ICC World XI to tour Pakistan 'in due course' – Clarke

ECB chairman Giles Clarke has said an ICC World XI will tour Pakistan “in due course” since it is still not possible for national teams to visit the country

Cricinfo staff17-Aug-2010ECB chairman Giles Clarke has called for Pakistan’s return as a host of international matches and said an ICC World XI would tour the country “in due course” since it is still not possible for national teams to visit. Pakistan has not hosted international cricket since the March 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team.”World cricket must keep giving Pakistan cricket the chance to fund itself and move forward, to do something for the spectator in Pakistan,” Clarke wrote in the September issue of magazine. The security challenges are enormous but we cannot allow the terrorists to win. They must lose by an innings – repeatedly.”So world cricket must go back and play in Pakistan. I do not think it will be possible for individual national teams to tour yet. But with determination and courage an ICC World XI in due course will go and play against Pakistan in her great cities and there will be a marvellous atmosphere.”He said the cricketing world could not afford to forsake a country with such fervent fans and a strong history in the game. “Cricket cannot abandon a nation with such a magnificent history in the game, such wonderful players and such enthusiastic and knowledgeable supporters. It will be an historic moment when international cricket resumes in Pakistan and the first ICC team walks out.”Clarke, who is also chairman of the ICC’s Pakistan Task Team, revealed that the inability to host international cricket has resulted in the PCB’s income falling from £27 million to £10 million, “a brutal impact that few enterprises could survive; terrorism does not care about its human consequences” he said. The ECB plans to host more neutral matches featuring Pakistan to help the PCB with its finances. “The ECB intends to assist in staging more Pakistan games here [England] in 2011 and 2012,” Clarke said. “The atmosphere, the passionate support and, of course, the tremendous cricket played by the Pakistan team made it a compelling experience. The PCB’s economic needs make it imperative.”Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman welcomed the announcement and expressed his gratitude for Clarke’s efforts. “It is indeed heartening to note that the cricket fraternity is working on revival of cricket in Pakistan. I am very grateful to Mr. Giles Clarke who is a dear friend of Pakistan, for pursuing our case and working tirelessly in bringing international cricket back to Pakistan,” he said.Ijaz Butt’s views were echoed by Pakistan captain Salman Butt, who said it would be a major boost for followers of cricket in his country. “It would be wonderful to have any kind of international cricket going on in Pakistan and if all the players can come and do this favour for Pakistan cricket it would be wonderful.”People of Pakistan are cricket lovers and they are their heroes not only from Pakistan but from around the world and they love watching them. hey are great admirers of people playing around th world so if that happens it would be great for Pakistan cricket,” he said.England captain Andrew Strauss said the initiative would benefit Pakistan’s young players who would needed exposure at the highest level. “The key for them is to get as much cricket as possible. They’ve been starved over the last couple of years. For some of their younger players, the more experience they get the better they’ll be. The international cricketing community has to help out teams like Pakistan who have difficulties at home,” he said.Strauss was open to the possibility of touring Pakistan with the World XI side, provided it were declared safe. England’s 2008 tour of India was jeopardised by the Mumbai terrorist attacks, forcing the squad to head back home midway through the ODI series. Strauss was part of the Test side that returned to India to play a rescheduled series. “In the wake of Mumbai bombings, I’ve always felt it was wrong not to go somewhere if security people said it was safe. They make that judgment with as much information as they can. If they said it was safe to go I’d certainly consider it.”Strauss said that while the cricketing world had a responsibility towards Pakistan due to their situation, it should not extend to the field of play. “With the natural disasters there, some of the difficulties they’ve had in terms of terrorism over the last couple of years it’s very difficult for their players to keep their minds on the job and play at their best. We can have sympathy for them in that sense, but it doesn’t come into it on the pitch. It’s like getting into a boxing ring: you can’t have sympathy for the guy you’re competing against,” he said.

Ramsey to Chelsea might just be Arsenal’s only option at this stage

As we enter the final few days of the transfer window, Arsenal’s transfer business seems to be pretty much complete.

Under the guidance of Emery, Mislintat, and Ranllehi, the club worked quickly and early to bring in five new players who have improved the squad massively.

Unlike other teams, Arsenal haven’t splashed out large sums of money on their players but rather spent wisely and relatively cheaply.

After a disappointing season last year, Emery will be hoping that these new faces will help him build a team capable of challenging for the top four, and better yet, challenge for silverware.

Despite the positivity surrounding the club at the moment, the contract situation of Aaron Ramsey remains the one dark cloud on the horizon for the Arsenal.

Recently reports have suggested that Chelsea and Liverpool are interested in the Welshman and now the Express is stating that Chelsea are ready to bid £35 million before the window closes.

The Breakdown

With only 12 months left on his contract, Arsenal are very much at risk of entering the season like last year burdened with a player whose future at the club is very much uncertain.

At this late stage of the transfer window, selling Ramsey wouldn’t give Arsenal much time to find a replacement but they just might have to do it.

Yes, the midfield man was probably the club’s best player last season but as the Gunners enter a new era, to start it off with the negativity surrounding Ramsey’s contract situation might be a bad way to begin but it might just be Arsenal’s only option now.

What’s your opinion on this transfer Arsenal fans?

Chelsea are expected to sign Fernando Llorente very soon

Chelsea’s long-term interest in Swansea striker Fernando Llorente is on the verge of coming to a successful end as they close in on a £15m deal.Antonio Conte is an admirer of the Spaniard, who he worked with him while at Juventus, and is eager to bring him in to boost his attacking options.Daily Telegraph journalist Matt Law revealed on Twitter on Wednesday morning that a deal to bring Llorente to Stamford Bridge could be done and dusted by the end of the day after overnight talks.

However, reports in MailOnline claim that Swansea will only sanction the move once they’ve secured the return of Wilfried Bony from Manchester City.

Talks to bring Bony back to the Liberty Stadium are ongoing as the Swans hope to secure a £13m deal before the Thursday’s deadline.

Do Chelsea need Llorente?

Chelsea’s move for Llorente does make sense but it certainly represents a downgrade from Diego Costa.

Costa’s exile and imminent Stamfrod Bridge exit would leave Conte short of strike options, with just Michy Batshuayi and new summer signing Alvaro Morata left on the books as natural first-team strikers.

While Llorente was instrumental in Swansea’s survival in the Premier League last season, netting 15 goals, he is no longer a spring chicken at 32-years-old and goes against the Blues’ well known policy of not signing players above the age of 30.

If they do, these deals typically last for just one year, although a £15m move for a 32-year-old expected to be around for just 12 months doesn’t particularly represent great business on paper.

But if he scores important goals and helps the Blues retain their Premier League crown, this kind of deal would undoubtedly prove to be a shrewd bit of business in the end. Only time will tell.

Zlatan reveals contract news that will leave Man United fans concerned

According to The Mirror, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is yet to sign a new deal for Manchester United and is waiting to see if they qualify for next season’s Champions League before deciding his future.

What’s the word?

Ibrahimovic has been, by some way, Manchester United’s best player this season and his goals have been vital in their surge towards the Champions League spots.

Indeed, without him you feel that they would be nowhere near the top four and certainly without the EFL Cup: so getting him to agree terms has to be of paramount importance.

They’re two points off where they need to be and will need to keep their form up if they are to replace one of those sides above them.

What was said?

As quoted by The Mirror, the Swedish striker’s words are hardly comforting if you’re a United fan:

“Let’s see what happens. I mean the moment, how I feel, the situation. We have another two months of the season to go.”

He certainly seems ready to hold out to see what happens in the coming games, then, but you do get the feeling that if he did want to stay no matter what, he would have put pen to paper by now.

Should United worry?

Absolutely. The former PSG man has been the star of the show so far for United and their season would have gone far worse had he not come in during the summer.

His goals and personality have led the club through the troubles of the earlier part of this season and if he goes in the next window he’ll take a huge amount of replacing.

The Red Devils are on the brink of getting back to the top – but only if Ibrahimovic stays put, you feel.

Five Fantasy Premier League Talking Points from Gameweek 29

It’s always exciting in the Premier League, but you know a lot of things went down when there were no less than five red cards and 27 goals in the 10 fixtures.

The biggest match of the round was undoubtedly the North London Derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, with both clubs vying for the title as they attempt to chase Leicester City. It ended in a draw, meaning the Foxes being unlikely champions is closer to becoming a reality every single week.

At the bottom, Newcastle United, despite spending £80million in transfers, are becoming likely relegation candidates after another loss, this time to Bournemouth at home.

So that’s in terms of the Premier League itself, but what about Fantasy Football? In which the results don’t matter as much as the performance of specific players?

Well we shall summarize the FIVE FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE Talking Points from the Weekend right here!

Alexis Sanchez finally scores

Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez was undoubtedly their star man last season, but after struggling with injuries the Chile international has taken some time to get back in the groove.

However, Sanchez ended his goalscoring drought against Tottenham Hotspur this past weekend, and could find the form that made him almost a requirement for teams last season.

The Gunners do however have a risk of not playing against West Bromwich this coming weekend, with the clash dependant on whether they can beat Hull City in an FA Cup replay on Wednesday. This means investment in Sanchez should wait, but he should be definitely in contention if the Tigers knock Arsenal out this week.

Aguero in good knick despite penalty miss

It’s not often that you have a good day when you miss a penalty, but thankfully Aguero’s missed spot kick did not affect the outcome of the game with Aston Villa which finished 4-0.

The Argentine scored two goals earlier and was hoping to complete a hattrick, but his shot was off target to disappoint many that captained him.

Despite this, it seems almost essential to draft Aguero in if you don’t own him, with games against Norwich (Away), Man United (Home), Bournemouth (Away), and West Brom (Home) on the horizon.

Leicester are strong all over the pitch

In the Fantasy Premier League you are only allowed a maximum of three players from the same team, and at the start of the season you wouldn’t think you would want more than three Leicester City stars.

But it’s almost essential to have the maximum, with the Foxes scoring the joint-top most goals and an improving defence that has now racked up seven clean sheets in their last 11 games, with the latest from their 1-0 away win against Watford.

It’s more than likely that Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy are already in many squads, but any of their defenders or goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel should be taken into consideration.

Payet will rival Mahrez for Player of the Year

Dimitri Payet will undoubtedly be a contender for Player of the Year after another scintillating display, with the Frenchman supplying an assist to level their game against Everton 2-2 before then grabbing the winner during injury time himself.

The former Marseille man has now scored two goals and supplied three assists in his last four matches, but his blank next weekend and tough games against Chelsea, Arsenal, and Leicester coming means investment will be rather low.

However, the Hammers main man has struck against the big boys earlier this term and is pretty much fixture-proof like Mahrez, so avoid him at your peril.

Firmino the new Suarez?

That’s pushing it a bit, but Liverpool star Roberto Firmino is fast becoming their best player and a consistent source of Fantasy Premier League points, with another (albeit lucky) goal in their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

The Brazil international has scored seven goals in their last eight games, while supplying four assists in the process. This has seen him hit double figures four times and garner a total of total 75 points during that period.

Again, this is another player with a blank this weekend. But with double gameweeks coming up, Firmino may be another must-have in the near future.

‘Mental to be honest!’ – Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold gives honest assessment after scoring late winner to edge seven-goal thriller against Fulham

It was a "mental" 90 minutes as Liverpool managed a 4-3 victory against Fulham on Sunday, match-winner Trent Alexander-Arnold said.

  • Liverpool played out wild 4-3 win
  • Reds looked set to lose to Fulham
  • Alexander-Arnold scored late winner
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Alexander-Arnold scored a late goal to secure the three points for the Reds, who looked set to lose 3-2 just two minutes before his strike. After substitute Wataru Endo pulled the home team level, the right-back, who found the net with a great free-kick that went down as a Bernd Leno own goal to open the scoring in the first half, lashed in a minute later to spark wild celebrations from his side and their fans.

    WHAT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SAID

"Mental, to be honest. Game of ups and downs," he said to when asked for his reaction to the match "Leading then getting clawed back twice then obviously losing with five minutes to go, get the equaliser and then get the winner. It's an unbelievable game full of emotion, but just very, very happy to get the win and be able to get it over the line."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The England international sparked the game into life with his free-kick shot that struck the bar and went in off of the goalkeeper's back. But Fulham managed to pull level before Alexis Mac Allister's wonder goal brought Liverpool ahead again. Just before half-time, though, Kenny Tete nudged in another equaliser and then it looked like the visitors would go on to win as Bobby De Cordova-Reid headed in after 80 minutes. Endo and Alexander-Arnold ensured their team avoided an upset on home soil, however, as Liverpool went on to make it four games unbeaten.

    WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

The Reds will hope to extend their unbeaten run when they take on Sheffield United on Wednesday. The Blades host Liverpool off the back of a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Burnley and sit bottom of the table with just five points from 14 matches.

The end for Harry Maguire at Man Utd? £80m defender's Old Trafford career was doomed from the start

The England international clearly has no future under Erik ten Hag, and a parting of ways is inevitable this summer

Manchester United are going places under Erik ten Hag. Sunday's 1-0 victory over Aston Villa gave the Red Devils a nine-point cushion over fifth-placed Liverpool in the race for the final Champions League spot, and they still have a game in hand on their rivals.

Ten Hag also brought the club's six-year trophy drought to an end with a 2-0 Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle, and supporters are now looking forward to a blockbuster FA Cup final clash against noisy neighbours Manchester City.

Amid their resurgence, Harry Maguire has been little more than a spectator.

The 30-year-old has only started 15 games for United this season, including just seven in the Premier League. Indeed, he was only given a four-minute run out against Villa after Ten Hag opted to deploy Luke Shaw as a makeshift centre-back alongside Victor Lindelof once again.

Maguire is still United's club captain, but Bruno Fernandes now wears the armband 90 percent of the time, and a permanent change will surely be made in the summer.

It has also been reported that Ten Hag will sanction Maguire's departure, with the defender not figuring into his long-term plans at Old Trafford.

When Maguire initially joined United, he was considered among the best centre-halves in the country. Four years later, he has been reduced to a figure of ridicule and appears destined for a significant step down.

So how did we get to this point?

    The price tag

Maguire was on the radar of a number of top clubs in 2019, having matured into one of the Premier League's most consistent performers at Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola wanted him at Manchester City, but it was United that ultimately won the race for his signature by smashing the world transfer record for a defender.

Leicester managed to get £80 million ($100m) out of United for Maguire, who signed a six-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of an extra year.

City didn't feel that lofty fee was a fair valuation, but the Red Devils took the gamble heading into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first full season in charge.

"Harry is one of the best centre-backs in the game today," the Norwegian said at his unveiling. "He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure."

Maguire backed up his manager's words with a solid first couple of months at the club, and outlined his aspirations in an interview with "It's the long term, that's what the main thing is," he said. "In five or six years, judge me then – whether I have been a success at this club or not."

Pressed on how he deals with the expectations that come with his price tag, he added: "It doesn't bother me at all."

United supporters hoped that Maguire would be the same kind of transformative signing that Virgil van Dijk was for Liverpool a year earlier, but he hasn't come close to reaching that standard.

And despite what he says, that £80m fee has been a weight around Maguire's neck from day one.

    Captaincy came too quick

Maguire's quick adaptation to life at Old Trafford led Solskjaer to make a drastic call just six months into his debut season.

With Ashley Young all set to seal a winter transfer to Inter, Maguire was given the honour of replacing him as United's official captain.

Granted, Solskjaer wasn't blessed with a squad full of leaders, but at the time it seemed as though David de Gea was the better choice due to his standing as the most experienced member of the dressing room.

Maguire jumped at the opportunity, despite not being ready for the extra responsibility that comes with the armband.

A captain needs to exude confidence to the rest of his team-mates and set an example for younger players to follow, but Maguire's performances in a United shirt have ranged from frustrating to downright embarrassing at times.

The Red Devils managed to finish second in the Premier League in 2020-21, but the wheels came off for Solskjaer in the first half of the following season as the flaws in Maguire's game were ruthlessly exposed.

The legendary former striker was sacked before the Christmas period, and his interim replacement Ralf Rangnick was unable to steady the ship as United finished with their worst-ever Premier League points total.

Maguire was regularly criticised for posting empty apologies on social media after bad results, and he was booed by angry supporters when turning out for England at international level.

The additions of players such as Fernandes and Raphael Varane have also shone an unflattering light on Maguire, who cannot match them for natural talent or strength of personality.

He has held onto the armband by a thread this term, but it's easy to wonder whether his time at United would have run far more smoothly had he never been entrusted with captaincy duties.

    The Mykonos incident

The public's opinion of Maguire began to change in the summer of 2020, when he took an ill-fated family holiday to Greece.

His wife, dad, brother and sister were among those to accompany the United star to Mykonos for what should have been a relaxing break, but the trip ended up becoming a nightmare.

Maguire was arrested after a brawl outside a bar, and held in police custody for two nights. He was later found guilty in court of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and attempted bribery, which earned him a 21-month suspended sentence.

He has always denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the altercation occurred after two strangers injected his sister Daisy with an unknown substance. Maguire also alleges that he was beaten after being taken to the police station.

Maguire launched an appeal, which nullified his international conviction, and his case is set to be heard in a Greek court this coming June.

Police disputed his version of events, and one officer alleged in court that Maguire said to him following his arrest: "Please, let me go, I am very rich, I can pay, I am the leader of Manchester United."

As the press jumped on all the details surrounding the case, Maguire found himself under greater scrutiny than ever before, and his performances seemed to suffer after his eventual return to action for United.

“Some people will believe me, some people won’t,” he said when looking back on that summer in an interview with in 2022. “But one thing I would say about Mykonos is that I have no regrets.

“I don’t worry about what the outcome is going to be. I don’t worry about anything to do with it because my conscience is so clear about what happened that night. The people who were there that night, there were nine of us, we all understand what went on and what happened.”

Maguire's conscience may be clear, but he no longer goes anywhere full of strangers without a security team.

“It’s not something I want, really," he added on those extra measures. "It’s probably made me a little more aware that I’m in the spotlight that much.”

    Individual errors

A study published by the Alan Turing Institute last August found that Maguire is the second most abused player online – after his former United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

When the criticism was at its peak, Maguire was left fearing for his and his family's safety. In April 2022, he received a bomb threat to his home in Cheshire.

Maguire said those responsible had "crossed a line" with the level of hate aimed in his direction coming as a shock to his colleagues at Old Trafford.

"He's taken a lot of stick – probably more than I've ever seen before in football," Shaw told a few months later.

There is no place in football for that level of abuse, and to Maguire's huge credit, he hasn't let it keep him down. However, in the world of social media, high-profile players will always be targeted if they are failing to perform. Maguire certainly doesn't deserve to be subjected to such appalling vitriol, but he has left himself open to criticism.

He made 16 errors leading to goals last season, and has been similarly unreliable when called upon in 2022-23.

Maguire is slow in and out of possession, and prone to making poor decisions that put United under pressure time and time again. He was made a scapegoat for the club's struggles last term because he stood out like a sore thumb.

United legend Nemanja Vidic recently expressed his belief that Maguire has lost the respect of his team-mates as a result of his erratic nature.

"Maguire has a problem because he doesn’t perform well," he said on Rio Ferdinand's YouTube channel . "When you don’t perform well, it’s difficult to say to someone what to do. It’s difficult to gain that type of respect. In general, any captain has to be first, has to show an example. A captain has to play well and has to fight for the club, and then everybody else will do it."

The most recent example of Maguire's ineptitude came in United's dismal 3-0 loss to Sevilla in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

Ten Hag had no choice but to start the England man due to a plethora of injuries at the back, but he will surely know by now that he cannot trust him in the biggest matches. After all, he was the one that identified Maguire's presence as one of United's biggest weaknesses upon his arrival at the club.

Premier League Team of the Week: Alli & Sanchez stand out after inspiring victories

The England midfielder helped Spurs get the better of Chelsea while Alexis orchestrated a victory over Swansea, earning their places in the latest XI

Dele Alli and Alexis Sanchez are the highlight names in this week's Premier League team of the week after helping their respective sides to important wins.

Alli was the star for Tottenham with two goals as they came from behind to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. His first, aided by his wonderful first touch to control a Eric Dier pass before beating Willy Caballero, stunned the onlooking crowd before he put the game beyond doubt to all but secure his side's place in the top four at the Blues' expense.

Alexis, meanwhile, shook off his early struggles at Manchester United to fire them to a win over Swansea City. With a goal and an assist, he gave Jose Mourinho's men a two-goal lead within 20 minutes to keep them in second place.
