The Premier League has plenty of impressive left-backs, and Marc Cucurella has been making his mark at Stamford Bridge over the last 12 months.

Now one of the first names on the teamsheet under Enzo Maresca, Cucurella has shown why Chelsea splashed the cash on him from Brighton back in 2022.

Maresca called Cucurella “very important” and even wants seven players like him in his Blues side.

14 Rayan Ait-Nouri Man City and Algeria

New Man City signing Rayan Ait-Nouri is another who has been catching the eye at former employers Wolves in recent seasons.

The 24-year-old now holds a career-high €35m Transfermarkt valuation and hit double figures for Premier League goal contributions in what has been a struggling Wolves side.

13 Destiny Udogie Tottenham and Italy

Spurs have seemingly struck gold after signing Destiny Udogie from Udinese, with the Italian’s market value more than doubling since moving to north London.

Once called “the most underrated player in the Premier League” by Paul Merson and a full-back who “has everything” by Luciano Spalletti, Udogie, who is still just 22, may only get better in the coming years.

12 Ferland Mendy Real Madrid and France

Ferland Mendy has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, but when fully fit, is one of the best left-backs around in Europe.

The Frenchman has made more than 200 appearances for Real Madrid since signing from Lyon and was dubbed a “quiet force” by fellow teammate and countryman Kylian Mbappe. Carlo Ancelotti called him “the best in the world”, however, his lack of attacking output has him low down the list.

Since leaving Real Madrid for AC Milan in 2019, Theo Hernandez has gone from strength to strength and has earned the praise of legendary left-back Paolo Maldini, who hailed the Frenchman as “special”.

Hernandez, who sealed a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in 2025, also has the blistering pace required to get back from attacking phases and show his defensive qualities.

10 Andrea Cambiaso Juventus and Italy

Arguably a player who has been going under the radar is Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso. Labelled as an attacking left-wing back with “world-class” vision and “elite passing ability”, the 25-year-old’s Transfermarkt valuation has rocketed to €35m.

Previously linked with Man City, Cambiaso, who actually doesn’t have a weak foot, could soon be the next star left-back to try his luck in the Premier League.

Part of Real Madrid’s youth set-up from 2017 to 2020 before joining Man Utd, Alvaro Carreras is now back at the Bernabeu after impressing for Benfica in recent seasons.

8 Myles Lewis-Skelly Arsenal and England

Another impressive youngster starring on the big stage has been Myles Lewis-Skelly at Arsenal. The Englishman has even featured as a left-back under Thomas Tuchel with England, despite coming through the Gunners academy as a midfielder.

Mikel Arteta has used the 19-year-old as a left-back at the Emirates, and Jamie Carragher has even compared Lewis-Skelly’s “football arrogance” to Jude Bellingham and Wayne Rooney.

7 Milos Kerkez Liverpool and Hungary

Milos Kerkez only cost Bournemouth £15m from AZ Alkmaar back in 2023, and the Cherries made a nice profit on the left-back who has joined Liverpool.

The Hungarian is already on his way to the top, so it’s no surprise to see the Reds come in for “one of the most talented left-backs in world football”.

6 Riccardo Calafiori Arsenal and Italy

Riccardo Calafiori now appears to have taken over at Arsenal as Mikel Arteta’s first choice left-back, with the Italian also capable of filling in at centre-back if required.

Arteta hailed Calafiori’s unpredictability, saying his attacking edge can be “very difficult to control for the opponent”. His stunning first Gunners goal against Man City highlights that.

Agrediu e fez valer a superioridade numérica. Ganhou o jogo.

Warren Deutrom to step down as Cricket Ireland CEO after nearly 19 years

“It’s the right time for me to hand over the baton,” he said in a statement

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Jun-2025

During Deutrom’s time, Ireland attained Full Member status in 2017•Cricket Ireland

Warren Deutrom, Cricket Ireland’s chief executive, will step down in August after nearly 19 years at the helm. The decision was made after Wednesday’s board meeting where his resignation was formally advised.”It’s hard to explain my feelings since making this decision,” Deutrom said in a statement. “The role of Cricket Ireland CEO has covered more than a third of my life and two-thirds of my professional career. It has felt more like a vocation and a true labour of love than a mere job.”During his tenure, Ireland achieved Full Member status in 2017 and also won the rights to co-host the 2030 T20 World Cup with England, Scotland and Wales. Another significant achievement was the approval for a new cricket stadium with permanent seating in Dublin that is scheduled to be completed in 2028. Ireland Women also made strides in Deutrom’s tenure, making their first ICC Women’s Championship appearance in the 2022-25 cycle.Related

As Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom departs, he leaves behind a complicated legacy

Ireland government approves permanent cricket stadium in Dublin

“The attainment of ICC Full Membership and Test status is the most significant achievement I’ll look back on with pride. Indeed, if the first decade of my role was about trying to achieve ICC Full Membership/Test status, the next decade has been about trying to live up to that privilege.”Today, with new ICC funding, with permanent infrastructure planned, a World Cup to co-host, a central contracts system for both men and women, and the European T20 Premier League on the horizon, I’m more confident than ever that the foundations are there to realise that new vision, so it’s the right time for me to hand over the baton.”Brian MacNeice, chair of Cricket Ireland, hailed Deutrom’s work during multiple tricky periods for the board: “He took over an embryonic organisation, led it through an unparalleled period of growth, managed the organisation through challenges such as the economic crash and Covid, and always maintained an eye on the big picture.”Besides his role at Cricket Ireland, Warren has been in cricket administration for almost 30 years, including stints as head of events for both the ICC and ECB. He sits on the ICC Chief Executives Committee and ICC Women’s Cricket Committee, is the Chair of the European T20 Premier League, was a member of both the Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel and the Olympic Council of Ireland Disciplinary Panel, and is a former Board Director of both the Federation of Irish Sport and the European Cricket Council. The search for the next CEO will begin shortly with a “comprehensive and thorough recruitment process.”

Paratici's new 'major priority' as Frank looks to avoid fatal Ange mistake at Tottenham

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is in danger of repeating a fatal Ange Postecoglou mistake as new co-sporting director Fabio Paratici looks to spare his blushes.

Thomas Frank given clear Tottenham issues to solve as unbeaten streak ends

Last Sunday, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa stole all three points from a Spurs side who seriously lacked cutting edge in the final third.

The Lilywhites looked to be in dreamland when midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur opened the scoring with just five minutes on the clock, but they failed to press their advantage and allowed Villa a route back into the game.

Wonder strikes from Morgan Rogers, who is reportedly on Tottenham’s radar as a transfer target, and Emiliano Buendia ended Spurs’ brief unbeaten streak that was largely down to the grit and resilience of their defence.

It took two deflected efforts from Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus to hand the north Londoners a scrappy 2-1 win at Leeds just prior to the international break, while Frank’s men only just managed to escape from Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League with a draw after late drama.

The same can be said for their previous Premier League home game against bottom side Wolves, with summer signing Joao Palhinha’s side-footed screamer in added time ultimately sparing their blushes against inferior opposition.

While there is a case to be made that Spurs have displayed a solidarity which was largely absent from Postecoglou’s final season in charge, concerns surround their lack of creative spark.

Summer signing Xavi Simons has also been criticised for his lack of goal involvement since joining from RB Leipzig, in a deal which could cost Tottenham a whopping £125 million if he stays for the length of his potential seven-year contract (Paul O’Keefe).

James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski remain out for Spurs too, as Frank looks to solve their central creativity problem, but that is something new director Paratici could assist with.

Paratici, after months of reports linking him with a return to N17, was confirmed as the club’s co-sporting director last week, and he’ll be working alongside Johan Lange as the pair take on the same title with two different roles.

Lange is responsible for the data-driven recruitment side of things, including scouting, while Paratici is Tottenham’s ‘dealmaker’, who’ll be tasked with getting big-money signings over the line (Michael Bridge).

Paratici's new 'major priority' as Frank looks to avoid fatal Ange mistake at Tottenham

As relayed by TEAMtalk, signing a “difference-maker” in the engine room, one who can link defence to attack, is rapidly becoming a “major priority” for Paratici at Tottenham.

Man United’s Kobbie Mainoo, Rangers star Nicolas Raskin and Crystal Palace sensation Adam Wharton are apparently three options on their radar ahead of 2026, with Frank looking not to repeat one of his predecessors’ fatal errors.

So far, Bentancur and Joao Palhinha have impressed individually since the start of this season, especially the latter, who’s been their star man since joining from Bayern Munich on loan with a £26 million option to buy.

However, the pair arguably struggle to influence the creative side of things as deep-lying, tough-tackling anchors — even if they did link up for Tottenham’s opener against Villa.

Much like how Postecoglou often deployed one of Yves Bissouma or Pape Sarr with Bentancur last term, Frank appears to be replicating that ineffective mistake with Palhinha and the latter this time around.

It is a tough conundrum for Frank to solve, as Palhinha is essentially undroppable right now, and Bentancur has equally proved his worth at times. However, as a pairing, they may not offer enough going forward.

Raskin is in the final two years of his contract and reports suggest that Rangers could sell him for around £20-25 million in January, so the Belgian could be an option to partner Palhinha in Frank’s midfield.

Mainoo, whose deal also expires in 2027, could well entertain a January move considering his lack of game time under Ruben Amorim and the World Cup looming next year.

In any case, Paratici is growing increasingly keen on signing another creator for Tottenham’s midfield, and it will be interesting to see whether Frank himself tinkers the team in-house or urges the board to solve this problem through a winter transfer.

Ashes Slashes: Broad gives 'muddled' Australia top three the thumbs down

“I can’t see this being the same top three for the Ashes,” Stuart Broad says of the Khawaja-Konstas-Green combination currently in action in the West Indies

Andrew McGlashan10-Jul-20250:31

Konstas chops on for a duck

Stuart Broad is wondering how Australia can go into the Ashes later this year with the top three currently on show in the West Indies, terming it the most “muddled” combination he has seen from them, although he backed Sam Konstas to be in the side come November. While England have three more Tests to play against India, Australia’s pink-ball outing against West Indies in Jamaica, which starts on Saturday, will be their final Test before the Ashes begins in Perth in late November with the likelihood of another selection race early in the season.Having given Marnus Labuschagne one match as opener in the World Test Championship final, Australia recalled Konstas for this series and Cameron Green has had the No. 3 spot since Lord’s following his return from injury. Konstas has made scores of 3, 5, 25 and 0, while there are continuing questions about Usman Khawaja’s form, although there were encouraging signs from Green in Grenada, where he scored a half-century.Related

“I can’t see this being the same top three for the Ashes,” Broad said on the . “I’m trying not to look that far ahead, particularly with English cricket, but the Aussie selectors generally get it right and they can’t be watching the top three currently in the Caribbean going, ‘That top three is amazing’.”I’m not out of place in thinking it’s the most muddled top three in my lifetime. I’ve grown up with [Matthew] Hayden, [Justin] Langer, [Ricky] Ponting, [David] Warner, [Shane] Watson,” Broad added. “But I think Usman is struggling. Cameron Green at three, he’s a six, isn’t he? Five or six.”Konstas is young and learning his way. Those pitches in the Caribbean have been quite tricky, so I imagine he’ll get a run. I watched him net before the World Test Championship at Lord’s where he didn’t play, the crunch off the bat that you hear… but you get a couple of low scores and you start to question yourself a little bit. But I think he is there to stay.”Getting under the skin of the Australians was a trademark for Broad as a player, and when asked about the comments batting coach Michael Di Venuto had made about being comfortable with the batting line-up, said dryly: “Oh, that’s good… is he a selector?”However, di Venuto conceded the team’s batting had not functioned collectively for a period of time, but he reiterated the challenging nature of the conditions in the West Indies.”We don’t hide behind the fact that we haven’t functioned as a unit for the last couple of years,” he said. “Take out the Sri Lanka series where we were outstanding in the spinning conditions, apart from that it’s been really hard work and we’ve relied on individual brilliance to get us totals. Batting averages have come down, so too have the bowling averages. The bowlers have had some fun in the last couple of years and that’s just the way it is.”

Since the start of 2024, Australia’s top three (noting the occasional use of a nightwatcher) is averaging 26.97 with Khawaja’s 232 in Sri Lanka the only century, which places them mid-table between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. For Nos. 4-7, they are third for the same period, behind Sri Lanka and England.”We’re comfortable where we’re at,” di Venuto said. “And we’ve got to be patient with these guys. The first Test here, we had three guys in the top four either playing Test cricket the first or second time or coming back to Test cricket.”On Konstas, di Venuto said there were technical aspects of his game being worked on but echoed the sentiments of head coach Andrew McDonald and captain Pat Cummins for patience.”He’s a young man that’s coming into the game so I can’t divulge everything that we’re working on,” he said. “But he’s showed some encouraging signs in the last Test and it will take time. If we think back to some of our greats, Steve Waugh took 27 Tests before he got his first hundred. We’re asking a young man to go out and have instant success. The game doesn’t work like that.”Michael Di Venuto: “The legends that played through that time, they were playing on very good wickets”•Getty Images

Di Venuto, who has been Australia’s batting coach in his second stint in the role since 2021, has come in for criticism in recent weeks, notably from Ian Healy, who questioned the impact he was having on the batters.”It’s disappointing but that’s Heals’ opinion, isn’t it? I can’t really control that,” Di Venuto said. “It’s really hard for top-order batters. I think gone are the days of the era that I played where they’re flat wickets, so you had 15, 20 blokes averaging 50, 60, 80, 100 in domestic cricket and the same in Test cricket. The legends that played through that time, they were playing on very good wickets. Conditions have changed [and] balls have changed.”Conditions are likely to challenge batters again in Jamaica with a pink Dukes ball, which has only featured in two previous Tests, being used. Australia had their first look at the balls on Wednesday evening at Sabina Park in what was largely a batting and fielding session. Batters often appeared troubled by movement and bounce off the centre wickets.West Indies, who cancelled their first day-time training session, will have their chance to practice under lights on Thursday. The new floodlights have faced delays in being installed, and the work ran very close to deadline, but the required approvals have been granted. However, the new scoreboard and replay screen were still to be completed.
