Steven Budlender has also been chosen as the lead independent director
Firdose Moonda23-Jun-2021Lawson Naidoo has been elected the new chair of Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Steven Budlender has been chosen as the lead independent director at the first meeting of the new board. These elections complete the process outlined in the Memorandum of Incorporation (MoI) that the CSA established under the minister-appointed interim board. One of the key factors was in ensuring good governance through a majority independent board with an independent chairperson.Naidoo is the executive secretary of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (CASAC) and a founding partner of the Paternoster Group, a political risk consultancy. Budlender is an advocate.Related

“I thank my fellow Board members for the confidence they have shown in electing me as chairperson,” Naidoo said. “We are all well aware of the challenges facing us in making CSA a world-class sporting organization both on and off the field of play.”These elections mean former CSA president Norman Arendse, who was named on the new board last week, has not been given a leadership position beyond his status as a board member.Among the new board’s most pressing tasks will be to wind up the disciplinary proceedings against former acting CEO Kugandrie Govender and appoint a new CEO.
SLC commits to making evaluation marks available to each player upon UK return

Sri Lanka’s men’s cricketers have agreed to tour England uncontracted, after Sri Lanka Cricket committed to revealing specifics about the player evaluations that form the basis of the board’s new proposed contract scheme. The cricketers have long contended that the methodology by which they had been placed in various payment categories under the proposed scheme were not transparent. Now, SLC appears to have formally promised to make player evaluation marks available to each player when they return from the tour of England.”This is the transparency the players had been requesting from the outset,” the players’ lawyer Nishan Premathiratne told ESPNcricinfo. “They will play this tour without signing any contract. They have signed a voluntary declaration, but there’s nothing there about player remuneration. They have always been committed to playing for Sri Lanka.”However, ESPNcricinfo understands that the technical committee that devised the new contracts scheme had never been opposed to making the players’ individual evaluations available to each player. This is the first time SLC is officially committing to sharing that information with the players, though.Related

New SLC player contracts: Lower base salaries
The technical committee is also unmoved on another of the players’ requests: that performance and fitness be the only two categories on which they are evaluated for contracts purposes. As per the proposed new scheme, performance and fitness are the two main criteria, together comprising 70% of each player’s overall mark (50% for performance, 20% for fitness). But the proposed scheme also accords 10% each for leadership, professionalism, and future potential/adaptability.In any case, the larger issue around contracts remains unsolved – the players likely to make further requests even after they receive their individual evaluation scores upon returning from England. For now, though, a crisis has been averted, and Sri Lanka will fulfil their tour obligations.Sri Lanka are due to leave for the tour on Tuesday evening. Following quarantine, they will play three T20 internationals and three ODIs against England – the first of those games scheduled for June 23.
It's early days yet, but West Ham United are showing signs of promise under the leadership of new head coach Julen Lopetegui, who defeated Crystal Palace in his second Premier League match in charge.
West Ham fizzled out under David Moyes last season and have backed the freshly-arrived Spaniard to the hilt, spending over £120m on first-team signings.
There may yet be room for one or two more, however, and with James Ward-Prowse reportedly on Nottingham Forest's shortlist as the window enters its final week, an exciting midfielder edges closer to east London.
West Ham transfer news
According to Sky Sports' Dharmeth Sheth, West Ham are locked in negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain for versatile midfielder Carlos Soler, with "talks ongoing over the fee and structure".
PSG midfielder Carlos Soler
Last week, Fabrizio Romano claimed that the Hammers are "leading the race", but that other clubs are also keen. PSG want a sum in the ballpark of £20m to let the 27-year-old go but are willing to discuss a loan package.
Where Carlos Soler would fit into West Ham's team
A key point: Lopetegui's tactical set-up is flexible and would benefit from another midfielder who operates across a range of areas. Soler, indeed, has actually been hailed as the "complete midfielder" by former Valencia star Curro Torres.

The Spaniard is one of the most fluid midfielders around, and he could benefit from jumping across the Channel and plying his trade somewhere anew, having only started 26 Ligue 1 fixtures since signing for PSG from Spanish side Valencia for €20m (about £17m) in 2022.
Still, he's potent and would offer an extra goalscoring dimension to ensure that Lopetegui's Irons stray away from becoming one-dimensional, predictable.
PSG player Carlos Soler
Indeed, as per FBref, Soler ranks among the top 11% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 19% for assists, the top 18% for passes attempted and the top 10% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.
A ball-playing specialist with one eye for goal and the other for an assist, Soler would be a credit to his new-look West Ham team, perhaps even proving to displace in-form Tomas Soucek in the starting line-up, on the whole.
Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen celebrate for West Ham
That might be an unpopular take: Soucek is one of those clutch players that always seems to find circles of space in the right moments, an innate predatory instinct if you will.
The Czech Republic international, 29, netted ten times over all competitions last year and has been praised in the past as "one of those players who turns up in big moments" by pundit Joe Cole.
However, the towering 6 foot 3 titan has also lost 60% of his ground duels this season and could find that his role is performed to a better standard through Soler, even if he has started the new term in goalscoring touch.
Soler is silky and inventive, and while he has an eye for goal, he can also influence play from deep and dictate passing passages. Should West Ham go ahead with the move, it might prove to be bad news for Soucek, who would find himself playing more of a bit-part role.
Though, really, would that be the worst thing in the world? Lopetegui would gain a dynamic new option to better implement his tactical style, while Soucek would still earn opportunities off the bench to inflict damage on United's opposition.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Amid uncertainty over the England international's future, manager Slot issued a warning towards the Spanish champions as he cited club legend Steven Gerrard's example. In 2010, the then-Real boss Jose Mourinho tried to sign the midfielder, however, Gerrard rejected the offer to stay back at his boyhood club.
WHAT ARNE SLOT SAID
Speaking to reporters, the Dutch coach said: "There was one player (Gerrard) they would have really loved to have but he didn’t come. You know him better than me. So it has happened."

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?
The Merseyside club will be back in action on Sunday as they play their first match of the New Year against rivals Manchester United at Anfield.
Everton will need to improve, and swiftly, if they are to avoid yet another Premier League relegation scrap this season.
Sean Dyche has seen his side lose all three of their league matches so far. With a clash against Aston Villa this weekend, the Goodison Park side will need to be excellent to secure a positive result.
Players such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin will need to step up in order to fire the club to their first win of the campaign.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s statistics this season
The striker has failed to score more than seven league goals over the previous three full seasons. Last term, he found the back of the net on just eight occasions across 38 matches.
While the Toffees have lost all their league matches, Calvert-Lewin does have a goal and an assist to his name thus far.
He has also created a big chance, averaging a shot per game while winning seven total duels per game in the top flight. Some more of this in the coming weeks could perhaps see the club finally gain their first points.
Dyche doesn’t have too many options to call upon, that’s for sure. There is a player who left Everton in December 2022 currently starring for his club side, while even outscoring Calvert-Lewin in the process…
What Salomon Rondon has done after leaving Everton
The Venezuelan centre-forward signed for the club in the summer of 2021, going on to score just three goals that term as the club narrowly escaped relegation.
He left Goodison in December 2022 after terminating his contract, failing to make an impression during his spell at the club. Since then, however, the veteran striker has been in excellent form.

35 appearances for River Plate yielded ten goals, but it is for his current team where he really hit the ground running.
Rondon played 21 league matches for Pachuca during 2023/24, scoring ten goals, while impressing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, netting nine times in just seven matches.
In the latter competition, the 34-year-old averaged 3.9 shots per game, averaged 1.7 key passes and succeeded with 60% of his dribble attempts, proving it wasn’t just in front of goal where he was effective.
His 20 goals in all competitions last season dwarfed the eight that Calvert-Lewin scored in the same time period.
Rondon failed to hit his previous Premier League highs during his spell on Merseyside, but there is no doubt he has proved his quality since leaving.
He even netted three goals in the 2024 Copa América, leading Venezuela to the quarter-finals for just the fifth time in their history, scoring against the likes of Mexico, Jamacia and Canada in the United States.
Calvert-Lewin is already off the mark this season, but if he wishes to drag the club away from the drop zone, he will need to vastly improve in the coming weeks.
Everton must regret selling £59m star who's been outscoring Gordon
He’s gone from strength to strength since leaving.
Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe by 220 runs in the one-off Test in Harare, the visitors’ patience paying off after the hosts’ nightwatchman Donald Tiripano led a rearguard action with his 144-ball 52. Zimbabwe’s last three wickets took up 34.4 overs, but they had lost four wickets in 19 balls in the day’s first session. The win – Bangladesh’s fifth overseas victory overall – capped off a fine farewell for Player of the Match Mahmudullah, who announced his retirement from Tests on the third day of the game. At the start of play on Sunday, Bangladesh gave Mahmudullah a guard of honour, and captain Mominul Haque let him lead the team out onto the ground. After being a last-minute inclusion in the XI, Mahmudullah rescued Bangladesh with a first-innings 150 at No 8. He added 191 runs for the ninth wicket with Taskin Ahmed, who made a career-best 75.Related

Mahmudullah makes shock decision to retire from Test cricket
The eventuality of the Test was decided when Mehidy Hasan Miraz removed Richard Ngarava to finish with match figures of 9 for 148, the best returns in an overseas Test by a Bangladeshi bowler. Taskin also took his career-best innings figures of 4 for 82 in Bangladesh’s second dig.The win – Bangladesh’s first one on foreign soil since 2017, having lost ten out of eleven of those matches – didn’t come easy for them on the final day. Dion Myers and Tiripano put up a resistance that lasted 17 overs, but the visitors bounced back with a four-wicket burst that signaled a swifter finish to the Test match.Tiripano found willing allies in Victor Nyauchi and Blessing Muzarabani, who had a hilarious duel with Taskin, giving back the little jig that the Bangladeshi had done on him on the second day. Nuyachi was caught at slip, fending a Taskin bouncer while Ebadot Hossain removed Tiripano for his only wicket in the match.Bangladesh could have finished matters much earlier had they held on to three chances. Myers was dropped by wicketkeeper Liton Das and first-slip Shakib off Miraz’s bowling, while Taskin grassed Tiripano off his own bowling. Shakib dropped a second chance when Muzarabani edged to him off Miraz.Miraz, however, eventually removed Myers and Timycen Maruma in the same over before Taskin took the wickets of Roy Kaia and Regis Chakabva as Zimbabwe’s middle-order collapsed.Bangladesh had staged a spirited fightback in the first innings, before Shakib and Miraz ensured a big lead with their combined nine-wicket haul. The visitors batted better in the second innings, with Shadman Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto struck hundreds.Brendan Taylor made 81 and 92 in a line-up that had none of their experienced batters. Takudzwanashe Kaitano, one of three debutants, made 87 in the first innings. The visitors would have a few things to work on, most notably their bowling against the Zimbabwean lower order that performed admirably.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers singled out one of his players as being truly underrated following his performance against Rangers.
The Scottish Premiership champions have made an excellent start to the new season, which continued after another convincing win against arch-rivals Rangers on Sunday. The Hoops looked in control of the tie from the off, and it wasn’t long before their dominance paid off, with them running out 3-0 winners to make it four wins from four.

Pundits react to Celtic beating Rangers
Despite Celtic losing one of their key players during the summer transfer window in Matt O’Riley, the Bhoys had a productive summer, as the club brought in eight players over the course of the last few months, with key areas strengthened.
Brendan Rodgers was keen for his side to have things in place should the club lose one of their better players, and they did just that, as Paulo Bernardo joined the club from Benfica earlier this summer, and they then brought in Arne Engels – two players who will look to replace O’Riley.

The strong summer of business has helped the club make a good start to the season, and that continued on Sunday as the Hoops brushed aside Rangers in emphatic style.
Former Rangers striker Billy Dodds labelled Celtic a "very good team" and one that is playing with confidence after their win on Sunday. Dodds told Sportsound (via BBC Sport): "Celtic are a very good team – they are in such a rich vein of form, and they play with confidence, pace and energy."
Brendan Rodgers.
Meanwhile, another former Rangers striker, Kris Boyd, believes Rangers are miles behind Celtic, as they are better than them all over the pitch. Boyd told Sky Sports: "Forget Celtic. Rangers are miles off. Celtic are better than Rangers all over the pitch."
While these pundits were lauding Celtic, Rodgers was keen to leave praise for a certain individual after his impressive performance against the Gers.
Rodgers sees Celtic player as underrated after Rangers display
Rodgers believes Celtic defender Liam Scales and other players like him may not be the "sexiest of players" because they haven’t been signed for a lot of money, but the manager sees the likes of Scales as invaluable.
Rodgers said about Scales to the BBC: "He had a fantastic season last season, and sometimes the guys that come in that are either Scottish or from Ireland, they might not feel to be the sexiest of players; we might not have signed them for a lot of money, but these guys… I don’t know where we would have been without Liam Scales last year.
"His robustness; he plays games, he hardly ever gets injured, and again, he stood up today."
This praise from Rodgers comes after the defender won every duel he had during the 3-0 win over Rangers. Scales played the full 90 minutes at Parkhead, making five clearances, blocked two shots and made two interceptions.
Furthermore, he won all three of his ground duels that he had in the game, while he also won all five of his aerial duels. Scales had 93 touches of the ball in the 90 minutes, finishing the game with an 88% pass accuracy. He was also given a Sofascore rating of 7.9 for his performance against Rangers, so Rodgers' praise was certainly not undeserved.
Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways in the Premier League after a disappointing defeat in last Sunday’s North London Derby. They secured all three points by beating Brentford 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, despite going 1-0 down thanks to a first-minute Bryan Mbeumo goal.
It was not long before the Lilywhites were back on level terms, however, and it was a moment to rejoice for Dominic Solnake. He got his first goal in a Spurs shirt to draw his side level just seven minutes after Thomas Frank’s side took the lead.
Just 20 minutes after Solanke’s first goal for the club, Ange Postecolgou’s side went into the lead. Welsh winger Brennan Johnson scored his second goal in a week after he got a late winner against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup. James Maddison sealed the win in the 85th minute, with the second and third goals being assisted by captain Son Heung-min.
There were certainly some standout performers from the Lilywhites, not least Maddison, who was impressive aside from his goal.
Maddison’s stats vs. Brentford
England international Maddison was one of the stars of the show for Postecolglou’s side at on Saturday afternoon. As well as his late goal, the 27-year-old pulled the strings in midfield and was also superb out of possession.
His goal was certainly well taken; the Englishman latched onto a pass from his captain, Son, and ran through one-on-one with Mark Flekken, cutely dinking the ball over Brentford’s number one to seal the points for his side.
His stats on Sofascore demonstrate perfectly how well he played. The former Leicester City man had 81 touches of the ball and an 88% pass accuracy.
He created three chances, and won an incredible ten of his 18 ground duels, showing it is not just his ability with the ball that makes him a crucial player for Spurs.
Football London journalist Alasdair Gold was also clearly impressed with Maddison’s efforts. He gave the attacking midfielder a 10/10 rating, claiming it was ‘arguably his best performance in a Spurs shirt’, before explaining how he proved to be a nuisance for the Bees, given he was ‘constantly twisting, turning and creating’.
There is no doubt that Maddison was very impressive, and he was not alone. There was perhaps another player who was just as good against Brentford, Spurs’ number seven Son.
Son’s stats vs. Brentford
The Spurs captain has been in superb form this season and added two assists to the two goals he previously had. The 32-year-old proved to be his side’s difference maker, with his assists providing the goals from which they won the game.
Indeed, his assists were both smart passes. The pass for Johnson’s goal which gave Spurs the lead, he found the Welsh winger in space, who proceeded to drive at the Brentford defence and fire low and hard across the goalkeeper. The pass for Maddison was a smart ball through the legs of Ethan Pinnock; the Spurs number 10 did the rest.
The attacker was given an 8/10 by Gold for his performance against the Bees. He was praised by the Football London journalist, who explained he was ‘always a threat’ at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The stats from Son’s performance also suggest he was impressive. The South Korean had 46 touches, and a pass accuracy of 86%. Impressively, the Spurs skipper made a staggering seven key passes and provided two big chances, to go along with his pair of assists.
