14 players who have played for both Manchester City and Arsenal

Arsenal and Manchester City have become fierce Premier League rivals following their recent title battles.

While they share a rivalry on the pitch, they have also shared a fair number of players. The likes of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko even made moves directly to Arsenal from City, while Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure have headed in the opposite direction.

They are among the 14 players to have played for these two giants of men’s football in the Premier League era – here is a list of all those to have done it.

Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal 2006-2009; Man City 2009-2012)

Emmanuel Adebayor is the first man on the list, and given that he was brave enough to cross the north London divide, his famous celebration against Arsenal makes all the more sense.

Adebayor made the move to London from French side Monaco and then spent three seasons at the Emirates.

One memorable moment in the red of Arsenal saw the striker sent off for supposedly punching Frank Lampard in the 2007 League Cup final when his side lost to Chelsea.

He switched the capital for Manchester, and whilst he was unable to make a more prolonged impact there, he did score in each of his first four league games for the club – which just so happened to be against his former employers. To celebrate this strike, he famously ran the length of the field to celebrate in front of the Arsenal faithful.

Nicolas Anelka (Arsenal 1997-1999; Man City 2002-2005)

Nicolas Anelka played for a number of English clubs during his glittering career. As well as stints at Bolon Wanderers and Chelsea, he can also count Arsenal and Manchester City among his long list of former employers.

The Frenchman has trophies to show for his time in red and white as the Gunners won the league title and FA Cup in 1997/98, as well as the Community Shield the following summer.

Anelka left Arsenal for Real Madrid and won the Champions League there, before signing for City in 2002.

Two of his best four Premier League goal returns came for Man City, and given that he arrived years before Sheikh Mansour took over – and following City’s last promotion to the top tier – his transfer was quite the coup.

Gael Clichy (Arsenal 2003-2011; Man City 2011-2017)

From one Frenchman to another – and the trend of playing for Arsenal before Manchester City continues.

Gael Clichy arrived in north London from Cannes, where Arsene Wenger had been a big admirer of his, and then lifted the coveted golden Premier League trophy in his first season.

The Invincibles remain one of the great teams to ever compete in England’s top division and Clichy played his part, even if he did make just 12 appearances.

He was a highly respected fullback for the best part of a decade and then carried on his success with Man City. With the Citizens, he won a further two league titles as well as a host of other domestic trophies.

Paul Dickov (Arsenal 1990-1996; Man City 1996-2002)

Paul Dickov is one of the earlier names to feature on this list, having joined Arsenal prior to the formation of the Premier League.

He came through their academy, but was unable to establish himself as a regular in the first team.

As a result, the Scotsman is better known for his stint with Man City, although he enjoyed something of a journeyman career, playing for several English sides until his retirement in 2011.

City were a second-tier club when Dickov joined in 1996 and went through the highs and lows with them, playing in the Premier League but also in the third tier, where his finest hour came in 1999 following his dramatic play-off final equaliser against Gillingham. Who knows where City would be but for that goal?

Gabriel Jesus (Man City 2017-2022; Arsenal 2022-present)

Gabriel Jesus is one of the two current ex-City stars at Arsenal, where his time in north London has been stunted by injuries.

When available, the Brazilian has proven to be an important piece of the Gunners’ attack under Mikel Arteta, but his manager certainly will have wanted to use him more regularly. Jesus had a fine start to life at Arsenal before a long-term injury sustained at the World Cup halted his progress.

Prior to playing in red, he was first introduced to English football fans wearing Man City’s blue after making the move to this country from Palmeiras.

As can be said for everyone who has been managed by Pep Guardiola, he has an impressive trophy haul, although he’d end up leaving before they finally broke their Champions League duck.

However, a perfect chipped finish against Southampton on the final day of the 2017/18 season secured City’s historic 100-point tally, and so he is etched into the club’s history books already.

Samir Nasri (Arsenal 2008-2011; Man City 2011-2017)

Samir Nasri was electric when he came into his own at Arsenal, and so their fans weren’t best pleased when he signed for Man City in 2011.

Winning four trophies during his time at the Etihad, including two Premier Leagues, one can’t begrudge him the move, but that won’t make it hurt any less.

The duo of Nasri and Cesc Fabregas made football a true joy to watch with pinpoint passing and delightful dribbling.

Whilst his accolades from a team perspective came in blue, it was in red when his personal performances were most noted, winning a variety of individual awards as an Arsenal man as well as featuring in the 2010/11 PFA Team of the Year.

David Rocastle (Arsenal 1985-1992; Man City 1993-1994)

David “Rocky” Rocastle, who was very close friends with Ian Wright, was Arsenal through and through. He was in the academy for a few years before he made the breakthrough in 1985 aged just 18.

Rocastle was a constant in the Arsenal first team for seven years before joining Leeds United in 1992, becoming their record signing at the time.

The midfielder signed for Man City after a single season at Elland Road, though the finest moments of his career undoubtedly came with Arsenal, where he was part of two title-winning sides under George Graham.

Bacary Sagna (Arsenal 2007-2014; Man City 2014-2017)

Gael Clichy wasn’t the only French full-back to play for both of these sides. Bacary Sagna arrived at Arsenal a few years after his compatriot, before leaving English football alongside him in 2017, having joined City three years prior.

Although he did get his hands on the FA Cup in his final Arsenal game, Sagna’s trophy cabinet looks very different to his defensive partner’s, and you have to feel for him, as he missed out on Premier League titles with both clubs by a few years at either end of his career.

That said, while Patrice Evra’s presence meant that Clichy didn’t get the number of French caps he perhaps deserved, Sagna notched 65 himself, as well as making nearly 300 appearances for Arsenal.

David Seaman (Arsenal 1990-2003; Man City 2003-2004)

One of two goalkeepers on this list is David Seaman. Again, he is best known for his time with Arsenal having played there for over a decade.

The shot-stopper made his name at Peterborough United, Birmingham City and Queens’ Park Rangers before joining the Gunners, where he replaced John Lukic as the undisputed No 1 at Highbury. Three league titles and four FA Cups later – including one in his final Gunners game – he had assured his status as an Arsenal legend.

Seaman was 39 when he left Arsenal for Man City, where he managed less than one top-flight season for them prior to his retirement.

Sylvinho (Arsenal 1999-2001; Man City 2009-2010)

Sylvinho played the majority of his European club football in Spain with Celta Vigo and Barcelona, but these spells came sandwiched in between periods of play in England.

The Brazilian, who currently manages the Albanian men’s national team, was a part of the PFA Team of the Year for 2000/01 during his time as a Gunner.

As a two-time Champions League winner and three-time La Liga champion with Barcelona, that is the club he is most linked to in Europe, though he did end his career with a brief spell at Man City under Mark Hughes.

Fresh off of a 2008/09 treble with Barca, Sylvinho returned to England to play for City before hanging up his boots altogether.

Sheffield Wednesday: Appointment of 4-2-3-1 boss could fire Owls to safety

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri recently decided to part ways with manager Xisco Munoz after a dismal start to the Championship campaign.

The Owls are currently bottom of the league table and have failed to win any of their ten matches so far, with two draws and eight defeats on the board.

It is the worst start to a season in the club's history, with two points from ten games, and that caused the Spanish head coach to lose his job earlier this week.

Chansiri is now tasked with bringing in a manager who can turn the tide and save Wednesday from what already looks set to be a relegation back down to League One.

What's the latest on Neil Warnock to Sheffield Wednesday?

Journalist Alan Biggs recently reported that out-of-work manager Neil Warnock would be interested in taking on the job to save the team from the drop.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Owls are willing to make an approach to the former Sheffield United boss to replace Munoz.

Former Huddersfield boss Neil Warnock.

The likes of Stevenage's Steve Evans and free agent tactician Oscar Garcia have been linked with the vacant job at Hillsborough and Chansiri is said to want a swift decision to be made.

Who did Warnock manage last season?

Wednesday's owner could, however, fire the club to safety by swooping to secure an agreement with Warnock, who kept Huddersfield in the division last season.

The experienced gaffer, who typically deploys a 4-2-3-1 formation, joined the Yorkshire-based club in February when they were 23rd in the table and one point from safety.

He produced 25 points from his 15 matches in charge towards the end of the 2022/23 campaign, with seven wins and four draws, to lead his side to 18th place and survival.

Former Huddersfield boss Neil Warnock.

Journalist Josh Bunting, who described Warnock as "old fashioned", hailed the 74-year-old manager for getting results and turning the tide for the Terriers after they looked "doomed" before his arrival.

Warnock has not been relegated from the Championship, or the second tier of English football before the name change, in the 21st century and holds the record for the most promotions in the Football League with eight.

None of his sides have finished lower than 18th since the start of the 2016/17 campaign and he won promotion to the Premier League with Cardiff City in the 2017/18 season.

He is a proven performer in the dugout at this level and knows exactly what it takes, as shown by his excellent record, to avoid relegation to League One.

One of his former Cardiff stars, Sol Bamba, told talkSPORT that Warnock would "galvanise" the squad with his ability to get the best out of teams that are in a difficult place.

The central defender also stated that the ex-Sheffield United boss would not be bothered by any backlash from supporters who would question his allegiances.

Therefore, Warnock could be a brilliant appointment to get the Owls out of the precarious position that they have found themselves in. His track record suggests that he can get results and push the team outside of the relegation places, which could create a base from which the next manager can build from.

Shenwari and spinners topple Bangladesh

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAFP

Afghanistan began their historic tour of India with a dominant performance against Bangladesh, crushing them by 45 runs in the first T20 in Dehradun. The clinical display went along expected lines as their big-hitters Mohammad Shahzad, Samiullah Shenwari and Shafiqullah got them to competitive 167 for 8 in 20 overs. That set it up for the usual suspects – Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman – to do their thing and dismantle Bangladesh, as they were bowled out for 122 in 19 overs.Having broken the back of the chase, Rashid snaffled an excellent catch – diving to his left and grabbing Abu Jayed’s slap overhead with both hands – giving Afghanistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. It was a complete performance from Afghanistan, characterised by a clinical bowling performance that didn’t give Bangladesh any chance of chasing down the total.Bangladesh began a tough chase on the wrong foot. Tamim Iqbal paid for indecision – caught between sweeping and defending Mujeeb’s first ball of the innings – to be pinned in front of middle and off. Shakib Al Hasan struck two fours, before poor shot selection, against the turn of Mohammad Nabi, cost him his wicket in the fourth over.Liton Das looked slightly more accomplished at the crease. During the course of a 20-ball 30, Liton treated the crowd to a sweetly-timed cut, a switch-hit, and a soaring six over long-on. But after he fell to Nabi, to a questionable decision in the eighth over, Bangladesh imploded against Rashid Khan.Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman fell off his first two balls, in the 11th over, when the game was still in the balance; Mushfiqur missing a reverse sweep, and Sabbir caught clueless against a quick googly. Mosaddek Hossain struggled for 23 balls before holing out in the deep to give Rashid his third wicket. The rest of the Afghanistan attack, too, played a part in reining in Bangladesh. Shapoor Zadran, like Rashid, took three wickets, but leaked 40 runs in his four overs. Nabi took two wickets, and Mujeeb and Karim Janat took one each.Earlier, Mohammad Shahzad and Usman Ghani got Afghanistan off to a sound start, putting on 62 runs for the first wicket. Ghani struck the first six of the game in the fifth over, but after yet another over went without a boundary – five out of 8.2 at that stage – Rubel Hossain snuck past a desperate attempt at a slog and pegged his leg stump back.Shahzad, too, struggled to get going after the Powerplay overs. He was dropped by Shakib, off his own bowling, at the start of 12th over, and ended it by reverse-sweeping him straight to point. He had made 40 off 37 balls, with five fours.Mahmudullah’s double-strike in the 14th over, where he dismissed Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi, left Afghanistan with the tough task of rebuilding the innings with six overs remaining. But Bangladesh gave away the advantage in the last four overs.First, Mahmudullah dropped Samiullah Shenwari in the 17th over at the long-on boundary, before Shenwari swatted Abu Jayed for two sixes and as many fours in the following over. He fell off the last ball of the same over, but his 18-ball 36, with three fours and as many sixes, had revived Afghanistan.Shafiqullah started with a six off the first ball he faced, before hammering Abul Hasan for two more in the last over. He fell off the next ball, and even though Afghanistan lost two more wickets in the last over, Rashid Khan’s last-ball six gave them a strong finish.Afghanistan took 62 runs off the last four overs, with Mahmudullah, despite his two-wicket over, never returning to bowl.

Man United: Red Devils failed to sign £32m talent who then became a Chelsea ‘superstar’

It's been a whole decade since Sir Alex Ferguson departed Manchester United after spearheading their dominance in the Premier League era.

Since the Scots departure in 2013, United have never recovered as a club and supporters have been made to suffer through the board's reckless decision-making, especially in the transfer market.

The signings of Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Morgan Schneiderlin and Alex Sanchez spring to mind as deals that rinsed the club of transfer fees and wages without propelling the side any closer to the Premier League's summit.

For all the silverware and success he brought to Old Trafford, Ferguson was also no stranger to shelling out on a player who dramatically underperformed. Deals to sign Juan Sebastien Veron, Kleberson and Eric Djemba epitomised the times when the legendary manager got it wrong in the transfer market.

Meanwhile, Ferguson was prolific with missing out on a whole host of world-class talent that would have accelerated their dominance further, as the likes of Ronaldinho, Alan Shearer and Gareth Bale were all pursued by Man United at some point in their careers.

Another example of a world beater that the Red Devils missed out on was Eden Hazard in 2012 as Ferguson attempted to sign the promising Belgian in the latter stages of his tenure.

How close did Man United come to signing Eden Hazard?

In 2012, Man United required a creative midfield superstar who could score goals and a 21-year-old Hazard rose onto their radar after his sensational season at Lille as he recorded a staggering 20 goals and 18 assists in Ligue 1.

According to the Guardian, at the time, several top Premier League clubs were showing an interest in his services, but it was Ferguson who thought he'd stolen the lead in the race to sign him.

In March of that year, the United manager flew out to France to watch Hazard in action against Lyon and the Belgian claimed he was "excited" by the presence of the legendary manager.

Chelsea's Eden Hazard

He told the French newspaper La Voix du Nord [via the Guardian]: "Of course [United interest me], this is a club that excites everyone, but for now my focus is on Lille. But yes, it is a pleasure to be watched by one of the best coaches in the world, if not the best."

Despite waxing lyrical about Ferguson and the prospect of playing for Man United, his eyes were turned by the project at Chelsea after they had won the Champions League.

Indeed, the Belgian superstar snubbed the chance to sign for United by moving to Stamford Bridge for a reported fee of £32m and the rest was history.

How many goals did Hazard score in the Premier League?

Described by Jamie Carragher as an "absolute superstar", Hazard would become one of the greatest Premier League players of all time during his seven-year stint at Chelsea.

The brilliant Belgian chalked up an eye-watering 202 goal contributions in 352 appearances for the club, scoring 85 of his goals in the top flight.

Through his exceptional speed, quick changes of direction and unrivalled agility in possession, Hazard produced countless moments of brilliance at Chelsea and became one of the continent's hottest commodities through his ability to score a whole host of otherworldly solo goals, namely against Arsenal in 2017, Liverpool in 2018 and West Ham in 2019.

After that wonderful individual slaloming run and finish against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, Jurgen Klopp praised the 126-cap Belgium international as a "special player" and the legacy he left behind at Chelsea demonstrates that the German was correct with his glowing admission of the player.

Hazard was capable of producing the spectacular in big games and his sensational strike against Tottenham in 2016 was remembered for more than just the goal itself as he single-handedly prevented Spurs from winning the Premier League title.

Utilising his explosiveness, power and precision on the ball, the 5 foot 8 wizard was almost impossible to stop when in full throttle and that's what made him a joy to watch as he eventually joined Real Madrid in a staggering move worth up to £150m.

Hazard continued to showcase why Ferguson was so desperate to sign him and United supporters can only dream of having a player like him now, especially after seeing their £73m capture of Jadon Sancho turn into a flop.

The Englishman is admittedly dealing with his own personal problems at the moment but his performances have largely been anonymous. Fleet-footed like Hazard, unfortunately, he does not have the end product to match in the Premier League, scoring just nine goals in 58 outings.

Liverpool: Klopp could bin Endo by unleashing 5 ft 8 Reds star

Liverpool have made a fine start to the 2023/24 campaign, having won five straight games across all competitions since opening their account with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

Having defeated Austrian side LASK in the Europa League opener on Thursday evening, the Reds now turn their attention back to the domestic scene, with resilient West Ham United making the trip to Merseyside to face Jurgen Klopp's men at Anfield.

The Hammers have also started the term in good form since winning the Europa Conference League in June, consequently Liverpool's rivals in European competition this year.

In the league, they occupy sixth place – just three points and places behind Liverpool – after winning three of their opening five matches, only suffering defeat last time out against imperious league champions Manchester City.

Liverpool will be confident of securing victory but will need to be on their toes, to say the least; under David Moyes' tutelage, West Ham have become one of the most successful sides in English football and have indeed extended that success onto the continental stage.

Last month, high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion were defeated on home soil following a counter-attacking masterclass from the Irons, who know how to sit deep and soak up danger before striking teams on the break.

Such could prove difficult for the Reds, but with firepower to rival any side in world football, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and co will be raring for an opportunity to continue the surging start to the season.

What's the latest Liverpool team news?

Captain Virgil van Dijk, who started against LASK, is now eligible for selection in the Premier League, having missed the past two matches due to picking up a red card against Newcastle United at St. James' Park.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago Alcantara are not expected to be available for the clash against the Irons, so Joe Gomez is likely to deputise at right-back once again despite teenager Stefan Bajcetic's promising performance in the role against LASK.

Klopp could field an unchanged midfield trio from the side that came from behind to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 at Molineux last Saturday, with Ryan Gravenberch looking lively and picking up an assist in midweek but departing with an injury in the second half – though it is suspected to just be cramp.

Darwin Nunez posted a goal and an assist in the Europa League and already looks to have made improvements from last season, where he split opinion after his club-record £85m transfer from Benfica.

But the Reds' German manager may well opt to reinstate the dynamic Cody Gakpo into the starting fold, who scored against Wolves but sat the recent European contest out.

How is Wataru Endo performing?

One player who might find themselves relegated to the bench once again after featuring from the start against the recently defeated Bundesliga opposition is Wataru Endo, who didn't quite take the opportunity to impress.

With both Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo opting for Chelsea over Liverpool in a high-profile transfer battle this summer, the Merseyside club decided to make an astute £16m swoop for experienced holding midfielder Endo, who joined from Stuttgart.

The Japanese star was described as a "proper warrior and leader" by Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard after the move was confirmed, with the 50-cap international making the most clearances, and winning the most aerial duels and possession wins in the defensive third since the start of the 2021/22 league season, according to Squawka.

He hasn't quite cut the mustard for Liverpool so far though, winning just one ground duel on Thursday, also being dribbled past one and making only one tackle.

An industrious midfielder, sure, but not the slick-passing, all-conquering midfielder that Klopp needs to serve as the starring No. 6 – a reliable and resourceful squad option, shall we say?

Against West Ham, it is the robustness and swiftness of the midfield that will decide the home side's fate, and despite flattering to deceive against the Old Gold last week, Liverpool must now unleash Alexis Mac Allister, who was moved to the bench against LASK.

How good is Alexis Mac Allister?

The Argentinian midfielder joined Liverpool in a £35m transfer from Brighton this summer, something transfer guru Fabrizio Romano remarked to be a "bargain for the Reds."

He had won the 2022 World Cup in December and starred in a successful season with the Seagulls, scoring ten goals and supplying two assists in the Premier League, praised for his "impressive" start to life on Merseyside by the Daily Star's Neil Docking.

As per FBref, the 24-year-old ranks among the top 15% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 17% for progressive carries and the top 13% for successful take-ons per 90, highlighting the energy and optimism he brings to the fold – something that could prove vital in breaking down the Hammers.

exequiel-palacios-alexis-mac-allister-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

The £150k-per-week phenom didn't impress on his last start, with The Athletic's James Pearce noting that he "struggled badly", but this is due to a relentless international break with his nation halfway across the world and having played Bolivia merely days before at an alarmingly high altitude.

Dubbed a "maestro" by one South American journalist, the 5 foot 8 sensation has been a controlled and assured presence at the heart of Klopp's midfield for the majority of his time at Anfield thus far, completing 86% of his passes, winning 58% of his ground duels and succeeding with 60% of his dribbles, also making 5.4 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.

He is the engine that Liverpool need to steer over the line against West Ham, and while he does not boast Endo's defensive qualities, he could be the difference-maker as his side look to stay hot on champions and pace-setters Manchester City's trail.

Chelsea let a ‘monster’ leave for £0, now he’s better than Caicedo & worth £100m

Pairing together Chelsea's recent ethos of spend first, worry later under Todd Boehly and a history of loaning out a whopping 41 players at one time back in 2019 – it comes as no surprise that sometimes talent can slip through the Blues' net.

However, it's more unbearable than ever when said talent sits right under a club's nose. Today's agonising focus is a prime example in the face of the west London club's recent stagnation.

How much have Chelsea spent?

Well, if you got lost in the constant stream of moves to Stamford Bridge (we don't blame you), Chelsea spent £345.9m this summer alone. The eight moves that followed last season's especially insatiable expenditure saw Todd Boehly's total as owner now approach the billion pound mark.

One flagship capture, of course, was that of Brighton's 21-year-old Moises Caicedo. After gaining attention in a progressive Roberto Di Zerbi side as a hardworking midfield warrior, the Ecuadorian sparked a dramatic bidding war between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Eventually, he chose Stamford Bridge as his new home and penned a jaw-dropping eight-year contract with the option for an additional year, in a move that totalled £115m.

Chelsea'sMoisesCaicedowith manager Mauricio Pochettino

The size of the fee was emphasised further by Caicedo's boyhood club Independiente del Valle. After smartly inserting a sell-on clause, they are set to receive around £22m for a player they let go to Brighton for just £4m.

Unfortunately, Caicedo's impact has been a little underwhelming so far with just two starts to his name. What they could do for another of the summer's big money movers in Declan Rice…

Why did Declan Rice leave Chelsea?

Back in 2013, Chelsea painstakingly released a 14-year-old Declan Rice. England's centurion and Arsenal's new fan favourite started his footballing life at Cobham back in 2006.

Rice was so naturally adept that, despite never playing organised football as a child, he was still good enough for Chelsea's academy. He played alongside fellow midfielder Mason Mount, and began an infamous friendship with the now-Manchester United man.

Where Mount was the youthful poster boy, Rice was released in 2013 and perhaps, as the player claims, it was down to his slender height at the time. In disbelief at Chelsea's blasé nature (Rice is still uncertain as to why), West Ham emphatically signed the youngster.

With new opportunities, a welcome growth spurt, and success in the Hammers' development sides – Rice took just two years to break into the first team.

Just how good is Declan Rice now?

West Ham steadily showed prying Premier League eyes Declan Rice's capabilities. From 2015 until his move to Arsenal this summer in a £100m transfer, Rice amassed over 200 league appearances for West Ham and capped his final emotional term with victory in UEFA's Europa Conference League.

Rice's final season illustrated his level as Opta statisticians included him in their team of the season. Featuring as the sole West Ham representative, Rice won possession more than anyone else (334 times), and made the most interceptions (63).

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice

Meanwhile, he ranked ahead of Caicedo in some key midfield metrics, sitting second for ball carries (702), ball carry distance (7,136m) and ball carry progress distance (3,827m) behind only Rodri when it came to positional peers. It's safe to say that letting him go was a big mistake from Chelsea's point of view.

Rice also covered extensive distance. His third-highest rank of 412km is nearly the equivalent of running 10 marathons. It's clear why some journalists, including the Telegraph's Sam Dean, have been quick to label the midfielder a "monster."

Evidently, letting a player go for free and seeing him become a world-beater will be a bitter pill to swallow. With Chelsea's recent spending spree, it would be quick (and probably harsh) to say that they haven't learned from their mistakes either. In one regard, that statement rings true with numerous talents having been overlooked by a club and owner who likes the flash of new toys.

Yet, with the Americanised notion of vast multi-year contracts, Boehly looks to be instilling the best young talent for a long time to come – creating a new-money developmental side of the game not quite seen before.

Mfuneko Ngam named Warriors assistant coach

The former South Africa fast bowler was previously heading a successful academy at the University of Fort Harte, and has served in several coaching capacities since his retirement

Firdose Moonda07-Jun-2018Former South Africa fast bowler Mfuneko Ngam has been appointed the assistant coach of the Eastern-Cape-based Warriors franchise. Ngam, who played three Tests for South Africa between 2000 and 2001 before his career was cut short by injury, had previously been heading a successful academy at the University of Fort Hare, which concentrated on providing elite coaching in South Africa’s black African heartland.Ngam has worked in various coaching capacities since his retirement, including at CSA High Performance Programmes. He started an academy in Motherwell, a township 25 kilometres north of Port Elizabeth, and holds a Level 4 coaching qualification. He will work under head coach Rivash Gobind, who took over from Malibongwe Maketa after the latter was named South Africa’s assistant coach last September.Despite losing their coach on the eve of the 2017-18 season, Warriors had a good summer, sharing the one-day cup and finishing second on the first-class points table. The Warriors have not won a trophy outright since the 2009-10 season, but have faced several challenges, including the absence of a sponsor and a lack of high-profile players, something which is set to continue this summer. The Warriors squad for the 2018-19 season does not include a single nationally-contracted player. Kolpak player Simon Harmer, who was also named first-class cricketer of the season at the recent CSA awards, and Colin Ackermann, who plays as a local for Leicestershire because of an EU passport, remain on the Warriors’ book, but Kyle Abbott, who moved to the franchise from the Dolphins two seasons ago, was not on the list.Warriors squad: Andrew Birch, Jon-Jon Smuts, Aya Gqamane, Basheer Walters, Anrich Nortje, Gihahn Cloete, Clyde Fortuin, Mohammed Vallie, Simon Harmer, Colin Ackermann, Sinethemba Qeshile, Sithembile Langa, Lutho Sipamla, Eddie Moore, Matthew Breetzke, Sisanda Magala, Christiaan Jonker, Lesiba Ngoepe
