Crystal Palace duo in line for new deals

James McArthur and Jordan Ayew are in line for new contracts at Crystal Palace, according to London World’s Rahman Osman.

The lowdown

McArthur had started every Premier League game since Patrick Vieira took charge before tearing his hamstring against Wolves.

WhoScored have the Scotsman as Palace’s third-strongest performer this season with an average rating of 6.94/10. Only Christian Benteke (7.16) and Conor Gallagher (7.5) can better that.

Ayew has also been a favourite of the new boss, starting nine of his first 12 PL matches.

Like McArthur, Ayew has only a matter of months left to run on his current agreement. The pair are valued at £1.8million and £7.2million respectively by Transfermarkt.

The latest

McArthur will be rewarded with a new deal ‘in the coming months’ after making a ‘brilliant start to the season’.

Vieira ‘recently gave the green light’ for McArthur to be granted an extension. He’s agreed to commit for another year, and the ‘final details’ just need to be sorted out.

Elsewhere, ‘talks are ongoing’ over a new contract for Ayew, but Osman will report ‘more on that later’.

‘Crystal Palace are working’ to tie some of their ‘key players’ down.

The verdict

It’s no surprise to see Palace look to agree fresh terms with McArthur. The stats attest to his effectiveness in their midfield.

But it’s perhaps harder to make the case for Ayew, who has only scored once in his last 55 appearances for the club.

Vieira, though, may value him for his defensive contribution. Data from FBRef shows that he ranks in the 99th percentile among positional peers in the top five leagues for pressures per 90 minutes, and in the 95th for tackles.

In other news, fans showed their appreciation for this moment.

India Blue hold nerve to clinch thriller

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outAshok Dinda proved to be the hero for India Blue, and not just with the ball•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Suresh Kumar’s 87 proved decisive, as India Blue held on for a thrilling one-wicket win against India Red at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. Suresh was the lynchpin even as wickets kept falling around him, playing a big hand in ensuring victory. Ashok Dinda, though, had the final word. Having picked three wickets earlier, he hit the boundary which sealed the match in Blues’ favour after they needed seven off the last over with just the one wicket in hand. The chase was well-planned, as Suresh played the anchor’s role to perfection, even as Ishant Sharma struck at either ends of the innings. Harbhajan Singh, promoted to No.3 after a good day with the ball, lent good support with a run-a-ball 36. When captain MS Dhoni departed for 37 with the score 161 for 5, the match was tantalisingly poised.Suresh continued to graft away and soon brought up his fifty in style, clubbing Sudeep Tyagi over long-on for a six. With Jalaj Saxena and Yusuf Pathan departing soon, he was running fast out of partners, though the equation was firmly in Blues’ favour. Two fours in Ishant’s ninth over had them in sight of the finish line, yet a final sting in the tale remained. Looking for a quick finish, Suresh mishit a slower one from Ishant and Ravindra Jadeja made no mistake running in from mid-on. That was the end of the 47th over. The task could not have looked more imposing, with 12 required off 18 and Dinda and Siddharth Trivedi to come. Munaf Patel, who otherwise had a day to forget, struck in his penultimate over, rearranging Sreesanth’s stumps with the second ball. Ishant followed the act, giving away four in the 49th over. The Red captain S Badrinath was a nervous man, as Munaf ran in for his final over. A full delivery first up was hit in the air over cover by Dinda, and the batsmen sneaked a couple. A short ball followed, which was pulled along the ground through midwicket for another two. Another terrible delivery from Munaf wa unpardonable, and Dinda pulled it in the air behind square leg to the fence to seal the win.For close to 35 overs, Red held the reins and looked good to reach 300-plus. However, the Blue bowlers pulled things back to bowl them out for a sub-par 248 inside 45 overs on a good batting track. Harshad Khadiwale and Ishank Jaggi made brisk half-centuries but the lower order failed to build on that platform.Red were powered by a solid start from their openers M Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan. Vijay scored at over a run a ball but fell when giving Harbhajan the charge, Naman Ojha snapping up the inside edge. Dhawan’s dismissal was very similar, and it was a smart move by Ojha to stand up for the seamer Trivedi, who cut back on his pace to keep the batsmen in check. Red stumbled further when Badrinath was run out after a terrible mix-up and some repair work was needed. Khadiwale and Jaggi stepped up with a stand of 49 for the fourth wicket. Khadiwale fell shortly after getting to his fifty, tamely mistiming a pull off Dinda.Jaggi, the right-hander from Jharkhand, maintained the momentum with a brisk innings that included five fours and a six. However, he failed to push on after reaching his fifty, edging Yusuf Pathan to Ojha while attempting a cut. Blue continued to chip away at the wickets – even Dhoni rolled his arm over and picked up a wicket – and Red looked in danger of not lasting their full quota of overs. By the time they took the batting Powerplay in the 45th over, they had already lost nine wickets. Harbhajan was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 for 40. But the real drama would pan out in the next 50 overs.

Exciting Kessie to Spurs news drops

Taking to Twitter, journalist Rudy Galetti of Sportitalia has just dropped an exciting Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving AC Milan star Franck Kessie.

The Lowdown: Spurs target Kessie deal…

Amid his precarious contract situation at the San Siro, with his current deal set to expire in 2022, Spurs are seemingly among the clubs interested in signing Kessie as a free agent next summer.

Even before the arrival of new manager Antonio Conte in what is a phenomenal appointment, the Lilywhites have been heavily linked with a move for Milan’s midfield enforcer with approaches having already been made.

Calciomercato claimed back in September that Spurs made an offer to Kessie and his entourage of around €8 million-per-season (£6.7m) to try and convince the player.

After Conte’s arrival at N17, reports of Tottenham’s interest have only escalated with La Gazzetta dello Sport (Get Italian Football News) even saying that the club are in very advanced talks over an agreement with the player.

Now, a fellow source from Italy has taken the story one step further in an exciting claim.

The Latest: Galetti makes exciting claim…

Taking to social media, the Sportitalia reporter says that Spurs now have a ‘close agreement’ to sign Kessie.

He also tips a salary of around €10 million-per-season (£8.4m) with a maximum commission for the player’s agent.

The Verdict: Get it done…

We believe the potential signing of Kessie would be Paratici’s biggest masterstroke yet and the ideal first signing of Conte’s era in charge of the club.

An all-round midfield general, the 48-cap international already has plenty of experience on the biggest stages at a fairly young age and landing him for free would be an incredible piece of business.

Bypassing his lofty market valuation, estimated to be around £49.5 million, Kessie’s contract situation at the San Siro could be Tottenham and Conte’s biggest gain.

He would certainly add steel and composure to the Spurs midfield area going by his superior pass success rate compared to every Spurs regular with more than one start.

Kessie has completed a brilliant 90.8% of his passes to teammates so far in Serie A, more than any Lilywhites man who’s played over 90 minutes of football in the Premier League.

He also adds goals – with two in the league already this season and 13 last – and bite in the middle of the park, boasting 1.5 tackles per game this term in the Italian top flight, per Whoscored.

He could be exactly the type of figure Tottenham need as they aim to get back in among the best in Europe.

Heroes, handbags and halfwits

Stand of the dayJames Anderson has never made a Test duck in six years as an international cricketer, and it was as if he had been in training for this very day. In partnership with Monty Panesar, a man whose style has been likened by Graeme Swann to Yuvraj Singh but whose very presence at the crease brings England fans out in palpitations, he dug for the draw that has ignited the 2009 Ashes. For 11 overs and three balls, the pair ground out 19 runs to turn an innings defeat into the sweetest draw in Ashes cricket since Australia’s great escape at Old Trafford four years ago.Man of the dayThe ball was wide and hardly worthy of a shot, certainly not from a man whose guts and self-denial had put his chancier, flashier team-mates to shame for five-and-three-quarter hours and 245 balls. But the extra bounce of the new ball does strange things to even the most well-set of batsmen. An indeterminate flash outside off sent the ball skidding flat and hard to Mike Hussey in the gully, who parried it at first, and then gratefully clasped onto the rebound as the entire ground sucked in its breath. Poor Paul Collingwood could only slump at the crease, aghast at the manner in which he’d sacrificed his defining innings. A standing ovation ensued, but he could barely raise his head in acknowledgement as he sloped away from the field.Cheer of the dayAnderson’s stabbed steers through third man off consecutive Peter Siddle deliveries that carried England into the lead with half-an-hour of the match remaining. More than the runs scored, crucial though they were, it was the overs saved that were even more invaluable. Suddenly 12 precious balls for the innings change-around had been sawn off the day’s remaining allocation, and England needed to prod their way through just five more overs of the day …Handbags of the dayPerhaps it was Kevin Pietersen’s personal attempt to revive the spirit of 2005 (when Simon Jones threw a ball at Matthew Hayden’s shoulder at Edgbaston and all the England boys rushed in to back him up, blah blah blah …) but this morning, when he belted a practice ball into a crowd of Aussies during the pre-play warm-ups, he might as well have thrown a rock at a hornet’s nest. Mitchell Johnson came buzzing out to confront him, no doubt informing him that his missus is a karate black-belt, and it took some statesmanlike intervention from Stuart Clark to diffuse the situation. Australia’s desire to crush the Poms, never really in doubt at any stage, had been heightened all the more.Breakthroughs of the dayIn terms of Ashes spinners, Nathan Hauritz entered the game with a lowlier reputation than even Ashley Giles, but in the first session of the final day, he claimed two staggeringly valuable scalps that seemed sure to set Australia on their way to a crushing victory. Both were extracted through the medium of extra bounce, as first Andrew Strauss flashed a cut into the gloves of Brad Haddin, and then Matt Prior poked a late cut into the hands of Michael Clarke. When he followed up with a skidder to pin Stuart Broad lbw, he had beaten England’s spin-twins, Panesar and Swann, by six wickets to one.Misjudgement of the dayWhen you’ve been castigated for reaching three feet outside your off stump to sweep a potential wide into the hands of short leg, what better way to respond to your critics than to shoulder arms to a straight one? That was the route to vindication that Pietersen chose, although the net effect was to raise a whole new line of questioning about his judgement. Joking aside, it is increasingly noticeable how Pietersen tends to be squared up by full-length deliveries on off stump, as his recent dismissals at Kingston and Lord’s have also shown.Peppering of the dayUntil Hilfenhaus bagged him with the new ball, Graeme Swann had not been dismissed in any Test innings since December. If Peter Siddle was aware of this peculiar fact, he made it his business to ensure that Swann left the field by whatever means today – and preferably on a stretcher. In a brutal 70th over, the penultimate of the second session, Siddle smashed Swann on the body three times in four balls – first on the left index finger, then on the right elbow, then on the right hand. A snarling Siddle followed up that final hit with a stream of choice invective, no doubt riled by two earlier visits from the physio, and then three overs into the final session, pinged him flush on the helmet as Swann nutted the ball down to third man for two lid-byes.Celebration of the dayIt was not so much a celebration, more an accusation. When Collingwood reached his fifty, from 167 ceaselessly determined balls, his bat-wave to the dressing-room contained more than a hint of menace. There was nothing remotely cheery about the pointed jab of the blade that he stabbed in their direction. It was as if he was saying: “You lot got us into this situation, I’ll get us out of it. Again.” (And no doubt face his usual calls to be dropped next week when England have maintained their proud tradition of failing to beat Australia at Lord’s for three-quarters of a century.)Pitch invaders of the dayA pair of halfwits had to be ejected from the ground in the afternoon session when they broke the stumps at the Cathedral Road end in a bid for self-publicity, but they weren’t half as unwelcome as the visit from the physio in the dying minutes of the day. He jogged out to the middle with Ponting spitting tacks, and did little more than tap Anderson on the shoulder before being evicted abruptly by the umpires. It was all a little cynical, frankly.Snaffler of the dayRicky Ponting may have carved out his role as the elder statesmen of his team, but his reflexes around the bat have not dimmed an iota – and nor his combative spirit. Two moments in particular exemplified both facts. Firstly the stooping catch at second slip to prise a reluctant Andrew Flintoff from the crease – “I caught it, I caught it, mate, I caught it!” he commanded as he rushed up to celebrate with his team-mates. And so, indeed, he had. In the final hour, however, came an even more critical moment, when Collingwood propped forward to Hauritz, and Ponting at silly point launched himself to his right to cling onto a sensational take. Once again, he was adamant that he had got his man, but Aleem Dar had already turned down the first appeal, for lbw. And once again, the decision was spot on.

Big Picture

Australia are back on top of the world in both Tests and ODIs during their trip to South Africa, but the teams are so tightly matched that the one-day honour will return to the hosts if they win the five-match series. The visitors, who lost the two Twenty20s, switched on in the opening contest for a 141-run victory in Durban and they will walk out at Centurion seeking more success.South Africa were out-played throughout game one and have some serious work to do on their batting to manage a swift turnaround. They lasted only 33.1 overs in making 145 as Nathan Hauritz, the occasionally-employed offspinner, did most of the damage. Australia were relieved at the strong showing from Michael Hussey, who was unbeaten on 83, and will chase a repeat performance from their bowlers.

Watch out for

South Africa are desperate – and hopeful – Jacques Kallis will be back after a groin problem ruled him out of the opening encounter. The home side was caught short on Friday, with Mark Boucher at No. 6, and will benefit if Kallis’ all-round skills are on show. “He does help a lot with your balance,” Graeme Smith told AAP. “In Australia we played an extra batter and he allows you to do that. You can look for 20 overs between him and Albie Morkel and JP Duminy. To have him back obviously would be nice.”It’s not often Nathan Hauritz is on the warning list, but after his 4 for 29 on Friday he will come in for extra attention. The Durban ODI was his first match of the tour, but he hadn’t spent the time topping up his suntan or chasing big game sightings. “All the early-morning training sessions that he has done and all the work that he has done with the bowling coaches on his bowling has paid dividends,” Ricky Ponting said.

Team news

Expect some reshuffling if Kallis makes it back, with Boucher dropping a place and one of the bowlers missing out. Morne Morkel looks vulnerable unless Dale Steyn or Makhaya Ntini are due for a rest.South Africa squad Graeme Smith (capt), Herschelle Gibbs, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis, JP Duminy, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Mark Boucher (wk), Roelof van der Merwe, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Johan Botha, Dale Steyn, Wayne Parnell, Makhaya Ntini.Australia will give thought to keeping an unchanged line-up after such a convincing display on Friday. However, they may consider bringing in Brett Geeves for Ben Laughlin, who gave up 28 runs in five overs on his ODI debut.Australia squad Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin (wk), Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, David Hussey, Callum Ferguson, Marcus North, James Hopes, Cameron White, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Brett Geeves, Nathan Bracken, Ben Laughlin.

Stats and Trivia

  • Australia will keep the No. 1 ranking with a 3-2 victory while South Africa can take it back if they secure the series
  • If Australia win 4-1 the hosts will slip to third on the table behind India

Quotes

“It was nice just to get a good start and hopefully on Sunday I can make it count more.”
after returning from a broken hand with a half-century”We’ve played well but we have to turn things around and make sure we do everything probably even better on Sunday, because you’d expect South Africa to bounce back. There’s some room for improvement in our set-up as well.”

Hutton comments on Nathan Patterson injury

Alan Hutton has commented on the injury sustained by Rangers’ Nathan Patterson on international duty.

What’s the latest?

The former Ibrox full-back has claimed that the 19-year-old’s injury whilst away with Scotland is a strange situation.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke refused to go into detail regarding the injury and Hutton believes it is a frustrating, and surprising, blow for the defender.

He told Football Insider: “It will be frustrating, especially after such a good performance.

“Everybody, rightly so, has been talking him up. He’s the future of Scotland so far Steve Clarke to be missing him for this game is a big blow.

“The circumstances, we don’t really know what knock it is. Nothing’s really come out. It didn’t look like he was carrying anything while he was playing it. He was energetic up and down the line so it’s a bit of a strange one.

“Hopefully it’s not too bad because obviously, going back to Rangers, he is looking to push Tavernier all the way this season.

“He’ll want to keep fit and build on the momentum that he’s got through this Scotland camp.”

Concern

Steven Gerrard will be concerned by Patterson’s situation as it remains unclear exactly what has happened to him, making it a worrying update. He will presumably be heading back to Glasgow for tests with Rangers’ medical staff so they can assess the knock and determine how serious it is, but as it stands its mysterious nature could be a cause for concern for the Gers boss.

As Hutton said, it is also a frustrating blow for Gerrard and Patterson. The 19-year-old played the full 90 minutes as Scotland beat Moldova 1-0, recording a solid WhoScored rating of 6.76. He made one tackle and three interceptions whilst playing as a right midfielder, instead of his regular right-back position, as he displayed his defensive nous.

Patterson averaged WhoScored ratings of 6.78 and 6.94 in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League respectively last term, playing nine games between the two competitions. This suggests that he has the quality to come in and provide a respectable standard of performance when called upon by Gerrard, which is why his absence with a potentially long-term injury would be a blow for Gers.

Whilst James Tavernier is the first-choice right-back at Ibrox, Gerrard could need to turn to Patterson if the former Newcastle man is missing through injury or suspension himself, which is why he will be frustrated by this ‘strange’ situation.

Patterson could also be seen as the long-term successor to Tavernier, who turns 30 next month, which means that the Gers boss may want to slowly ease him into playing more regularly to make the transition easier for him further down the line.
