Rodrigo Caio fez coro ao discurso unânime no São Paulo de que o time só não venceu o Corinthians neste domingo porque o árbitro Wagner do Nascimento Magalhães, do quadro da Fifa e da Federação de Futebol do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FERJ). Mas o zagueiro foi além: culpou uma suposta preferência clubística da imprensa pelos erros que apontou do juiz.

– Muitas vezes, quando a gente joga contra o Corinthians, a arbitragem entra pressionada porque a gente vê que a imprensa toda é corintiana, vê que muitas pessoas só falam a favor do Corinthians. E tenho certeza que o árbitro entra pressionado.

O camisa 3, que deu apenas uma rápida declaração antes de deixar o Morumbi, não se conforma com as arbitragens nos jogos do time em casa. Lembrou até do pênalti marcado sobre Rildo, quando foi tocado por Bruno, na derrota por 2 a 1 para o Coritiba, em 3 de agosto.

Na jogada seguinte, o Lucas Fernandes assume a falta que ele nem tinha visto, e ele deu o cartão que não deu para o Maycon. São decisões que temos que rever – reclamou Rodrigo Caio.

– Quem tirou a nossa vitória não foi o Corinthians, foi a arbitragem. Não podemos aceitar isso, vem acontecendo muito. É lamentável isso, triste, porque, pela partida que fizemos, não merecíamos o empate – prosseguiu.

Cueva quebrou o silêncio nesta segunda-feira. Após preferir alfinetar Rodrigo Caio a se pronunciar no último sábado após o empate com a Ponte Preta, o meia peruano concedeu entrevista coletiva e se desculpou com o companheiro. Cueva disse que errou ao interpretar mal as críticas do zagueiro, feitas na semana passada. Eles tiveram uma conversa nesta segunda antes do treino e, aparentemente, apararam as arestas.

-Nós nos falamos por Whatsapp e, hoje, conversamos. Foi bom. Depois de tudo isso, também falamos com o grupo. Mas quero falar que o erro foi meu. Na semana passada, falaram o que o Rodrigo falou de mim, não escutei ele falar, só vi a imprensa. Foi um erro meu e peço desculpas ao meu companheiro, que é um cara legal – afirmou o peruano.

Na sequência, o camisa 10 admitiu que esse tipo de coisa não ajuda e cravou que o São Paulo não será rebaixado no Campeonato Brasileiro. A equipe ocupa a 19ª colocação no Brasileiro, com 24 pontos.

-Sabemos a situação que estamos. Não adianta falar algo que não vai ajudar o grupo. Entendemos a torcida, mas o grupo, independentemente de tudo que aconteceu, sabe que vai sair dessa. O São Paulo é grande. Não vai cair – decretou Cueva.

A reação do peruano se deve a comentário feito por Rodrigo Caio na quinta-feira passada. Perguntado por que o peruano não rendia no clube o que apresentava na seleção e se precisava melhorar, o zagueiro disse:

-Situação difícil. Acho que é muito pelo momento que a gente vive. É difícil o jogador desempenhar o seu melhor. Já passei por muitas coisas aqui. Ainda mais para ele, que articula todas nossas jogadas. Mas ele também sabe, sabe que tem de melhorar. A gente tenta ajudá-lo, mas ele também tem de se ajudar, crescer, querer melhorar. Ele tem consciência disso. Esperamos que ele volte bem, focado, concentrado, e possa nos ajudar bastante.

No sábado, após o duelo contra a Ponte, Cueva passou pela zona mista e, ao ser perguntado por um jornalista, se daria entrevista, ele se recusou e mandou:

– Fala com Rodrigo Caio. O Rodrigo Caio que vai falar.

Por essas e outras, falou nesta segunda-feira com a imprensa. Ele não vive boa fase no time e ficou no banco de reservas contra a Ponte, dando lugar a Lucas Fernandes. Após o jogo, o técnico Dorival Júnior defendeu o peruano e disse que ele pode voltar ao time ao lado de Lucas.

Acompanhe outros trechos da coletiva do meia peruano nesta segunda. No fim, ele pediu a palavra e fez um pronunciamento:

– Quero falar uma coisa. Nunca vou me esconder do meu grupo em momentos ruins, como em momentos bons. Nos momentos ruins, sempre vou aparecer.

Não vou falar sobre isso. Mas estou em clube grande e sempre estou pressionado. mas a conversa que tivemos é interno, não vou falar. Como não falam sobre conversas com a família.

Ser cobrado pelos colegas
A palavra cobrado não sabe como usam aqui. Cobrado é que o cara faça as coisas direito, da melhor maneira. E esse é o trabalho de todos. Do Cueva, do Rodrigo Caio, Lugano, Petros, Pratto. Todos temos o objetivo. Independentemente de quem jogue ou não, temos que trabalhar juntos para siar da zona de rebaixamento e, depois, pensar em outra coisa.

Propostas para sair
Falaram muito que tive proposta e estou chateado porque não saí, mas isso é secundário. Vim ao São Paulo porque quis, porque sei como o São Paulo é grande. Uma proposta do estrangeiro será tratada internamente. Mas meu rendimento não caiu por causa disso.

Reunião com a torcida
A torcida está em seu direito. Também passam por um momento duro. Só queremos que seja uma conversa para somar. Nada além disso.

Hernanes
Hernanes é tão importante quanto todos. É um jogador que todos conhecem, tem a imagem do clube, como Lugano. Veio a somar e ajuda muito, e ensina muito como jogador e pessoa. Só vamos reverter a situação com trabalho. Estando todos juntos, como é o São Paulo, e muitos falam que estamos brigando, mas não é assim. Não gosto que falem isso. Somos numa família, temos problemas, ma s solução está conosco. Jogadores e comissão técnica têm que trabalhar.

Reserva e melhor momento na seleção
Nos momentos bons no São Paulo, estávamos começando um ótimo ano, me cobravam na seleção, porque meu momento lá não era bom. Agora, inverteu. Esse é o futebol. Vamos tomar nosso caminho. E quem sou eu para dizer se é justo ou não sair do time? Deixo com Dorival e quero apoiar, independentemente de quantos minutos jogar. O São Paulo precisa de mim, do Rodrigo Caio, da torcida e de todos.

Há quem diga que a revolta de Carlos Augusto Montenegro, então vice-presidente de futebol, após a eliminação para o River Plate na Copa Sul-Americana, tenha abalado o Botafogo em 2007. Porém, muita coisa além daquela bronca homérica aconteceu naquele ano que impediu o time de ser campeão, além de ter encantado o país com o futebol apresentado naquela temporada. A quinto e última reportagem da série especial sobre o “Carrossel Alvinegro” lembra as polêmicas e o declínio daquela equipe.

Um fator primário que resultou em problemas em jogos do início ao fim do ano foi o alto número de gols sofridos. Se o ataque era avassalador (1,95 gol/jogo), a defesa deixou muito a desejar: a média foi de 1,45 gol sofrido por partida. Tanto que a posição de goleiro viveu drama com falhas de todos que entraram em campo, e em momentos cruciais como a final estadual e a semifinal da Copa do Brasil. Outro exemplo é Juninho, zagueiro que ficou conhecido muito mais pelas cobranças de falta do que pelo poder de marcação.

O elenco reduzido também dificultou os trabalhos de Cuca. Porém, foi um tempo de vacas mais magras do que atualmente, e do qual Bebeto de Freitas, presidente do clube à época, tem uma visão macro. O ex-mandatário entende que os bons momentos superam os problemas daquela época.

– Faltou um pouco de tudo porque era o momento que o clube vivia. Faltou sustentação financeira, um monte de coisas. De todas as formas, estávamos tocando o barco para frente. Não quero entrar no mérito porque acho diferente. Olho o que aquele grupo trouxe, e o botafoguense voltou a sofrer com o clube. Isso está na nossa alma, é importante. O botafoguense estava indiferente. Aquele grupo nos trouxe de novo o sofrimento, e quem é botafoguense sabe do que eu estou falando – afirma Bebeto.

Mas houve também o imponderável. Dodô teve um ano fantástico, foi o artilheiro da equipe com 34 gols, mas foi pego no exame antidoping do dia 14 de junho (vitória por 4 a 0 sobre o Vasco, pelo Campeonato Brasileiro). Até hoje ele nega, diz não saber como fez uso da substância proibida fenproporex. O clube, na época, também não se entendeu culpado.

O jogador foi suspenso pelo Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD), depois absolvido e, após recurso da Fifa, já em 2008, defendendo o Fluminense, acabou suspenso definitivamente. Porém, o ambiente alvinegro naquele segundo semestre de 2007, acabou comprometido. Pelo menos assim entende Manoel Renha, dirigente naqueles tempos e nos tempos atuais.

– O episódio do Dodô foi um negócio… ficou um clima muito ruim depois daquela suspensão que até hoje ninguém entende. Foi um negócio muito estranho. Eu ficava com a nutricionista da época medindo cafeína… a partir dali desandou. Era um grande time. Dava muito gosto de ver – recorda Renha.

Cuca era o treinador do Botafogo na época e concorda com os problemas já elencados. Até porque houve contratações feitas no meio da temporada que não deram certo, como Athirson. E além de Dodô, referência daquele ataque, um líder do meio-campo também pegou gancho no segundo turno do Campeonato Brasileiro.

– O Dodô, sim. Estávamos líderes absolutos e o elenco era curto. Se tivéssemos um grande elenco seríamos campeões. Perdemos o Dodô e não se esqueça que perdemos o Túlio também, num jogo contra o São Paulo, no Maracanã – lembra Cuca.

Liverpool are ‘leading the charge’ to sign Pape Abou Cisse from Olympiacos, according to The Daily Mail. 

The lowdown

The defender, who is 1.98 metres tall, has been at Olympiacos since the summer of 2017 but spent the latter half of last season on loan at Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Etienne (via Transfermarkt).

According to WhoScored, his main strengths lie in winning aerial duels and intercepting the ball, but his passing is a weakness.

The 26-year-old has three years left on his contract in Piraeus and is valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt. He is currently on international duty with Senegal, linking up with Liverpool forward Sadio Mane.

The latest

Liverpool were among the clubss who sent scouts to watch Cisse in action against Fenerbahce in the Europa League last month, as per The Daily Mail.

Arsenal and Everton also had officials in attendance, and while ‘several inquiries’ have been lodged, Liverpool are understood to be ‘showing the most intent so far’.

Cisse features on the Reds’ shortlist as they look to further strengthen at centre-back following the £36m summer addition of Ibrahima Konate.

The verdict

This would be a questionable decision from Liverpool, as Cisse would probably slot into fifth in the centre-back pecking order behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Konate, especially if his ball distribution is suspect.

That’s also the position Nathaniel Phillips currently occupies, and he has found game-time so hard to come by that he was given a runout with the under-21s in the EFL Trophy last week.

Liverpool don’t need any more centre-backs and should look to use all of their available funds elsewhere.

Liverpool have been handed a big injury blow ahead of their top-of-the-table Premier League clash against Manchester City.

What’s the latest?

On Thursday, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that Trent Alexander-Arnold will not be available to play in the match at Anfield against Pep Guardiola’s side after missing their midweek 5-1 victory over FC Porto in the Champions League due to a muscle issue.

Even though Liverpool managed to cruise past their Portuguese opponents in midweek thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane without the right-back’s presence, everyone at Anfield would undoubtedly have preferred to have him available for the visit of the champions this weekend.

Klopp will not be happy

The 22-year-old, who is currently valued at £67.5m according to Transfermarkt, has made 185 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions in which he has managed to score 10 goals and provide an impressive 47 assists in the process.

Given how Alexander-Arnold has already chipped in with three assists in just six appearances across all competitions so far this term, this shows just how much of an attacking threat he has been even as a defender.

Also, with SofaScore currently listing him as the joint-third highest rated player in the Premier League so far this season alongside Chelsea defender Thiago Silva, this proves just how impressive his overall performances have been and why he will be such a big loss for Liverpool this weekend as someone who could have helped unlocked City’s strong defence, which has only conceded one league goal so far.

Looking ahead to the match against Guardiola’s men, with Klopp saying in his recent press conference that he has a number of options to compensate for the loss of Alexander-Arnold by playing the likes of Neco Williams, James Milner or Joe Gomez there or changing the system altogether, this says to us that the German has a big decision on his hands to try and manage the situation as best he can.

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has revealed that Aston Villa star Bertrand Traore has suffered an injury while on international duty.

What’s the story?

The winger has played four times in the Premier League for Dean Smith’s side, but that has totalled just 53 minutes worth of first-team action.

And now, it appears that he’s set for another spell on the sidelines following an injury he picked up during his time with Burkina Faso in the last week.

Writing on Twitter, Preece said: “I’m told Bertrand Traore has a thigh injury & has missed Burkina Faso’s two encounters with Djibouti. Another blow for the #avfc winger who was out for a couple of weeks with a hamstring strain earlier this season.”

Dean Smith will be gutted

Since joining Villa last season, the former Lyon star has struggled to get consistent game-time but has shown flashes of the “immense talent” that Smith has hailed – his debut campaign in English football saw him manage a respectable total of seven goals and seven assists in the Premier League, albeit with a frustrating lack of consistency.

His performance in the Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out defeat against Chelsea earlier this campaign showed signs that he could be ready to make his impact in his second full season at the club.

Writing in his post-match player ratings for Birmingham Mail, Preece gave him a seven, saying: “Started on the right of a three behind Archer and the Burkinabe was dangerous. Traore had a hand in Archer’s two first-half chances, the second one a nice weighted ball into the teenage striker after running from the halfway line.

“Traore was nice on the eye and soldiered on after taking a knock to the neck in the first half. Linked up nicely with Sanson in the middle prior to the Frenchman’s withdrawal. Traore also had a couple of tame, low efforts saved by Kepa.”

But now, just when he would have thought of really pushing on and trying to nail down a first-team place, he’s been hit with injury, and could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

What will make his task even more difficult is how soon fellow teammate and winger Leon Bailey makes his return from injury, and that would just push him further down the pecking order.

Smith will no doubt be gutted at losing Traore.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has delivered an update on Ollie Watkins’ future…

It was an important result for Southampton on Saturday where they managed to secure their first league win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United.

A second-half goal from Armando Broja was enough to secure the three points for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, putting them in 15th place in the league table with seven points prior to Sunday’s fixtures.

Despite the victory, there was one player that was involved against Leeds that failed to impress.

The player in question was Saints winger Mohamed Elyounoussi, who started the game against Marcelo Bielsa’s side before being taken off and replaced by Nathan Tella late on in the match.

During his time on the pitch, Elyounoussi failed to even have one shot on target while he was also unable to provide one accurate cross or long ball.

His dismal afternoon was capped off by a miss at the back post where he was unable to get his head to what would have been a simple tap in. What made matters worse was the fact he lost possession on 19 occasions and won just ten out of the 21 duels he was involved in. That ultimately earned him a rather disappointing overall match rating of 6.3/10, making him the lowest-rated Southampton player on the day that started the match, according to SofaScore.

Given how Elyounoussi, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £60k-per-week according to Spotrac, was taken out of the starting XI in Southampton’s 3-1 defeat against Chelsea, we feel as though the winger failed to repay the faith that Hasenhuttl showed in him to put him back in the starting XI against Leeds.

Southampton signed Elyounoussi back in the 2018 summer transfer window from FC Basel before sending him out on loan to Scottish club Celtic in the next summer window.

Overall, the 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £10.8m according to Transfermarkt, has made just 26 appearances for Hasenhuttl’s side, scoring four goals and providing two assists along the way.

During his time at Celtic, Elyounoussi was once described as being a “passenger” by Hoops podcaster Paul John Dykes, which is how we feel he was like in the game against Leeds.

Moving forward, if Hasenhuttl decides to stick with Elyounoussi in the starting XI for their upcoming Premier League clash against Burnley next weekend, the winger will have to put in a solid display to show that he is worthy of being a regular starter for the club, or else he could find himself back on the bench, potentially for an extended period of time.

Ange Postecoglou’s first summer at Celtic was always going to be one which centred on a rebuild.

The Hoops oversaw a mass exodus from Parkhead as the likes of Odsonne Edouard, Ryan Christie and Kristoffer Ajer all departed.

Edouard’s move has gone swimmingly well so far, with the striker already scoring two goals in two outings for his new club Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, Ajer’s Brentford also beaten Arsenal in what has been an impressive start to life in England’s top-flight for the Bees.

However, they aren’t the only former Bhoys to be shining south of the border. Another happens to be Olivier Ntcham, someone whose Celtic career ended in rather unsavoury circumstances.

The Frenchman has always been a vibrant talent, someone who can change the course of a game with his ability to break through the lines with immense strength.

However, as Celtic’s 2020/21 began to crumble, so did his performances. Neil Lennon started leaving him out of the team and the midfielder was accused of downing tools by talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil.

Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan also described him as a “disgrace” for his performances as he started just seven times for Celtic in the Premiership last season.

That word certainly applied for a disastrous loan spell with Marseille in Ligue 1, too.

Ntcham had headed back to his homeland in a bid to get his career back on track but it did not go well. Andre Villas-Boas didn’t agree with the transfer, and within hours of the player moving back to France, the manager resigned.

Against Lille in March, the midfielder was withdrawn at half-time after earning a dismal 3/10 match rating from ruthless French outlet L’Equipe.

It got worse for the 25-year-old, who was dubbed “unacceptable” and handed a rating of 1 by La Provence after he was taken off at half-time again. That was while Marseille crashed out of the Coupe de France at the hands of Canet Roussellion, a fourth-tier side.

Ntcham returned to Celtic but wasn’t deemed good enough. The Hoops’ loss is undeniably Swansea’s gain, however, because he’s now showing signs of the player we all know he can be.

During their 3-3 draw with Luton on Saturday, the bullish midfielder was nothing short of exceptional. He initially started the game on the bench but was introduced at half-time before having a devastating impact. He scored one goal and supplied another as he performed a remarkable rescue act with Swansea 3-0 down at half time.

During his 45-minute cameo, Ntcham completed 100% of his passes and also won 75% of his defensive duels.

This was a near-perfect display from a player who Celtic could actually do with now. With Callum McGregor missing against Real Betis last Thursday, another combative midfield brute would have been an ideal replacement.

Instead, they had to make do with Ismaila Soro, someone who was fortunate not to be given his marching orders in the first half.

A noite não poderia ter dado mais errado para o Botafogo. Derrota dentro de casa para o então lanterna, com direito a dois gols de Joel – que estava no clube duas semanas atrás – e lesão no começo de jogo por parte de Montillo. No placar, o 2 a 0 para o Avaí, no Nilton Santos, refletiu o que foi o começo de jogo.

Quanto mais busca propor o jogo e ser mais ofensivo – sem a sua trinca de volantes habitual – menos o Botafogo parece se entender dentro de campo. E a ocasião ainda era especial, com o retorno da dupla Camilo/Montillo, que era a grande esperança do time no começo da temporada.

E foi decepcionante. Quase sem pegar na bola, o Avaí começou em cima e logo achou seu gol com Joel, em rebatida em Igor Rabello, aos seis minutos. Para piorar, Montillo sentiu a panturrilha e, mais uma vez, acabou saindo por lesão.

E o camaronês ex-alvinegro estava pegando fogo. Dez minutos depois, recebeu de Pedro Castro e marcou o segundo tento catarinense. O curioso foi que, em 16 minutos em campo, Joel fez mais gols pelo Avaí do que na temporada inteira com a camisa do Botafogo.

Até o final da primeira etapa, a esperada pressão de quem era mandante e estava atrás no placar. Douglas fez boas defesas, enquanto o Alvinegro desperdiçou alguns bons lances, seja com Camilo – que chegou a ser vaiado por parte da torcida no Nilton Santos – ou com Marcelo e Rabello, em confusões na área avaiana. O prejuízo já estava consumado, com o 2 a 0 contra no placar.

No segundo tempo, o roteiro era mais do que esperado: tanto por parte das diversas chances desperdiçadas pelo Botafogo – que abusou nos cruzamentos – quanto no perigoso contra-ataque visitante, que ainda acertou o travessão de Gatito em chute de Júnior Dutra. Com a pouca efetividade dos atacantes, aliada a falta de repertório na criação, o Botafogo não conseguiu nem marcar um gol no time que, antes do jogo, era o lanterna da competição.

O choque de realidade veio. O Botafogo de Jair Ventura precisa estar sempre no seu limite se deseja sonhar alto dentro da temporada.

Agora, vem a sequência pesada – e decisiva – fora de casa, contra Atlético-MG, Corinthians e Nacional-URU. São três competições distintas. Será a chance de recuperação depois de uma noite decepcionante diante da torcida alvinegra.

David Norris has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern he thinks Leeds’ chances of signing Lewis O’Brien are slim.

Marcelo Bielsa has been quiet up to now in the transfer window, making just two significant additions in Jack Harrison, following three loan spells, and left-back Junior Firpo from Barcelona.

Exciting youngster Lewis Bate also joined from Chelsea, and the Leeds boss has been trying his luck with another young player in O’Brien, who’s been chased by several Premier League clubs after his impressive form for Huddersfield in the Championship.

Despite the speculation surrounding his future, O’Brien started Huddersfield’s win over Sheffield United on Saturday, and scored three times and assisted as many more in 42 Championship appearances last season.

But whilst the Telegraph believe that Leeds are closing in on a £7m deal for the 22-year-old, Norris believes that the deal has gone on too long for the two Yorkshire rivals to reach an agreement.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“I think once it goes too far, there’s obviously an issue, so I can’t see that one happening now. I can’t see them paying £8m-£10m.

“Some teams attract players for a long period of time and eventually get a deal done, but this one seems like it’s not going to happen, it’s gone on too long.”
