still carrying some of the players who did not opt to fight for promotion back from the Championship.

Max Wober spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach before starting the current season on the bench, and is now out through injury.

Meanwhile, Jack Harrison and Rasmus Kristensen are both out on loan for the second season in succession, with Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively.

The 49ers, however, now look set to hit the jackpot by finally cashing in on Jesse Marsch flop Kristensen, amid interest from the Bundesliga outfit.

Latest transfer news on Rasmus Kristensen

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Frankfurt are interested in signing Kristensen on a permanent deal in one of the upcoming transfer windows.

The journalist does not reveal whether they would like to make it happen in January or when his loan officially expires at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Plettenberg adds that Frankfurt have already decided that they want to make his loan a permanent deal and that they are prepared to trigger their option to buy the Denmark international.

It is said to be worth up to €12m (£10m) and this means that the Leeds owners could be set to hit the jackpot by cashing in on the 27-year-old dud for such a fee, given his performances for the club in the Premier League.

Daniel Farke already has Jayden Bogle, Sam Byram, and Isaac Schmidt in his squad to compete for a place at right-back, which means that any sale of the Frankfurt loanee would not disrupt his team at all, whilst bringing more money into the club.

Rasmus Kristensen's form for Leeds

Marsch swooped to sign the defender from his former team RB Salzburg in the summer of 2023 for a reported fee of £10m, which means that the Whites could be about to break even on him.

That is an impressive achievement by the 49ers when you consider how much Kristensen struggled in the Premier League during the 2022/23 campaign, as Leeds were relegated from the division.

The defender reportedly earned around £39k-per-week that term and, speaking to Danish channel TV Midtvest, via the Yorkshire Evening Post, admitted that he is sometimes “embarrassed” and “ashamed” of his wages and the money in football generally, adding that does not do anything “important”.

A noble sentiment but some may have questioned his wages even within the context of football, after his disappointing performances in the top-flight for the Whites.

As you can see in the table above, Kristensen was an unreliable passer, completing just 69% of his attempted passes, and was dribbled past a whopping 34 times in 21 starts.

Attackers found it far too easy to get the better of him in English football, suggesting that he was not suited to the pace and physicality of the country, and that is why the 49ers are now set to hit the jackpot by landing £10m from Frankfurt for him, as his performances for Leeds suggest that his value should have dropped.
