Aston Villa make new approach to sign "incredible" in-demand defender

After failing in their first approach, Aston Villa have reportedly made a second attempt to convince one of their summer targets into a Premier League switch ahead of next season.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have been one of the busiest sides in the transfer market so far this summer, especially in the Premier League. In total, they've welcomed five fresh faces with Amadou Onana reportedly on his way to make it a sixth. The Belgian's arrrival, alongside Ian Maatsen's, stands out amongst the crowd as the most impressive business that Villa have so far completed.

Aston Villa now "closing in" on swoop to sign "highly rated" gem for Emery

He’s one for the future.

With so many incomings, however, departures always seemed likely as those in the Midlands have already seen with the exit of Douglas Luiz to Juventus and as they may see with Moussa Diaby. The former Bayer Leverkusen star has reportedly agreed personal terms with Saudi Pro League club Al Ittihad and could now be on his way out of Villa Park just one year on from arriving.

Moussa Diaby

The winger's exit would undoubtedly deal Unai Emery a frustrating blow this summer, but Villa could at least make up for Diaby's potential departure by reversing the trend of Saudi clubs signing European stars.

According to TEAMtalk, Aston Villa have made a new approach to sign Saud Abdulhamid from Al-Hilal, having already made an initial approach at the start of the transfer window. The right-back reportedly believes that now is the best time to move into European football after impressing in Saudi as a standout defender. Despite approaching Abdulhamid's representatives though, Villa are yet to open negotiations with Al-Hilal.

It could be quite the way to break the trend by luring a player who is regarded as one of the best right-backs in the Saudi Pro League to English football after the likes of Ruben Neves and now perhaps even Diaby chose to move in the opposite direction.

"Incredible" Abdulhamid has earned Aston Villa interest

A Saudi champion and one of the best defenders in the country, Abdulhamid has more than earned the interest of Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, AS Roma and others in a busy race for his signature. Villa, of course, after their new approach, will be hoping to take the lead in that race, but it remains to be seen whether they can reach an agreement on both personal terms and on a fee with Al-Hilal.

The 24-year-old ended last season with four goals and nine assists – eclipsing Matty Cash's five goals and three assists in the process – and could now make his biggest move yet to Villa Park. Dubbed "incredible" by Arab News, Abdulhamid could be a shrewd coup by those in the Midlands this summer.

Strength in depth could be key for Villa if they want to repeat last season's success in the Premier League whilst causing even greater upsets in the Champions League, and adding Abdulhamid to compete with Cash would bring exactly that.

Arsenal keen to prise long-term transfer target Raphinha away from Barcelona

His form has started attracting interest from clubs across Europe including Premier League giants Arsenal, according to .

The Gunners, who have missed out in the title race at the last moment in the past two seasons, are finally hoping to cross the line this time and are accordingly planning to bolster their attack. The report also adds that the north London outfit are ready to offer a whopping €90 million (£75m/$95m) to secure the Brazilian's signature. The club had earlier shown interest in the player before he had completed his transfer from Leeds United to Catalonia.

DID YOU KNOW?

Raphinha has been linked with a move away in the past, as the Catalans have contemplated offloading him amid their ongoing financial crisis. However, now with the winger's rise in form, it is unlikely that head coach Hansi Flick will sanction the player's sale.

Liverpool have made U-turn over "exceptional" £50,000-a-week ace’s future

Liverpool are believed to have made a U-turn regarding the future of an "exceptional" player, according to an intriguing transfer update.

Liverpool transfer news

The Merseysiders continue to be linked with moves for various players in the current transfer window, with Hoffenheim and Germany forward Max Beier emerging as one option. The 21-year-old is a highly-rated attacking talent with great pace, and could feel that this summer is the right time to enjoy a new challenge.

Bringing in a new centre-back has to be seen as a primary piece of business for Liverpool before the new Premier League season gets underway, and Juventus ace Gleison Bremer is someone who Arne Slot personally wants to bring to Anfield in the coming weeks.

Juventus defender Gleison Bremer

Further up the pitch, the Reds are said to have made an approach for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, who is coming off the back of a magnificent season with the Portuguese giants. The Swede scored 29 goals in 32 starts in the Primeira Liga, but looks to be heading towards Arsenal.

This summer has also seen Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon linked with Liverpool many times, having grown up a boyhood Reds supporter. The Magpies are insistent that the England international is going nowhere, but if he makes it clear that he wants to move to Anfield, they could find it hard to keep hold of him.

Now, a significant update has emerged regarding a current Liverpool player, with a big U-turn happening.

"Exceptional" Liverpool ace could now stay

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are now "very unlikely" to let Wataru Endo leave the club this summer, despite reports suggesting otherwise. Recent reports have suggested that he would be allowed to move on, not suiting Slot's style of play, but the new Reds manager is "unwilling" to weaken his midfield, instead preferring the Japanese to stay put and bolster his options.

Keeping hold of Endo certainly wouldn't be a bad thing, even though he arguably feels limited in a technical sense, compared to elite-level defensive midfielders in the modern game. That being said, Jurgen Klopp was a big admirer during their one year together at Liverpool.

"He’s a machine. He is footballing-wise exceptional. His defensive brain is outstanding. He gives us a lot of freedom for a lot of things. Yeah, top development. Very helpful, very helpful."

At 31, Endo needs to be considered nothing more than a squad player if he does stay put, but with injuries so often hurting the Reds in recent years, so retaining his services would aid the depth at Slot's disposal.

Liverpool could ditch Endo with move for "world-class" £25m maestro

That being said, if the Dutchman decides that he doesn't need the £50,000-a-week Japan international, supporters will likely see sense in the decision, given his age and the fact that another midfielder could still come in.

Ultimately, it feels like a win-win situation for Liverpool, with Endo producing some excellent performances in a Reds shirt, making 29 league appearances last term, but also not representing the future.

Mustafizur Rahman to prioritise Tests over IPL, if selected

Mustafizur Rahman has said that he will be available for Bangladesh’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in April, if selected. Rahman had been picked up by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2021 auction for his base price of INR 1 crore, and the tournament is expected to clash with the Sri Lanka series. Both Tests that the two teams are scheduled to play are part of the World Test Championship, and they will also play an ODI Super League series in May.Related

BCB to add clauses in central contracts after Shakib's IPL request

Russell Domingo: 'Bangladesh need players who are hungry for Tests, can guts it out for five days'

With the Bangladesh Cricket Board having allowed Shakib Al Hasan to miss the Tests against Sri Lanka after he had requested to be allowed to do so, there was speculation about whether Rahman, too, would follow suit. However, Rahman said he was putting his Bangladesh commitments ahead of his IPL ones.”Country comes first for me. I will play Tests if the team management selects me,” Rahman told reporters on Tuesday, shortly before Bangladesh were to depart for New Zealand for a white-ball tour.”If I am not selected, I will take BCB’s advice. I spoke to the BCB president, who has left the decision to me. If they let me play the IPL I will, otherwise I am choosing to play for the country.”Shakib’s decision also led to the BCB saying they would add clauses in central contracts where players would have to specify their availability.Rahman was part of the XI for the first Test of Bangladesh’s recent series against West Indies and not the second. He has played only 14 Tests in all since making his debut in mid-2015 – less than half of the 30 Tests Bangladesh have played in the same period. Consequently, his selection for the Test squad is not a given, unlike Shakib’s.However, the BCB hadn’t given Rahman an NOC for last year’s IPL. Two years before that, he was reprimanded by the board for not reporting an injury he picked up in IPL 2018, while playing for Mumbai Indians.”There’s no pressure to play in the IPL or for Bangladesh,” Rahman said. “It is not new for me. I have forgone IPL in the past to play for the country. I am thinking along similar lines this time too.”.In his last IPL stint, Rahman played for Mumbai in 2018, taking seven wickets in seven matches at an average of 32.85 and an economy rate of 8.36. He had much more success with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the previous two seasons, although he featured in just one game in 2017. In 17 matches for Sunrisers overall, he collected 17 wickets at 26.16 and an economy rate of 7.14 – his figures somewhat spoiled by his solitary outing in 2017 in which he bowled 2.4 overs for 34 runs without picking up a wicket.

Newcastle can forget Bowen & Elanga by signing "world-class" target

Ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is working tirelessly to improve his squad to try and bolster the Magpies’ chances of qualifying for the Champions League once again.

His side were plagued with injuries during the previous season, missing out on European football altogether after Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph against Manchester City at Wembley at the end of May.

However, it will give the Magpies a great opportunity to return to their best with a more manageable fixture congestion that could prevent a repeat of any injury problems the club were ruined by over the last 12 months.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

The lack of squad depth on Tyneside was desperately highlighted, often relying on youngsters Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley to fill the voids left by the injured first-team stars.

One particular area Howe needs reinforcements in is the forward line, with Miguel Almiron potentially moving to Saudi Arabia leaving the Magpies even shorter in attacking areas.

Newcastle’s attempts to sign a new attacker this summer

The club have scouted far and wide to find a suitable player who can make an instant impact on the first team at St James’ Park, but are yet to have any breakthrough in their attempts.

However, journalist Ben Jacobs confirmed the club still have multiple players on their shortlist, with West Ham United star Jarrod Bowen and Anthony Elanga both on Howe’s radar for this summer transfer window.

The Magpies previously attempted to secure a deal with Nuno Espírito Santo’s side in a swap deal for the departed Anderson in an attempt to prevent a PSR punishment from the Premier League this season.

However, Forest rejected the offer, but the club still remain interested in a move for the former Manchester United attacker, who only cost the Reds £15m last summer.

A deal for Bowen would undoubtedly be a more expensive one, with Julen Lopetegui’s side holding out for a fee in the region of £100m to part ways with the 27-year-old.

Howe’s side have previously been credited with interest in one other attacker, who would be a much cheaper alternative to the aforementioned pair, whilst also providing more quality and increasing the club’s chances of securing a Champions League spot.

A better option than Elanga & Bowen

A couple of years ago, Italian winger Federico Chiesa lit up the Euros, starring as his nation broke English hearts at Wembley.

However, fast forward three years, and the 26-year-old has struggled to regain his form following his serious knee injury, with new boss Thiago Motta making the attacker free to leave should anyone pay £21m for his services.

federico-chiesa-transfer-news-newcastle-premier-league

A couple of months ago, he was linked with a move to Tyneside, with Howe needing to reignite interest in the forward given his stats in Serie A during 2023/24.

When comparing the “world-class” Chiesa, as described by journalist Zach Lowy, to Bowen and Elanga, it’s clear the Juventus talent would be a better addition, especially when factoring in his bargain price tag.

Whilst contributing with fewer combined goals and assists in 2023/24, he’s dominated the pair in numerous other key areas that would improve Howe’s side.

The Italian ace has averaged more shots per 90, whilst also completing more progressive carries and passes, demonstrating his ability to drive with the ball and find a key pass that could allow players such as Alexander Isak to reach the next level.

He’s also completed more take-ons, showcasing his ability and desire to beat the opposition, something which Bowen and Elanga simply can’t match.

Given Newcastle’s recent scare with the Premier League’s PSR rules, they will have to continue operating in a shrewd manner to prevent a potential breach next season.

Chiesa would allow the club to do just that, providing a cheaper alternative to the other transfer targets in the final third, whilst adding needed flair and quality to Howe’s forward line.

Club approach Sunderland for "freak of nature" as Black Cats want £12m+ fee

A European club have made contact with Sunderland over a player dubbed a "freak of nature" regarding a summer move, according to a new transfer claim.

Sunderland transfer news

There have been plenty of Black Cats-related transfer news to emerge in recent days and weeks, with the future of Jobe Bellingham one key talking point. He is reportedly wanted by Serie A giants Lazio, but a move hasn't felt too close to coming to fruition. Tottenham have also been mentioned as potential suitors, as the teenager looks to emulate his world-famous older brother, Jude Bellingham.

Meanwhile, Caen striker Alexandre Mendy has been strongly linked with a move to Sunderland, having outscored Jack Clarke last season. A bid has even been lodged for his services, as Regis Le Bris looks to strengthen his attack before the 2024/25 Championship season gets underway.

Sunderland linked striker Alexandre Mendy in action for Guingamp.

Meanwhile, former Sheffield United midfielder Oliver Norwood has also emerged as a target for Sunderland in the current transfer window, having left Bramall Lane when his contract expired this summer. It means he is now a free agent, making him less of a gamble if the move doesn't work out, and he could add real nous in the middle of the park.

He is capable of taking up both defensive and attacking midfield roles, and he has racked up a total of 381 appearances in the Championship, highlighting how vastly experienced he is at this point in his career.

However, back to departure, and a new update ha emerged regarding Bellingham's Stadium of Light future.

Club make contact with Sunderland over Bellingham

According to TuttoMercatoWeb [via Sport Witness], Lazio have made contact with Sunderland over the signing of Bellingham this summer. They've asked for information over a potential deal and could now make a push.

It is claimed that the Black Cats want €15m (£12.7m) for the 18-year-old's services, but it is believed that he is holding out for a move to the Premier League next summer, and is happy to remain at the Stadium of Light for another season.

There is an inevitability about Bellingham eventually leaving Sunderland in the near future, in truth, with the £6,500-a-week attacking midfield ace such an ambitious young footballer who will already be mapping out his future.

He is a special talent, which can sometimes go under the radar because of the worldwide attention that his brother receives, and teammate Dan Neil has said of him: "He makes me look like a 17-year-old. He's an absolute freak of nature, physically. I have never seen a 17-year-old that size. Technically, he is a top, top, player as well."

Sunderland will hope that Lazio's latest interest goes away, though, allowing them to retain Bellingham's services for one more season before he potentially heads off to the Premier League.

Contact made: Sunderland braced for big money offer for "amazing" 22 y/o

One of the Black Cats’ most important players is attracting interest this summer.

ByTom Coates Aug 1, 2024

The one chance that the Black Cats could have of keeping their most prized asset is if they earn promotion to the top flight next season, which should act as a major incentive to Le Bris and the rest of his squad.

Cameron Green hits 168 as Western Australia declaration opens up contest

The home side pulled out 101 behind then took early wickets before South Australia extended their lead to 243

An intriguing final day was in prospect at the WACA after Cameron Green hit an unbeaten 168 before Western Australia declared behind to open up the game which was followed by a brief period where bowlers dominated.Green was in sight of a maiden double century at tea (having made 197 earlier this season) when Shaun Marsh declared with the home side 101 behind on a surface that has been significantly in favour of the batsmen. However, the Western Australia bowlers then took charge to rattle South Australia. Will Bosisto and Liam Scott were both taken at first slip by Marsh, Henry Hunt was given lbw to a very full delivery from Aaron Hardie and Travis Head, who made a double century in the first innings, edged an excellent delivery from Liam Guthrie to second to leave them 4 for 61.South Australia were then put back on track to set a target on the final day by a positive partnership between Alex Carey and Harry Nielsen as the pair added 81 in 22 overs.Led by Green, Western Australia enjoyed two sessions of batting dominance to comfortably avoid the follow-on. Cameron Bancroft, who scored a century on the second day, fell to the first over of the second new ball when he shouldered arms at Chadd Sayers, but Green brought up his second Shield century of the season – and sixth first-class hundred – with a strong on-drive in the last over before lunch. After the interval Wes Agar produced an impressive spell which accounted for Hilton Cartwright, bowled through the gate, and Josh Inglis caught behind off an inside edge before Green and Hardie cut loose towards the tea break to added 61 in 10 overs.

Lopetegui must swiftly axe West Ham flop who earns over 4x more than Duran

West Ham United have dispelled any notion that the glory days have passed, with new head coach Julen Lopetegui combining with technical director Tim Steidten to get busy building this summer.

Luis Guilherme, an exciting teenage winger from Brazil, has signed in a £25.5m deal, while Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Max Kilman has joined for £40m. More is set to happen at the London Stadium, with landing a centre-forward among the most important issues.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

Luckily, as per Fabrizio Romano, West Ham have been busy, offering £35m to sign Jhon Duran from Aston Villa. The 20-year-old Colombian scored eight goals for Unai Emery's side last season and has been described as an "erratic entertainer" by The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell, creating a storm of chaos when thrown onto the field.

Michail Antonio, 34, started just 21 times in the Premier League last year as he battled through injuries, and he shall remain on the books. Danny Ings, however, has flattered to deceive throughout his time as an Iron and must be ditched.

Why Danny Ings must be sold

West Ham signed Ings from Aston Villa for £15m in January 2023. He had been a prolific Premier League figure with Southampton, where he scored 44 goals from 100 matches, but fell by the wayside in the Midlands.

Danny Ings for West Ham

Frankly, he hasn't picked himself up in the capital, instead tumbled deeper and deeper into the muddy morass. A return of four goals from 52 appearances hardly speaks of an astute investment, especially given the struggles that West Ham have found at No. 9 over recent years.

For Lopetegui to throw the veteran – who will be 32 years old in under two weeks – back into the starring role at centre-forward would likely prove to be an unsuccessful opening gambit, and considering his weekly salary, it's surely time to take him off the books.

The joint-second-highest earner in the London Stadium club's squad, Ings has not provided West Ham with bang for their buck – not by half.

Given that the up-and-coming Duran is earning just £30k per week at Villa – over four times less than his positional peer – he could feasibly be signed and provided with a salary comfortably below that of the three-cap England international.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran.

Southampton are actually seeking to re-sign the striker this summer after getting promoted to the Premier League, so surely here is the perfect opportunity to close a forgettable door for all involved.

Ings just didn't click in Moyes' West Ham system, and while Lopetegui's arrival has seen fresh life gust into the first-team squad, the one-time Saints sharpshooter is not getting any younger and to balance the striking odds on his shoulders would be an ill-fated gamble indeed.

It would be quite ironic for the Hammers to ditch Ings, having signed him from Villa, and replace him with Duran, signing him from Villa. But while the first time proved unlucky, Duran has the world at his feet and might just prove to be an absolute force in the Premier League for years to come.

Steidten and the powers that be in east London must ensure that this transfer rotation is enacted swiftly.

West Ham have hit gold on phenom who's worth even more than Watkins & Duran

Julen Lopetegui must relish the chance to wield this highly talented player.
