Brasil de Pelotas: Marcelo Pitol; Leandro Camilo, Nirley e Rafael Dumas; Tiago Cametá, Leandro Leite, Itaqui, Alex Ruan e Pereira; Lourency e Michel.

E com o time compacto.

Uncertainty remains over Ishant's fitness

The uncertainty around Ishant Sharma’s ankle remained as he didn’t bowl during India’s training session on the eve of their three-day match against the Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI. He was present with the team at the Manuka Oval, though. He played the football game that India play before their training sessions, and took part in light fielding drills too, but did not bowl.Ishant has been advised two-days’ rest by a specialist in Canberra, and is a sure non-starter for the tour game that begins on December 19. But the match is not a first-class fixture, which means he can be drafted in on for the second or third day if he recovers.Ishant bowled only 5.3 overs in India’s first tour game, walking off twice during that brief spell. The Indian camp said that day that Ishant was anyway going to bowl only six overs, and when the strapping on the ankle came loose with three deliveries left in the quota he felt no need to come back. Zaheer Khan and Rohit Sharma later said the injury wasn’t serious. It has now emerged that Ishant saw a specialist and has been prescribed strengthening exercises and rest. There is a possibility that the Indian team management might ask for a cover, just in case Ishant can’t make it for the Boxing Day Test. However, that decision is not expected until late on Sunday or Monday.Ishant had originally hurt the ankle in England. It was earlier suggested that he would need surgery on the ankle, but found out that it healed with physiotherapy at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.India have had a horror run with fast bowlers’ fitness on overseas tours. New Zealand 2008-09 was the last time they didn’t have to deal with an injury to fast bowler. In Sri Lanka 2010, Zaheer was ruled out before the start, and Sreesanth was injured during training on the first day of the tour. Later that year, in South Africa, Zaheer missed the first Test. This year Zaheer got injured on the first day of Test cricket in England, and didn’t bowl further in the series. India lost all three first Tests. They managed to come back and level series in Sri Lanka and South Africa, but were whitewashed in England.

Decision to play is player's call – IPL chief

The decision to play is a player’s call and no player is forced to represent his club or country, particularly when it’s a case of injury, the IPL chief Sundar Raman has said. “I think it has always been up to the player to decide,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “Firstly, he has to see whether he is fit or not. And the BCCI physio will take a look at the player and subject to a satisfactory report, he plays.”The player knows his body better than anyone else does and I don’t think I want to sit in judgement on that. If the physio believes that the player is not fit to play a game, he would report that and the player would not play the game.”Nobody is forced to play. Nobody is forced to play for the country. Nobody is forced to play for their club.”Concerns over players playing despite injuries have come to the fore following Gautam Gambhir’s shoulder injury sustained during the World Cup and aggravated during the IPL. Gambhir, who captains Kolkata Knight Riders, played in his team’s eliminator play-off on Wednesday hours after the team physio Andrew Leipus wrote to the BCCI that Gambhir needed four to six weeks’ rest to recover. Gambhir, however, claimed he had not been aware of the seriousness of the injury and had not discussed the matter with Leipus prior to the game.Raman refused to comment on the Gambhir issue. “I am honestly not in a position to comment on the Gambhir situation because the Indian physio has to see Gambhir, submit his report, take a view on whether he was fit not fit so it is too premature for me to say right now.”However, he added: “I don’t think any player would want to carry or feign an injury and continue to go and play. A player knows his body. I believe they are professionals and if the player is injured, if there are any practices or processes that have not been put in place, that is for the administrative part of it to ensure that all of that is taken care of.”The player takes the view of somebody who is an expert in that field and I think that’s the way it is. I am looking at it as what would I have done? I would have listened to my body.”

Sangakkara praises middle-order

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara praised his brittle middle-order batting for carrying his team to the final of the World Cup after they beat New Zealand

Sa'adi Thawfeeq30-Mar-2011Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara praised his brittle middle-order batting for carrying his team to the final of the World Cup after they beat New Zealand by five wickets in Colombo on Tuesday. Chasing New Zealand’s moderate total of 217, Sri Lanka were cruising to victory at 160 for 1 when a sudden top-order collapse – four wickets fell for 25 runs – left them looking vulnerable, before the experience of Thilan Samaraweera and the flair of Angelo Mathews (batting with a runner due to a thigh strain) saw Sri Lanka through.”The middle order won the match for us. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about,” an elated Sangakkara said. “I always said if you give them the opportunity they would deliver. They got it today in very tense circumstances. We are very happy what they’ve done.”Samaraweera and Mathews added 35 crucial runs for the sixth wicket to carry Sri Lanka to their second successive World Cup final. They will meet the winners of Wednesday’s second semi-final between India and Pakistan in the final on Saturday. Sangakkara blamed himself for not seeing Sri Lanka through to victory after the openers had got them off to a rapid start once again.”The responsibility should have been on me and [Tillakaratne] Dilshan. Dilhan did his job and I should have seen the match through. I played one shot too many and our dismissals put a lot of pressure on the middle order and they came out very well.”We got tensed in the end basically because Dilshan and I should have finished it off or got as close as possible at least to the 200 mark. We let that opportunity go and put the side under a bit of pressure. Dilshan batted brilliantly, he and Upul (Tharanga) gave us another great start. Upul was out to a fantastic catch by Jesse Ryder when he was batting beautifully.Sangakkara: The middle order won the match for us. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.•AFP

“My job was to hang around with Dilshan and build a partnership, but with two down and 60 runs to go on hindsight it was good for the middle order to show us what they can do as well. Thilan did exactly what was expected of him, Chamara Silva chipped in and Angelo Mathews as usual finished it up for us.”It was the second time in successive knockout matches that Sri Lanka had chased and won under lights. “We won two matches chasing because we lost the toss not because of anything else. If we had won the toss we would have batted first,” Sangakkara said. “Chasing and winning does a lot more for your confidence than batting first and defending because you got the bowling attack to defend. You just need to see off ourselves how well we do in a chase especially in two crunch games. I thought New Zealand adapted to the conditions a lot better.”They always have the variety to trouble us at home because they have the bits and pieces cricketers and quality spinners. But today the wicket was really great it didn’t take a huge amount of spin and actually the seam bowlers were a bit more difficult to attack than spin.”Reaching a World Cup final was the culmination of a long journey and careful planning, Sangakkara said. “We planned for it for over two years. We missed a great opportunity in 2007. Ours was to recreate those opportunities in 2011 and to be there is very special for us. If we had not won the World Cup in 1996 we wouldn’t have come to this level. We must thank players like Murali [Muralitharan], Vaasy [Chaminda Vaas], Sanath [Sanath Jayasuriya], Aravinda de Silva and Arjuna [Ranatunga].”From that winning side only one member is with us and that is Murali. The amount of input he has given to us we cannot measure. If you take his bowling and his character he has played a big part in our cricket. Not only the players but the rest of Sri Lanka look at him as someone special.”The game was Muralitharan’s final appearance in an ODI at home and he was rightfully given a lap of honour at the end of the match. “It was a bit emotional because it was the last game we were playing in front of our home crowd. The next match is not going to be here. It was a very special moment for us and even more so because it is the last time Murali will ever play an ODI. When the magnitude of that occasion hits you it kind of overwhelms you.”In his farewell Test against India last year, Muralitharan took his 800th wicket with the last ball he bowled in Test cricket. Against New Zealand, he again took a wicket off the final ball he bowled in his final ODI appearance at home.”The good thing about Murali is he has no ego and he is a great team man,” Sangakarra said. “Why these kind of fairytale endings keep happening to him is because he is a great human being. He has a great heart, he is an honest hardworking guy and he has no pretenses about it. When he is such a nice guy good things happen to him.”Looking ahead at the final on Saturday, Sangakkara said, “Kicking off from here it is easy to get carried away. We won a semi-final but we haven’t won a final. We are in the final, we need to keep our heads down and keep playing good cricket. There is a lot of work to do in the next three days to play in the biggest match of our lives.”It means a great deal especially in a new future that is envisioned for Sri Lanka. For us to be in this position, to host a World Cup and for the Sri Lankan team to get into a final it bodes well for the future of our country. Cricket’s always been the panacea that’s healed all wounds in Sri Lanka. Whenever cricket is played it seems as if life was back to normal. We carry that responsible job and it has been with us whenever we played. We understand the gravity of work but we also understand what privilege it is to be able to represent our country.”Every single match we play is for our country. What people outside don’t see is the greatest pride we have when we don our national colours. You go to the dressing room and there is a national flag with every player above their seat before we go out to play.”

Rangers transfer news on Josh McPake

Alex McLeish has now dropped a Glasgow Rangers transfer claim involving Josh McPake.

The Lowdown: McPake free to leave Rangers

As per Football Insider, a source from Ibrox has revealed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst and co have now given the ‘green light’ for the 20-year-old to leave in the summer, as he is ‘surplus to requirements’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They have personally ‘told’ McPake that he can go after his loan spell at Tranmere Rovers ends this season.

The Latest: McLeish reacts to McPake latest

Speaking to Football Insider, former Light Blues manager McLeish has given his reaction to the news, claiming that Rangers should be looking to sell players like McPake who do not quite make the grade.

The 63-year-old said: “If they can generate some big money for these sorts of players they feel are not up to the required level, then why not?

“That’s good business. Chelsea have done it over a vast number of years.

“Chelsea have got these players in and later on down the line, they’ve secured big fees for them – and there are plenty of other clubs who have done the same. Why not Rangers?

“It really does take a lot to play at the Scottish Premiership level for Rangers. The demands it comes with are massive, and you can’t always get it right.

“There won’t always be players coming off the conveyor belt, but if there’s a method of raising big money for players who can’t make the grade – then it’s a no-brainer.”

The Verdict: Sell

Having been sent out on loan no fewer than five times by the Gers over the course of his fledgling career so far, it is now time for both McPake and the Ibrox club to part ways for good.

He has only managed one senior Gers appearance, which came in a Europa League qualifier in July 2019, and at 20 years of age, he needs to move on from the club once and for all in order to enjoy more regular first-team football.

It is a shame for the player, who came through the youth ranks at Rangers and was sufficiently regarded to be given a new deal just last year, but this summer feels like the perfect time to let McPake go, so long as the club can get a decent fee for him.

Rajasthan pick four as franchises focus on Ranji final

Rajasthan Royals have picked four players from the Rajasthan Ranji squad as a part of their uncapped basket. Aakash Chopra is the most prominent name among the pickings

Nagraj Gollapudi and Abhishek Purohit11-Jan-2011Rajasthan Royals have picked four players from the Rajasthan Ranji squad and Mumbai batsman Ajinkya Rahane as a part of their uncapped basket. Aakash Chopra is the most prominent name among the Rajasthan players signed with the other three being middle-order batsman Ashok Menaria, seamer Deepak Chahar and wicketkeeper Dishant Harendra Yagnik. Along with Chopra, who moved to Rajasthan as a professional from his home state of Delhi this season, both Menaria and Chahar’s spectacular performances helped Rajasthan reach the Ranji Trophy final after 36 years.Rahane has been a prolific scorer in domestic cricket, and averages 69.01 from 47 first-class games, and 40.41 from 43 List A matches. He was a crucial factor in Mumbai’s 38th and 39th Ranji title wins, making 1089 and 809 runs.”We are pretty happy with what we have got,” Sean Morris, the Rajasthan franchise’s CEO, said. Morris also explained how Chopra, a former India Test opener, was an uncapped player. “According to the IPL rules if a player has not played for India in the last five seasons he automatically becomes uncapped,” he said. Chopra, who played the first two IPL seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders, confirmed the development.Meanwhile Rajasthan’s Ranji captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar has been approached by Kochi. “We are talking to him,” Mehul Shah, one of the Kochi owners said. It is also understood that Pune Warriors have come to an agreement with Kamran Khan, the left-arm fast bowler who played for Rajasthan in the second IPL, but was sent back midway during the campaign to correct his action, which was found to be questionable.Kolkata Knightriders have sent in “10-12” requests to IPL for players they would be interested in. Royal Challengers Bangalore were negotiating with hometown boy Mayank Agarwal, who was part of the India Under-19 World Cup team last year. The Baroda Ranji side has attracted attention as well, with captain Pinal Shah, left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt, allrounder Swapnil Singh, batsman Kedar Devdhar and seamer Murtuja Vahora said to be in advanced stages of discussions with some franchises. Two days after the auction, all ten franchises have been frantically hunting for quality uncapped players, a scarce commodity in Indian cricket. Various team owners rushed to Baroda hours after the weekend auction to woo players like Ambati Rayudu, one of the performers in IPL 2010 and a vital part of Mumbai Indians’ run to the final. The buzz at the Moti Bagh ground was in contrast to the Ranji semi-final, which was played at the Reliance Stadium in Baroda, watched mostly by journalists, a handful of spectators, and a few stray dogs. Not that the cricket so far has been attractive enough to drive fans to the ground, but the rush among the IPL franchises to sign uncapped domestic players suddenly turned the spotlight on a domestic match.Siddhartha Mallya, owner of Bangalore, checked in on Monday morning as teams were getting ready for the final net season before the final day. While Mallya was one of the early IPL birds to arrive in Vadodara, there are reports that many more are headed to the city which is home to Chirayu Amin, head of the IPL governing council, and also the president of the Baroda Cricket Association. Among those expected to arrive tomorrow are Manoj Badale, co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals, Ness Wadia, co-owner of the Kings XI Punjab, and Geoff Lawson, coach of the Kochi team. Amin himself was at the ground today, and apparently it was one of the extremely rare occasions on which the president has been seen at a domestic match in Vadodara.
