James Pearce hails Liverpool hero Thiago

Journalist James Pearce has waxed lyrical over Thiago’s superb performance in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Manchester City on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Thiago immense in Liverpool win

The Reds beat their title rivals at Wembley in a pulsating clash, with Jurgen Klopp’s men holding on late in the day to reach their first FA Cup final under the German.

On a day full of outstanding individual performances, Thiago was undoubtedly one of the star men, producing a sensational display in the middle of the park.

The Spaniard enjoyed a 90% pass completion rate, according to Sofascore, and also played six out of seven accurate long balls and won eight out of nine ground duels.

The Latest: Pearce lauds Spaniard

Someone who was clearly impressed with what he saw was The Athletic’s Pearce, who took to Twitter to laud the midfielder:

“Thiago was so good yesterday. You could see what it meant to him after the heartbreak of missing out on Wembley in the Carabao Cup final. Such a special player.”

The Verdict: Truly special player

Thiago’s performance was a joy to watch all afternoon, with the 31-year-old showing exactly why he is arguably one of the best midfielders of his generation.

The level of control he brought was huge in Liverpool outplaying City and he produced some moments of magic, not least one outrageous pass to Mohamed Salah.

Thiago staying fit is vital to the Reds’ hopes of winning the quadruple this season, with the three-man midfield of himself, Fabinho and Naby Keita beginning to purr together.

Spurs: Journalist makes Gvardiol claim

Tottenham Hotspur correspondent for The Athletic Jack Pitt-Brooke has revealed that the club are eyeing a move for RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol.

The lowdown: Case for the defence

As Spurs boss Antonio Conte prepares for a first summer transfer window at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it would appear that the Italian is desperate to strengthen the defensive ranks in north London.

With a Premier League top-four finish and subsequent UEFA Champions League qualification still a possibility, the calibre of players Tottenham will be able to attract could enhance.

One player who fits into the highest billing has already now been linked…

The latest: Spurs eye hot prospect

Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic, Lilywhites correspondent Pitt-Brooke has claimed that Conte has already lined up a move for talented Croatian international Gvardiol.

The report claims that a list of four left-side central defenders is ‘headed up’ by the 20-year-old, with Lille’s Sven Botman, Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni and SC Freiburg youngster Nico Schlotterbeck also named.

Taking to Twitter when citing the article, Pitt-Brooke described the position as a ‘top summer priority’ for Spurs.

The verdict: ‘Real star’

Described in the report as being one of the ‘most in-demand young defenders’ in Europe, Gvardiol has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence for both club and country.

Already capped on ten occasions by Croatia at the senior level, the starlet – who is capable of playing as a left-back and centrally – has scored twice and provided three assists in 38 appearances for Leipzig this season.

Previously mooted as possessing a £50million price tag (Daily Mail), Bundesliga aficionado Alex Chaffer hailed Gvardiol as a ‘real star’ when touting the youngster’s development in senior football so far.

Giles Clarke's charges motivated, says Lalit Modi

Lalit Modi, in his reply to the second show-cause notice served on him by the BCCI – which was prompted by a letter from Giles Clarke, the ECB president – has said Clarke’s allegations were “motivated”, given their “history of run-ins”, and “not worthy of credence”. His reply – a copy of which is with Cricinfo – also said that the board, knowing this background, should have backed him and sought his comment before issuing the notice. The notice was issued to Modi on May 6, ten days after he was suspended from his position as IPL chairman. It followed an email sent by Clarke to BCCI president Shashank Manohar alleging activities by Modi that were “detrimental to Indian cricket, English cricket and world cricket at large.” Both communications referred to a meeting Modi held on March 31 in Delhi with representatives of three English counties in which he is alleged to have discussed a parallel IPL in England and Wales. In his reply, which runs to 24 pages and has five supporting documents, Modi has cited specific examples of his differences with Clarke which, he claims, began during the inaugural season of the IPL. “It is well known in informed cricketing circles that Mr. Clarke holds a personal grudge against me. This started as far back as 2008. Mr. Clarke came to India at the time of the IPL Season 1 and noticed that the IPL was a resounding success.”He has mentioned the ECB’s brief relationship under Clarke with Allen Stanford, the Texan billionaire, which ended in early 2009 when the latter was charged with fraud. The contrast between that scenario and the IPL, which was “going from strength to strength”, is offered as a reason for the animus.Other examples cited include the ECB’s decision to not accept the stakeholding offered to it for the Champions League; the IPL’s decision to stage the second season in South Africa instead of England; the general scheduling of the IPL, whose later games clashed with the English domestic season and the scheduling of the 2010 Champions League; the IPL’s insistence that its franchises be given the preference by players taking part in the Champions League; and the status of English players with the unofficial ICL.Part of his reply dealt with the way the issue has been handled by the BCCI and he has some strong words for N Srinivasan, the board secretary, who sent him the notice. “The manner in which, on completely flimsy and frivolous grounds, a Show Cause Notice has been issued shows the prejudged, premeditated and biased mind set with which the Hon Secretary is working. The fact that Hon. Secretary had chosen to act on the basis of an email which was merely a perception of the sender with no confirmation or acknowledgement at any stage by me itself shows that the 2nd Show Cause Notice has been issued on flimsy and/or non-existent grounds.”He also repeated his request to Manohar and Srinivasan for them to step down from the probe against him and instead appoint an independent panel to adjudicate the matter.

Tottenham transfer news on Bergwijn

A Tottenham Hotspur insider expects a big U-turn with Steven Bergwijn as he thinks that he will now remain at Spurs.

The Lowdown: Looked likely…

It was looking likely that Bergwijn was going to leave Spurs earlier in the window, and there are more recent reports claiming that he could still leave for Ajax even after his heroics against Leicester.

As per The Athletic journalist and reliable transfer expert David Ornstein, the North London club are also now working on a deal to try and sign Juventus winger Dejan Kulusevski, which could push Bergwijn further down the pecking order.

Nonetheless, a Lilywhites insider now thinks that he will stay, despite the speculation.

The Latest: Insider on Bergwijn

Speaking to Football Insider, THFC insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels, has claimed that he now expects Bergwijn to stay, after initially thinking that he would go:

“These offers from Ajax have been heavily reported and I expected him to go.

“He’s another one, like Matt Doherty, who has finally realised they are already at a big club in Tottenham.

“It’s not just the goals at Leicester, I thought he was very good against Chelsea.

“His running caused two of the Chelsea players to get bookings for bringing him down.

“He looked so sharp, I’m chuffed with him. He’s turned a corner and is now a genuine option for us.

“He actually started as a striker against Chelsea which is really interesting.

“Could he still go? I don’t think there’s any chance of him leaving now.

If there are any late-window bids I expect they will be turned down.”

The Verdict: Keep

Even if Kulusevski or another winger is brought in before the deadline, Tottenham should still be looking to keep Bergwijn.

He recently showed his credentials with two very late goals in the 3-2 win away at the King Power Stadium, and with more opportunities, can still be an asset under Antonio Conte.

He averages 1.3 shots per game in the Premier League, the joint-fourth most out of any Spurs player, which shows that he is not afraid to have a pop and is one of the few goal threats in the squad not named Harry Kane or Son Heung-min.

Nonetheless, at 24 years of age, the Netherlands international still has room for improvement, and it is simply too early in his Lilywhites career to bin him off now.

Newcastle United "close" to signing Everton’s Digne

There’s been a major twist in Newcastle United’s pursuit of Everton defender Lucas Digne, and it’s good news for Magpies fans…

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days had suggested that while Eddie Howe’s side are interested in signing the left-back, there appeared to be no chance of him moving to St James’ Park, with Digne instead preferring a move elsewhere.

But now, according to journalist Carlos Reynoso on Twitter, the Magpies have stolen a march on Premier League rivals Chelsea in the race to sign the Frenchman.

He said: “Newcastle not only took away the possibility of signing Trippier to Chelsea, they are now very close to taking Digne out of Everton.”

Fans will be excited

Talk about a big change in the script.

After Fabrizio Romano’s suggestion that Newcastle was never being considered as a realistic destination by Digne, this latest update has certainly flipped things upside down, and in the Magpies’ favour.

Speaking about the Frenchman last term, Jamie Redknapp said: “You need good quality, you need good crosses, they need to have assists and he (Digne) is an exceptional player.

“He puts it into great areas all the time, a little bit like Robertson. He looks like the sort of lad you want in your team because he gets stuck in as well. He can play in a back three as well.”

It would be a serious statement of ambition from the new owners if they could manage to convince a player to turn down a side competing for titles like Chelsea, for a team currently in the midst of a relegation battle.

Money certainly talks, and if PIF have turned Digne’s head because of being willing to back Howe and throw that extra bit of cash towards new players, then they have to be applauded for their ambition.

The £27m-rated star could complete the perfect double-act at full-back alongside Kieran Trippier, an exciting prospect for the St James’ faithful.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have been handed an update on Callum Wilson…

West Ham eye Lingard move

As per reliable transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, West Ham may now have some competition in a race to sign Manchester United star Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: Lingard on the radar…

Reports over the last month have suggested that the 29-year-old could be on his way out of Old Trafford in January after a lack of chances under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

ESPN reported that talks over a new deal for Lingard stalled last month with the playmaker now weighing his winter window options and West Ham have been tipped as real frontrunners.

The England international himself even dropped a cryptic Instagram hint as to where he may end up, uploading a picture of himself on loan at the London Stadium last campaign in a teasing message.

Romano, however, sharing the latest on his future, claims the race to sign Lingard may just have turned up a notch as another competitors sets their sights.

The Latest: Romano makes Lingard claim…

Writing for The Guardian, Romano believes that Newcastle United and Eddie Howe are also ‘looking to sign’ Lingard, either temporarily or in a permanent move.

He backs that West Ham are also in the hunt to sign the Champions League man in January after an impressive stint over the second half of 2020/2021.

The Verdict: Pull out all the stops…

As manager David Moyes scours for more attacking options, with Lingard believed to be one of his targets (The Evening Standard), the Scotsman and recruitment chief Rob Newman simply must do everything possible to win the race.

Showcasing how perfect he is for West Ham already with nine goals and four assists in just 16 Premier League appearances for the Irons last season, Lingard’s numbers are matched only by his plaudits.

The Hammers’ own Declan Rice, for example, hailed the Three Lions ace as a ‘real gem’ and the player West Ham ‘needed’ during his spell at the club (Redknapp’s Big Night Out via The Evening Standard).

Meanwhile, former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell told Football Insider that Lingard is an ‘incredible player’ even amid his lack of game time in Manchester (Football Insider).

As West Ham fight on all fronts over what is, arguably, their most challenging top level campaign for years, the Red Devils outcast could find a new lease of life with a stunning return to the English capital next month.

Franchises fine-tune plans before auction

The IPL’s third auction has been preceded by hectic activity with league officials fixing base prices for the 66 overseas players involved and franchises pruning their squads by buying out player contracts

Nagraj Gollapudi18-Jan-2010The IPL’s third auction has been preceded by hectic activity on Monday with league officials fixing base prices for the 66 overseas players involved and franchises buying out player contracts to free up squad places. There were several surprises during the day, among them the news that Kolkata Knight Riders had bought out Ricky Ponting’s contract and that Mohammad Kaif, the former India batsman, had been included in the auction list – the only Indian – after being released by Rajasthan Royals. The star attractions are a mix of old hands and exciting new faces, with players from Pakistan – the current world Twenty20 champions – likely to be among the most sought after, providing they get their paperwork sorted out. The two biggest names are the hard-hitting allrounders Kieron Pollard, from West Indies, and Shahid Afridi, both of whom are currently representing South Australia in the Twenty20 Big Bash. Afridi, Pakistan’s captain in the format, is one of three players priced at $250,000 – the others who fall in the same bracket are Australia’s Brad Haddin and England’s Graeme Swann ().The biggest surprise as far as base prices go is the 40-year-old former England batsman Mark Ramprakash, who is priced at $200,000.The auction itself – at noon on Tuesday – is likely to be a more low-key affair than the past two events; there are a dozen spots in all, a spending cap of US$750,000 and few established stars to spend it on, with most already with the IPL.”Each team is very clear in what they want. I don’t think there is going to be any fierce bidding,” Amrit Mathur, Delhi Daredevils’ chief operations officer, said. Mathur reckoned though there are some players who would be more in demand than others, it would ultimately boil down to what gaps each team has.The auctions of the past two years have taught the teams some lessons. According to Mathur the most important one came from last year: “You will not spend money on buying a player who is going to sit on the bench.”While the list of players up for auction is more or less finalised, the number of free slots could change before the first bid goes under the hammer. Teams have till noon on Wednesday to buy out any more player contracts they wish and as such their squad lists can be fluid till just before the auction starts.Sundar Raman, the IPL’s chief operating officer, said it was difficult to confirm the exact number of slots that would be filled up at the auction but expected the number to be around 12. What could be confirmed through conversations with some franchises was that Delhi, Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata have a slot each open. Deccan Chargers have two vacant seats to fill.In Chennai Super Kings’ case, technically they have one slot to fill after Stephen Fleming moved on to become a full-time coach from being player-cum-coach last year. Andrew Flintoff’s injury, which has ruled him out of IPL III, opened up another, but Chennai can either buy a player at the auction or use the US$1.5m purse they bought Flintoff for last year to buy a replacement player outside the auction. “They can use that slot at the auction within the available purse or take a replacement outside of the auction as replacement,” Raman said.Mumbai Indians, too, are in a similar position having bought out Mohammad Ashraful’s contract, but the injury to Kyle Mills has created another vacancy which they will fill either via the auction or by picking a player outside it.List of players with base price

250,000$ Shahid Afridi, Brad Haddin, Graeme Swann

200,000$ Kieron Pollard, Eoin Morgan, Wayne Parnell, Doug Bollinger, Sohail Tanvir, Mark Ramprakash

100,000$ Shane Bond, Mohammad Kaif, Kemar Roach, Umar Akmal, Shakib Al Hasan, Tim Bresnan, Daren Ganga, Justin Kemp, Nuwan Kulasekara, Wavell Hinds, Kamran Akmal, Phillip Hughes, Damien Martyn, Imran Nazir, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chamara Silva, Lendl Simmons, Upul Tharanga, Jonathan Trott, Sulieman Benn, Grant Elliott, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Aamer, Saeed Ajmal, Umar Gul, Misbah-ul-Haq

50,000$ Tyron Henderson, Rory Kleinveldt, Jason Krejza, Nathan McCullum, Thissara Perera, Johan van der Wath, Rizwan Cheema, Zander de Bruyn, Chinthaka Jayasinghe, Graham Manou, Anthony McGrath, Vernon Philander, Morne van Wyk, Adam Voges, Nuwan Zoysa, Yusuf Abdulla, Clint McKay, Monty Panesar, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Chanaka Welegedara, Darren Bravo, Murray Goodwin, Thilina Kandamby, Robert Key, Luke Pomersbach, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Lou Vincent

20,000$ Ashley Noffke, Ryan ten Doeschate, Ben Laughlin, Kaushalya Weeraratne

Officials from the remaining two teams – Rajasthan and Bangalore Royal Challengers – refused to reveal any details but it is understood that Rajasthan might have at least three vacancies and Bangalore one. Last year, Rajasthan had placed the contracts of Kamran Akmal and Sohail Tanvir under suspension after the Pakistan players were asked by their government to not participate in the tournament. It was the same situation with Misbah-ul-Haq, who was contracted with Bangalore. It is unclear whether those two teams have signed contracts with the three replacement players or opened up those slots. In the case of Kaif, Raman said since he is a “capped” player he could be part of the auction.Teams would also be wary of the player availability during IPL III, which starts on March 12 and ends on April 25. During this period Australia would be engaged the trans-Tasman battle in New Zealand between March 3-31 while England are touring Bangladesh for a two-Test series between March 12-24.Meanwhile, Darren Lehmann, Deccan’s head coach, has denied reports that his team are looking at Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin as deputy to Adam Gilchrist. “We won’t be going for Brad Haddin,” Lehmann said. “He is very good cricketer, but we got a great leader and great wicketkeeper in Adam Gilchrist. We’ve got a couple of young kids in the squad who are good keepers too.”Last year, players like Bangladesh’s Mashrafe Mortaza and South African Tyron Henderson, were the most surprising buys in 2009 having been bought at record prices. Mortaza was snapped for a whopping US$600,000 by Kolkata, who pipped Punjab after some fierce bidding. The amount was 12 times Mortaza’s base price. Henderson, who had just played one game for South Africa going into the auction, was bought by Rajasthan for US$650,0000 because he was then the world’s highest wicket-taker in Twenty20s. In the end, Mortaza played a solitary match while Henderson featured in two of Rajasthan’s contests.”Teams would pay decent money for the player provided you are sure you are going to use him,” Mathur said. Interestingly, Henderson’s contract has been bought back by Rajasthan and he is back on the bidding block with a base price of $50,000.Comparatively, the case of Ramprakash is not so absurd. An established batsman in the classical mould, Ramprakash became only the 25th batsman to score hundred first-class centuries two years ago and also boasts a healthy Twenty20 average of 31. He is also the fifth-highest English player on the all-time list of Twenty20 run-scorers.Ponting agreed a buyout fee with Kolkata, ending his association with the team after only four matches over two seasons. “Ricky was only going to be available for a maximum of five of the Knight Riders 14 games due to the Australian tour of New Zealand coinciding with more than half of the IPL season,” James Henderson, Ponting’s agent, said. “The Knight Riders obviously want their international players to be available for all games and we agreed financial terms to buy out Ricky’s contract.”

De Ligt would kickstart Conte era at Spurs

Fabio Paratici could truly kickstart the Antonio Conte era at Tottenham Hotspur with an audacious swoop for Mattijs de Ligt this winter…

What’s the word?

Spurs have been linked with a move for the Juventus centre-back in recent weeks, with Football Insider suggesting that the 22-year-old is on the radar of the Italian supremo ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

It’s thought that the Lilywhites sporting director believes a deal could be viable for de Ligt in January and that manager Antonio Conte is keen to bolster his three-man defence with at least one ‘top-class’ central defender.

According to ex-Leeds striker Noel Whelan to the same outlet, the 31-cap Dutch star would be a “massive signing” for Spurs following Cristian Romero’s injury blow and doubts over Eric Dier’s suitability in defence.

It remains to be seen how much Juventus would command for their young centre-back, though Transfermarkt value him at £63m.

Conte’s statement signing

De Ligt really would be a major coup for Spurs and one that would really signal the club’s intentions under a trophy-laden manager like Conte. He has no fewer than nine honours, including last season’s Serie A title, as well as a Premier League and FA Cup.

He’s a born-winner but must be backed in the transfer market, as seen by the vast majority of his recent managerial roles – for instance, he spent over £300m on 12 players, to varying degrees of success. N’Golo Kante and Antonio Rudiger have been two huge success stories and both remain at the club to this day.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-updates-transfers-antonio-conte-thfc” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Spurs currently have one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League. No team ranked 16th or better has a worse goal difference and that’s hardly a surprise as there have not been too many reinforcements to a backline that was ever so error-prone last season.

With Conte wanting to deploy a back-three, it would make sense for him to target additions in the position and they really should look no further than de Ligt – just as Whelan claims, it would be massive for the club and squad.

He is currently Massimiliano Allegri’s fourth-best performer in the Italian top-flight, managing an average WhoScored rating of 6.85, which is better than seasoned veterans Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

The youngster’s agent, Mino Raiola, believes he’s like an “oil tanker” in defence as “he can’t be stopped”, whilst European football expert Carlo Garganese once described him as an “absolute monster.”

Standing at 6 foot 2, with very strong ball-playing and physical qualities, de Ligt could be a game-changing and statement signing for the north Londoners.

His arrival would send shockwaves to the rest of the league that Spurs are ‘back.’

AND in other news, Conte can save ENIC millions with “talented” teen Spurs prodigy who’s shades of Varane…
