All-round Udarata ease to big win

A round-up of the Super 4s Twenty20 Tournament matches played on June 28

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jun-2014A 30-ball 50 from Shehan Jayasuriya, followed by an incisive performance from Udarata Rulers’ bowlers, helped the team to a 55-run victory against Western Troopers for their second straight win of the tournament.Udarata, put in to bat, scored at more than seven an over right from the start as the openers Dhananjaya de Silva and Upul Tharanga raced to 55 in 7.2 overs.Troopers fought their way back into the contest by dismissing both batsmen in successive overs, but a 60-run association for the third wicket between Jayasuriya and Chamara Silva once again helped Udarata wrest the advantage.Jayasuriya thumped four fours and two sixes during his half-century, and Lahiru Thirimanne’s 10-ball 21 included one four and one six, as Udarata finished with 174 for 5.Troopers never got going in their chase, and wickets hindered their momentum at regular intervals. Ajantha Mendis was the pick of the Udarata bowlers, taking 3 for 28, while Dilhara Lokuhettige, Asela Gunaratne and Milinda Siriwardana shared six scalps between them to dismiss Troopers for 119 in 18.2 overs. The Southern Express v Yaal Blazers game was washed out. After Southern Express chose to bat, they put up 139 on the back of an unbeaten 43 from Jehan Mubarak. Alankara Asanka Silva and Ramith Rambukwella were chiefly responsible for holding Southern Express back, sharing seven wickets between them while conceding just 46 in their eight. Yaal Blazers did not really get off to a solid start in the case though, falling to 21 for 2 in four overs before play had to be abandoned.

Rejigged sides gear up for World T20

The dust has hardly settled on the gripping finish to the Test series, but already both South Africa and Australia have switched to Twenty20 mode

Big PictureThe dust has hardly settled on the gripping finish to the Test series, but already both South Africa and Australia have switched to Twenty20 mode. Most of Australia’s Test cricketers are gone, with only three members of the victorious squad required for these three matches, while South Africa’s T20 outfit features much greater crossover. And while the Test series was no doubt the major event of this tour, the T20s take on extra significance given the proximity to the World T20 in Bangladesh. Neither South Africa nor Australia have ever won the World T20 and when this series finishes, the first match of the world tournament for each side will be less than ten days away.Australia have strong recent form behind them after beating England 3-0, but it is hard to tell how greatly that result was affected by England’s general malaise by the end of their Ashes tour. The Australian selectors have trusted form and experience over youth, recalling veterans Brad Hogg and Brad Hodge, although they have also tossed green legspinner James Muirhead in at the deep end. South Africa have not played a T20 since November and they have in their squad uncapped fast bowler Beuran Hendricks and the allrounder Albie Morkel, who last played for his country at the 2012 World T20 in Sri Lanka. Both teams might just have some tinkering to do in these three games.Form guide(last five completed games, most recent first)
South Africa LWWWL
Australia WWWLLIn the spotlightSouth Africa hope David Miller will be one of the emerging stars of the World T20 in Bangladesh. At 24 he has already played 19 T20s for his country but is yet to really show his best at T20 international level. A brutal striker of the ball, Miller has experience in domestic T20 leagues in four countries and the Australians cannot afford to underestimate him in this series.Brad Hogg will become the oldest man ever to play a T20 international if he features in this series. At 43, Hogg will break the record set by Steve Tikolo of Kenya, who was 42 when he last turned out for his country in November last year. Hogg was a surprise recall for the previous World T20 in Sri Lanka and has not played for Australia since then, but his canny spin for the Perth Scorchers made him a tempting choice for the selectors with another World T20 in Asian conditions. Hogg remains athletic in the field and as enthusiastic as ever, and his wrong’un remains tough to pick.Team newsDale Steyn will miss at least the first two matches due to the hamstring strain he suffered in the third Test and Kyle Abbott has been called into the squad as cover. Wayne Parnell and Beuran Hendricks have passed fitness tests and are available for selection.South Africa squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Kyle Abbott, Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock (wk), AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Beuran Hendricks, Imran Tahir, David Miller, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.Mitchell Johnson was part of the squad and will join the rest of the group for the World T20 but has been sent home to rest after the Test series. Australia’s most recent T20s, against England, were played without key men David Warner and Shane Watson, so their return will force some reworking of the batting line-up.Australia squad: George Bailey (capt), Daniel Christian, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin (wk), Moises Henriques, Brad Hodge, Brad Hogg, Glenn Maxwell, James Muirhead, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Shane Watson, Cameron White.Pitch and conditionsPort Elizabeth provided the slowest surface of the three Tests and the same may be true of the T20s. In the last T20 international held at the venue, South Africa batted first and scored 179 for 6, which New Zealand failed to chase down. There is the chance of light rain on Sunday and the top temperature is forecast to be 19C.Stats and trivia South Africa start this series ranked third and Australia sixth but such is the volatile nature of the T20 rankings that Australia could jump South Africa if they win the series 3-0 Australia’s squad includes only three players who took part in the Tests – Watson, Warner and Brad Haddin. South Africa’s T20 squad has nine. Australia’s squad boasts the highest scorer in all of Twenty20 history – Brad Hodge has made 5902 runs at 36.88 for a total of 14 teams, and he is finally getting another chance for his countryQuotes”We’ll be trying to get some game time into our World Cup squad, so we’ll chop and change a bit here and there.”

“We have won nine out of our last 12 T20 matches in the last year. I’m happy with the progress we have made.”

Hauritz takes four in rainy draw

Rain prevented either side pushing for victory on the final afternoon at the SCG, where New South Wales had to settle for first-innings points in their match against Queensland

ScorecardNathan Hauritz picked up 4 for 93•Getty ImagesRain prevented either side pushing for victory on the final afternoon at the SCG, where New South Wales had to settle for first-innings points in their match against Queensland. The Bulls were set an unlikely 313 to win and when the rain came shortly after the tea break, they were 3 for 135 – effectively four down with Matthew Gale injured and unable to bat – with Peter Forrest on 41 and James Hopes on 40.Usman Khawaja had been caught behind off the bowling of Sean Abbott for 25 after Queensland lost both openers, Nathan Reardon for 22 and Greg Moller for 1. Earlier, the Blues had declared at 9 for 221, a score set up by 67 to each of the openers, Nic Maddinson and Ryan Carters.Nathan Hauritz picked up 4 for 93 for the Bulls and sparked a mini-collapse as New South Wales lost 4 for 2 in the space of four overs. But the stand-in captain Peter Nevill steadied the Blues with 29 before the declaration came.

Sales, Coetzer tons pummel Gloucs

ScorecardDavid Sales made his 27th first-class ton•PA Photos

Kyle Coetzer and David Sales both struck centuries as Northamptonshire’s batsmen dominated the second day against Gloucestershire at Wantage Road.Scotland international Coetzer was the first to reach his milestone as he made 122 off 230 balls to help promotion-chasing Northants to eventually close on an imposing 369 for 3. Sales was to put some previous patchy form behind him as he then hammered an unbeaten 126 from only 137 deliveries, while captain Stephen Peters also contributed 87 off 153 balls.Northants began the day on 13 without loss, 345 runs behind their opponents, with Peters resuming on 12 and Coetzer on 1. Peters, who is playing in his first championship match since returning from a broken finger, was to go on to complete a half-century off 78 balls. That came as part of a mammoth opening partnership with Coetzer as Gloucestershire’s attack struggled to get much out of a placid wicket. The hosts resumed after lunch on 112 for 0, with Coetzer soon reaching 50 himself off 116 deliveries as his side picked up where they left off. In the end it came down to 18-year-old first-class debutant Tom Shrewsbury to finally break the stand on 170 when he forced Peters to edge to Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick. But any hopes the visitors had of this breakthrough bringing a change of fortunes were dashed as Sales piled on 135 alongside Coetzer for Northants’ second wicket.Coetzer was to complete his eighth century in first-class cricket and his third in all competitions this season off 202 balls with a straight four off James Fuller with the final delivery before tea. Veteran Sales, who had previously been finding runs hard to come by this season, then raced to his first half-century of the campaign off 67 balls early in the evening session.Having batted so well, Coetzer finally departed tamely in the final over before the second new ball was due when he chipped Benny Howell to Chris Dent at midwicket. But there was no stopping Sales completing an explosive century – his 27th first-class ton – off just 107 deliveries with a crunching four through midwicket off Fuller.Alex Wakely (13) then became the first batsman to miss out on a big score as he nudged Fuller behind with five overs of the day left. Australia international Cameron White then survived until the close along with Sales and will resume tomorrow on 6 not out with the hosts looking for a huge total.

Hants add Sohail Tanvir for T20

Sohail Tanvir, the Pakistan allrounder, is set to join Hampshire for all formats from May 23 until the end of the group matches of the Friends Life t20.

Umar Farooq15-May-2013Sohail Tanvir, the Pakistan allrounder, is set to join Hampshire for all formats from May 23 until the end of the group matches of the Friends Life t20.Tanvir will be Hampshire’s second overseas player and will join Australia’s George Bailey for the defence of their T20 title.Tanvir, 28, is currently out of contention for Pakistan. He was named in the 30-man preliminarily squad for the Champions Trophy but failed to find a place in the final 15. He last featured for Pakistan against India for a T20 International last year in Ahmedabad. Afterwards he was dropped for Pakistan’s tour of South Africa but was recalled for the final two ODIs but never made into the XI.”Tanvir will be playing for Hampshire until the end of the T20 competition,” Umran Khan, Tanvir’s agent told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s a full contract with an understanding to play from May 23 that includes all the formats. He has already applied for a visa.”For the last two years, Hants had tried to sign the flamboyant Shahid Afridi, who had a successful stay in 2011 – taking 17 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 11.17. He was due to return in 2012 but encountered visa delays and never made it.Tanvir, who played for South African side Highveld Lions in last year’s Champions League, was due to play for Worcestershire but that contract was cancelled after visa problems. According to his initial contract understanding with Hants, he will be playing until July 31, so will be available for the Sri Lanka Premier League from August 10.”Initially I am looking at the end of the T20 group stage,” Tanvir said. “But I can miss the two three matches of Sri Lanka League to extend my stay for Hants.”

Apesar do clima leve, o elenco do Vozão não quer diminuir o ritmo e promete atacar o rival no último jogo do ano.

Se for derrotado, o time está fora da competição.

Troubled Leicestershire take the plunge

News that Leicestershire’s captain and chairman are to throw themselves out of a plane might, at first glance, be suspected as a response to the desperate financial position in which the club finds itself after a Twenty20 campaign officially described as “gruesome.”As it happens Matthew Hoggard and Paul Haywood are not jumping out of a plane as an act of despair, but as an attempt to raise money for an impoverished club which is fighting to remain solvent in increasingly testing times. The pair, plus Greg Smith, Michael Thornley, Josh Cobb and his father, former Leicestershire player and coach Russell Cobb, will undertake a sponsored parachute jump at Langar Airfield on Monday September 17 as part of a benefit year for the club itself.Leicestershire have endured a Friends Life t20 campaign that their chief executive, Mike Siddall, described as “gruesome.” Not only did their defence of the title never really get off the ground – they won just two of their 10 qualifying games and finished bottom of the group – but spectator numbers were hugely disappointing. The club fears that it achieved only around 40% of its budget from the competition.Such figures will only increase the clamour for a change to the domestic T20 schedule. Siddall, for one, endorses the view of Richard Gould, the chief executive of Surrey, that the competition should be spread across the summer and played, where possible, at a regular time so spectators are able to predict forthcoming games.”Without a doubt, we need to be playing T20 over a longer period,” Siddall told ESPNcricinfo. “We need to have an appointment to view on Friday nights, with one or two midweek games to keep the broadcasters happy.”We all understand the reasons behind the short window, but they haven’t worked. It leaves us at the mercy of the weather and the idea that we might be able to attract the most exciting overseas players has not been borne out by experience.”Leicestershire’s problem this year was not that games were abandoned. Had they been, insurance payments would have covered the club for their losses. Instead, it was that matches took place in the sort of gloomy conditions that deterred spectators from attending.”A typical example came in our game against Derbyshire,” Siddall said. “It rained until 2.30pm and, while we eventually had an 8-over a side game starting at 7.35pm, no-one had hung around to watch it. It’s hit our catering budget, it’s hit our sponsors and it has left us with some very difficult budget decisions to make in the coming weeks. Times are very tough and they’re not getting any easier.”After a terrible 2010, when Leicestershire lost over £400,000, they returned to profitability in 2011 with a surplus of nearly £300,000. Much of that was built on some exceptional items: £135,000 in donations; £43,000 in extra hospitality income thanks to their T20 success; £60,000 thanks to a sell-out T20 game against India and an increase in £282,000 from the ECB. There is little prospect of a repeat this year.”We have little prospect of making up the T20 losses,” Siddall admitted. “We have three CB40 games and four championship games to come. All the CB40 games are at a weekend or on a Bank Holiday, which is good for general spectators but not good for corporate hospitality.”The club at least have a fine record of producing players – Stuart Broad, Luke Wright, James Taylor and Darren Maddy are among those to have developed through the club’s youth system – and spirits have been buoyed by the recent selection of Ben Collins in England’s U19 World Cup squad. Test-hosting clubs such as Hampshire, Middlesex, Surrey and Yorkshire were all without representatives in the squad.Long term the club have “embryonic plans” for a ground redevelopment that might revolutionise their business plan. In the meantime, however, Leicestershire are overly reliant on the continuing goodwill and generosity of their supporters and initiatives such as this parachute jump. It is not a comfortable position.
