Moeen ready to take on Australia's short stuff

Moeen Ali is prepared for a barrage of short-pitched bowling during the Ashes but believes that could be the opportunity for him to attack

Andrew McGlashan30-Sep-2017Moeen Ali is prepared for a barrage of short-pitched bowling during the Ashes but believes that could be the opportunity for him to attack and feels ready for whatever Australia will throw at him.Moeen completed an outstanding home summer with the Man-of-the-Series award in the ODIs against West Indies after excelling with the bat, making 102 off 57 balls at Bristol and an unbeaten 48 off 25 to take England above the DLS requirement before rain arrived at The Oval. That followed a prolific Test series against South Africa were he became the first player to score 250 runs and take 25 wickets in a four-match series. Overall in England’s seven-Test season he scored 361 runs at 32.81 and took 30 wickets at 21.30; in 11 ODIs he scored 283 runs at 70.75 and a strike-rate of 159.88. Although his five wickets came at over 70, his economy rate was respectable at under a run-a-ball.Moeen played a vital role in the 2015 Ashes – his lower-order partnerships Stuart Broad, especially at Edgbaston, giving England crucial late runs – but there is a thought that his technique against the short ball will be tested down under with him occasionally having had trouble when batting higher up the order.”It’s something I’ve been working on and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I feel when you get in it’s a good place to bat. The ball doesn’t swing as much and hopefully whatever number I come in, I can express myself. I’m going to have to change a couple of things about the way I play but in terms of mindset I’ll just go and do what I normally do. The good thing is I’ve played against them before and I don’t want to speak too early or too confident but I’ll make sure I’m ready for it.”Hopefully they’ll get tired doing it [bowling the bouncer]. But you get chances to score all the time with the short stuff and I’m going to work hard on that. I am very excited about it.”Quite what role Moeen will play in the Ashes is now up in the air with Ben Stokes’ participation in the series uncertain. Should England be without Stokes, Moeen could be required to move up to No. 6 or 7 to fill the void. He has batted in every position from one to nine over his 44-match career, although 26 of them have been at seven or eight, and he has never made any secret of being keen to move up the list.”Yes, definitely. I’d love to bat wherever,” he said. “The higher up the better, I’d be very comfortable. Number eight, I’m kind of used to at the moment but if I get told to bat seven I feel capable of doing well there. Hopefully I can show that I can go out there and play against their bowlers and play well against them.”After a short post-season break, Moeen plans to work hard on his fitness ahead of leaving for Australia at the end of October aware of the physical demands the conditions could put on him.”I think I’ll give myself two weeks to prepare and come back and get a bit fitter. Batting and bowling is going to be hard out there so I just want to get ready for those conditions and keep up the confidence I have at the moment.”It’s something when you’re a young player you’re thinking you’d love to be on that tour. I never ever thought I would be on a tour like this and to be going, I’m very fortunate. Hopefully I can go out there and perform.”

Newcastle Could Sign A Monstrous Botman Partner

Newcastle United's Premier League campaign kicks off later this month as they host Aston Villa at St. James' Park and the home faithful could have a few new faces to see in action.

Who have Newcastle United signed this summer?

Eddie Howe has been able to bring in two new first-team signings so far during the summer transfer window as Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes have come in to bolster his options in midfield and out wide.

Talented youngster Yankuba Minteh has also been brought in but the 19-year-old winger was instantly sent back out on loan to Feyenoord in the Netherlands.

The Northern Echo have claimed that the head coach would like to make two further additions to the side before the deadline passes; a full-back and a central defender.

Newcastle and top-flight rivals Everton are both reportedly eyeing a swoop for Red Bull Salzburg centre-back Oumar Solet, although it remains to be seen how much it would take for the Austrian giants to cash in on him.

Who is Oumar Solet?

The 23-year-old colossus stands at 6 foot 4 and could form a monstrous partnership with current Magpies titan Sven Botman at the back if the club are able to snap him up before the end of the window.

Solet, who talent scout Jacek Kulig once described as "marauding", enjoyed a terrific 2022/23 campaign with Salzburg and could be a terrific signing for Howe if the French giant is able to translate his form over to English football.

He averaged a phenomenal Sofascore rating of 7.42 across 25 Bundesliga outings, which shows that the talented youngster produced consistently brilliant performances and rarely allowed his level to dip.

Solet also made a whopping 4.5 tackles and interceptions per game for Salzburg, which is more than any Toon player in any position managed last term.

To put those numbers into context, only Kieran Trippier (7.61) averaged a higher Sofascore rating for Newcastle in the Premier League and Fabian Schar, who Solet could replace on the right side of the defence, averaged a score of 7.13.

Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

The Switzerland international has entered the final year of his contract on Tyneside and turns 32 later this year, which could result in the Salzburg star and Botman, 23, being the long-term pairing for Howe at the back.

Solet and the Dutchman both stand at 6 foot 4 and have the ability to consistently dominate opposition attackers, which could make them a fearsome central defensive partnership for teams to break down this season.

The towering Frenchman won 63% of his Bundesliga duels last term and caught the eye with a stunning 83% aerial contest success rate across four Champions League outings. Meanwhile, Botman won 67% of his battles – 66% of them in the air – throughout his debut Premier League campaign for Newcastle.

This shows that they are both physically strong and imposing defenders who will not be bullied, which could give Howe's side a solid base from which to build.

Therefore, Dan Ashworth and the English tactician could unearth a terrific long-term partnership in defence for the Magpies by signing Solet to replace Botman as Schar's heir this summer.

Aston Villa Eyeing Swoop For £8.9k-p/w "Natural Goalscorer"

Aston Villa are interested in bringing Santos star Marcos Leonardo to the Premier League this summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio.

Who is Marcos Leonardo?

Leonardo is primarily a striker who has plied his trade at the Urbano Caldeira Stadium since his childhood days, having graduated from the club’s academy to get promoted to the first team three years ago. Across all age levels, he’s made 149 appearances to date.

The Brazil youth international's contract isn't set to expire until 2026, but having firmly established himself as Paulo Turra’s top-performing offensive player so far this season, he’s already attracted plenty of interest from several high-profile clubs in England.

Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest have all been linked with a swoop for the 20-year-old during the ongoing window, but with a move having yet failed to come to fruition, NSWE & Monchi have seemingly decided to enter the running in the hope of securing his services.

Unai Emery already has Ollie Watkins, Jhon Duran and Cameron Archer as his options at centre-forward, but with Wesley Moraes having completed a permanent move to Stoke City, not to mention that Keinan Davis has told the club that he wants to leave, the boss appears to be dipping into the market to find some new reinforcements.

Are Aston Villa signing Marcos Leonardo?

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Di Marzio name-checked Aston Villa as one of the clubs keeping close tabs on Leonardo, but admitted that as it stands, AS Roma are the team currently in pole position to land him. He wrote:

“#SerieA #Calciomercato | @OfficialASRoma, today is the decisive day for #MarcosLeonardo : the @SantosFC has to say whether or not he accepts the Giallorossi's offer. On the attacker there are also @AVFCOfficial and @NFFC, but the player has given priority to #Roma @SkySport.”

Santos striker Marcos Leonardo.

How good is Marcos Leonardo?

According to football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Leonardo is a “natural goalscorer” which is proven by his return so far this season having posted eight goal contributions (six goals and two assists) in 12 Serie A appearances, so should the striker put pen to paper, it would be an exciting coup for Aston Villa.

Sponsored by Nike, Santos’ £8.9k-per-week earner has also recorded a total of 28 shots over the course of the current campaign which is more than any of his fellow teammates, via FBRef, alongside being awarded two man-of-the-match accolades for his outstanding performances.

The Itapetinga native is additionally a versatile operator having previously been deployed on the left side of the midfield and out wide on the left wing alongside his usual role through the middle, so his ability to play in three different positions makes him a great option for the manager to have at his disposal.

Emery will undoubtedly begin the 2023/24 campaign with Watkins as his main attacker once again so Leonardo could find it hard to nail down a starting spot if the boss only opts to have one centre-forward up top, but he is definitely someone who could seriously push the former to up his game even more and compete for a regular place in the squad.

Newcastle vs Aston Villa Team News: Injury Blow For Howe

Newcastle United have received a big injury blow ahead of the new Premier League campaign, with a key midfielder set for a lengthy absence.

How old is Joe Willock?

Joe Willock has been an impressive servant for the Magpies to date, having made the move to St James' Park from Arsenal back in 2021. The 23-year-old has made 88 appearances to date, scoring 13 goals in that time, proving to be an energetic option who can shine both in midfield and out wide.

Newcastle begin their Premier League account with a home clash against Aston Villa on Saturday evening, as they look to kick on after a superb 2022/23 campaign – one that saw them finish fourth and seal a return to the Champions League.

Read the latest Newcastle transfer news HERE…

For that to happen, the Magpies need to bring in more signings and hope that they get fortunate in the injury department, but they have already received a blow, in that respect, following a fresh update.

Granit Xhaka of Arsenal and Joe Willock.

How long is Joe Willock out for?

According to The Athletic's George Caulkin, Willock will miss the beginning of the Premier League season, and isn't expected to return until after the international break next month:

"Newcastle United will be without Joe Willock until after the first international break. Willock, 23, has had discomfort in his hamstring following his serious injury which ruled him out of the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

"Newcastle have therefore elected to allow the midfielder to recover until the first international break, which begins on September 4."

While Willock isn't necessarily the first name on Newcastle's team sheet, not being as important as someone like Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak, for example, he remains an important squad figure. For that reason, this absence comes at a real setback for the Magpies, at a time when squad rotation is so key across four different competitions.

He has been described as "underestimated" by Joleon Lescott and Michael Owen in the past, while Steve Bruce once hailed him as a "terrific athlete", highlighting why he could be such a big loss in the coming weeks.

While Willock may not always be a player who makes headlines and produces match-winning moments, his work ethic is vital to the way Newcastle play, and he is the type of footballer whose energy may only be truly missed when he isn't available.

The hope is that the Magpies are able to get by without him, however, especially with Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes arriving from AC Milan and Leicester City respectively, so they do feel better-equipped to handle his absence.

Willock is someone who needs to be fit for much of the campaign, though, doing exactly what is asked of him when he plays, and chipping in with the odd goal and assist here and there.

Thankfully, there are only three Premier League fixtures to hurdle before the international break, so it could worse – admittedly, the games are tough ones at home to Villa, away to Manchester City and against Liverpool at St James' – but Newcastle are a better, more balance-looking outfit when he is around.

Essex close in on unbeaten record

Nick Browne and Dan Lawrence combined for a century third-wicket partnership that laid the foundations to enhance Essex’s remaining ambition of going through the Division One season unbeaten. The pair had put on an unbroken 128 stand to increase the champion county’s first-innings lead of 116 to 250 when bad light caused an early finish with eight overs remaining. At that point Browne was 53 from 134 balls and Lawrence 75 from 143.The Yorkshire bowlers toiled for 48 overs on a wicket that became slower and easier for batting the long the partnership went on. Browne and Lawrence started watchfully after Jack Brooks had removed Varun Chopra and Ravi Bopara in the space of three balls in his second over, both pinned plumb in front, and only six on the board. It was perhaps fortunate for Yorkshire they had claimed the points necessary to avoid relegation from Division One on day one, as they were dismissed for 111 in 46 overs by mid-afternoon on day two. Jamie Porter, Neil Wagner and Simon Harmer split nine of the wickets equally between themselves. Porter claimed his for 29 runs in 14 overs, Wagner at a personal cost of 21 from nine, and Harmer for 36.Browne and Lawrence got their heads down for a period of crease occupancy that was initially so obdurate that it was not until Lawrence’s 54th ball that he hit his first boundary, crashing Steven Patterson through the covers, to move from five to nine. The tempo went up noticeably as they approached the fifty partnership, reached in 23 overs, at which point Lawrence struck two fours in an over from Patterson. A flurry of boundaries followed, Lawrence’s seventh lofted back over Karl Carver’s head before the spinner suffered worse when Lawrence skipped down the wicket and launched a six over long leg.Lawrence beat Browne to half-a-century, clipping Ben Coad to the long-leg boundary for two. A measure of how his scoring sped up was that he needed just 49 balls to move from five to fifty, reached in 103 balls. The century partnership followed soon after from 36 overs.Browne’s fifty, which included five fours, three of them in two overs from Coad, took slightly longer after he became becalmed in the forties. A pushed single in the onside took him to the mark from 124 balls. When Yorkshire batted in the morning, Porter made the initial breakthrough on a pitch that had lost some of its spite of the first day. He produced one that nipped in late to remove Kraigg Brathwaite’s off-stump with the West Indian aiming through midwicket. Brathwaite had needed 21 balls to get off the mark, driving Porter to the cover boundary for three, but only added another single from the remaining seven deliveries faced.Adam Lyth showed no respect to Harmer when the off-spinner was introduced into the attack, pulling his first ball for four and lofting the second straight for six. However, three balls later, Alex Lees prodded forward to try and smother any turn and nicked behind to James Foster.Foster claimed a second catch when a quicker ball from Wagner moved away to end Lyth’s 52-ball innings on 35. Seven balls later and the New Zealand Test had a second wicket when he swung one back in to pin Jack Leaning lbw.Wagner had a hand in Yorkshire’s fifth wicket, too. Andrew Hodd straight-drove a full-toss and the bowler deflected on to the stumps with Gary Ballance, on unlucky 13, a foot out of his crease.Hodd went to the last ball before lunch, lbw to Wagner, before Matt Fisher and Patterson showed some resistance in the nine overs afterwards, while adding just eight runs. That sedate pace was the prelude to three wickets falling in 14 balls.Porter pinned Patterson lbw, Harmer had Brooks flashing outside off-stump to be snapped up behind, before Fisher exposed his stumps to give Porter a third wicket. The last pair took Yorkshire into three-figures before Harmer had Karl Carver trying to leave one alone, but gloving behind. Porter and Harmer now have 143 Championship wickets between them with one more innings left in which to improve the total.

Behrendorff focused only on debut against India

With James Pattinson joining Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood on the injury list, the Western Australia quick could be a potential dark horse for the Ashes, but he isn’t looking too far ahead

Arun Venugopal in Ranchi05-Oct-2017Even as Australia’s top quicks are either nursing injuries or limbering back to recovery, Jason Behrendorff has reaped the rewards of staying fit. With James Pattinson becoming the latest high-profile casualty, three of Australia’s A-list pace quartet – Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood being the other two – have been rendered out of action.Behrendorff, meanwhile, has earned a call-up to Australia’s T20I squad, and is in line to make his international debut against India. At 27, it isn’t as if he is a stranger to injuries himself. The left-arm seamer has been dogged by back and leg injuries in the recent past, with a stress fracture in his left leg ruling him out of the 2016-17 Big Bash League. Behrendorff, though, made a rousing comeback to first-class cricket by picking up 23 wickets in three games for Western Australia, including a 14-wicket haul against Victoria. With an impressive record across formats, including 53 T20 wickets from 38 matches, Behrendorff, selector Mark Waugh reckoned, “deserves his chance at this level.”Considering the number and frequency of injuries, there is speculation over Behrendorff being a potential dark horse for the Ashes. But, given his struggles with injuries and a background in sports science, Behrendorff is well aware of the fickle nature of injuries and doesn’t want to look beyond the T20I series.”I’m 100 percent focused on these games here and making my debut,” Behrendorff said. “It’s something I’ve worked so hard for so hopefully I’ll be able to play at least one of these three matches over the next week or so.”I am feeling really good at the moment. I’ve had an uninterrupted pre-season for a change which is the first time in a long time. I feel like my seasons have always started quite slow; so it’s something different this year, which is great. I feel my preparation has been great so far coming in from playing some pre-season games to playing in the JLT Cup back home. I played a couple of games there as well, so that’s been really positive. It showed last year when I had my build-up coming back from my leg injury, I was able to have a lot of match practice beforehand so I felt ready to go when I came back.”While Behrendorff admitted his experience in four-day cricket has made him a more confident bowler in the longer format, he recognised the need to be tactically smart in Indian conditions. “[It is] something we have spoken a little bit about,” he said. “The wickets over here are generally a lot different to the ones we play on back home. Change-ups… but the main thing is execution as well. Having your field set and bowling the right ball at the right time, that’s going to be huge.”Most of my cricket has been in four-day cricket so it’s something I’ve worked really hard at and I’m feeling more confident with how I’m going about it. It’s a format I really enjoy and I’m looking forward to starting the four-day summer when I get back home as well.”With Australia having lost the ODI series 4-1, there are questions about the team’s morale. As a newcomer to the set-up, Behrendorff knows he can do his bit to keep the mood of the squad upbeat. “The morale is really good. The boys that played in the one-day series have had a couple of days off and they have really had a good time relaxing and recovering,” he said. “There are five of us that have just joined the squad for the T20. We are full of energy, ready to go and really looking forward to an exciting series.”That’s something we speak about. Having a good attitude at training, good attitude at games making sure we are doing everything we can to be as upbeat and positive as we can all the time. That’s a big part of the new guys in the group – myself and the other guys who just flew in – to have that energy and bring that to the group and keep everyone buzzing. We know all the boys have done everything they need to do and will do over the next couple of days to be ready to go.”

Tottenham Could Unearth Perfect Hojbjerg Heir In £900-p/w "Leader"

As new Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou walked in the door earlier this summer, rumours were rife that the ex-Celtic boss was plotting something of a mass squad exodus in order to spark a rapid improvement on last season's collective woes.

Fast forward a few months, however, and the only notable sale has been that of Harry Winks to Championship side Leicester City, with that expected clearout having yet to take shape despite the raft of incomings that have arrived at N17.

One man who does look likely to be on his way before the close of the window is usual everpresent, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with 90min having suggested back in June that the Lilywhites were open to offers for the 27-year-old.

Will Tottenham sell Hojbjerg?

At present, it looks as if the Danish maestro – who has missed just five Premier League games across the last three seasons – is set to be on his way to La Liga side Atletico Madrid, with Football Insider claiming that such a sale could recoup a fee of around £25m.

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The belief is, however, that a departure for the former Southampton man – who made the move to the capital on a £15m deal back in 2020 – won't be sanctioned unless a replacement is found, with the likes of Conor Gallagher and Douglas Luiz having been mooted as potential options of late.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

Rather than splashing the cash on those figures – with Gallagher, in particular, reportedly set to fetch £50m – Postecoglou could save the club millions by looking to the academy ranks instead, with young Matthew Craig one such talent who could be deserving of a more prominent role in the first team.

Who is Matthew Craig?

It is fair to say that promoting from within was not too high on the agenda during Antonio Conte's time in charge, with reports indicating that staff at Tottenham had been left 'disillusioned' by the Italian's approach with regard to the academy – among other issues.

On current evidence, however, it looks as if Postecoglou could be a different kettle of fish, with football.london's Alasdair Gold writing only recently that the 57-year-old 'likes working with young players', hence bringing in the likes of Micky van de Ven (22) and Alejo Veliz (19).

As far as Craig is concerned, the 20-year-old midfielder will be hoping he can be a real beneficiary of that change in the dugout, with the Scotland youth international having already enjoyed a brief taste of senior action last term after making his top-flight debut on the final day against Leeds United.

Having signed a new deal last month that runs until 2026, the Barnet-born maestro is evidently a player that the north Londoners are excited about, with the aforementioned Gold hailing him for his versatility, as he can feature as a defensive midfielder or at centre-back and full-back if required.

Of course, the loss of an experienced figure like Hojbjerg – who has been described as a 'fantastic leader' by former youth coach John Ranum – would leave something of a void in the centre of the park, although having also dubbed himself a "leader", Craig may be ready to step up to the plate.

One notable strength that the youngster possesses is his creative quality as he recorded five assists in 26 Premier League 2 games last term, with that same number as what Hojbjerg racked up in the top flight from 35 outings.

Equally, while the latter man showcased his ball-winning strength in 2022/23 after averaging 1.5 tackles per game, young Craig recorded the same average from his two EFL Trophy appearances last term, thus illustrating that he is on track to emulate the one-time Bayern Munich man.

Although it would be a gamble for Postecoglou to put his faith in the £900-per-week playmaker, the Greek-Aussie should well be keen to showcase that his tenure will be different to the last, with the academy not merely something of an afterthought…
